A Tribute to Our Dear Friend, Fred Sharf

Chief Curator Tracy Kamerer and Fred Sharf at the 2012 opening of A New Light on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls.

Flagler Museum curators Janel Trull and Tracy Kamerer with Fred Sharf in 2015 at the opening of With a Wink and a Nod: Cartoonists of the Gilded Age.

The Flagler Museum mourns the recent passing of Frederic A. Sharf, a longtime friend and patron. Fred and his wife, Jean, have generously supported the Flagler Museum in many ways over the years. Fred’s special interest in our collections and exhibitions, in particular, has greatly expanded the Museum’s programming and national visibility. Our fall 2015 exhibition, With a Wink and a Nod: Cartoonists of the Gilded Age, featured rare cartoon drawings made for the American humor magazine Puck from the Sharf collection. Fred’s keen eye recognized the artistic and educational value of the drawings, and his generosity provided the opportunity for the Museum to organize an exhibition placing the drawings into their historical context. Fred and Jean not only supported the exhibition and catalogue, but also permanently expanded the Flagler Museum Research Library’s collection of Gilded Age publications by donating original illustrated magazines such as Puck and Judge. The Sharfs’ support of With a Wink and a Nod also allowed the Museum to launch a traveling exhibition program that will continue into the future.

Jean and Fred Sharf at the 2011 reception for The Extraordinary Joseph Urban.

The Museum’s fall 2017 exhibition Knights of the Air: Aviator Heroes of World War I – the first exhibition devoted to the image of the World War I aviator – likewise could not have become a reality without Fred’s interest and enthusiasm. Most of the works of art in the exhibition were on loan from the Sharfs’ large aviation collection. Their kind support of the project made it possible to present this extremely popular exhibition, anchoring the Flagler Museum’s commemorations of the centennial of America’s entry into World War I. Fred Sharf was a thoughtful and intellectual presence in our lives for many years. He always had the best interests of the Museum in mind, ever respectful of our goals and mission. Fred will be greatly missed by many in Palm Beach County’s cultural community. His positivity, curiosity, and great sense of humor will continue to serve as inspiration to us all.

Winter Exhibition

MASTERFULLY HUMAN: The Art of Gaugengigl January 23 - April 29

Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl, Small Audience, ca. 1881, oil on wood panel. Childs Gallery, Boston.

After emigrating to America in 1878 at age 23, Gaugengigl quickly became active in the thriving Boston art and club scene. His small cabinet paintings were widely exhibited, and each new work received enthusiastic press coverage. In addition to his popular historical genre subjects, the exhibition will present the artist’s work in landscape and portraiture. Gaugengigl’s congeniality helped him secure many portrait commissions from Boston’s elite. The resulting works were praised not only for expert figure modelling, but also for Gaugengigl’s ability to capture the essence of a sitter’s personality. Gaugengigl’s career suffered after the turn of the twentieth century, however. Works of art that looked to the past were increasingly considered old-fashioned, as collectors embraced modernist movements such as Impressionism. And, like many citizens of Germanic heritage, Gaugengigl suffered socially and economically as the result of the outbreak of World War I. The demand for Gaugengigl’s work decreased, and the artist was forced to rely on a small group of friends to obtain the portrait commissions that sustained him in his final decades. The man who once mingled with high society and enjoyed rapturous praise died in 1932, nearly forgotten by the art world. The Flagler Museum’s exhibition presents an opportunity for a fresh appreciation of the work of Ignaz Gaugengigl, master of human expression.

Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl, The Amateur, 1882, oil on wood panel. Garry Trudeau.

Gaugengigl was praised as a master of human expression, with the ability to tell a story in a single gesture or look. The historical characters that populate his charming pictures – cavaliers, lovers courting, connoisseurs, artists, and musicians – are thoroughly engaging. Gaugengigl further captivated viewers with careful research and skillful technique, including strong draftsmanship and luminous light and color. As the etching revival swept Europe and America, Gaugengigl was inspired to create etched versions of his most popular oil paintings. The freedom and directness of the etching process provided additional creative opportunities to enhance his compositions.

Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl, The Painter, ca. 1883, oil on wood panel. Dahesh Museum of Art, New York. 1996.2.

Nostalgic images of a refined and romantic past will be on display at the Flagler Museum beginning January 23, 2018. Masterfully Human: The Art of Gaugengigl surveys the work of Boston painter and etcher Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl (1855-1932), and is the largest-ever exhibition devoted to this Gilded Age artist. The Bavarian-born Gaugengigl created beautifully painted depictions of everyday life, often set in revolutionary-era France, that convey timeless themes such as honor, friendship, love, and beauty. His intimate and evocative works were sought after by Boston area collectors.

Organized by the Flagler Museum, Masterfully Human presents 75 works of art, on loan from major private and public collections from across the United States. Masterfully Human will be complemented by guided exhibition tours, offered each Wednesday at 10:30 am and 3:30 pm beginning January 31, and a Lecture Series. An illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition. Exhibition underwriting is generously provided by: THE MOSAIC FOUNDATION (of R. & P. Heydon), Northern Trust, The Palm Beach Post, VISIT FLORIDA, Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners, Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council, the Hilton West Palm Beach, and State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. Kamerer, will be released in January, in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition. Visit the Museum Store to purchase a copy.

Each lecture will be archived at www.GildedAgeHistoryChannel.com

Mitch Horowitz presented his lecture Mystic America, during the 32nd Whitehall Lecture Series, Metaphysical America: Spirituality and Health Movements During the Gilded Age.

February 11 - March 1917: On the Brink of War and Revolution Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Will Englund will spotlight the events leading into World War I and the consequences of the action of war, including research from a wealth of contemporary Russian and American sources. Englund will deliver a highly detailed telling of the month that transformed the world’s greatest nations, March 1917.

February 18 - The Last of the Doughboys: The Forgotten Generation and Their Forgotten War Richard Rubin spent more than a decade compiling the firsthand stories of World War I soldiers as a written legend of accounts. In The Last of the Doughboys, he explores their vivid recollections of war that express equally poignant views of the camaraderie among men and the horrors of industrial warfare. This lecture is sure to tell the story of World War I unlike any you may have heard before.

February 25 - World War I: The American Soldier Experience Jennifer Keene will provide an in-depth look at the complexities of what it means for Americans to ‘go to war.’ Honing in on the act of conscription and the ways in which America raised its forces during World War I, Ms. Keene will explore the racial and cultural differences among American soldiers, exemplified by groups such as the Harlem Hellfighters, and life on the homefront after returning home. Supported by vivid imagery of the earliest training exercises, and later the necessity of trench and arms training on the Western Front, this lecture will present World War I from a more personal perspective.

March 4 - The Second Line of Defense: American Women and World War I Lynn Dumenil will focus on popular culture images and occupations of women in World War I. Attention given to “modern” women’s war service and heroic activism offered dramatic evidence of boundary-crossing women and removed limitations. The media’s fascination with the novelty of women at war undoubtedly led it to exaggerate the degree to which American women challenged gender conventions and helps us to understand why many observers believed - inaccurately - that the war would prove transformative in reshaping women’s lives.

March 11 - Uncle Sam Wants You: World War I and the Making of the Modern American Citizen Dr. Christopher Capozzola’s lecture will examine the ways in which American politics shifted as a result of a new era of war and how the mobilization of a society of concerned citizens affected the homefront. While at first, duty, obligation, and personal responsibility were the focus of homefront efforts, growing strife led to an uproar of violence and a heated political climate. Told through the unique voices of political leaders and American citizens, Uncle Sam Wants You will cover military conscriptions and conscientious objection, homefront volunteerism, regulation of enemy aliens, and the emergence of civil liberties movements. The Whitehall Lecture Series is sponsored by Hilton West Palm Beach, The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, The Palm Beach Post, Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council, Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County, and State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

The 13th Annual Bluegrass in the Pavilion concert will feature co-headliners Blue Highway and the Gibson Brothers for an unforgettable afternoon of bluegrass music set in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Doors open at 2:30 pm. Bands will take the stage at 3:00 pm.

Blue Highway

Highly esteemed bluegrass band Blue Highway has earned a collective 26 IBMA Awards, six SPBGMA Awards, one Dove Award, plus three GRAMMY nominations as a band, in addition to two prestigious GRAMMY Awards among its current members. Blue Highway’s new album Original Traditional topped multiple national charts at #1 and was nominated for a 2017 GRAMMY Award for Best Bluegrass Album. Blue Highway was also voted the Favorite Bluegrass Artist of All Time by the readers of Bluegrass Today in April 2016. Blue Highway has been praised by peers, fans, and media alike. Each member of the band is a highly decorated artist in his own right. Wayne Taylor was the 2016 Inductee into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame. Tim Stafford received honors as 2015 SPBGMA Guitar Player of the Year and 2014 IBMA Songwriter of the Year. Shawn Lane was nominated as 2015 IBMA Songwriter of the Year, while new young Dobro-phenom, Gaven Largent, was nominated as 2016 SPBGMA Dobro Player of the Year.

The Gibson Brothers

The Gibson Brothers’ brand of bluegrass is a visceral mix of heritage and soaring harmony, making them the premiere brother duet of the genre, following in the footsteps of legendary acts such as the Stanley Brothers, Jim & Jesse, and the Osborne Brothers. Their first-ever album of entirely original songs, In the Ground, sees the Gibson Brothers taking on their own roots as the sixth generation of Gibsons to grow up on their family farm. The two-time International Bluegrass Music Association Entertainers of the Year follow up their stellar, five-time nominated tribute to brother harmonies, Brotherhood, with this latest effort. The themes come from the farm, their childhood, and the region in which they were raised. One can hear their dedication to the songs, from the lighthearted to the profound, in the modernity of the lyrics, matched with a virtuosity that feels somehow both traditional and revelatory. Featuring celebrated, award-winning Dobro player Rob Ickes, In the Ground reaches into new territory for the Gibson Brothers.

Women of the Gilded Age Lecture The Richest Woman in America: Hetty Green in the Gilded Age Thursday, February 1, 6:00 pm Free for Sustaining Level Members and above $10 for Individual and Family level Members $20 for non-members Originally guided by the shrewd money-men in her family, Hetty Green grew up to be one of the most powerful financiers in American history. A businesswoman who transcended the expectations set upon women of her time, she was interested in a diverse array of money-making opportunities such as real estate, railroads, and financial loans. Even as a married woman and mother of two, Hetty Green remained financially independent and amassed a great fortune. Despite yellow journalism’s obsession with the portrayal of her quirky and meager lifestyle, her legacy is not wholly as “The Witch of Wall Street,” but rather as the fiercely independent “Richest Woman in America.” Janet Wallach is the author of nine books and has written extensively about influential women. Her latest, The Richest Woman in America: Hetty Green in the Gilded Age, is a biography of the eccentric nineteenth century financial genius. The Wall Street Journal called it “an engaging biography...well researched and well written.” The Washington Post said it “tells the story of America’s repeated busts and booms in a way that seems very relevant right now.” Ms. Wallach is the author of Chanel: Her Style and Her Life, a biography of the twentieth century’s most important female fashion designer. Her book Sergalio is a historical novel about the harem at Topkapi Palace, Istanbul. Wallach’s Desert Queen; The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell, published by Nan A. Talese/Doubleday (1996), was translated into twelve languages, and was a New York Times notable book of the year. This lecture is generously sponsored by Susan S. Stautberg.

A Flagler Employee in World War I

In what might be his last photograph, Henry Flagler rode in a wicker wheel chair driven by George Conway with his beloved Delos, ca. 1913. Flagler Museum Archives.

A ca. 1915 photograph of George Conway at Whitehall. Flagler Museum Archives.

Henry Morrison Flagler passed away a year before World War I began, but his family and associates did not remain untouched by the War. One of the members of the year-round staff at Whitehall, George R. Conway, fought in the Great War. Born in Maidstone, England in 1893, Conway emigrated to the United States in April 1911, arriving in New York aboard the SS Majestic. The Passenger List gives his final destination as Palm Beach, meaning he had already been hired by the Flaglers before commencing the journey. Upon his arrival at Whitehall, Conway began work alongside the other year-round employees as both valet and security for the Flaglers. One of his primary roles was driving the elderly Flagler around in a wicker wheel chair.

War I, and paid for his passage to Europe. Conway spent more than 30 months in Europe. For some of that time he was stationed in France, possibly as an ambulance driver. In the summer of 1918 Conway was hospitalized for a gas attack, which was followed by a serious fever. Local papers followed his progress, and by October The Palm Beach Post reported that he was well on his way to recovery. Conway returned to Whitehall from the War in October 1919. In 1925 Conway married Theresa Fremd, the daughter of Carl Fremd Sr., a fellow employee who helped managed the grounds at Whitehall and at Flagler’s Palm Beach hotels. Conway later settled in West Palm Beach. When he passed away in 1952, the War veteran was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery. The Flagler Museum Archives holds a collection of photographs depicting Conway, the Fremds, and other Whitehall employees.

After Flagler died in 1913, Conway continued to work at Whitehall until 1915, when he returned to England. A newspaper reported that Mary Lily Flagler learned of Conway’s desire to fight for his country in World

Women of the Gilded Age Special Lecture The Richest Woman in America: Hetty Green in the Gilded Age Thursday, February 1, 6:00 pm Free for Sustaining level Members and above $10 for Individual and Family Members, $20 for Non-members Reservations recommended Hetty Green was a businesswoman who transcended the expectations set upon women of her time, becoming one of the most powerful financiers in American history. Even as a married woman and mother of two, she remained financially independent and amassed a great fortune. Despite yellow journalism’s obsession with the portrayal of her quirky and meager lifestyle, her legacy is not wholly as “The Witch of Wall Street,” but rather as the fiercely independent “Richest Woman in America.” This Special Lecture is sponsored by Susan S. Stautberg.
