New Audio Tour Features Spanish Translation The Flagler Museum introduced new self-guided audio tours on January 2nd. The new audio handsets are more compact, have longer battery life, and allow for tours in multiple languages. The new audio tour features English and Spanish translations, and there are plans to provide French and German translations by 2013. All Flagler Museum tours are free with Museum admission, and the new Spanish audio tour makes the Flagler Museum the only Museum in Palm Beach County to provide a free audio tour to Spanish speaking visitors. Only one other Palm Beach County organization offers a Spanish option, but charges an additional fee. After a quick survey of major national museums, the Flagler Museum is among only a handful of major institutions that offer a free foreign language audio tour.

“The Extraordinary Joseph Urban” On Exhibition Through April 17th

The Museum’s winter exhibition on Gilded Age architect, illustrator, and designer Joseph Urban has been seen by thousands of visitors since it opened February 1st. The exhibition features more than 100 objects chronicling Urban’s dynamic range of work, including rare architectural drawings and sketches of Mar-a-Lago and the Paramount Theatre in Palm Beach. One feature of the exhibition is the recreation of Urban’s Wiener Werkstätte Showroom in New York. Urban opened the showroom in 1922 to help fellow artists who were struggling to survive in postwar Vienna. At the time the showroom featured the most contemporary interior design. The showroom was a sensation though it was not a financial success. Many of the items were moved to museum’s throughout the country. Perhaps the most widely accessible elements of Joseph Urban’s work were his movie sets. Urban served as artistic director, set designer,

and/or set decorator on 40 films produced or released through Cosmopolitan Pictures, Fox Studios, Paramount Studios, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1920 through 1933. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum will screen “Little Old New York” on March 3, 2011 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom. The 1923 classic stars Marion Davies who plays a charming Irish girl who poses as her deceased brother to inherit a fortune in 19th century New York. The movie was the highest grossing film at the time, and features Gilded Age figures like Cornelius Vanderbilt, Washington Irving, and John Jacob Astor. Tickets are free for Sustaining level Members and above, $5 for Individual, Family, and Life Members. Tickets are $10 for nonmembers. Call (561) 655-2833 or visit the website to purchase tickets.

Grammy nominated Daily & Vincent

Bluegrass In The Pavilion Concert

Bluegrass stars Dailey & Vincent and Grasstowne will perform at the Flagler Museum’s seventh annual Bluegrass in The Pavilion Concert on April 9th at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $30 and all proceeds benefit the South Arts’ emergency planning for Gulf Coast cultural institutions. To purchase tickets please call (561) 655-2833 or visit www. flaglermuseum.us/bluegrassconcert. Dailey & Vincent return to the Museum after taking home the biggest prize in bluegrass: the 2010 Entertainer of the Year award from the International Bluegrass Music Association. It was the third straight year the two have won the award, and they also earned Vocal Group of the Year and Album of the Year for “Dailey & Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers.” The group received their first Grammy nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for their cover of “Elizabeth,” also on “Dailey & Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers.”

The New York Times recently called Dailey & Vincent “the most celebrated new bluegrass act of the last few years,” while music critic Chet Flippo noted, “They carry on the sense of tradition of bluegrass but pair it with a highlyattuned choice of songs. And they are obviously playing this music because they love it.” That love of traditional bluegrass earned the group an unprecedented nine nominations from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA) Awards. Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent are long-time veterans of the professional bluegrass scene having some twenty years experience between them from long tenures with bluegrass and country legends Doyle Lawson and Ricky Skaggs. As the Wall Street Journal proclaimed, “A new dynasty may be taking shape in bluegrass music,” and now fans in South Florida will have the opportunity to hear the most sensational bluegrass band around.

Grasstowne

The renowned Grasstowne will also play this year’s event with renditions of great Americana classics, and new favorites. The group was nominated for five awards at the 2010 Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA) Awards, including Bluegrass Band of the Year, Instrumental Group of the Year, Song of the Year, and Bluegrass Album of the Year. Multiple group members were also nominated for their respective instruments, and Alan Bibey won the award for Mandolin Player Of The Year. Grasstowne’s latest project, “The Other Side Of Towne” is up to #3 on the bluegrass charts, and the album’s first single “Big, Big Heartaches” hit #1 on the Prime Cuts Of Bluegrass chart. Grasstowne is comprised of very well respected veterans in bluegrass and acoustic music. Alan Bibey and Steve Gulley have known and admired each others musicianship for over 25 years through their

endeavors with bands such as The New Quicksilver, IIIrd Tyme Out, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, BlueRidge, and Mountain Heart. Add to the mix three young and very talented players: Adam Haynes on fiddle and vocals, Justin Jenkins on banjo and vocals, and Kameron Keller on upright bass and you have one of the hottest and energetic bands touring today.

The band’s first two projects “The Road Headin’ Home” and “The Other Side of Towne” went to #1 and #2 respectively on the National Bluegrass Charts. “The Road Headin’ Home” remained at #1 for three months and also won the 2008 “Album of the Year” award. Gilded Age Easter Traditions Continue at Whitehall Just as President Rutherford B. Hayes welcomed children to the first White House Easter Egg Roll in 1878, the Flagler Museum invites children to Whitehall’s South Lawn to hunt for 4,000 candy-filled eggs. The annual Easter Egg Hunt and Egg Roll is April 23, 2011. Museum gates open at 9:00 a.m. and the egg hunt begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. The Museum grounds will be

sectioned off into age-appropriate areas so all children will have an opportunity to participate. In addition to the egg hunt children may participate in art activities and have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. There will also be special games, including the Gilded Age game of egg rolling. Special prizes will be awarded to the game winners. Children are encouraged

to bring their own baskets. Egg rolling spoons will be provided. Admission is $5 for children and $18 for adults. There is no admission charge for children and grandchildren of Museum Members at the Sustaining level and above. The event is sponsored by the Palm Beach Daily News.

Gilded Age Easter History • The New York City Easter Parade has been an annual tradition beginning around 1870 with an impromptu walk from a church. • PAAS Easter egg dye was invented by a Newark, New Jersey drug store owner named William Townley in 1880, and sold for five cents.

Museum Goes GREEN

.

. New sealing in all of Whitehall’s original exterior windows.

. Museum installs state of the art green elevator. Museum installs extra roof insulation during new roof construction.

In recent years, the Flagler Museum has undertaken numerous initiatives to make Whitehall more “green.” These initiatives not only make the Museum’s operations more environmentally friendly, but have also significantly reduced the cost of utilities. The greenest strategy of all, of course, is to make sure existing structures and their enhancements last as long as possible, so the Museum’s first priority has been to choose highquality and durable materials to help preserve the buildings in the Museum’s care. The Museum’s green efforts began in earnest with the installation of

Whitehall’s climate control system. Installed in November, 1999, it utilizes numerous green features to increase efficiencies and lower costs. A chilled water system was chosen because it is super-efficient, and a custom-built templifier was added to recapture heat produced by the system, thereby adding to the savings. Chillers cool the air to reduce humidity levels, but during this process they generate heat. The templifier captures this heat and reuses it to return the cold air to normal room temperature when it comes off the chillers. Cyclical maintenance of the climate control system is also now being managed in-house, utilizing new vendors,

which has resulted in significant savings and a great reduction in electricity usage. Recently, a new highly efficient air conditioning system replaced the old system serving the 1925 Whitehall Hotel addition areas, which is now centrally controlled. The system is quieter and more efficient than the previous units, and provides humidity control in these areas as well. This system has been designed to last much longer than the previous system. Whitehall received a new Spanish tile roof in 1999, with a high-tech laminate laid under the tile for

added insulation. For extra strength and durability against storms, every roof tile was secured with a stainless steel screw, and spruce stringers were used under cap tiles. The Hotel addition’s roof was also replaced with a higher-efficiency material. These features save money and insure that the roofs will last a long time in Florida’s punishing climate.

results in fewer maintenance visits and uses less electricity.

efficient lighting in the near future.

During the construction of the Flagler Kenan Pavilion, which began in 2003, durable and efficient materials were chosen. The roof of the Pavilion utilizes “High E” glass, which consists of two layers of glass with invisible ceramic dots sealed in between, to reflect more light. This glass greatly reduces the heat load on the building. The Museum’s most recent construction project, to add offices, workspaces, and an elevator to the Hotel addition, incorporated numerous green choices. The elevator, for example, is powered by a highly efficient motor attached directly to the cab that utilizes fewer moving parts than most elevator motors. This motor design

Maintenance efforts at the Museum have also been designed with preservation and efficiency in mind. Huge strides have been made towards repairing and sealing all of Whitehall’s original exterior windows against the weather, which keeps water out and lowers air conditioning bills. All Museum windows have also been filmed to help reduce their heat load. Green choices have also been made in day to day upkeep of the Museum. High quality, longlasting, and efficient compact fluorescent bulbs have been utilized wherever possible. This year alone, the Museum staff has retired over 200 incandescent bulbs, which has provided significant energy and labor savings. LED lighting is being implemented in exhibit cases and the Museum Store, and soon all exterior lighting will be LED, which uses about 1/10 of the energy of halogen lights and requires much less maintenance. Plans also call for switching the temporary exhibit gallery to more

Nearly all of the Museum’s printed material, including this magazine, are printed on paper from sustainable growth forests certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Their “certified content” label shows that a product’s fiber content comes from legal and responsible forests practicing sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, and wildlife habitat. The SFI standard is used widely across North America, and has strong global acceptance. Automatic toilet flushers and faucets, which reduce water use, have been installed in the Museum’s restrooms. A recycling program has been implemented to reclaim the tremendous amounts of glass and plastic waste generated by events, and also for waste from daily operations. And, throughout the facility, more environmentallyfriendly cleaning products and equipment are being selected in an effort to provide greener alternatives while assuring the preservation of Whitehall.

Music Series concludes March 8th The Lincoln Trio will perform the last concert of the 2011 Flagler Museum Music Series on March 8th. Internationally recognized as one of the world’s finest trios, they have spent years honing their iconic sound. The Lincoln Trio is the ensemble-in-residence at the Music Institute of Chicago, and has become Chicago’s most celebrated chamber ensemble. Formed in 2003, the Trio’s polished presentations of well-known chamber works earned critical acclaim, including “they are one of the best trios that I have ever heard” (Classical Voice of New England), and “bewitching” (Strad Magazine).

Founder’s Day Celebrates Jean Flagler Matthews On June 5th each year the Flagler Museum celebrates its anniversary by opening to the public free of charge in honor of the Museum’s founder, and Henry Flagler’s granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews. Visitors may take a self-guided tour of Whitehall, view the permanent collection of art and objects related to the Gilded Age, and climb aboard Henry Flagler’s Railcar No. 91. Mrs. Matthews learned Whitehall was for sale after the luxury hotel went bankrupt in 1958. She purchased

the property, and established the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum on June 5, 1959. Mrs. Matthews led an extensive restoration project, during which the hotel tower addition was removed, and many of Whitehall’s original objects were returned. She also hosted a Restoration Ball, the re-installation of the original 1,249 pipe organ, and chaired the Museum’s benefit concert with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Leonard Bernstein in 1960.

Museum invites Members to Independence Day Celebration

Each Fourth of July the Museum invites Members at the Sustaining level and above to enjoy the best view of the fireworks from the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. The Pavilion will be decorated with the 24 versions of the American Flag that flew over the nation during Henry Flagler’s lifetime.

Couples Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Cafe des Beaux-Arts Henry Flagler built Whitehall as a wedding present for his wife and it remains one of America’s most romantic destinations. About 100 people chose to celebrate Valentine’s Day amidst the elegance of Whitehall and enjoyed a special Gilded Age Style Teafor-Two in Café des Beaux-Arts. Each couple received Tea-for-Two, a Valentine’s Day rose, keepsake photo, a box of Whitehall Chocolates, and a $15 gift card to the Museum Store.

In addition to the fireworks, the celebration will include a reading of the Declaration of Independence and live music. The festivities begin at 8:00 p.m. with lemonade and ice cream on the Pavilion Terrace. Members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. For more information about Membership call (561) 655- 2833.

LASTING LEGACY: Flagler Statue Dedicated Hundreds gathered on December 11th as eight school children unveiled a bronze statue of Henry Flagler. The dedication ceremony was the official start of the Town of Palm Beach’s Centennial celebration. During the dedication, Centennial Commission Chairman Bill Bone, Mayor Jack McDonald, and Flagler Museum Trustee G.F. Robert Hanke spoke of Henry Flagler’s accomplishments. Of which Hanke, Flagler’s great-grandson, said “No other individual has had a more positive or lasting influence than Henry Flagler has had on Florida.” The honor of unveiling the statue went to eight school children who submitted essays about Henry Flagler. The children were from Palm Beach Day Academy, Palm Beach Public School, and Rosarian Academy. The statue is located on the western-most median of Royal Poinciana Way, and welcomes drivers arriving via the bridge also named in his honor. The statue is a reproduction of one created in 1902 and unveiled in St. Augustine in 1916.

Flagler Museum Awarded Multiple Grants The Flagler Museum was awarded a Preservation Assistance Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as a grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation. These generous grants will support an assessment and conservation training project for approximately 1,300 drawings of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad. The project’s goal is to begin the process of making these drawings accessible for research and display, further facilitating the study of history and historical preservation. The drawings are part of the larger Over-Sea Railroad collection within the Flagler Museum Archives, which includes tens of thousands of documents that tell the story of Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad. The completing of that historic railroad was described by Secretary of State and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Elihu Root as “second only to the Panama Canal in its political and commercial importance to the United States.”

The Museum has also received a Leading Edge Grant from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties that provides matching funds for a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This generous funding will support

the Museum’s Spanish audio tour translation, enabling the Museum to reach a diverse audience of local and international visitors to enhance knowledge of the history and culture of Palm Beach County and America’s Gilded Age.

Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad is considered the greatest engineering feat ever undertaken by a private individual. Some 1,300 drawings chronicling the construction will be conserved thanks to two generous grants.

Museum Hosts Palm Beach Civic Association Meeting The Flagler Museum will host the Palm Beach Civic Association Meeting at 10:00 a.m. on April 4, 2011. The Museum is honored to host the annual event where the Mayor will also give the State of

the Town Address. The event will be held in the West Room, and is open to all Palm Beach residents. Please contact the Palm Beach Civic Association for more information, (561) 655-0820.
