Modern Skirts PULASKI STREET STAGE Friday, June 25, 9 p.m. FREE Formed in 2004, Modern Skirts is an indie-pop band that pairs vocal harmonies with quirky lyrics and modern piano with rock instrumentation. Modern Skirts emerged from the Athens, GA music scene with its debut album, Catalogue of Generous Men, which was met with critical praise and national recognition, landing on Paste magazine’s “Best of 2005” list. Energetic live shows and plenty of onstage charisma helped the band to gain popularity and sell out the legendary 40 Watt Club several times. The group also makes regular appearances at Chapel Hill’s Cat’s Cradle and New York City’s Mercury Lounge. Modern Skirts also traveled to the UK for a second time on a two-week tour and opened for hometown heroes R.E.M. in Amsterdam. The Skirts’ sophomore album, All of Us in Our Night, has songs that are both infectiously catchy and immediately relatable. Their latest EP, Happy 81, is set for digital release on July 6. Limited-edition CDR copies wil be for sale at the AthFest show!

Packway Handle Band PULASKI STREET STAGE Friday, June 25, 9:20 p.m. FREE Formed in 2001, during a “peculiar spell” in which there were five or six bluegrass bands competing with the usual indie/rock/punk scene of Athens, Packway Handle Band emerged at the forefront simply by doing what it does best: playing an energetic blend of bluegrass and Americana with its own flair and sense of humor. Packway Handle Band found national acclaim soon after its inception, winning the Telluride Bluegrass competition in both 2002 and 2003 and taking second place in 2004. The band’s debut album, Chaff Harvest, was produced with money won from a local Battle of the Bands. The group’s eclectic style of alt-bluegrass continues to win over a plethora of listeners, including bluegrass traditionalists and those who never listen to bluegrass—hence Packway’s reputation as the bluegrass band for people who don’t like bluegrass music. Packway’s latest release, What Are We Gonna Do Now?, continues in the tradition of creative and witty songwriting, opening with “Walking Disaster,” in which one vocalist sings: “I’m an accident that stopped waiting to happen.” The band utilizes its many talented vocalists with tight, three- and four-part vocal harmonies around two adjacent condenser mics. Although Packway uses the banjo, fiddle and mandolin in its songs, this isn’t your traditional bluegrass band.

Bubba Sparxxx epitomizes the victory of a rapper moving out of the Dirty South and into the land of stardom. Raised in the backwoods of a rural country town 65 miles southwest of Atlanta, Sparxxx was a sheltered youth but was soon turned on to rap through a neighbor’s mixtapes. With early influences including ‘90s West Coast gangsta rap such as Eazy-E and N.W.A. and pioneers of Georgia hip-hop such as Outkast and Goodie Mob, Sparxxx quickly began writing rhymes that sparked an interest with industry professionals, from So So Def to Interscope Records. His biggest hits include “Ms. New Booty,” featuring The Ying Yang Twins, “Back in the Mud,” which was used as ESPN’s “College Gameday” theme song, “Ugly” with Timbaland, and Archie Eversole’s “We Ready,” which was popularized at sports events. In addition to his music career, Sparxxx has participated in a number of television productions, including a guest performance on MTV’s “My Super Sweet Sixteen,” a mentoring role on MTV’s “Celebrity Rap Superstar” and a collaboration with the “Girls Gone Wild” team detailing the life of a rap star. Performing a short opening set for Bubba Sparxxx will be Athens’ own Valentine & West, featuring the upbeat rhymes of Tommy Valentine and the sweet, pop-oriented melodies of songstress Laura West.

Kinchafoonee Cowboys LUMPKIN STREET STAGE Sunday, June 27, 7:20 p.m. FREE The Kinchafoonee Cowboys adopted their name from the Kinchafoonee Creek, a tributary of the Flint River flowing through Lee County and Albany, the area in which the members grew up and still reside. Soon after coming together in 1991, the band’s popularity rose in Athens as several members attended college in town. In fact, the group’s debut record, Sowega, was recorded here in Athens at the Saturn Recording Studio. Bandmembers Chris Scarborough, Glen Tennyson, Chad McGrath, Keith Comartie, Jason Fuller and Shane Cannon each contribute a unique quality to the band’s overall sound. Rather than playing tears-in- beers songs, the band prefers to perform foot-stomping classic country tunes, sure to make listeners dance. The Kinchafoonee Cowboys have a strong history in Athens and every release seems to strengthen the bond between them and the Classic City. Need proof? Flagpole Athens Music Awards THE MORTON THEATRE 195 West Washington St. Thursday, June 24, 8 p.m. (doors open 7:30 p.m.) Tickets: $4 w/AthFest wristband, $7 advance, $9 door without wristband

Jim Diffly

Kicking off AthFest’s weekend of live music for the 12th year in a row is the Flagpole Athens Music Awards. Back in April, Flagpole magazine, Athens’ alternative newsweekly, put together a crack team of local music aficionados—including journalists, promoters and venues owners—to come up with their nominees across 18 different genres and categories to honor the best in Athens music. As always, the nomination process proved to be both challenging and rewarding as the judges poured over the impressive output and accomplishments from hundreds of Athens acts, from country crooners to punk rockers. Once the top five were selected in each category, Flagpole turned the voting over to its readers. After weeks of anticipation, the ballots have all been counted, and on Thursday it will finally be time to announce the winners. Also up for grabs will be the award for best music video, which can be voted on during the AthFest FilmFest screening on Wednesday at Ciné. But the awards are only part of the fun. Every year Flagpole digs down deep into the scene and pulls out a variety of incredible and often underappreciated talent to perform live. Kicking off the night will be Athens (the band), whose members may not be old enough to vote but are certainly old enough to rock your face off.

Looking to their classic-rock elders for inspiration, Athens shreds through some high-energy power chords, taking cues from acts like AC/DC. Hip-hop powerhouse Elite tha Showstoppa, whose new band, Showtime, is up for Rap Group of the Year, will perform a solo set. Elite is notorious Athens for his commanding live show, and Athens has been blessed to have him back in action so quickly after he suffered a heart attack last November. There is literally nothing that could keep this man from the stage, and his electric energy is inspiring. And while it might seem unconventional to throw a cover band into the mix, Los Meesfits are anything but a conventional cover band. In a premise that could only be concocted in Athens, the band takes The Misfits’ songs and transforms them into Spanish-language salsa numbers. You’ll never see anything else like it. Also on the bill are two polar opposite Upstart contenders. Reptar is possibly the most buzzworthy band of the moment, and the group is proving to be worthy of the hype, blending the angular electro-pop of Talking Heads with the reverb-drenched psychedelic sounds of bands like Animal Collective. The band’s ravenous fanbase has a reputation all its own, and Reptar’s shows are notoriously

exuberant, smeared with glitter and face paint. On Thursday the band will perform a special strippeddown set as a trio. On the more organic side of things, the globetrotting sounds of A PostWar Drama split the difference between rootsy Americana and Eastern European balladry, underscoring each song with accordion and violin. With three vocalists, these Upstart nominees offer a new melodic texture with every song, not to mention harmonies that could melt your heart. And finally, rounding out the list of performing bands is experimentalband nominee Circulatory System, whose triumphant comeback record, Signal Morning, is also nominated for Record of the Year. Gretsch Guitar Auction AthFest AfterSchool, AthFest InSchool and Keys for Kids programs are all funded in part by the donation of Gretsch guitars that are signed by prominent musicians and then auctioned on eBay. Gretsch, based in Savannah, GA, has a foundation which donates guitars decorated by artists or signed by musicians that are then sold to raise funds for music and arts education programs. Because Gretsch CEO Fred Gretsch believes in “enriching lives through participation in music,” the Gretsch Foundation has generously donated another new hollow-body Brian Setzer model Gretsch Nashville guitar to AthFest to sell as a fundraiser for our music education programs. Over the past two years, Gretsch has donated guitars that have been signed by the members of R.E.M., Widespread Panic and the Drive-By Truckers, and auctioned on eBay during the festival. This year’s Gretsch guitar has been signed by all of the members of Atlanta-based, countrysuperstar band Sugarland and comes complete with a new deluxe case. It

will be sold on eBay to the highest bidder beginning on June 23, 2010 and ending on June 30, 2010. For more information on this auction, please contact Jeff Montgomery at auction@athfest.com.

Gretsch’s Nashville model guitar was first built in 1954 in collaboration with Chet Atkins and has been offered in many deluxe versions over the years. Information on this and other guitar models is available at www.gretschguitars.com. Current prices on Gretsch Brian Setzer Nashville models start at $4,100. Gretsch recently celebrated its 125th anniversary as a guitar maker. AthFest salutes Gretsch on this milestone, and thanks them and Sugarland for their support.

AthFest Education After more than a decade of successful festivals, AthFest, Inc. decided to pursue its mission of music and arts education through outreach efforts in local schools and after-school programs. Through these programs, called AthFest InSchool and AthFest AfterSchool, students are exposed to various genres of music and are able to experience live music and interact with professional musicians. The outreach efforts began in the spring and summer of 2009 with a partnership between AthFest and the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services. Musicians performed for students who attended after-school programs in community centers around Athens. Those efforts soon expanded into local middle and elementary school after-school programs in Clarke County and at Putnam County Middle School. The 2009–2010 school year brought about an expansion of programming with even more performances in elementary after-school programs and additional performances during lunch at elementary schools. Jim Diffly

Eleven elementary schools participated in the AthFest AfterSchool program this year. AthFest AfterSchool musicians meet for about an hour with fourth- and fifth-grade students who attend their school’s after-school program. Group size is limited to enable a more interactive experience for both the students and the musician, with most of the groups containing between 10–20 students. The musicians often bring multiple instruments, play music acoustically and interact with the students in-between songs, sharing information about themselves, their instruments, music genre and song inspiration. Students participate by keeping rhythm, singing and sometimes trying out instruments. There has also been collaboration between musicians and students to write lyrics and create music. One musician describes his experience: “We did a little improvisational songwriting ‘workshop’ and ended up with a tune about a monkey chasing a high-bounce ball through the mall while avoiding screaming kids and security officers. They were completely into it!”

AthFest InSchool began in the 2009–2010 school year and takes place during the school lunch period, which lasts anywhere from two to three hours. Students get to experience live music as they file into the lunchroom, eat and file out. Musicians (solo or group) expose students to a variety of music, from rock and soul to country and hip-hop, as they perform during the entire lunch period. A unique aspect to this program is the chance for students to experience a follow-up lesson by the musician. Teachers can choose to have the performer return to the school in the week following the initial show for a more interactive activity during their lunch period. One class who did this collaborated with the returning musician on writing a song about Eleanor Roosevelt. The InSchool program is currently in place in Clarke and Oglethorpe Counties. AthFest InSchool and AthFest AfterSchool have both started expanding into surrounding counties. Oglethorpe County Primary School participated in the InSchool program in the spring, and the Oconee County Recreation Department middle school after-school program participated in the AfterSchool program. The AfterSchool program also runs in the summer time, meeting with middle school students in the Oconee Recreation Department’s Teen Extreme Camp and also with students in the YWCO summer girls’ program. Other types of programming being considered include having musicians work with a consistent group of students incorporating music with other elements, and using music as a motivator for students to improve performance in academic subjects. Plans also include expanding programming into middle schools. The AthFest educational programs are free to the schools and camps that participate. AthFest compensates the musicians for their time and provides any necessary equipment for the performances. AthFest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which raises funds for its educational programs via the AthFest festival in June, the half marathon (whose inaugural event will be Oct. 24), multiple grants including the Grassroots Arts Program Grant and the Athens Area Community Foundation, and the auctioning of guitars donated by the Gretsch Foundation and signed by R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Sugarland and Drive-By Truckers. Musicians interested in participating in the AthFest educational programs and volunteers interested in connecting local musicians to local schools can contact Jennifer Kumnick at education@ athfest.com.

AthFest 2010 AthFest Goes Green AthFest is very proud to announce that we are getting “greener!” There are several green initiatives this year, including working even closer with the Athens-Clarke County Recycling Division to reduce the AthFest “wasteline.” Last year, the ACC Recycling Division collected 1,440 pounds of bottles and cans and 540 pounds of cardboard and mixed paper from AthFest. This year, AthFest organizers want to capture ALL recyclables and will be collecting ALL compost-able materials for the first time. All food scraps and bio-degradable cups, cutlery and containers will be composted. AthFest attendees should look for the ACC Recycling Division Waste-Free Service Stations for all of their recycling and composting needs. AthFest has also required all 2010 vendors to use either recycled or compost-able containers this year. Another example of a greener festival is that the cups used in both Beer Gardens are made out of corn and are compost-able. These cups have been generously provided to the festival by Leon Farmer and Company, the local Budweiser and Yuengling distributor. The cases for the AthFest CDs that are for sale in the merchandise booth are made from potatoes, and the CD download cards are made entirely of recycled plastic. And last but not least, we have cut the number of diesel generators used this year in half by upgrading existing land power distribution boxes. That means we have a more efficient power supply without the smoke, noise and heat created by generators. AthFest will continue to make the festival greener in the future with the assistance of partners like Leon Farmer and the ACC Recycling Division, and as green technology improves.

Compilation CD

Every year since 1998, AthFest has worked with local company Ghostmeat Records to produce a compilation showcasing the amazing musicians who call Athens home. The AthFest 2010 compilation features 16 bands representing a fine cross-section of high-energy rock, quirky pop, soulful Americana, jam rock and more. Highlights include music from The Whigs, Packway Handle Band, William Tonks, The Orkids, Timber and Modern Skirts. The album is available from select stores, www.athfest. com, www.ghostmeat.com and worldwide via iTunes. It is also available at the AthFest merchandise booth during the festival. Special thanks go to the AthFest 2010 CD sponsors: Flagpole, Magic 102.1 FM, Chase Park Transduction and Oasis Disc Manufacturing. Proceeds from sales benefit AthFest, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to music and arts education.

Now in its ninth year, Wired is a showcase of local and regional talent currently active in the electronic music scene. While the annual AthFest celebrations traditionally highlight established and upcoming bands, Wired was conceived as a vehicle for DJs and producers to push their respective genres to the forefront with no artistic restrictions. Between the 20 acts scheduled to appear this year on two stages, nearly all beat-based dance genres will be represented, from experimental hiphop to electro-house music, dubstep to drum and bass. Athens is no stranger to the “late-night dance party” phenomenon, but Wired is the only largescale event of its kind to reach out to festival goers

with a day component; the opening acts are scheduled to go on at 4 p.m., with a different act appearing every hour until the closing time of 2 a.m. The outside area will be covered in case of adverse weather. Activities at the venue will include video game consoles and live painting by local artists. As always, there will be re-entry to the event, allowing patrons to venture downtown to take part in other AthFest activities. The event also features live video mixing by Integrated Visions.
