Visiting the Museum

Hours The Museum is open year-round: Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The Museum is closed: Mondays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

Admission Free for Flagler Museum Members $18 for Adults $10 for Youth ages 13 - 17 $3 for Children 6 - 12 Children under six are free For groups of 20 or more admission is $14 per person. Please contact the Reservations Coordinator at (561) 655-2833 ext. 27 for more information.

Tours There are three options for touring Whitehall: Free Audio Tours in English, Spanish, and French (German available January 2013). Free Self-Guide brochures in English, Spanish, French, and German. Free Docent-led tours of the first floor at scheduled times.


Museum Store A visit would not be complete without a stop at the Museum Store. The Store features many products developed exclusively for the Museum. You will also find an unparalleled selection of books about the Gilded Age and Florida history, as well as exquisite jewelry and decorative items. Restrictions For the safety and preservation of the collection please refrain from eating, drinking, and flash photography. Large bags and tripods are not permitted. Photography and videography for personal use are permitted everywhere except the special exhibition gallery. Commercial and editorial photography must be pre-arranged with the Museum’s Public Affairs Department. Please silence cellular phones and refrain from using them while visiting the Museum.

Capturing the Cup: Yacht Racing During the Gilded Age

Capturing the Cup: Yacht Racing During the Gilded Age, on exhibit at the Flagler Museum from October 16, 2012, through January 6, 2013, presents the October 16, 2012 - January 6, 2013 exciting story of yacht racing in Free with Museum Admission America during the period that has also become known as the Golden Age of the sport. Works of art, artifacts, historic films, and elaborate gold and silver trophies made by the most important silversmiths, illuminate the history of the great yachts, races, and personalities of the period, like Sir Thomas Lipton, who won the hearts of Americans in spite of losing five America’s Cup challenges. Among the significant objects on display is a rare perfect replica of the silver America’s Cup, the oldest and most coveted prize in the world of sport.

In conjunction with the exhibition Capturing the Cup: Yacht Racing During the Gilded Age, author Michael D’Antonio will present Sir Thomas Lipton and His Race for the Cup.

Today he is more famous for his tea, but in the world of Gilded Age yachting, Sir Thomas Lipton’s name was synonymous with a passionate love of yacht racing and good sportsmanship. After building his empire of markets, factories, and tea plantations, Lipton set his sights on winning the America’s Cup. He spared no expense to capture the most coveted of all sporting trophies, despite the fact that he didn’t even know how to sail.

D’Antonio is the author of many acclaimed books, including A Full Cup: Sir Thomas Lipton’s Extraordinary Life and His Quest for the America’s Cup. He previously presented The Sweetest Company Town Ever Built: Hershey, PA as part of the 2007 Whitehall Lecture Series. Among his many awards is the Pulitzer Prize, which he shared with a team of reporters for Newsday.

Each afternoon the Flagler Museum offers a Gilded Age style lunch, which features an array of delicacies and refreshments reminiscent of the elegance of the Gilded Age. Visitors will enjoy a selection of gourmet tea sandwiches, traditional scones, and sweets complemented by the Flagler Museum’s own Whitehall Special Blend™ tea, and served on exquisite Whitehall Collection™ china. Café des Beaux-Arts is located in the beautiful Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Christmas at Whitehall

Special Christmas Lecture: Season’s Greetings from the White House Gilded Age President, Calvin Coolidge, lit the first White House Christmas Tree in 1923, sparking tradition for future presidents for years to come. As a collector and historian, Mary Seeley has captured the Christmas traditions of nearly every First Family since the start of the Gilded Age.

Annual Christmas Tree Lighting The Annual Tree Lighting festivities includes music played on the original 1,249 pipe organ and the 1902 Steinway art-case piano (this is the only opportunity during the year visitors have to hear Whitehall’s instruments), choir performances, refreshments, and a visit from Santa Claus. The event culminates with Henry Flagler’s youngest descendants lighting the 16-foot Grand Hall Christmas Tree. Everyone will receive a box of Animal Crackers as they leave the Museum. The iconic box with string was designed during the Gilded Age as a Christmas ornament.

Holiday Evening Tours During this beloved family event, visitors may tour Whitehall after hours and discover the origins of American Christmas traditions. Guests will have the rare opportunity to see Whitehall by the glow of the original 1902 light fixtures. A choral group will sing carols, and holiday refreshments will be served. The Museum Store will remain open for holiday shopping. Every visitor will receive a traditional Christmas cracker following the tour.

Quartetto Bernini January 8, 2013

The Quartetto Bernini was created in Rome in 1992. Since 1998 the Quartet is in residence at the Roman Philharmonic Academy. In 1999, Quartetto was awarded the well-known ”Michelangelo Prize” for exceptional artistic merit, a prize presented in previous editions to Goffredo Petrassi, Renzo Piano, Alberto Sordi, as well as Ennio Morricone himself.

Schubert Ensemble February 5, 2013

The Schubert Ensemble has established itself over 29 years as one of the world’s leading exponents of music for piano and strings. The Ensemble has performed in over 40 different countries, and in 1998 the Ensemble was recognized by the Royal Philharmonic Society when it presented the group with the Best Chamber Ensemble Award, for which it was shortlisted again in 2010.

For almost 20 years, the Vienna Piano Trio has been performing regularly in virtually every major music center in Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Far East. The trio was founded by violinist Wolfgang Redik, cellist Marcus Trefny and pianist Stefan Mendl in 1988. Extensive studies with various highly renowned musicians paved the trio’s way to an international career soon after. The group tours worldwide, performing in major music cities such as London, Paris, New York, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Toronto, Montreal, Mexico City, Tokyo, Sydney, Brussels, Barcelona and Berlin.

An outstanding career spanning three decades has made the Auryn Quartet one of the most sought-after and respected ensembles performing around the globe. The Quartet has not changed its personnel over this long period, and continues with its fresh and pioneering approach to all genres of music. Since 2003 the Auryn Quartet has been sharing its wealth of experience with musicians of younger generations, in the form of a teaching position at the Music Academy in Detmold, Germany, where they are professors for chamber-music.


Whitehall Society Events Bal PoudrÉ

Tickets In honor of Henry Flagler’s extraordinary life and legacy, in Florida and Palm Beach, the Whitehall Society will host a Bal Poudré in the Museum’s Grand Ballroom. Bal Poudré, literally meaning powdered wig ball, were popular in America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first Bal Poudré in Palm Beach was hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Henry Flagler on March 5th, 1903, and was described in the national newspapers as “one of the most sumptuous social affairs ever attempted south of Washington.” All proceeds will help underwrite free school tours. During the previous school year, thousands of students from around South Florida visited the Flagler Museum enhancing their knowledge of Florida’s history as well as this fascinating time period in our history, America’s Gilded Age.

Impressions of Interiors: Gilded Age Paintings by Walter Gay

American artist Walter Gay (1856–1937) specialized in painting views of opulent residential interiors in late19th and early-20th-century America and Europe. John Singer January 29 - April 21, 2013 Sargent, Gay’s contemporary, Free with Museum Admission is well known for painting the sumptuous clothing and jewels of American society in his fashionable portraits. Walter Gay, in contrast, painted society’s rooms—with their silk wall coverings, ornate paneling, 18th-century French furniture, tapestries, and sculptures—arranged in the private spaces of what were often legendary residences. Impressions of Interiors will present a comprehensive exploration of Walter Gay’s depictions of elaborately decorated European and American domestic interiors, painted from the mid-1890s to the early 1930s. These paintings serve as documents of the collecting, decorating habits, and taste of Gay and his patrons, and also as mirrors of their attitudes towards the past. The exhibition features paintings from major private collections and institutions including: the Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Musée d’Orsay, Paris; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Impressions of Interiors: Gilded Age Paintings by Walter Gay has been organized by the Frick Art & Historical Center, Pittsburgh. This exhibition is made possible by a generous grant from The Richard C. von Hess Foundation. Gallery Talk Tour the exhibition with Impressions of Interiors: Gilded Age Paintings by Walter Gay curator and exhibition catalog lead author Dr. Isabel Taube. Dr. Taube will provide expert perspective and insight on Walter Gay’s extensive collection. She teaches American and European nineteenth- and twentieth-century art history at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She currently is working on a book about the symbolic significance of decorative objects in Gilded Age paintings of interiors. A book signing will follow the Gallery Talk. The President and the Assassin

The Assassination of President McKinley at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century Scott Miller - Author and Historian February 3, 2013 - 3:00 p.m. The Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, New York in 1901, became the stage for the startling assassination of President William McKinley, by an anarchist. At the time, the United States was undergoing a cultural transition from agrarian to industrial and extending its influence worldwide. One day after President William McKinley addressed the crowd gathered at the Fair, extolling technology and industrial advancement, he was assassinated by a first-generation immigrant, who was a dismayed factory worker and anarchist.

How President Grant Saved the Economy but Lost His Own Shirt Jean Edward Smith, Author and Professor of Political Science February 10, 2013 - 3:00 p.m. A decorated war hero, Ulysses S. Grant was the U.S. Army’s first four-star general and the only Gilded Age President to serve back-to-back terms. Though he struggled as a young cadet, Grant returned to the military after a string of civilian business failures. Credited with maintaining stability in the era of Reconstruction and for fostering the continued unity of the nation, he is perhaps most remembered for his second term which was marred by financial scandals and an ineffective cabinet. Grant died nearly broke, as a victim of swindle.

The Surprise Election and Assassination of President Garfield Ken Ackerman, Author and Historian February 17, 2013 - 3:00 p.m. After a long and drawn out Republican convention in 1880, James Garfield was nominated, after more than 50 rounds of voting, the Party’s candidate for President. Garfield went on to win the popular vote by the narrowest of margins. After serving as President only a few months, President Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau, a mentally ill and unsuccessful applicant for a Presidential appointment. President Garfield would likely have survived, except for the unsanitary practices of his physicians who refused to believe Lister’s findings regarding germs and hygiene. Garfield’s assassination marked the beginning of a new era in American politics and partisanship.

Matthew Algeo, Author and Reporter February 24, 2013 - 3:00 p.m. Sworn into his second term as President just months before, he was a political leader known for his honesty. In the midst of the Panic of 1893, President Grover Cleveland disappeared from public view for five days. Cleveland had been diagnosed with the dread disease, cancer. Insistent on total secrecy, in order to insure the Country’s financial stability, the President assembled a team of top physicians and surgeons, boarded the Oneida, a friend’s yacht, and headed toward open water. Though it seemed the surgery was kept secret, eventually, the story was picked up by well-respected journalist, E.J. Edwards. What followed was a major campaign by Cleveland’s supporters to deny and discredit Edwards’ story.

Fraud of the Century The Election of President Hayes Roy Morris, Author and Editor of Military Heritage magazine March 3, 2013 - 3:00 p.m. Set in the centennial year of the United States, the 1876 Presidential election was one of the most dynamic and powerful elections in American history. Embroiled in claims of corruption and controversial legality, the contest between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel Tilden nearly sparked a civil war among political parties. The older, more politically experienced Tilden, received the popular vote and was known as an intellectual politician. However, it was Hayes, the more practical politician, who eventually took the oath of office, after an exhaustive recount of the electoral vote. The battle for the presidency of 1876 depleted Tilden’s personal and political spirit and dampened Hayes’ political reputation on both sides of the political aisle.


Easter egg Hunt

Children are invited to hunt for more than 7,000 Easter Eggs on the Museum’s Lawns. The Museum grounds will be sectioned off into age-appropriate areas so all children, including toddlers, will have an opportunity to participate in the hunt. Every child will receive a Flagler Museum commemorative egg. Museum gates open at 9:00 a.m. when children may have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny, and create Easterthemed crafts. The egg hunt begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. After the hunt, children are invited to join in special games, including the Gilded Age game of egg rolling. Egg rolling began on the South Lawn of the White House when President Rutherford B. Hayes welcomed children to the first White House Easter Egg Roll in 1878. Special prizes will be awarded to the game winners. Children should bring their own baskets. Wooden egg rolling spoons will be provided.

The 9th Annual Bluegrass in The Pavilion concert continues to bring the best Bluegrass musicians to South Florida. In 2013, Audie Blaylock and Redline and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver will perform brilliant Bluegrass music at this National Historic Landmark.

With over 35 albums to their credit, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have multiple Grammy, Dove, ICM, IBMA and SPBGMA Award nominations, and are seven-time winners of IBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year. Doyle Lawson received two nominations in the 17th Annual Inspirational Country Music (ICM) Awards held in Nashville on October 28, 2011, with fellow nominees including such country giants as George Strait and Carrie Underwood. There are many flavors of bluegrass, but none so delicious as what you’ll hear from Audie Blaylock and Redline. Absolutely no track disappoints the listener. Audie Blaylock, along with Redline members: Patrick McAvinue (fiddle/vocals), Reed Jones (bass/vocals), and Russ Carson (banjo) comprise a wealth of talent alone.


On June fifth each year the Flagler Museum celebrates its anniversary by opening to the public free of charge in honor of the Museum’s founder, and Henry Flagler’s granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews. On Founder’s Day visitors may take a self-guided tour of Whitehall, view the permanent collection of art and objects related to the Gilded Age, and climb aboard Henry Flagler’s Railcar No. 91 in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day Family plays an important role in the history of the Flagler Museum. The Museum’s founder, Jean Flagler Matthews, was the granddaughter of Henry Flagler. She preserved Whitehall and its collections to honor her grandfather and educate visitors about Florida’s history. Share your family history by celebrating Grandparents Day at the Flagler Museum. Families may tour Whitehall with a Tour and Activity Guide for Kids and then enjoy family-friendly activities in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Together families can create a family tree, design a scrapbook page to commemorate the day, write a postcard to send to family, and have a photo taken in front of Henry Flagler’s Railcar No. 91.

The Annual Tree Lighting festivities includes music played on the original 1,249 pipe organ and the 1902 Steinway art-case piano, choral performances, refreshments, and a visit from Santa Claus.

Children’s Winter Exhibit Activity February 16, 2013 10:00 a.m. Free with Admission

The Museum invites children in fourth through eighth grade to a special tour of the Winter Exhibit, Impressions of Interiors, with the Museum’s Education Director. Afterward, children will exercise their creativity during a hands-on activity.

Families are invited to come dressed for Tea. Parents and children will create festive bonnets and top hats while learning the art of table etiquette, followed by Gilded Age style tea from the Café des Beaux-Arts.

Children are invited to hunt for more than 7,000 Easter Eggs on the Museum’s Lawns. The Museum grounds will be sectioned off into age-appropriate areas so that children, including toddlers, will have an opportunity to participate in the hunt. Every child will receive a Flagler Museum commemorative egg.

Directions to the Museum The Museum is located on the corner of Cocoanut Row and Whitehall Way in Palm Beach, Florida.

From I-95 or Florida’s Turnpike:

• Take Exit 70 from I-95, or Exit 99 from the Florida Turnpike, and drive East on Okeechobee Boulevard (about three miles or six miles respectively) through West Palm Beach. • Cross the bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway into Palm Beach and continue onto Royal Palm Way. • Make a left turn at the first stop light onto Cocoanut Row. • Continue about ½ mile, and the Museum parking lot will be on the left.

From US 1 heading North: • Turn right (east) on Okeechobee Blvd and follow above directions.

From A1A heading North: • Turn left onto Worth Avenue. • Follow Worth Avenue west to Cocoanut Row and turn right. • Drive north 8/10ths of a mile along Cocoanut Row to the Museum’s parking lot on the left side of the street.

From US 1 heading South: • Turn left at Quadrille Blvd, and cross over the Flagler Memorial Bridge. • Turn right at the first traffic light onto Cocoanut Row. • The Museum is located on the right side of the street. h e n r y
