Last Chance for Stories in Sterling Don’t miss the opportunity to see The Winter Exhibition Stories in Sterling: Four Centuries of Silver in New York, on view through April 20th. “The exhibit, is a must-see for anyone interested in fine art ...”- Dr. Clifford Cunningham, Sun News Miami.

Black, Starr & Frost (active 18741929), Aeronautical trophy, 1907. Silver, wood. New-York Historical Society.

This exhibition interprets nearly 200 important pieces of silver within their cultural context, focusing on the men and women that made, used, and treasured these objects. Featured objects shed light on four centuries of silver production and use in the United States. The exhibition includes a selection of paintings, prints, photographs, manuscripts, and other items that illuminate understanding of the silver, bring to life the individuals who acquired it, and illustrate the physical context in which it was used.

Organized by the New-York Historical Society, Stories in Sterling highlights New York as an important producer and consumer of silver objects. Linked to significant moments in the history of New York and the United States, the remarkable objects in the exhibition range from domestic family heirlooms to acknowledged touchstones in the evolution of American silversmithing. The diversity of stories speak to themes that include individual accomplishment, family pride, silver consumption patterns, technological progress and innovation, rituals of presentation, and the commemoration of great events in peace and war. The exhibition is sponsored by Northern Trust, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and The Palm Beach Post.

Blue Room Restored to

The Blue Room, a second floor guest room, as it appeared when Whitehall was completed in 1902.

T

he Flagler Museum’s Blue Room has been returned to its original appearance, when Henry and Mary Lily Flagler lived at Whitehall. This restoration was made possible by the recent acquisition and conservation of furniture original to the room.

Like the public rooms on the first floor of Whitehall, each of the second floor bedrooms is unique in design, named after its primary color or decorating scheme. Guided by historical documents and photographs, the Museum has

worked tirelessly for decades to return these rooms to their original appearances. Several donations over decades have finally made it possible to restore the Blue Room to its original appearance. Whitehall’s interiors were designed by the New York firm Pottier & Stymus, founded in 1859 by Auguste Pottier and William Stymus. Pottier & Stymus was one of the most prominent decorating and cabinetmaking firms of its day, with a client list that included William Rockefeller, Leland Stanford, and President Ulysses S. Grant. Henry

Flagler was a major patron of the firm, utilizing them for projects ranging from homes to churches. The Blue Room’s elaborately carved, painted, and gilded Louis XVI-style furniture was almost certainly produced by, or under the direction of, Pottier & Stymus.

A furniture conservator carefully applies gold leaf to carved decorative elements from a writing desk.

Museum staff reassembled the Blue Room furniture after its return to Whitehall.

After the deaths of both Henry and Mary Lily Flagler, much of the contents of Whitehall were given to family and friends by their heir, Mary Lily’s niece, Louise Wise Lewis. The Blue Room furniture was given by Mrs. Lewis in 1924 to a good friend, Frances Kidder Curtzwiler, before Whitehall was sold. In 1987, six pieces of the suite were donated to the Flagler Museum in memory of Louise Wise Lewis by Frances Kidder Curtzwiler and her daughter, Anne Kidder Beatty. Six more pieces of the Blue Room suite were donated in 2010 by Frances Fielding Lewis Beatty and William Henry Anthony Beatty, in memory of Anne Kidder Beatty. The Museum now has nearly every piece of furniture original to the room: a dresser, dressing table, writing desk, table, double bed, two bedside tables, chaise lounge, two armchairs, and two side chairs. The entire suite of furniture original to the Blue Room was in need of conservation, which a team of conservators carried out in 2013. The work was made possible through grants from the Wise Foundation, the Fortin Foundation of Florida, Inc., the Mosaic Foundation (of R&P Heydon), and the Stockman Family Foundation Trust. As the result of generous donations of historic furniture and conservation treatment grants, the room once again appears as it did when it was completed in 1902.

Flagler Bust returns to Library

Schoolchildren laid flowers at the base of the statue of Henry Flagler in St. Augustine during the dedication ceremony on January 2, 1916. The statue stands today at Flagler College.

A marble bust of Henry Flagler, created in 1901, has returned to Whitehall’s Library for the first time since 1925. The bust, generously donated by James G. Kenan III, was recently featured in the Flagler Museum’s Fall Exhibition, Man of the Century: The Incomparable Legacy of Henry Morrison Flagler, and is now on display in the Library on a custom-designed mahogany pedestal. The bust, created in Rome by an unidentified sculptor, was almost certainly commissioned by Mary Lily Flagler. The same artist, known to us only by his initials “C.J.R.,” also created four female allegorical sculptures placed by the Flaglers in the corners of Whitehall’s Grand Hall, as well at the life-sized bronze of Henry Flagler that now stands at the entrance to Flagler College in St. Augustine. The 1925 inventory made after the sale of Whitehall and before the contents were dispersed by the Flaglers’ heirs, listed the work as “bust of Mr. Flagler with pedestal” located in the Library. The bust is closely

related to a full-length bronze statue of Flagler, created by the same artist in 1902 and dedicated in St. Augustine in 1916. The bronze was commissioned by Mary Lily Flagler in 1901. Henry Flagler resisted the idea of the public display of this statue and, as a consequence, the statue and marble bust remained in storage for more than a decade. The bronze statue was erected in St. Augustine’s Railroad Park by the Florida East Coast Railway in 1915, and was dedicated on Flagler’s birthday, January 2, 1916.

At the 1916 dedication of the Flagler bronze, James Ingraham, vice president of the FEC, eulogized Flagler, noting his contributions to the state and his great modesty. On asking Flagler about his motivations to develop Florida, Ingraham noted that “…he believed that his fortune had been given him for a definite purpose, which was, ‘To help his fellowmen to help themselves,’ and this he could do better in Florida than anywhere.”

Museum Honored with Prestigious Muse Award

John Blades, Executive Director, accepts the Muse Award for Excellence in Historical and Cultural Heritage at the Kravis Center, March 13th.

The Flagler Museum was presented a 2014 Muse Award for Excellence in Historical and Cultural Heritage from the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. The Muse Awards are presented biennially and recognize outstanding cultural contributions made in our community. The Museum previously won the Muse Award in 2008 when the Newspapers in Education Tabloid, Flagler’s Florida, was honored as the Program of the Year. Criteria used in selecting Muse award winners included demonstrated excellence in producing a program with a significant historical theme and measurable impact upon participants. In 2012, the Flagler Museum commemorated the Centennial of the Over-Sea Railroad’s completion through the preservation of important collections and dozens of programs and outreach activities. Hundreds of thousands of students,

visitors, and audience members from virtually every state and dozens of foreign countries toured the special exhibition, read the commemorative edition of Last Train to Paradise, participated in an in-school program, or attended a lecture about the OSRR. The Muse Awards Selection Committee felt that the Flagler Museum demonstrated Excellence in Historical and Cultural Heritage by providing the public with the opportunity to learn about and celebrate this important historical event. The Muse Award selection process was very competitive and the Museum’s selection as the recipient from among Palm Beach County’s accomplished cultural community is a great honor. The presentation took place at the Muse Awards Gala at the Kravis Center on March 13th.

Flagler Museum Community Outreach Recently, the Flagler Museum’s Education Department hosted a table at the West Palm Beach Green Market to spread the word about this season’s annual children’s programming. Children and their families enjoyed a free craft activity, interpretive materials, and an invitation to attend the Children’s Exhibit Activity in coordination with Stories in Sterling, the 2014 Winter Exhibit. “The opportunity to interact with the local community in this way and personally invite families to visit the Museum and explore the various, quality programming that the Museum offers, was one that we couldn’t let pass.” said Education Director, Allison Goff. Children were given the materials to make a bookmark featuring Henry Flagler. In addition to attending the Green Market, the Flagler Museum sponsored local artist, Dalhia Perryman, in this year’s Lake Worth Street Painting Festival. Dalhia is an award winning teaching artist. She focused her artwork on a portrait of Henry Flagler complemented by a depiction of the façade of Whitehall. The goal of our sponsoring an artist at the Festival was to engage

with a wide audience through vibrant, all-ages visual art, while also remembering and celebrating Henry Flagler’s legacy.

Valentines Day in the Café des Beaux Arts

Valentines Day in the Café des Beaux Arts is a memorable way to spend the afternoon with that special someone. Dozens of couples enjoyed a special Gilded Age style Tea-for-Two in the picturesque Flagler Kenan Pavilion. The package also included a Valentines Day rose, keepsake photograph, small box

of Whitehall Gourmet Chocolates, and a $15 gift card to the Museum Store. Henry Flagler built this BeauxArts mansion as a wedding present for his wife Mary Lily in 1902. Whitehall has been one of America’s most romantic destinations for more than 100 years.

Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out

Saturday, April 12, 2014 3:00 p.m. (Doors open at 2:30 p.m.) Tickets $35 The 10th Annual Bluegrass in the Pavilion concert will continue the tradition of bringing the best Bluegrass musicians to South Florida. In 2014, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver will perform at this National Historic Landmark. All proceeds from the concert benefit South Arts’ emergency planning for Gulf Coast cultural institutions. With over 35 albums to their credit, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have multiple Grammy, Dove, ICM, IBMA and SPBGMA Award nominations, and are seven-time winners of IBMA’s Vocal Group of the

Year. Doyle Lawson received two nominations in the 17th Annual Inspirational Country Music (ICM) Awards held in Nashville on October 28, 2011, with fellow nominees including such Country giants as George Strait and Carrie Underwood. Lawson also won two IBMA Awards. Of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver’s performance at the August 2011 IBMA Awards Press Conference, which garnered three standing ovations from a sold-out crowd in Nashville, Craig Havighurst wrote: “There was no question who was going to close the show. Doyle Lawson is one of music’s lions at this point, and when he came out in perhaps the most beautiful western jacket I’ve ever seen... he was a holy vision. ... When DLQ, in quartet mode, nailed the final chorus of the a cappella gospel song ‘He Made It All Right,’ I swear we were mainlining the holy spirit. You know

n the Pavilion Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver

how the word awesome gets overused and misused? Here’s where it applies.” Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out have managed to climb to the top not just once, but twice—winning a slew of IBMA vocal awards, including two Male Vocalist of the Year honors, in the mid and late 1990s. Along the way, they’ve made a whole new generation of fans, and with the release of Timeless Hits From The Past... BLUEGRASSED by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, the quintet are poised to deliver their distinctive kind of music more widely than ever. In 1994, they earned the first of an unsurpassed seven consecutive IBMA awards for Vocal Group of the Year, along with Russell’s first Male Vocalist of the Year title. For the remainder of the decade and

into the new century, IIIrd Tyme Out was among the most important acts in the field, earning acclaim for the compelling artistry—especially vocal—they brought both to a string of well-received albums and to stages across the United States.
