AthFest is striving to “green” the gig by reducing its environmental footprint. This year the festival has partnered with Athens-Clarke County Recycling Division and will supply Waste Reduction Stations collecting all recyclables and compostables.

Last year ACC Recycling diverted approximately 1,320 lbs. of bottles and cans and 700 lbs. of cardboard from the landfill. This year, we hope to capture ALL recyclables and compostables.

All food scraps, biodegradable cups, plates and napkins will be collected along with cardboard, paper and plastics #1 and #2. To

reduce the amount of landfillbound materials, we are working with vendors to provide only recyclable and compostable containers and utensils. The AthFest Beer Gardens will feature recyclable cups sponsored by Leon Farmer and Company. Be on the lookout for the Waste Reduction Stations located throughout downtown, making recycling and composting easy and accessible.

This year AthFest also upgraded power sources near the festival in order to eliminate the need for diesel-powered generators. This will reduce both noise and air pollution on the festival site.

PETS: Pets are discouraged from attending AthFest due to the crowds, children, hot surfaces and lack of suitable areas for them. If you bring a pet, please dispose of its waste properly. All pets must be leashed.

PARKING: Municipal Parking is available in four downtown parking decks (entrances on College Ave., Hancock Ave. Washington St., and beside the Classic Center on Thomas St.) and at street-side metered parking. Times for fee collections and fees vary. Meters are free on Sundays. Prestige Parking operates private lots close to the stages, artists and vendors. Daily parking: $5. WRISTBAND INFO Wristbands provide free access to all venues participating in the Club Crawl on Friday and Saturday nights.

(Subject to age and capacity restrictions.) Wristbands also include discounted admission to the Wired Dance Music Festival, LaughFest Comedy Showcase, the 2012 Flagpole Athens Music Awards Show, Sprockets Film Festival and Ciné AthFest films. Wristbands are not required for activities in the AthFest Outdoor Stages area. Wristbands are $20 in advance through Thursday, June 21 and $20 on Friday and Saturday and at club entrances. Wristbands are available online through the AthFest website (www.athfest.com) or in person at the Athens Welcome Center (280 E. Dougherty St.), Ciné (234 W. Hancock Ave.), Low Yo Yo Stuff (261 W. This year’s show features live performances by Motown legend Ike Stubblefield, of Montreal violinist Kishi Bashi, singer-songwriter nominee The Viking Progress, hotly tipped up-and-comers Grass Giraffes, Appalachian jazz duo Cicada Rhythm, kid-friendly rock band Like Totally! and many surprise presenters and special guests! Atlas Sound is the moniker of Deerhunter frontman/provocateur Bradford Cox, so named since 1994, when as a sixth-grader he made recordings on a karaoke cassette machine bearing the words “Atlas Sound.”

Though Atlas Sound was Cox’s earliest musical incarnation, it wasn’t until 2008 that the first Atlas Sound album, Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel, emerged. The genesis of the record can be traced back to those sixth-grade musical experiments: a time when he discovered through reading a Beck interview that his family’s disused karaoke machine could be used as a rudimentary multi-tracking device.

As Cox’s tirelessly updated blog attests, with its caverns of freely available covers, demos and mixtapes, such recording processes are central to his music, coloring the intimate feel of Atlas Sound in a manner more apparent than when writing under the guise of Deerhunter.

Citing the “ideas that I can’t make work with a five-piece rock band” as the basis of his solo material, Cox’s work as Atlas Sound represents a feral and prolific musical voice. With its scorched beauty, stream-ofconsciousness flow and wonderfully cohesive pop narrative, Atlas Sound is another outlet for Cox’s relentless creativity.

With their newly released full-length, Body Faucet, Reptar has shown a tremendous amount of sonic growth. Their sound is deeper and more lush, yet the reckless abandon of their live sets remains intact.

There are five boys who make up Reptar. They have offered twice as many (if not more) explanations for why they chose to name their band after a “Rugrats” character. But these days, the Athens, GA group is sticking to this one: “I first tried to name the band Invisible Boyfriend,” giggles singer-guitarist Graham Ulicny. “And everybody goes, ‘That is the stupidest name I have ever heard in my life.’” So, why Reptar? “It is the second stupidest band name we have ever heard.”

Indeed, there is no pretense behind Reptar, which also includes Andrew McFarland (drums), Ryan Engelberger (bass), William Kennedy (analog keyboards) and Jace Bartet (guitar, dancing). Still, the ability to amuse and arouse their fans is just as important to them as indulging their musical curiosities. This sonic wanderlust extends from African music to post-punk to psych-pop and converges joyously in songs such as “Blastoff” and “Rainbounce.” It’s a winning mix that’s won the band accolades from NPR, New Musical Express and another international publications.

FREE If there’s a dark heart to Athens, GA, then The Glands, with their sly, mysterious and sardonic tunes, have found it. Athens has long been known as a disproportionately hip college town, and its signature sounds have been obliquely jangly (as in R.E.M.) or radiantly goofy (as in The B-52s).

The Glands are a late-night alternative to all that. Put together by guitarist/singer/songwriter Ross Shapiro and drummer Joe Rowe, the results are beyond geography, really. Shapiro and Rowe have been a part of the Athens scene since Pylon’s ‘80s pop to Olivia Tremor Control’s ‘90s lo-fi rock, but the pair and their loose collective of musical friends could have been toiling in London or on the Lower East Side.

While college kids slept and the bars were shuttered, Shapiro and Rowe drew in ideas and influences like a radio receiver picking up distant stations during the quiet middle of the night. Call it the sound of being sleepless in Athens. Since 1998, they have released just two albums: Double Thriller and 2000’s eponymous LP. Shows are sporadic, but adoration for the reclusive Athens act has been undeniable. Their second album has been called “the best secret album of the 1990s” and “a criminally underrated masterpiece.”

FREE The Yacht Rock Revue is the “Greatest Show on Surf” and the finest tribute to ‘70s light rock to ever be performed anywhere. Ever. Their spot-on renditions of Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan and the rest of the Time-Life infomercial catalog have enthralled fans across the United States. Supercluster is itself a super-group of sorts, a loose confederacy that has included members of New Sound of Numbers, Pylon, Casper and the Cookies, The Olivia Tremor Control and more. Fresh off a very successful set at Twilight Criterium 2012, Athens’ finest B-52s cover band is locked and loaded for a breakout performance at the gleaming Georgia Theatre. Josh McKay plays guitar in The B-53s and will lead Abandon the Earth Mission through a set of atmospheric experimentations featuring hammered dulcimer and electronics. Opening act The New Sound of Numbers is an experimental, post-punk band here in town that concocts an arresting blend of swirling harmonies and sharp rhythm work. Supporting The Producers on Friday are Kick the Robot, an Athens/Atlanta-based young power-pop trio, driven by great songwriting and outstanding vocal harmonies. Bramblett released his third solo album, See Through Me, in 1997, two decades after his solo release.

During that 20-year period, Bramblett was a member of the Southern jazz-fusion group Sea Level and a touring member of the reunited Traffic, as well as a busy studio musician. He was born in Jesup, GA, and his sound is heavily influenced by R&B music, gospel, blues and folk. Also performing tonight is the Charlie Garrett Band, featuring Charlie Garrett on vocals/guitar, Jay Rodgers on vocals/bass, Scott Nicholson on piano/ guitar/vocals and Joe Ellison on drums. The Athens, GA Half Marathon On Oct. 20 & 21, 2012, AthFest Inc. will host its third annual Athens, GA Half Marathon, now simply known as the AthHalf. Since 2010, AthFest Inc. has held these half marathons as fundraisers for the organization’s educational programs. This year’s AthHalf boasts a revamped, flatter, faster course with fewer hills and a race finish unlike any other. For UGA Bulldog fans, running around the hedges of Sanford Stadium may seem like a dream, but AthHalf 2012 makes this dream a reality with an exciting victory lap around the famous hedges and a fun-filled finish complete with local music in the Tate Center parking lot of the University of Georgia.

Race weekend will begin with AthHalf’s Health and Fitness Expo at the

Classic Center on Saturday, Oct. 20, from noon until 6 p.m. The Expo is FREE and open to the public, and it will feature exhibits and demonstrations from AthHalf sponsors and vendors. This event will also be the location for runner registration and packet pick-up for participants.

The race itself begins Sunday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 a.m., and the 13.1-mile course will take runners through downtown Athens to historic Cobbham, through Sorority Row to Memorial Park Zoo, with a memorable finish around the hedges.

Registration for AthHalf is $60 before June 30 and $70 starting July 1st.

AthFest Educates!

In 2008, AthFest Inc. formed the AthFest Education Committee, now known as AthFest Educates!, with the goal of sharing Athens’ rich musical talent, knowledge and expertise with students in the Athens area. AthFest Educates! was created to not only educate but to inspire students at the elementary and middle school levels. AthFest Educates! also provides instruments for children in need and has musicians perform for students who attend afterschool programs in community centers around Athens. These outreach efforts began in the spring and summer of 2009 with a partnership between AthFest and Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services.

Over the years, AthFest Educates! has expanded and refined its programming. There are currently two open application periods each year, during which teachers have the opportunity to apply for school-wide lunchtime performances, mini-grants, artist-in-residence programs and grade-level performances.

This year AthFest Educates! was able to support many exciting projects in the Clarke County School District. Mini-grants were provided to various schools to support the purchase of instruments, sets for plays, drumming programs and a mural art project. Area musicians have performed for students during lunch, shared their drumming

expertise during after-school programs and taught music history to fifth graders.

At David C. Barrow Elementary School, Shannon Sausser has partnered with teacher Leigh Rogers to support their DRUMCorp. Because of DRUMCorp, students have not only improved their drumming skills but have also experienced an increased sense of belonging at school and improved selfconfidence, which has led to marked behavioral and academic improvements. Look for them to perform Saturday on the KidsFest stage!

AthFest Educates! continues to be a proud supporter of the UGA String Project and has purchased almost 30 violins, violas and cellos, which are being maintained as a lending library by the program. Participants in the UGA String Project include 2nd to 5th graders as well as college students who are earning credits toward their Orchestra Education degrees. Come by the KidsFest stage on Saturday to cheer them on!

This year, AthFest Educates! is sponsoring the second annual Rock Star Photo Booth during AthFest. This will take place in the theatre room at Flicker Theatre & Bar. All children are invited to participate in hair styling and costuming. Parents will then have the opportunity to photograph their children on a rock stage set.

DJ Mahogany will be playing a kids’ dance music set in Flicker during Rock Star Photo Booth on Saturday from 1–3 p.m. as well.

AthFest Educates! volunteers will be available to provide additional information about our programs and donations will be accepted happily.

AthFest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which raises funds for its educational programs via the AthFest festival in June, the AthHalf marathon, AthFeast and grants from organizations like the Athens Area Community Foundation. In recent years, funds have also been generated through the auctioning of guitars donated by the Gretsch Foundation, which have been signed

by R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Sugarland, Drive-By Truckers, The B-52s and, this year, The Downtown 13. The AthFest educational programs are free to the schools and camps that participate. AthFest 2012 ¡Phone App Compilation CD Every year since 1998, AthFest has worked with local company Ghostmeat Records to produce a compilation showcasing the amazing musicians who call Athens, GA home.

The AthFest 2012 compilation features a wide range of local talent, from the supergroup Patterson Hood & The Downtown 13, to young buzz band Reptar.

Other highlights include beloved local staples like folk group Hope for Agoldensummer, electronic-pop band pacificUV and Southern rockers Futurebirds. The album also offers a survey of fresh, young talent such as Tumbleweed Stampede, Ruby

Sean VanMeter: Sean is a classically trained pianist from Jefferson, GA. He is 13 years old and has been studying piano under the guidance of recording artist Lee Davis for seven years. Sean has performed on many stages around the world, making his debut tour of Italy at age 11. Sean attends Georgia Connections Academy, a virtual school, which allows him to juggle school work and his many performances. Bands from Nuçi’s Space’s Camp Amped: Camp Amped is a summer music day camp at Nuçi’s Space for young musicians in middle and high school.

The film opens with the burning of the historic theater in summer 2009, and chronologically covers the history of the Athens music scene from the 1970s through the present.
