Game Celebrates Flagler Legacy in Fun, Educational Format In commemoration of the centennial of the end of Henry Flagler’s extraordinary life, the Museum Store has produced a new fun-filled family game. Follow Henry Flagler as he builds a host of luxury resorts and hotels while developing the Florida East Coast Railway (From Jacksonville, all the way to Key West) and accomplishes the greatest feat of engineering ever completed by a private citizen, the Over-Sea Railroad. Players may choose from a variety of tokens reminiscent of Henry Flagler’s legacy, including Delos, Henry’s German spitz, and Railcar No. 91, his private railcar. Flagleropoly is now available in the Museum Store and on the website for $30 ($27 for Members).

The Flagler Museum is open year round, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Admission is $18 for adults, $10 for youth ages 13-17, $3 for children ages 6-12, and children under 6 are free. Admission is free for Members. Special rates are available for groups. The Museum and grounds are wheelchair accessible.

Museum’s IMPACT The Flagler Museum welcomed 20 students from U.B. Kinsey/ Palmview Elementary School for the Intergenerational Mentor Program for Art, Culture, and Technology (IMPACT). The five-week mentoring program focused on improving creative writing skills while building intergenerational relationships between students and Museum Docent mentors. The program culminated with a special tour of Whitehall for the families of students, and was followed by an awards ceremony and refreshments.
Students met with mentors at the Flagler Museum weekly to tour Whitehall and Railcar No. 91, and view featured objects in Whitehall’s collection. IMPACT is now in its 27th year as an educational program of the Flagler Museum in partnership with the School District of Palm Beach County providing students of underserved communities with rich cultural arts opportunities. IMPACT is offered to select schools in the Fall and Spring semesters.
Bluegrass in the Pavilion 2014 The 10th Annual Bluegrass in the Pavilion concert will once again bring the best Bluegrass musicians to South Florida on April 12th, 2014. The artists for this year’s performances will be Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.
Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out have managed to climb to the top not just once, but twice—winning a number of IBMA vocal awards, including two Male Vocalist of the Year honors, in the mid and late 1990s, and the Male Vocalist trophy for the past three years.
With over 35 albums to their credit, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have multiple Grammy, Dove, ICM, IBMA and SPBGMA Award nominations, and are seven-time winners of IBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year.
Tickets are $35. All proceeds from the concert benefit South Arts’ emergency planning for Gulf Coast cultural institutions.

Winter Exhibition Explores New York History through Silver Masterpieces
Tiffany & Co. (founded 1837), Cigar box, 1930. Silver. New-York Historical Society This lavish box, an example of Tiffany & Co’s “Special Hand Work,” was presented to Al Smith, the self-made New York politician who ascended from the Lower East Side to four terms as governor of the State of New York. From January 28 through April 20, 2014, the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum will present Stories in Sterling: Four Centuries of Silver in New York, an exhibition that interprets nearly 200 compelling pieces of silver within their cultural context, focusing on the men and women that made, used, and treasured these objects. Featured objects shed light on four centuries of silver production and use in the United States. The exhibition will be enriched by a selection of
paintings, prints, photographs, manuscripts, and other items that illuminate understanding of the silver, bring to life the individuals who acquired it, and illustrate the physical context in which it was used. Organized by the New-York Historical Society from its world-class collection of silver, Stories in Sterling highlights that city as an important producer and consumer of silver objects. Linked to significant moments
in the history of New York and the United States, the remarkable objects in the exhibition range from domestic family heirlooms to acknowledged touchstones in the evolution of American silversmithing. The diversity of stories speak to themes that include individual accomplishment, family pride, silver consumption patterns, technological progress and innovation, rituals of presentation, and the commemoration of great events in peace and war.

Mackay (1831-1902) for his wife, Marie Louise Hungerford Mackay (1843-1928).

Originally purchased by New York’s Gouverneur Morris during his time in France as the United States minister, this late eighteenthcentury coffeepot was sold to Robert R. Livingston, a fellow Francophile and a successor as minister to France.
Owned by New York merchant Robert Lenox (1759-1839), this stately tankard is among the few tankards made after the Revolutionary War, and one of the only known Neoclassical New York examples extant.
Stories in Sterling is organized in six sections: • “Converging Cultures in Colonial New York” explores how immigrant silversmiths, along with silver brought by émigrés from their native countries, influenced New York’s vibrant craft community. Highlights include the silver seal of Peter Stuyvesant and pieces made by New York’s first Jewish silversmith, Myer Myers. • “From Craft to Industry” examines the shifts in practices—from the small shop tradition to partial outsourcing of work, and finally to industrialized production, including silver plating—that characterized the development of American silver between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. • “Honoring Achievement” explores the time-honored tradition of awarding accomplishments with the presentation of a silver object through some of the most spectacular pieces in the exhibition. • “Rites of Passage” includes more private presentations, those that honor birth, marriage, death, or represent exchanges between individuals, such as funeral rings and spoons given to the mourners of the deceased. • “The Rituals of Tea and Coffee” explores the surging popularity of these beverages and reveals how ownership and proper usage of silver tea and coffee wares served as an index of social refinement.

Hawley (1869-1938) won this magnificent trophy, the Lahm Aeronautical Cup, for his record-breaking flight from St. Louis, Missouri to Chicoutimi County in Quebec. At a distance of 1,172.9 miles, the twoday flight was the longest balloon trip undertaken in United States history.
• “Elegant Dining” examines the changing etiquette of formal dining as silver became affordable to more and more Americans. Highlights include an extravagant Tiffany & Co. ice cream dish, one of two from the 1,250 piece service made for Marie Louise Mackay in 1877. Henry and Mary Lily Flagler and their peers were important consumers and collectors of silver during the Gilded Age. Works featured in Stories in Sterling
provide additional context for the significance of silver during the Gilded Age, including that owned by the Flaglers and on display in the historic rooms throughout Whitehall. Curated by Margaret K. Hofer, Curator of Decorative Arts, New-York Historical Society, with Debra Schmidt Bach, Associate Curator of Decorative Arts, the exhibition is accompanied by a 350 page, full color catalogue published in conjunction with D Giles Limited, London.
Experience World Class Chamber Music The Flagler name has long been associated with great music. Henry and Mary Lily Flagler frequently hosted musical performances in Whitehall’s elaborate Music Room furnished with a 1,249 pipe J.H. & C.S. Odell & Co. organ and a Steinway upright grand piano. Flagler’s son, Henry Harkness Flagler, was chairman of the New York Philharmonic Society. One of Flagler’s granddaughters, Jean Flagler Matthews, founded the Flagler Museum, restored Whitehall’s elaborate Odell organ and in 1969 brought the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, to South Florida for a Museum benefit concert. Another of Flagler’s granddaughters, Mary Flagler Cary, amassed a large collection of original music manuscripts now at the Morgan Library.
The association between the Flagler name and great music continues today in the form of the Flagler Museum Music Series, presenting chamber music, as it was intended, in a gracious and intimate setting. Regularly featured on National Public Radio, the Flagler Museum Music Series features acclaimed musicians performing music composed prior to 1930 in what critics have described as the finest chamber music venue in South Florida. Audience members are treated to a rare opportunity to meet performers during a champagne and dessert reception following each concert.
Shanghai Quartet January 7, 2014 7:30 p.m. Renowned for its passionate musicality and impressive technique, the Shanghai Quartet has become one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles. Its elegant style melds the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire. Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, the Shanghai Quartet has worked with the world’s most distinguished artists and regularly tours the major music centers of Europe, North America and Asia, from the Beijing International Music Festival to Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
Yoonie Han and the Gloriosa Trio January 21, 2014 7:30 p.m. South Korean pianist Yoonie Han is praised for her “flowing tones, poetic phrasing, and heavenly singing melodies” - Cincinnati Enquirer, and “her musical imagination and feel for complex textures drew vivid images” - Washington Post. She has won top prizes in distinguished international competitions and the highest accolades for her poetic performances in major concert halls in the U.S. and around the world. This concert will debut Ms. Han’s piano trio, the Gloriosa Trio, with Arnold Choi, one of the most celebrated cellists in North America, and violinist Jennifer Carsillo.
Cuarteto Latinoamericano February 4, 2014 7:30 p.m. Cuarteto Latinoamericano, formed in 1982, is known worldwide as the leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet. This Latin Grammy winning ensemble from Mexico consists of the three Bitrán brothers, violinists Saúl and Arón and cellist Alvaro, along with violist Javier Montiel. The Cuarteto has toured extensively around the world including performances in Europe and the Americas, Japan, China, New Zealand, and Israel. The Cuarteto was in residence at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh for two decades, from 1988 until 2008.
Atos Trio February 18, 2014 7:30 p.m. Founded in 2003 by violinist Annette von Hehn, cellist Stefan Heinemeyer and pianist Thomas Hoppe, the Atos Trio strives to convey the spirit of string quartet playing to the piano trio realm. Never shying from extremes, the ensemble aims to push limits when it comes to sound and dynamics and is known for its honesty of interpretation. The Atos Trio has performed hundreds of concerts and appeared at prestigious festivals such as the SchleswigHolstein Music Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, Festspiele Schwetzingen, the City of London Festival, Budapest Spring, and Enescu Festival (Bucharest). During the last season, the Atos Trio has performed at Wigmore Hall (London), Carnegie Hall (New York) and the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), all to capacity audiences and critical acclaim.
Talich Quartet March 4, 2014 7:30 p.m. For several decades, the Talich Quartet has been recognized internationally as one of Europe’s finest chamber ensembles, and as the embodiment of the great Czech musical tradition. The Talich Quartet is regularly invited to prestigious chamber music festivals such as the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades, Prague Spring Music Festival, Europalia Festival, Printemps des Arts in Monte Carlo, Tibor Varga Festival of Music, and the International String Quartet Festival in Ottawa; and frequently plays in such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall. The Talich’s recordings of the complete string quartets by Felix Mendelssohn, released on the Calliope label between 2001 and 2004, have been widely praised. Other recording projects include, Dvorak’s “American” quartet and viola quintet (2003), Smetana’s two string quartets (2003), and a live recording of Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” and the Dvorák Quintet (2004). The Quartet’s Janácek recording was honored by Gramophone with a nomination for the best chamber recording of 2006—the only recording by a string quartet to be selected.

Gilded Age Ambience Restored To help re-create an authentic Gilded Age visitor experience at Whitehall, the Flagler Museum has recently restored a number of historical light fixtures. For the first time since the Museum opened, visitors can now see the interiors of Henry Flagler’s Railcar No. 91 by the light of its eleven original electric wall sconces, which have been repaired and rewired. Railcar No. 91 was built for Flagler in 1886 by the Jackson and Sharp Company of Wilmington, Delaware. Heralded as “a palace on wheels,” the car was appointed with many luxuries, including electrical power, running water, and oak paneling. During the process of restoration, the Museum staff also made an interesting discovery regarding the railcar’s sconces. Research on period railcars and careful visual examination revealed that the sconces
had been displayed for many decades upside-down, and incorrectly fitted with glass shades. The retrofitted shades have been removed and the sconces have been returned to their original positions, bulb-downward. Two Louis XVI bronze doré lamps displayed at opposite ends of Whitehall’s second-floor Green Hall have also been restored and lit for the first time in decades. Elaborate candle holders that were reconfigured as lamps long ago, the bronzes and their fancy silk shades had suffered from age-related deterioration. The lamps were rewired with period-appropriate silk cords and the shades were restored by a textile conservator, who preserved the original fringe and rebuilt the elaborately pleated shades with custom-dyed silk. The restored lamps add a special Gilded Age ambiance to Whitehall’s second floor.
Joseph Jefferson: Legendary Actor and Flagler Friend

One of the many prominent figures that fell in love with South Florida during the Gilded Age was Joseph Jefferson, a famous American actor and comedian who was also a close friend of Henry Flagler. Born into a theatrical family in 1829, Jefferson began his stage career as a baby and achieved critical success by the age of 20, while acting in New York. In 1859 Jefferson played Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle in Washington, DC, and he quickly became identified with the role. Rip Van Winkle, a short story originally published by Irving in 1819, was set in New York’s Catskill Mountains around the time of the American Revolution. The tale’s eponymous main character became Jefferson’s signature role. Jefferson played

Joseph Jefferson, an accomplished amateur painter, ca. 1904. Rip Van Winkle again for several seasons in Australia, and in 1865 he played 170 performances in the role in London, including a command performance for Queen Victoria. Jefferson also played the character in a series of short silent films in 1896. Due to the great popularity of Jefferson’s portrayal, many souvenir objects and photographs were produced bearing his likeness. The Flagler Museum has recently acquired a number of artifacts related to the actor, including a sterling silver souvenir spoon made by Howard Williamson & Sons, depicting Jefferson as Rip Van Winkle. In the bowl of the spoon is written: “Here’s your good health, and your family’s and may they all live long and prosper.” This quote was made famous by Jefferson as Van Winkle, who makes the toast while drinking schnapps, soon after falling asleep and waking up twenty years later. Jefferson continued playing Rip Van Winkle almost exclusively for four decades, mostly due to enormous
popular demand. According to actor Francis Wilson in Joseph Jefferson: Reminiscences of a Fellow Player, “He was Rip, and Rip was he.” The Flagler Museum has acquired a first, limited edition copy of this important volume, published in 1906 and signed by the author. The Museum has also added a first edition copy of the Autobiography of Joseph Jefferson to the Research Library, published in 1890 and signed by Jefferson. The Flagler Museum Archives has recently acquired several period photographs of Jefferson. An avid fisherman, Jefferson also became the face of Ashaway Brand fishing line. An interesting example of a “Joseph Jefferson” brand Ashaway line spool was also recently added to the Flagler Museum’s collections. Said to be the richest actor in America in the late nineteenth century, Jefferson owned winter homes in West Palm Beach and later Palm Beach, and chose to spend his retirement years here. It is clear that he spent a great deal of time with his friend Henry Flagler and was a frequent guest at Whitehall. Like Flagler, the actor was one of the first individuals to invest in the young city of West Palm Beach. Jefferson invested in the first public electric power plant in the city and also owned buildings on Clematis Street. Joseph Jefferson died in Palm Beach in 1905.
Museum Awarded Grants The Flagler Museum was recently awarded several generous grants that will significantly impact its ability to preserve and interpret its collections. The Mosaic Foundation (of R. & P. Heydon), the SmARTBiz Grant Program (a collaborative of PNC Bank and the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County), and The Fortin Foundation of Florida have all provided funding to support the Museum’s purchase of the specialized Bookeye 4V1A Professional Scanner. This high resolution machine can scan fragile books and documents from the Museum’s collections while safely holding them in place in a special cradle. The specialized scanner will allow the Museum to greatly enhance its collections research and interpretation capabilities while meeting professional collections care standards. Funding from The Fortin Foundation of Florida will also support the final phase of conservation and treatment for the

Additionally, the Museum has been awarded its third Preservation Assistance Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This grant will support collections care training for Curatorial Staff and storage improvement for the Flagler Museum’s film-based
archival material. The goal is to continue the process of preserving the Museum’s fragile film stock, making it more accessible for research and interpretation. These materials are highly significant both regionally and nationally as they cover some of the most important Gilded Age figures, events, and architecture.
CAPTURING THE CUP EXHIBITION RECEIVES REGIONAL AWARD The Flagler Museum was recently honored by the Southeastern Museums Conference, Capturing the Cup: Yacht Racing During the Gilded Age, the Museum’s Fall 2012 Exhibition, received a Certificate of Commendation from the 2013 SEMC CURCOM Exhibition Competition, which showcases the best in regional exhibition efforts. Criteria examined in selecting award winners included the exhibition’s ability to effectively meet the Museum’s mission; how the exhibition was conceived and researched; the quality of its design and fabrication; and the educational value provided in both the exhibition and related programming. This is the sixth SEMC Award the Flagler Museum has received during the past three years.

2014 Whitehall Lecture Series Examines Crimes of the Century The 29th Annual Whitehall Lecture Series will bring experts and bestselling authors to discuss the most sensational crimes of the Gilded Age. Capturing the public’s fascination, these crimes helped birth the modern age of a media infatuated on select celebrity trials
and the development of modern forensic techniques. All authors will be present for a book signing immediately following each lecture. Copies of the speaker’s book will be available for purchase.

A Gilded Age Murder and the Birth of Moving Pictures Edward Ball, Best-Selling Author & Yale Professor February 2, 2014 - 3:00 p.m. Eadweard Muybridge was known for his captivating images of the American west and invention of stop-motion photography and moving pictures. His partnership with railroad tycoon and former politician, Leland Stanford was forged in order to answer a popular debate concerning the physics of a trotting horse. Shortly after beginning the study with Stanford, Muybridge received word from his wife that challenged the paternity of their young son. An enraged Muybridge took action that would change the course of his life and lead to a trial which turned into a media sensation.
American Lightning
The Union Bombing of the Los Angeles Times Building Howard Blum, Pulitzer Prize Nominated Author & New York Times, Vanity Fair Contributor February 9, 2014 - 3:00 p.m. On an October morning in 1910, the Los Angeles Times Building was the focus of a bombing that demolished the building and blasted men and machines into the air. Touted as the “Crime of the Century,” the bombing of the Los Angeles Times Building caught the attention of America’s greatest detective, William J. Burns. Burns’ investigation led to the accusation of labor activists who could be traced to hundreds of similar bombings. The trial was one of the most compelling in American history.

A Story of Privilege and Murder by Poisoning in the Gilded Age Harold Schechter, Author & Queens College Professor February 16, 2014 - 3:00 p.m. This riveting exploration of a notorious, sensational New York City murder in the 1890s shines a light on the forensic science of the time period and the drama of tabloid-like media coverage at the turn of the century. Harry Cornish, popular athletic director of the Knickerbocker Athletic Club was the recipient of a poison-laced package of Bromo Seltzer. The contaminants of the package killed Cornish’s cousin and nearly killed Cornish, himself. What followed was a tumultuous legal proceeding that made history as the sensational details of trial were shared with the inquisitive masses.

The Shocking Story of America’s First Serial Killer Harold Schechter, Author & Queens College Professor February 23, 2014 - 3:00 p.m. This is the chilling true account of America’s first documented serial killer, H.H. Holmes. Set in the Gilded Age in what was described by detectives as a “Castle of Horrors,” Holmes lured his victims to his labyrinth of trapdoors, soundproof chambers and chutes and crematorium under the guise of running a boarding house in proximity to the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Holmes evaded suspicions by maintaining his status as doctor, druggist, inventor and entrepreneur. His partnership with railroad tycoon and former politician, Leland Stanford was forged in order to answer a popular debate concerning the physics of a trotting horse.
