Museum Now Offers French Audio Tours The Flagler Museum added a new French language translation to its self-guide audio tour handsets on January 2nd. The audio tour handsets now feature English, Spanish, and French translations, and a German translation will be added by January 2013.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.
All Flagler Museum tours are free with Museum admission. The new French audio tour makes the Flagler Museum the only Museum in Palm Beach County to provide a free audio tour to French speaking visitors. Other Palm Beach County organizations offer foreign language options, but charge an additional fee. After a quick survey of major national museums, the Flagler Museum is among only a handful of major institutions to offer free foreign language audio tours. The new audio tour translations were made possible through a grant awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Flagler Museum Executive Director, John Blades enthused, “This grant will provide the funding to dramatically improve the visitors’ experience among international visitors to the Flagler Museum.” The three-year grant will increase the Visitors enjoying the French language audio tour wands. The Flagler Museum is open year round, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays and on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Admission is $18 for adults, $10 for youth ages 13-17, $3 for children ages 6-12, and children under 6 are free. Admission is free for Members. Special rates are available for groups. The Museum and grounds are wheelchair accessible.

The 8th Annual Bluegrass in The Pavilion concert continues to bring the best Bluegrass musicians to South Florida. This year, Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers and The Boxcars will perform great Bluegrass music at this National Historic Landmark. All proceeds from the concert benefit South Arts’ emergency planning for Gulf Coast cultural institutions. Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers have been praised for their robust vocals and commitment to a traditional Bluegrass style. Joe Mullins has been a highly regarded banjo player, vocalist, and radio broadcaster for 25 years. He has won several International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards for his various projects. Music critics and fans alike rave about the group’s latest CD, “Hymns From the Hills” with such praise as “I believe this is one of the best CDs I’ve heard in a long time” (Kyle Cantrell, Bluegrass Junction, Sirius XM).
The Boxcars The new Bluegrass supergroup, The Boxcars, are sure to wow the Flagler Museum audience with their unique style of contemporary Bluegrass laced with band member Adam Steffey’s traditional rhythms. Each member of The Boxcars has an impressive musical history, with time spent in Alison Krauss & Union Station, J.D. Crowe & The New South, The Isaacs, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and The Dan Tyminski Band. The Boxcars’ award winning instrumentalist Ron Stewart delivers rock solid banjo work. While it is a rarity to have multiple strong vocalists in the same group, The Boxcars benefit from strong vocal performances from Keith Garrett, John Bowman and Steffey’s signature baritone. The group’s live shows are quickly winning over critics like John Lawless of the Bluegrass Blog who said, “I was heartily impressed by The Boxcars. Their show was crisp and well-paced, with just enough conversation with the audience to make a permanent connection.” The band were nominated for nine 2011 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards and were honored to bring home four of those awards during the
awards show last October. The Boxcars won two awards as a band: Emerging Artist of the Year and Instrumental Group of the Year. Ron Stewart and Adam Steffey also received awards individually; Ron for Banjo Player of the Year and Adam for Mandolin Player of the Year.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt & Easter Egg Roll Children are invited to hunt for more than 5,000 eggs on the Museum’s lawns. The Museum grounds will be sectioned off into age-appropriate areas so everyone, including toddlers, will have an opportunity to participate. Museum gates open at 9:00 a.m. when children may have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny, and create Easter-themed art. The Easter Egg Hunt begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. After the hunt, children are invited to join in special games, including the Gilded Age game of egg rolling. Egg rolling began on the South Lawn of the White House when President Rutherford B. Hayes welcomed children to the first White House Easter Egg Roll in 1878. Special prizes will be awarded to the game winners. Children are encouraged to bring their own Easter baskets. Wooden egg rolling spoons will be provided. An accomplished designer, artist and author, Mr. Loring has written many books on the work of Tiffany & Co., Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Tiffany Studios, history and entertaining. Independence Day Celebration There is no better place than the Flagler Museum to enjoy the fireworks over Lake Worth on the Fourth of July. Sign up for Summer camp Join us for an exciting week of Summer Camp at the Flagler Museum. Campers will explore the forensic and investigative techniques used to solve some of the most infamous crimes of the Gilded Age (1865-1929). Interactive exercises will include collecting evidence, fingerprint analysis, blood-typing, footprint analysis, hair and fiber examination, and recording eyewitness accounts. Recent Acquisitions Illuminate Flagler’s Maritime Interests

The Flagler Museum recently acquired a tiny porcelain object, dating to a few significant years in the history of Henry Flagler’s maritime operations, with a big story to tell. The three inch high creamer was made in England by John Maddock & Sons between 1897 and 1900. It bears the name of the S.S. Miami, a steam-powered ship built by Flagler’s Florida East Coast Steamship Company to operate between Miami and the Bahamas. While Henry Flagler’s railroad and hotel businesses are widely known, his maritime interests are less so. Key to the success of the land-based operations, however, was good maritime transportation for both goods and people. Beginning in the early 1890s, the FEC’s first steamships operated on the Indian River and southward, delivering construction supplies and later visitors for FEC hotels in Palm Beach and Miami. Flagler’s steamers eventually made stops along the coast to Key West, the Bahamas, and Cuba.
Above the S.S. Miami’s name on the creamer appear three flags: the United States Flag, Henry Flagler’s private signal, and the British Red Ensign. By the late 1890s, Flagler’s Florida East Coast Hotel Company operated two hotels – the Royal Victoria Hotel and the Colonial Hotel - in Nassau, Bahamas, a British colony until 1973. Steamship service provided a necessary link between Florida and the Bahamas. The Red Ensign would normally have been flown by merchant ships of the British Empire, but it was also used as a token of respect by ships visiting from other countries. The appearance of Henry Flagler’s private signal might seem surprising on a steamship operated by his company. This flag was developed for his personal use, and was flown by Flagler on his private yachts Eclipse, Columbia, and Alicia. But Flagler’s signal was also utilized on the ships of the Florida East Coast Line.

The Florida East Coast Steamship Company established direct service to Nassau from Palm Beach in January, 1896. Because the water was so shallow, ships moored at the massive steel pier built by Henry Flagler directly off the Palm Beach Inn, later renamed The Breakers Hotel. Remnants of the old steel pier can still be seen today during very low tides. Steamer service to Nassau was soon relocated to Miami, which was closer to Nassau. On June 28, 1897, Flagler commissioned William Cramp and Sons of Philadelphia to build the S.S. Miami specifically for the Miami to Nassau route. Completed in only four months, the project set a record for steamship construction. A steel twin-screw and twin-stack steamer, the Miami was 239.2 feet long. On its trial run, the ship broke all existing steamship speed records. The New York Times described her as “the finest equipped ship of her class in the country, if not in the world.” Every room had modern luxuries such as electric lights and fans. The two decks and three tiers of staterooms were elaborately decorated and finished in fine materials such as white mahogany and gold. The dining room deck had a central glass dome.
The Miami was launched in October, 1897 and christened by Miss Julie Russell Parsons, daughter of R.M. Parsons, General Manager of the New York and Cuban Mail Steamship Company, an FEC subsidiary. Before the ceremony, Miss Parsons was presented with a gold and enamel pin representing Henry Flagler’s private signal. The Flagler Museum’s collection includes one of these stick pins, made by the John Frick Jewelry Company in New York, with the signal depicted in blue and white enamel. Similar pins were worn by Flagler and given as gifts at other christening ceremonies. The S.S. Miami carried its first passengers to Nassau in January, 1898. After the Spanish-American War ended Cuba became a desirable tourist destination, and soon the FEC established steamer service from Key West to Havana in addition to the Miami to Nassau and Miami to Key West routes. On July 1, 1900, after the death of Henry Plant, the Florida East Coast Steamship Company merged with the Plant Steamship Line. The new, more powerful company, called the Peninsular & Occidental Steamship Company, was led by Henry

Flagler. A Tampa to Key West route was soon established in addition to the East Coast Line’s three routes. A new signal – a variation on Flagler’s signal with “P & O” in the center - was developed for the P & O Line. A porcelain cup recently donated to the Flagler Museum is an example of the china pattern developed for P & O ships around the same time, bearing the diamond-shaped logo from the center of the signal. The Miami served the line until dry docked in 1925 and sold in 1932. She was operated in the Northeast until scrapped in 1949.
Awards and Grants The Flagler Museum was recently awarded several grants that will greatly impact its ability to educate the public about Henry Flagler, Florida’s history, and America’s Gilded Age. The Museum’s SmARTBIZ Grant funded the purchase of a large format printer that enables the Public Affairs Department to produce more materials in-house, greatly enhancing marketing, signage, and interpretation. The SmARTBIZ Program, a collaborative of PNC and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, directly supports capacity-building for local cultural organizations. The Daphne Seybolt Culpeper Memorial Foundation’s grant will help to support the 27th Annual Whitehall Lecture Series, Great Engineering Feats of the Gilded Age. The Graham-Eckes Palm Beach Academy Foundation grant will help fund the printing of the Tour & Activity Guide for Kids, which offers high-interest activities that encourage families to explore the Museum together.
The Mosaic Foundation (of R&P Heydon) provided grant funding to support the Museum’s Detailed Furniture Survey, providing a partial match for the Museum’s Institute of Museum and Library Services Conservation Project Support grant. The Stockman Family Foundation awarded a generous grant to support the conservation of the art cases of Whitehall’s two Steinway pianos, a Pianola, and a matching Piano Roll Shelf and Screen. Treatment of the piano art cases and furniture will enable the Museum to complete its restoration of two of Whitehall’s most important rooms – the Drawing Room and the Music Room. These generous grants will enable the Museum to continue to preserve, research, and interpret Whitehall and our country’s rich history for millions of visitors from around the world.
Museum’s Education Department Travels to The Keys
Students in the Florida Keys celebrate the Centennial of the Over-Sea Railroad. On January 22, 1912, 10,000 people welcomed Henry Flagler to Key West in celebration of the completion of the Over-Sea Railroad, the most ambitious engineering feat ever undertaken by a private citizen. To commemorate this occasion, the Flagler Museum Education Department and the authors of the children’s historical novel, Kidnapped in Key West partnered to share this moment in history with the students of Monroe County. Museum Staff, along with authors Annelle Rigsby and Edwina Raffa, and Monroe County School District representative Jeanne Sanford traveled throughout schools in the Florida Keys to share the story of Henry Flagler and his historic railroad. In total, the program was presented at seven schools and educated over 450 4th grade students on Florida history,
the Over-Sea Railroad, and the Flagler Museum. The students listened to a presentation introducing Henry Flagler as a primary historic figure in the development of the east coast of Florida. Then, students participated in a reenactment of the arrival of the first train in Key West. At each school, a student was chosen to dress as Henry Flagler, and the other students acted as the 10,000 spectators that celebrated the arrival of the train. Patriotic songs were played on musical instruments and sung aloud while streamers were waved and the crowd cheered. After the excitement of the celebration, the students viewed a virtual tour of Henry Flagler’s private railcar No. 91. The authors concluded the program by reading a chapter from their book, Kidnapped in Key West.
Museum Donates Last Train to Paradise books to Libraries In conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the completion of Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railroad, nearly 3,000 copies of a Centennial Library Edition of Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad That Crossed an Ocean were sent to every library, historical society, history museum, college, university, public and private
school in Florida’s 19 East Coast counties and in Leon County, home of the state capital. Schools also received an accompanying lesson plan with related activities for students. The program was underwritten by the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust and the Museum’s Members and Contributors.
Gallery Talks On February 28th, the Flagler Museum hosted Gallery Talks by Margaret Hofer, Curator of Decorative Arts at the New-York Historical Society, related to the winter exhibition “A New Light on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls”. Interest in the the Gallery Talk was so strong that three presentations were scheduled. Ms. Hofer enlightened attendees on Louis Comfort Tiffany, the Tiffany Girls, and their previously unknown work with the company.

Children’s Exhibit Activity In early February, the Flagler Museum hosted a Children’s Exhibit Activity that featured a gallery tour and craft activity. The focus of this Winter’s Exhibit Activity was “A New Light on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls.” Children were introduced to Tiffany Studios and the Tiffany Girls and their work, then, crafted their own Tiffany-inspired stained glass lamp shades. The goal of the Activity was to foster an appreciation among children for the art and craft of Tiffany stained glass and to understand better the significance of the Tiffany Girls’ contributions to the Studio’s history. Children first created cartoons, or templates for their designs, next, they chose a color pattern to complement the template, then, they applied the color pieces to their lamp shades.
Music Series Artist Conducts Master Class On March 7th the Flagler Museum sponsored a Master Class for music students at the Bak Middle School of the Arts with internationally acclaimed violinist Joanna Marie Frankel, who performed as part of the Flagler Museum Music Series on March 6th. The class provided students with one-on-one training, helping them perfect techniques and improve their musical expression. The class is one of the many educational community outreach programs organized by the Flagler Museum.

Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 7, 2012 Gates open at 9:00 a.m. Adults $18 Children $7 Free for Members (and their children or grandchildren) at the Sustaining level and above Children are invited to hunt for more than 5,000 eggs on the Museum’s lawns. The Museum grounds will be sectioned off into ageappropriate areas so everyone, including toddlers, will have an opportunity to participate. Museum gates open at 9:00 a.m. when children may have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny, and create Easter themed art.
