Museum Celebrates Grandparents Day The Flagler Museum invites grandparents and their families to celebrate Grandparents Day at the Museum on September 11th. Family plays an important role in the history of the Flagler Museum. The Museum’s founder, Jean Flagler Matthews, was the granddaughter of Henry Flagler. She preserved Whitehall and its collections to honor her grandfather and educate visitors about the Gilded Age. Share your own family history by taking part in Grandparents Day events at the Flagler Museum. Tour Whitehall with a Tour and Activity Guide for Kids and then enjoy family-friendly activities in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Together families can create a family tree, design a scrapbook page to commemorate the day, write a postcard to send to family, and have a photo taken in front of Henry Flagler’s railcar, No. 91.

Museum Welcomes Hundreds for Annual Easter Egg Hunt The Easter Bunny made an early stop at the Flagler Museum on Saturday, April 23rd and welcomed nearly 650 people to the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Egg Roll. After meeting the Easter Bunny children created their own Easter themed art. Children were delighted by roaming balloon artists and face painters. Beginning at 10 a.m. youngsters age four and under hunted eggs with their families on

the Southeast Lawn. Afterward, older children raced for eggs on the South Lawn. In total children found about 5,000 eggs on the Museum grounds. Following a tradition begun by President Rutherford B. Hayes, who welcomed children to the first White House Easter Egg Roll in 1878, the Museum organized an Egg Roll for children in different age groups.

Special Easter baskets full of gifts were awarded to Egg Roll winners as well as children who found the “golden egg” during the egg hunts. The annual Easter Egg Hunt and Egg Roll has become a family tradition, so mark your calendars for the 2012 Egg Hunt on April 7th. Visit the Flagler Museum’s Facebook page for more images of this year’s Easter festivities.

Palm Beach Celebrates 100th Year at Flagler Museum The Town of Palm Beach’s Centennial festivities concluded at the Flagler Museum on April 17th with an extraordinary All-Town Celebration, that the likes of which will probably go unmatched in the next 100 years. Approximately 3,000 people turned out to enjoy an array of activities that included a parade of local businesses, schools, and civic organizations. Free birthday cake was handed out as everyone watched a jam-packed show of local musicians and performers. Town residents who generously sponsored the event had front row seats to the event, that included a moving performance from the 100 member Youth Singers of the Palm Beaches. Among the dignitaries speaking at the event were: Florida Governor Rick Scott, Congressional Representative Allen West, Mayor of Palm Beach Gail Coniglio, and Town Council members. The event culminated with a 3-D light show that awed the crowd. State-of-the-art architectural mapping was used to transform Whitehall’s facade into a dynamic

3-D canvas to tell the story of Palm Beach. From the dramatic grounding of the Providencia to the arrival of Henry Flagler’s railway, the light show highlighted the many things that have made Palm Beach a unique town for 100 years. The night ended with a fireworks show over Lake Worth.

Recent Aqusitions Three oil paintings of southern genre scenes by American William Aiken Walker (1838-1921) were recently donated to the Museum by Jean S. Tailer. The intimate works, depicting everyday life on the southern farm in minute detail, are typical of the artist’s popular paintings and will make great additions to the paintings found in the living spaces on Whitehall’s second floor. Walker is largely known for documenting the lives of African Americans in the South, he also created many striking paintings of fish, like those featured in the Museum’s 2006 exhibit “The Blue God and the Silver King: The Origins of Sport Fishing on Florida’s Southeast Coast.” A collection of four English inkstands, made in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, were donated by Dr. and Mrs. James T. Duncan. The varied collection includes a simple, classically-inspired brass urn with figurative handles; a brass Egyptian Revival inkstand with sphinxes; a cobalt blue porcelain inkwell with gold floral decoration on brass stand; and an exuberant brass inkstand with a three-dimensional stag and doe in a rocky landscape. The objects will be perfect accents to several of the many writing

desks on display at Whitehall. The Museum also recently acquired a beautiful brass marine clock made in 1911 for the Florida East Coast Railway by the Chelsea Clock Co. of Chelsea, Massachusetts. Probably ordered by Henry Flagler himself for use in a railcar, the clock was custom engraved with “FEC” on the dial. Considered among the best clocks of the time, Chelsea marine clocks were used extensively by the U.S. Navy and other government departments. Two recent acquisitions have interesting local connections. A seven-piece ice cream serving set with handles in the shape of palm tree trunks, and palm fronds on the bowls, was donated by Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf. The set, of sterling silver with gold wash, consists of a large serving spoon and 6 smaller spoons, each marked with “Palm Beach, Florida” on the handle. The early souvenir set was made ca. 1900 by Gorham for Greenleaf & Crosby, which had retail outlets in Flagler’s Hotel Royal Poinciana in Palm Beach and Hotel Alcazar in St. Augustine. The ice cream set

was surely purchased at the Hotel Royal Poinciana, located just north of Whitehall, and taken to England by winter visitors to Palm Beach. The Museum also recently purchased a catalog of Floridathemed merchandise offered by Greenleaf & Crosby. Souvenirs of Sunny South illustrates the palm tree spoons - and others with alligators, oranges, and the old Spanish coat of arms for St. Augustine - as well as fruit knives, mugs, pins, letter openers, and other personal items. The Flagler Museum collection includes similar examples of popular souvenirs of Florida tourism during the Gilded Age. F.E.C. Marine clock, made in 1911 by the Chelsea Clock Co.

Museum Celebrates Florida History Month with Student Reenactment

The Museum celebrated Florida History Month with a special activity. Schools were invited to hear novelists Edwina Raffa and Annelle Rigsby discuss the historical importance of Henry Flagler’s FEC Railway, and why the railway was the perfect backdrop for their thrilling novel “Kidnapped in Key West.” The authors also read passages from their children’s book. In an activity that was both inspiring and educational, children reenacted Henry Flagler’s 1912 arrival in Key West, complete with singing traditional songs, cheering, and a student dressed as Henry Flagler. After the reenactment students toured historic Railcar No. 91, and participated in an art activity. Each child left the event with a free copy of “Kidnapped in Key West” as a gift from the Museum.

Thousands Expected On Founder’s Day The Flagler Museum is busy preparing for the annual Founder’s Day on June 5th. Each year the Flagler Museum celebrates its anniversary by opening to the public free of charge in honor of the Museum’s founder, and Henry Flagler’s granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews. Visitors may take a self-guided tour of Whitehall, view the permanent collection of art and objects from the Gilded Age, and go aboard Henry Flagler’s Railcar No. 91. Founder’s Day is Sponsored by The Palm Beach Post.

Museum Awarded Multiple Grants The Flagler Museum was recently awarded several grants. A grant from The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation will enable the Education Department to continue to provide high-quality programming for schoolchildren and for the visiting public. Another education grant from Bank of America Charitable Foundation will support the Intergenerational Mentor Program for Arts, Culture, and Technology (IMPACT). The Education Department has also received funding

from the Graham-Eckes Palm Beach Academy Foundation to support its popular Tour & Activity Guide for Kids. Additional support has been provided by the Wise Foundation, which has awarded the Museum a grant to help support the construction of new shelving for the Henry Flagler Harris Research Library. The Museum is grateful for the generosity of these funders, whose support will greatly enhance the Flagler Museum’s ability to meet its important mission.

Education program with IMPACT The Flagler Museum welcomed 20 students from U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School for the Intergenerational Mentor Program for Art, Culture, and Technology (IMPACT). The five-week mentoring program focused on improving creative writing skills while building intergenerational relationships. Activities included special tours of historic Whitehall and Railcar No. 91, and seeing objects from the Museum’s Archives that are not on display. The IMPACT Program is offered twice annually to local schools to supplement classroom learning. For the past 25 years the Flagler Museum has worked closely with the School District of Palm Beach County to involve and select schools for the IMPACT program. IMPACT is one of the Museum’s many youth educational programs geared toward encouraging interest in history and the arts.

A VISIT FROM THE VATICAN The Flagler Museum was honored with a visit in March by His Eminence, Giovanni Cardinal Lajolo, President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and of the Governorate of Vatican City State. Many departments of Vatican City’s government report to the Governorate, including the Vatican Museums. From left to right, are: His Eminence, Cardinal Lajolo; Tracy Kamerer, Flagler Museum Chief Curator; and Reverend Kenneth D. Whittaker, Our Lady of Mercy Church, Deerfield Beach.

Record Crowd Attends Annual Bluegrass Concert It was standing room only inside the Flagler Kenan Pavilion for the Museum’s Annual Bluegrass Concert. Dailey & Vincent and Grasstown drew a record crowd to the seventh annual concert. The proceeds benefited South Arts. Each year in April the Museum brings the best Blugrass musicians to South Florida to benefit the South Arts’ emergency planning for Gulf Coast cultural institutions. This year Grammy nominated Dailey & Vincent made a return to the Pavilion Stage playing hits off their latest album, “Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® Presents Dailey & Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers.” The New York Times recently described Dailey & Vincent as “the most celebrated new bluegrass act of the last few years,” and audiences agree with sold out shows nationwide. Grasstowne also returned to Palm Beach with a fresh new line up of songs and some new members. They played selections from their new album, “Kickin up Dust.” The lively group also playfully interacted with the audience, and are sure to become favorites of Bluegrass fans everywhere.
