Women of the Gilded Age Lecture Jane Addams: Spirit in Action By Louise W. Knight 6:00 pm, Thursday, February 28 Free for Sustaining-level Members and above $10 for Individual and Family-level Members $20 for Non-members Advance purchase required

The Women of the Gilded Age Lecture is generously sponsored by:

Susan S. Stautberg Additional support provided by

Hilton West Palm Beach

The Women of the Gilded Age lectures continue with a presentation by Louise W. Knight in the Grand Ballroom on February 28th. Even today, Jane Addams is remembered as a key figure in social and political reform during the Gilded Age. In rebellion against her privileged upbringing, she moved at age 29 to the heavily industrialized Near West Side of Chicago, where an immigrant community struggled to keep poverty at bay. There Addams cofounded the nation’s first settlement house, Hull House, in 1889. Neighbors – adults and children – soon told her of the harsh working conditions and low pay they endured in factory work. Corrupt local government led to poor garbage services that Addams and other women could do little to improve without the vote. Learning from these experiences, Jane Addams emerged as a national leader of such progressive reforms as child labor, women’s suffrage, and, as war broke out, world peace. In 1931 she became the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Knight will share stories of these achievements to illustrate Addams’s concept of democratic citizenship.

MAKER & MUSE: Women and Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry 2019 Winter Exhibition On View January 29 - May 26 The Flagler Museum’s Season of Style continues with an exhibition that shines a light on the inspiring role women played in the creation and design of art jewelry of the early twentieth century. Maker & Muse: Women and Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry, a stunning exhibition of more than 200 unique pieces of handcrafted art jewelry, celebrates the role of women, both as inspiration and as designers/makers.

The Winter Exhibition is underwritten in part by Northern Trust, The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, VISIT FLORIDA, The Palm Beach Post, the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners, the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council, the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Hilton West Palm Beach, and the State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs.

Featuring exquisite works by renowned artists such as Louis Comfort Tiffany, Charlotte Newman, and René Lalique, Maker & Muse: Women and Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry celebrates the impact of women on art jewelry across five regions: Great Britain, France, Austro-Germany, New York, and Chicago. These regions saw the emergence of bold, experimental artists who pushed the boundaries of traditional jewelry design. Art jewelry developed as a reaction to the conformity of mass-produced goods throughout the Industrial Revolution. Each of the designers represented in Maker & Muse, though inspired by their own individual cultures and surroundings, shared similar aesthetic ideals: they all sought to produce innovative jewelry with semiprecious stones, enamelwork, and dramatic forms. Women influenced art jewelry both as muses to male designers, and for the first time, as designers in their own right. The works in this exhibition offer a mesmerizing glimpse into the social, political, and economic realms in which they were created. Maker & Muse: Women and Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry was organized by The Richard H. Driehaus Museum and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. A beautifully illustrated exhibition catalogue is available for purchase in the Museum Store.

Maker & Muse Exhibition Lecture Maker & Muse: Women and Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry by Elyse Zorn Karlin, jewelry historian, exhibition curator, and catalogue co-author

3:00 pm, Thursday, March 14 Admission is free. Space is limited, reservations are required. In the early decades of the twentieth century, jewelry makers in Great Britain, on the Continent and in the United States created alternative styles to mainstream jewelry. In some countries, women became jewelry designers and fabricators, in others, they became the jewelry artist’s muse. Ms. Karlin will provide an overview of the exhibition and discuss the impact of women on the art jewelry movement. A catalogue signing will follow the lecture. The lecture is funded by The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.

Whitehall Lecture Series The Last Days of the Gilded Age: A Historical Review of the Gilded Age and What Came Next

The 34th Annual Whitehall Lecture Series, presented at 3:00 pm each Sunday afternoon from February 3 to March 3, will set the stage to eulogize the Gilded Age as the golden era of booming economy, rapid scientific and technological advancement, and introduce the dawn of the Progressive Era. When possible, each lecture will be followed by a book signing with the author. Copies of the speaker’s books will be available for purchase. Website visitors can watch the lectures via a Livestream broadcast, free of charge.

$125 for Series Ticket, all five lectures Free for Sustaining level Members and above $10 for Individual, Family, and Life Members $28 for Non-members, includes Museum Admission February 3, by Jamie Pietruska Living in the “Economic Chance-World”: Capitalism and Culture in the Gilded Age Jamie Pietruska’s lecture will examine how the uncertainties of capitalism and culture related to new forms of knowledge and new tools for risk management as Americans navigated what novelist William Dean Howells termed the “economic chance-world” of the Gilded Age.

February 10, by Jeff Johnson Reforming America: Defining the Challenges and Changes of the Progressive Era Jeff Johnson will explore the wide array of contextual complexities presented during the transition between the height of the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, including issues of social and political concern, science and technology innovations, influential art and literature, and popular culture.

February 17, by David Pietrusza 1920: The Year of the Six Presidents David Pietrusza’s lecture will elaborate how the Presidential election of 1920 was among history’s most dramatic. Six once-and-future Presidents, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, and Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, jockeyed for the White House. Women won the vote, Republicans outspent Democrats 4-to-1, voters witnessed the first extensive newsreel coverage and modern campaign advertising, and results were broadcast on radio.

February 24, by Erica Ryan When the World Broke in Two: The Roaring Twenties and the Reshaping of American Culture Erica Ryan’s lecture will demonstrate that American culture was, certainly by the 1920s, a modern culture, and that some people embraced changing views on family life, growing diversity, a flourishing urban consumer culture, and the rise of a secular worldview, while others sought to stem the sweeping tide of change. In ways that may seem quite familiar to us now, people struggled to find and secure their own place in this newly modern American life.

March 3, by Maury Klein Rainbow’s End: The Crash of 1929 Maury Klein’s lecture tells the story of the last hurrah of the Gilded Age in a sobering light and examines the people, problems, and policies that led to the collapse. The Roaring Twenties is remembered as a decade defined by lavish glitz and glamour, powerful millionaires, and a booming, optimistic economy dominated for the first time by consumer spending. However, by October 1929, a financial “perfect storm” sent the Stock Market crashing downward on a course to the Great Depression.

Flagler’s Hotel Empire: Hotel Cordova

Unidentified photographer, Hotel Cordova, date unknown. Flagler Museum Archives.

In 1885, as construction began on the Hotel Ponce de Leon, another hotel was also being erected in St. Augustine. Adjacent to Henry Morrison Flagler’s hotel property, Bostonian Franklin W. Smith purchased land and built the smaller Casa Monica Hotel. Smith undertook major additions and renovations after the hotel’s first season in 1887, which were still unfinished when the hotel opened again in January 1888. Only four months after its grand reopening, news swept St. Augustine: Flagler had purchased the Casa Monica for $325,000. Smith had over-extended himself during the construction process and run out of money. Flagler quickly renamed it the Hotel Cordova and commenced renovations, spending an additional $60,000 on much-needed upgrades. The Casa Monica/Cordova was constructed from a dense concrete mix composed of Portland cement and sand, and while it appeared as one solid entity, the hotel was actually several separate structures.

Unlike the designs of the Hotel Alcazar and the Hotel Ponce de Leon, the Hotel Cordova featured a warrenlike, asymmetrical plan intended to evoke a medieval building that had been added to and altered over time. Despite stylistic differences, the hotel fit well alongside Flagler’s other two hotels. The Hotel Cordova boasted around 230 guest rooms, multiple dining rooms, a sun parlor, library, billiard parlor, and drawing room. Its guests were also provided with free access to the amenities of the other two hotels. The Cordova continued to receive updates over the years, with electrification, additional bathrooms, and other renovations occurring in the mid-1890s, 1903, and 1910. The Hotel Cordova was at its zenith of popularity from 1889 to 1891, but a typhoid scare in 1892 hurt the business badly. It became clear the Cordova couldn’t stand on equal footing with the Alcazar and Ponce de Leon, as well as the more elaborate hotels opening in the warmer destinations of Palm Beach

and Miami. As early as 1893 the Hotel Cordova began to function as a subsidiary of its siblings. Some seasons it didn’t open its kitchen or dining rooms at all, sending guests to dine at Flagler’s other hotels. In 1903 a bridge was built between the Cordova and the Alcazar, eliminating the need for a reception desk at the former. Henceforth the Hotel Cordova was called “the Alcazar Annex,” or simply “The Annex.” Like many of Flagler’s other hotels, age and the beginnings of the Great Depression took its toll on the Hotel Cordova. After years of struggle, the last season for both the Alcazar and Cordova was in 1932, and in 1947 the bridge between the two hotels was removed. Both structures stood unused for the next twenty years. The Cordova eventually became a governmental building when, in 1968, it was heavily renovated to serve as the St. Johns County Courthouse. In 1997 Richard Kessler purchased the courthouse and spent more than two years and $17 million transforming it back into a hotel. Reopened in December 1999, the Hotel Cordova, renamed the Casa Monica Resort & Spa, continues to function in the manner that Smith and Flagler intended – a grand hotel in an ancient city.

Paintings Gift to Grace Whitehall’s Walls The Flagler Museum has recently received a generous gift of ten Gilded Age paintings, donated by Palm Beach resident Suzette de Marigny Smith. The selection of landscapes, seascapes, and one still life were created by some of the most popular artists of the Gilded Age, such as George Inness, Albert Herter, Warren Sheppard, Alexander Wyant, and Edward Moran. The paintings are very much like what Henry and Mary Lily Flagler collected, so they make perfect additions to the Flagler Museum’s collection.

Society of the Four Arts, adorning the entrance to what is now the Gioconda and Joseph King Library.

One artist represented in the gift had direct ties to the Flagler family and Palm Beach. American artist, illustrator, and interior designer Albert Herter (18711950) is most known for historical murals and textile designs. Henry Flagler’s son, Henry Harkness, owned a large watercolor by Herter, which is now in the Flagler Museum’s collection. Herter and his wife Adele visited Palm Beach regularly during the 1930s, and later that decade Herter created murals for the

The donated paintings were from Ms. Smith’s personal collection. “I feel so privileged to be able to support the Flagler Museum, as they do so much in so many ways for the community of Palm Beach,” said Ms. Smith. These lovely paintings will soon grace the walls of Whitehall’s second floor bedrooms, where the intimate works will perfectly complement the collection of period furniture and rich interiors.

The collection includes a watercolor still life by a prominent female artist of the Gilded Age, Rhoda Holmes Nicholls (1854-1938). Nicholls studied in Europe and the United States and exhibited internationally, including the Paris Salon and World’s Columbian Exposition. She also became an important teacher and role model for other women pursuing the arts.
