The Flagler Museum is open year round, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Admission is $18 for adults, $10 for youth ages 13-17, $3 for children ages 6-12, and children under 6 are free. Admission is free for Members. Special rates are available for groups. Henry Flagler Harris Research Library Receives Specialized Scanner Through the generosity of several grant funders, the Flagler Museum recently added a specialized scanner to its Henry Flagler Harris Research Library. The Bookeye 4V1A scanner will be especially useful with oversize documents, delicate materials, and rare books, which are often very fragile and difficult to manipulate safely. Knowledge related to archival holdings will increase tremendously because the scanning process will render scans fully searchable. The Museum has already been able to use several related resources to enhance its Fall Exhibition, Kiss of the Oceans: The Meeting of the Atlantic and the Pacific. The Specialized Scanner made it possible to easily and safely access these resources so that thousands of exhibition visitors may learn from them. The purchase of the Bookeye scanner supports the goal of utilizing new technologies to serve the public. It reduces the amount of handling of fragile materials, helping the Museum to better meet professional collections care standards set by the American Alliance of Museums, making it possible for the Flagler Museum to maintain its 40-year history of accreditation and to be the recipient of major national recognition such
as the recently received Ross Merrill Award for the Outstanding Commitment to the Preservation and Care of Collections. In addition to fulfilling high quality conservation and preservation practices, the new scanner has improved staff efficiency, since it is much faster and can scan much larger documents than a normal desktop scanner. Its impact will extend beyond the Research Library, as it will be used to scan various materials as a record of marketing and publicity efforts as well as for use in grant proposals and funder reports, saving storage space and paper. Use of the specialized scanner will make the Research Library’s primary sources more accessible for use in developing exhibitions, interpretation, programs, and publications, increasing knowledge about Florida’s history and America’s Gilded Age. The Museum is most grateful to the grant funders who made this purchase possible - SmARTBiz (a collaborative of PNC Bank and the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County), The Mosaic Foundation (of R. & P. BOUGUEREAU’S ‘FANCIES’ ALLEGORICAL AND MYTHOLOGICAL WORKS BY THE FRENCH MASTER
Exhibition on view January 27 through April 19, 2015 French academic painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 - 1905) is widely admired for his delicate figure studies that capture even the most subtle human emotions. Immensely popular in both Europe and America during his lifetime, Bouguereau became one of the most prolific and influential artists of the nineteenth century, and is today widely recognized as one of the art world’s great painters. Bouguereau’s ‘Fancies’, organized by the Flagler Museum, will feature mythological and allegorical paintings and drawings spanning the artist’s entire career, as well as popular contemporary reproductions of his works in print, porcelain, marble, and bronze. Educated at the prestigious École des BeauxArts, Bouguereau quickly rose to a place of honor and leadership in the art world. He received numerous prizes for his work, including the Prix de Rome and the médaille de première classe at the French Salon, and held honors such as election to the Académie des Beaux-Arts de l’Institut de France, presidency of the Société des peintres, sculpteurs, architects et graveurs, and Grand Officier of the Légion d’honneur. Bouguereau was also an important teacher and supporter of younger artists.

Bouguereau was a man of his time, creating painterly expressions of Enlightenment thought. His works embody values such as equality, charity, and respect for the humanity and dignity of mankind. Some of his most popular works depict noble peasants, particularly young women and children. His paintings are more than just exacting figure studies however; Bouguereau sought to convey intense emotion and meaning through his figures.
Mythology and fantasy were also favorite subjects of Bouguereau – he referred to these works as his “fancies” – and he often populated his paintings with attractive nymphs, cupids, satyrs, and toga-clad men and women. The artist also often chose to elevate figure studies to allegorical works, which provided the opportunity to embody his audience’s aspirations or values in a single,

Lewis beautifully portrayed figure or group of figures. He revisited figural compositions depicting “charity,” for example, throughout his career. While mythological and allegorical subjects enhanced the appeal of his figures to the public, they also provided Bouguereau with endless opportunities to create beautifully painted and charming human figures. Bouguereau’s ‘Fancies’ will include nineteen superb examples of Bouguereau’s mythological and allegorical subjects, including a number of life-sized Salon paintings, plus related works. A highlight of the exhibition will be the display together, for the first time ever, of three versions of the artist’s Jeune fille se défendant contre l’Amour [Young Girl Defending Herself Against
Eros]. Created in 1880 for the annual French Salon, the full-sized version of this subject – a girl chastely resisting first love – was once owned by Henry Flagler and hung at Whitehall (now the Flagler Museum), and is currently in the collection of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The Salon version will be united in the exhibition with the artist’s reduction of the subject, once owned by Henry Flagler’s friend Henry Walters of Baltimore and lent by the J. Paul Getty Museum, as well as a chalk and gouache drawing of the same subject from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. This historic exhibition of all three versions will provide the opportunity to examine Bouguereau’s artistic process in detail.
reductions - for commercial reasons, to help meet the demand for his paintings and to facilitate the creation of engraved reproductions of his work. The monochromatic San Francisco drawing of Young Girl Defending Herself Against Eros, for example, was created for reproduction of the painting in black and white. Bouguereau’s work was enthusiastically sought by Europeans, but many of the artist’s most dedicated fans were in North America. Gilded Age American collectors of Bouguereau and their interest in French academic art will be highlighted in the exhibition. Henry Flagler, like many of his contemporaries, was an avid collector of French academic art. With the rise of Modernism at the close of the nineteenth century, however, Bouguereau’s reputation declined, along with that of the Academic tradition. Criticized with other realists as old-fashioned and sentimental, Bouguereau went from being a household name in his lifetime to being virtually forgotten after World War I. In recent decades, however, Bouguereau’s reputation has been rehabilitated, as tastes in art have changed and scholars and collectors again appreciate realist art. Bouguereau is again recognized as one of the great painters of the figure, exceptional in his ability to portray the human spirit.

While Bouguereau’s paintings were eagerly collected by the wealthy, new commercial reproduction methods provided more affordable versions, contributing to the artist’s popularity. Bouguereau’s paintings and drawings were quickly reproduced on plates, plaques, boxes, fabric, buttons, and as prints in books and folios. Bouguereau painted smaller copies of his large paintings – called

Experience World Class Chamber Music The Flagler name has long been associated with great music. Henry and Mary Lily Flagler frequently hosted musical performances in Whitehall’s elaborate Music Room furnished with a 1,249 pipe J.H. & C.S. Odell & Co. organ and a Steinway upright grand piano. Flagler’s son, Henry Harkness Flagler, was chairman of the New York Philharmonic Society. One of Flagler’s granddaughters, Jean Flagler Matthews, founded the Flagler Museum, restored Whitehall’s elaborate Odell organ and in 1969 brought the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, to South Florida for a Museum benefit concert. Another of Flagler’s granddaughters, Mary Flagler Cary, amassed a large collection of original music manuscripts now at the Morgan Library.
The association between the Flagler name and great music continues today in the form of the Flagler Museum Music Series, presenting chamber music, as it was intended, in a gracious and intimate setting. Regularly featured on National Public Radio, the Flagler Museum Music Series features acclaimed musicians performing music composed prior to 1930 in what critics have described as the finest chamber music venue in South Florida. Audience members are treated to a rare opportunity to meet performers during a champagne and dessert reception following each concert.
Parker Quartet January 6, 2015 7:30 p.m. Formed in 2002, the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet has rapidly distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation. The Quartet began touring on the international circuit after winning the Concert Artists Guild Competition as well as the Grand Prix and Mozart Prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in France. Chamber Music America awarded the Quartet the prestigious biennial Cleveland Quartet Award for the 2009 - 2011 seasons. Beginning in the fall of 2014 the Parker Quartet will join the faculty of Harvard University’s Department of Music as Blodgett Artistsin-Residence.
Aspen String Trio January 20, 2015 7:30 p.m. After twenty years of friendship and music-making, Aspen String Trio members David Perry, Victoria Chiang, and Michael Mermagen have joined together as an ensemble with magical synergy. These three world-class instrumentalists each have a long-time association as artist-faculty with the Aspen Music Festival; combined they have performed across the globe in the world’s most prestigious venues.
Calidore String Quartet February 3, 2015 7:30 p.m. Described as “a miracle of unified thought...” (La Presse, Montreal) and “nothing short of a revelation” (Calgary Herald) the Calidore String Quartet has established itself an international reputation for its informed, polished and captivating performances. The Calidore has already made debuts in such prestigious festivals as Verbier and Ravinia and the Schneider Concert Series (NYC) and is a featured “Young Artist-in-Residence” on American Public Media’s “Performance Today”.
Fine Arts Quartet February 17, 2015 7:30 p.m. The Fine Arts Quartet, “one of the gold-plated names in chamber music” (Washington Post), ranks among the most distinguished ensembles of our time, with an illustrious history of performing success and an extensive recording legacy. Founded in Chicago in 1946, and based at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1963, the Quartet is one of the elite few to have recorded and toured internationally for over half a century. Each season, violinists Ralph Evans and Efim Boico (who have been playing together nearly 30 years), interim violist Juan-Miguel Hernandez, and cellist Robert Cohen perform worldwide in such cities as New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Moscow, Tokyo, Beijing, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Mexico City, and Toronto.
Auryn Quartet March 3, 2014 7:30 p.m. An outstanding career spanning three decades has made the Auryn Quartet one of the most sought-after and respected ensembles performing around the globe. The members of the Quartet have not changed over this long period, and continues with its fresh and pioneering approach to all genres of music. The Quartet won its first prizes at the London International Competition and the ARD Munich competition, both in 1982, only one year after the group’s inception. The ensemble also won the main prize at the European Broadcasting Competition in Bratislava in 1989. Invitations to most international music festivals followed in quick succession: Lockenhaus, Salzburger Festspiele, Edinburgh International Festival, Musiktage Mondsee, Schwetzinger Festspiele, and Stavangar festivals just to name a few. Recent tours have taken the Quartet from the Lincoln Center in New York, to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and also to the Wigmore Hall in London, where they performed a complete cycle of the Beethoven quartets.

A Musicale in Marble
A music-themed sculpture, original to Whitehall’s Music Room, has recently been restored to its former beauty. Created by Italian sculptor Pietro Bazzanti (1825 – 1895), the sculpture depicts a grouping of five putti (or young boys) playing music. Bazzanti was considered one of the most talented sculptors of his day, and his studio was a popular stop for Grand Tour visitors to Florence. This figural group is typical of the skilled sculptural work available to tourists in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The sculpture, which is perfectly appropriate for the Music Room, was probably purchased by Henry and Mary Lily Flagler shortly after Whitehall was built. Photographs taken while the
Flaglers lived here show the sculpture on display near its current location at the west end of the room, on a custom-designed green marble pedestal. After Mary Lily’s death the sculpture stayed in the family, first in the possession of Mary Lily’s niece, Louise Clisby Wise, who inherited Whitehall, and later at the home of Mary Lily’s sister and Louise’s aunt, Sarah Graham Kenan. The sculpture returned to the Flagler Museum on loan in 1971, and is currently on loan to the Flagler Museum from the estate of James G. Kenan, Sarah’s nephew by marriage. Although it is in remarkable condition for its age, the sculpture was in need of a professional cleaning. A century of grime, soot, and wax were removed, revealing the marble’s brilliant white. The original green marble pedestal, which had been in pieces and unusable for more than forty years, was professionally restored and the figural group is once again on display as it appeared when the Flaglers lived at Whitehall, a visual and thematic complement to the Music Room.

George Washington and the Bals Poudré George Washington’s birthday was one of a few holidays celebrated during the Gilded Age. Washington, a beloved hero of the American Revolution, symbolized honor and virtue, and as such paintings and sculptures of our first President were found in living rooms and civic halls across the country. Declared a federal holiday by Congress in 1879, Washington’s Birthday was often occasion for grand parties in his honor. By the early twentieth century, hosting a George Washington’s Birthday ball became a popular tradition, and in Palm Beach the ball was considered the highlight of the social “Season.” One style of ball held in honor of Washington was the Bal Poudré, or “powdered wig ball.” Powdered Wig Balls were popular in America and England during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
In England, for example, the Countess of Warwick loved to host Bals Poudré (Whitehall’s Breakfast Room ceiling is a copy of the State Dining Room at Warwick Castle). In America, Bals Poudré became an interesting fusion of America’s fascination with Marie Antoinette (Whitehall’s Drawing Room is an homage to Marie Antoinette) and its hero-worship of George and Martha Washington. While some guests wore costumes, they were free to appear in ordinary evening dress, but with powdered wigs, after eighteenth-century fashion. Ladies often wore their hair arranged on their heads in the style of Marie Antoinette, along with fake beauty marks on their faces. The first Bal Poudré in Palm Beach was hosted at Whitehall by Mary Lily and Henry Flagler on March 3, 1903. More than three hundred guests
attended, and it was described by national newspapers as “one of the most sumptuous social affairs ever attempted south of Washington.” The house and grounds were decorated with special floral decorations and the rose garden, rose arbor, lake wall, and shrubbery were illuminated with hundreds of miniature electric lights in colored globes. Party favors included miniature cherry trees and umbrellas of red, white, and blue for women, and silver hatchets and sashes of red, white, and blue for men. The Flaglers also distributed brooches, gold cuff buttons, gold scarf pins, sunflower pin cushions, miniature loving cups, and various other trinkets as souvenirs. From the first Bal Poudré at Whitehall sprang the tradition of hosting the extraordinary number of galas held each year in Palm Beach, which raise much-needed funds for an impressive number of worthy causes. As Bals Poudré in Palm Beach became more elaborate and the guest lists grew, the Hotel Royal Poinciana – which could accommodate thousands – began hosting them. On February 11, 1907, Whitehall’s resident organist Arthur Spalding described the scene at the Hotel Royal Poinciana: “The 5:10 train has also just arrived and brought the biggest crowd I have yet seen on any train. The [hotel] office is crammed with dress-suit cases, wraps and umbrellas, and there is a long line at the desk waiting for an opportunity to register.

That is the very height of the season and there is always a big ball that evening in the Poinciana dining-room.”

The Flagler Museum holds in its collection a number of items related to both the Bal Poudré at Whitehall and the George Washington’s Birthday balls held at the Hotel Royal Poinciana, including invitations, contemporary news articles, photographs, and letters. The Flagler Museum’s Whitehall Society will host a Bal Poudré at the Flagler Museum on Saturday, February 21, 2015. Proceeds will benefit the Museum’s educational programs for children.
2015 Whitehall Lecture Series Examines Monuments of the Gilded Age The 30th Annual Whitehall Lecture Series, Monumental America: Gilded Age Monuments That Illustrate the American Character, will explore the most powerful representations of the American Character, symbolizing the conscience, spirit, mind, and body of America. Most lecturers will be present for a book signing immediately following each lecture. Copies of the speaker’s book will be available for purchase. The Impetus Behind the Building of America’s Monuments by Judith Dupré, Best-selling Author February 8, 2015 - 3:00 p.m. The monumental architecture and the success of the Columbian Exposition inspired congress to finish the nation’s Capitol. A critical feature of that process was the conceptualization and construction of a series of monuments for which the aesthetic concept, artist and medium mattered as much as the subject matter itself. Judith Dupre, author of a book titled Monuments: America’s History In Art and Memory, will discuss the cultural context and significance of America’s best-known monuments.
The Washington Monument, the Capitol Dome, and the Jefferson Memorial Thomas Luebke, Secretary of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts February 15, 2015 - 3:00 p.m. The Washington Monument, an obelisk that soars to meet the sky and the Capitol Dome painting of George Washington’s ascension to Heaven, surrounded by 13 angels representing the original 13 colonies, clearly cast George Washington as the embodiment of the spirit of America. The Jefferson Memorial memorializes the man who wrote the American Declaration of Independence and more than any other person, represents the intellect and enlightenment that formed the basis of America’s grand experiment in self governance.

Mount Rushmore Dr. David Wolff, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Professor of History at Black Hills March 8, 2015 Memorialized for eternity, the faces of the four Presidents, who collectively represent the major aspects of the American Character, were literally carved from the side of a mountain, making Mount Rushmore the most enduring and impressive monument to the four aspects or tributes of the American Character.
