‘I’ve Got to Mow My Lawn’ Republicans Decide It’s Safer to Stay Away from Cleveland By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com You can understand why people are reluctant to attend the Republican national convention in Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena this week. This is a dangerous time to be in an urban environment. Every time you turn on a TV, it seems, you’re inundated with images of police shootings or terrorist bombings or attempted coups by the military. On top of all that, Republicans are holding their convention in Ohio, which is an open-carry state. There are several white nationalist groups in Cleveland to show their support for Trump and just as many or more groups of anti-Trump protesters. All of them can legally carry assault weapons on the streets of the host city, which leaves one with the unpleasant thought of bullets flying as the roll call of the states is held officially to confirm the presidential nominee. Small wonder, then, that dozens of senators, congressmen and former presidents decided they would skip all the fun by staying away from their own convention. Nebraska senator Ben Sasse, who definitely is not a Trump fan, sent word through his spokesman: “Sen. Sasse will not be attending the convention and will instead take his kids to watch some dumpster fires across the state, all of which enjoy more popularity than the current frontrunners.” Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake had the most pragmatic reason for not attending the convention: “I’ve got to mow my lawn.” None of the Bushes are there and neither are the two most recent GOP presidential nominees, Mitt Romney and Arizona Sen. John McCain. Georgia’s representatives in Washington weren’t nearly that squeamish about attending. U.S. House members like Buddy
Carter and Tom Price showed up, as did Georgia’s two senators, Johnny Isakson and David Perdue. Perdue is not only going to Cleveland, he is one of the few elected officials who doesn’t look with dread towards the November election. He’s been predicting for a while that Trump will prevail over Democrat Hillary Clinton. “I know an outsider when I see one— someone who is listening to us,” said Perdue during the recent state GOP convention. “He’s complaining about the very people we complain about—politicians, bureaucrats, the media.” State Sen. Bill Cowsert (R-Athens) waxed philosophical about the road trip: “Cleveland, Ohio, is famous for corned beef sandwiches, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the 2016 Republican National Convention,” he said. “This week, I’m proud to say I’ll get to enjoy all three.” Cowsert is also being a good sport about the decision of Republican primary voters, a choice that does not sit well with many of the party’s establishment figures. “The Republican voters have had their say, and we chose Donald Trump as our nominee,” Cowsert said. “As a Republican, as a Georgian and as an American who respects our electoral system, I will represent the people who are sending me to the convention, and I will cast my ballot for Donald Trump.” It’s hard to say that anything of substance ever happens at a national convention, but they’re still an important ritual of the presidential election season. You can think of them as infomercials for American democracy. I’m watching the proceedings on TV as I always do. However, I’m doing it at a safe distance from Cleveland. f

Serving the Underserved ALCES Needs Funding to Continue Helping Athens Latinos By Louise Platter news@flagpole.com
In
2010, the Athens Latino Center for Education and Services opened its doors with the mission of serving an underserved community. From language courses to GED classes, ALCES seeks to meet the needs of the Latino community in Athens. “Essentially what we are trying to do is help the underserved Latino population and help them establish themselves, put down roots, build better lives and become a better integrated part of the community, A LCES Executive Director Susan Wilson says. For years, ALCES has striven to accomplish this goal through a myriad of services. According to a thenslatinocenter.org, the nonprofit’s website, it o ffers a variety of adult education classes, including English as a second language, Spanish language, GED preparation in Spanish and English and citizenship classes, as well as help with applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, bilingual counseling and translation and interpretation services. The courses are offered for a $50 monthly fee and are typically small in size. “This is to help fulfill our ultimate vision of a community with a thriving cultural and economic life where everybody, regardless of their age or back-
Shivar, who plan to move to Nicaragua in July, have used ALCES to build up their knowledge of the language. “We come twice a week for basically three hours. It’s been a great place for me to learn language and culture, David Shivar says. “The folks here have just been very professional and helped us to reach our goals. Our class is very structured, but sensitive to the things that we need. It’s been very instrumental. Despite the positive student reviews, ALCES is facing financial hardship that may force it to close its doors by the end of this year. In an attempt to combat this, ALCES is accepting donations at bit.ly/savealces and has several upcoming fundraisers. Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt at the Beechwood shopping center had a percentage night last month to benefit ALCES. The Five Points location of Barberitos will donate a percentage of profits July 20, and the downtown Ben & Jerry’s will do the same Aug. 11. ALCES also is looking for volunteers to help provide its services. “There are dozens of ways to help, Wilson says. “Almost anything someone’s interested in doing, from teaching to childcare to administration, is something that we would be able to use a volunteer in.

For Adela Rosales, ALCES has provided her with the chance to continue her education. “Since I was young I’ve wanted to continue my studies, but I didn’t have the money to do so in Mexico,â€? Rosales says. â€?I heard the teacher teach with such passion that my desire to study reÂawakened. She inspired me to study.â€? Rosales took four GED preparation courses at ALCES and was able to graduate this year. Now Rosales takes classes at ALCES to improve her English. Her experience with the center has been transformative. “There are people here that say, ‘I can’t study anymore.’ But then people realize that they actually can, and that they have the opportunity to do so,â€? Rosales says. “For example, some say that we can’t study anymore because we don’t speak English. It’s only when they realize that there are classes in Spanish that they get excited to study.â€? In addition to English classes, ALCES also offers courses to those who want to learn Spanish. Beverly and David
Wilson hopes to overcome the financial shortfalls to continue serving the Latino community in Athens. “The students that are coming here are extremely driven. We have people who have to work around their work schedule, and they do it,â€? Wilson says. “They’re here, some of them, at nine o’clock on a Sunday morning. Others are coming in for English classes after working since six or seven in the morning. We’ve got some really driven folks, and those are the folks that we want to help.â€? For ALCES board member Alejandra Calva, the services ALCES provides help to fulfill a serious need in Athens’ Latino community. “I really notice how much need there is in the community. Even for us it’s hard ÂÂgetting your cable installed, getting your prescription, a nd we speak perfectly good English. Our barriers are so limited, whereas for this community it’s really hard to find someone who speaks spanish at the pharmacy, for example,â€? Calva says. “That’s part of ALCES’ mission. It’s really about educating the larger community about the needs of [the Latino] community. It would be a very sad day if we had to close.â€? f

SlopFest’s Founder Predicts This Year’s Six Sloppiest Sets By Gabe Vodicka music@flagpole.com
S
tarted in 2009 as a last-minute replacement for the canceled Athens PopFest, SlopFest has become one of the essential items on the Athens music calendar, an always-thrilling mix of punk, metal and heavy rock with a few random flavors thrown in for good measure. In a sense, the event is townie paradise—a delirious, debauched, fourday festival that only costs $8 for the whole shebang. To sweeten the deal, all proceeds benefit Girls Rock Athens. Thursday through Saturday, the action takes place at Little Kings Shuffle Club downtown; Hi-Lo Lounge in Normaltown hosts Sunday’s finale. Though there will certainly be no shortage of mayhem over the course of this long weekend, we invited organizer Derek Wiggs—also a member of Shehehe, which plays Sunday—to predict SlopFest 2016’s six sloppiest sets. The full lineup can be found in this week’s Calendar and at flagpole.com.
LiNda (Thursday, time TBA) WIGGS SAYS: “Unhinged party-punk delivered in a very Tony Clifton-esque manner.” WE SAY: The relatively new five-piece blends ’80s hardcore with ’90s college-rock—the Germs’ unbridled ferocity meets Pavement’s winking scorn. Frontman Samuel Gribbon seems barely there, yet he is the band’s secret weapon, his narcotized vocals masking ultra-clever lyrics and a dexterous delivery.
The TRespasser (Friday, 7 p.m.) WIGGS SAYS: “Opening on Friday night is the highly

prolific songwriter Derek Lord, from Atlanta. This will be only his second live show despite the massive amount of material he creates. [He’s got a] wry wit and slightly goofy sincerity.” WE SAY: He’s new(s) to us… but cripes, dude’s Bandcamp page is loaded. A quick perusal of said page reveals a laidback, lo-fi alley-folk vibe with a touch of dystopic-city daydreaming. Like if Beck’s early recordings had a love child with Arthur Russell.
The Rodney Kings (Friday, 10:30 p.m.) WIGGS SAYS: “Everybody should have had the pleasure to cut loose and get rowdy at one of their shows by now. This being their farewell show, I’m sure it will be a dust-up.” WE SAY: It’s tough to say goodbye to one of Athens punk’s most essential bands of the past few years, but we’re also positive the Kings will go out in trademark dirty, dangerous style. Please, for your sake, wear earplugs.
TwiNKi (Friday, 12:30 a.m.) WIGGS SAYS: “Drag-rap from Jacksonville, FL. Incredible and indescribable almost. Especially after the madness The Fuzzlers stir up shortly beforehand. Just don’t fuck with her wig.” WE SAY: Twinki has made Athens her second home over the past few months and has quickly amassed a group of local loyalists in the process. Her “raunchy sexxxcore” is brash, subversive and amazingly fun live. See what all the fuss is about Friday.
HayRide (Saturday, 12:30 a.m.) WIGGS SAYS: “The classic Athens band will be jumping on to finish us all off after the combined madness of Savagist, Vincas, The Powder Room and Motherfucker. Not sure what they have up their sleeve, but those guys can play every song in the world. All of them.” WE SAY: These guys have been doing their thing since way back in 1991, which means their band has survived grunge, nu-metal and EDM—and somehow, the music sounds as vital as ever. Like Five Eight, we’re lucky Hayride is still around to remind us of the simple power of well-executed rock and roll.
DeEp STAte (Sunday, 11 p.m.) WIGGS SAYS: “The official ‘you don’t have to go home, but can’t stay here’ band of SlopFest. Sending everybody off with a highly energetic and slightly sticky way.” WE SAY: Deep State’s powder keg of a punk show straddles the line between drunken bedlam and stone-faced certainty. The musicianship of these four fellas is off the charts, which is why it’s so fun to watch them descend into chaos. f

Happy Happy Birthday, HHBTM
NIGHTLY
Plus, More Music News and Gossip By Gordon Lamb threatsandpromises@flagpole.com HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY INDEED: Hats off this week goes to Athens label HHBTM Records on the occasion of its 17th year of continuous operation. Beginning humbly in 1999 as a one-off compilation included with the final issue of owner Mike Turner’s zine, The Bees Knees, the positive reaction was such that Turner decided to keep going. Of course, the record industry occupies a much different landscape today, and Turner’s dedication to keeping his own course, his deft sense of when to be frugal and when to splurge, and just doing the work have all helped HHBTM thrive through fat and lean years. Although there’s probably a sense of internal pride after having released more than 180 records, there’s also the fact that this paragraph is getting too long and Turner’s probably already embarrassed by it. Sorry, Mike, and congratulations. For more information, see hhbtm.com and facebook.com/HHBTM. SHOW ME THE MONEY: Applications are open now for the fall 2016 grant season from AthFest Educates. Anyone from school teachers to nonprofit organizations to local and state governments may apply, and priority is given to applications highlighting music and arts-based programs. Typically, funds are used for musical equipment and experiential instruction for students, but there is no requirement that applicants be music or arts instructors. Applicants are encouraged to incorporate these disciplines into any area of education. The deadline to apply is Aug. 19, and awards will be announced Sept. 19. For more information, see athfesteducates.com or write to director@athfesteducates.com. KEEP ON ROCKIN’ ME BABY: There’s a new cassette version of the nine-song record This Isn’t a Sun from guitar-’n’-melodydriven local band Linda. Honestly, that’s the best way to describe the group, because the normal go-to points of “poppunk, “Superchunk-ish but kinda more Replacements-y and “house-party-core seem too conversational and obvious, even though they’re all true. Linda is the latest among a new breed of bands influenced by early ‘90s college rock (before it was called “alternative) and operating where digital practicality meets workmanlike aesthetics and a sense of purpose. The whole thing was recorded in a single day back in March at The Glow Recording Studio. The tape comes courtesy of Loud Baby Sound, and you can stream it at lindaband.bandcamp. com. Keep up with Linda at facebook.com/
lindascones420, and check local record stores for copies of the tape. LOST IN SPACE: A couple tracks were recently made available without fanfare or hype from hip hop collective Space Dungeon and member Lingua Franca. Under the Space Dungeon moniker comes “That Whole Thing Is Heat, credited to rapper Lex Callahan and producer WesdaRuler. It’s an easy-flowing beat, but the vocals definitely provide a slightly agitated vibe. It’s all very reminiscent of the generally genreless but constantly pigeonholed intelligent underground New York hip hop scene in the early-to-mid 1990s. Check it out at soundcloud.com/spacedungeon, and stay in tune with the collective at facebook.com/spacedungeon. Next up is “Gold Bike from Lingua Franca, which actually came out back in February. It’s a tight groove of a track with jazzy punctuations, head-noddin’ horn samples and Lingua Franca’s superbly steady and soulful vocals. Listen in at soundcloud. com/linguaafrancaa, and be a fan at facebook.com/ liiinguafranca. In other news, Lingua Franca will perform as part of the “Boom-Bap and Backpacks show Friday, July 29 at Live Wire. Other featured performers include Emissary 89, Last Trip, Blacknerdninja, Son1, Scott Sutton and DJ Luke Highwalker. SECRET COMPARTMENT DEPARTMENT: Falling solidly into the “rumors category are the recent rumblings concerning a revived social media presence of Kindercore Records. The label began in 1996, thrived until 2001, changed its aesthetic course from pure pop for now people to a more aggressive rock and post-punk stance, went dormant and flirted with a brief digital revival circa 2007. Since then there have been only dribs and drabs with regard to releases. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the label’s start, and it has been posting tons of archival photos at facebook. com/kindercorerecords and on Instagram at kindercorerecords. Curiously, @kindercore on Twitter remains trapped in a time warp from a few years ago, and kindercorerecords.blogspot.com is in the same position. Both are fine, though, for catching up on stuff you might have missed. (Full disclosure: I have twice been employed by Kindercore, but haven’t been involved in any way for over nine years.) In the interest of journalism, I made the proper inquiries concerning these new developments and was advised that news is forthcoming. So, for now, enjoy the pictures. f

out their case well, and people responded. HAND PIES UP: One of the nicest things about the West Broad Farmers Market is its Now they’re at the market pretty much every week, and taking orders through location next to the urban farm that takes Athens Locally Grown and their own webup a lot of the property. Walking between site (hankiepie.com). rows of tomatoes or next to a small blueberry patch, or investigating the chickens who live in a fenced area at the edge of the space, one sees the open sky above and feels transported, even serene. The fact that it has a considerable number of food vendors as well as picnic tables means you can enjoy a lunch or a brunch or a snack while experiencing that same environment. Abrahim’s Parlor, which makes Trinidadian doubles (sort of chickpea sandwiches on a puffy, poori-like bread) and other delicious food, is still there. Independent Baking Co. usually sets up a table to sell croissants, pain au chocolate, other viennoiserie and bread. Rashe’s Cuisine might be selling Jamaican food, and Soul Food With a Twist might be offering its wares. Dipped And Frosted will tempt your children (or you!) with cake pops and candy apples in unusual flavors, and Mama Bird’s often has tamales Diablo’s Southwest Grill and healthy muffins. There are Hankie Pie does both full-sized and cookies and samples of fresh fruit in seahand pies, both sweet and savory, in flason, and an older Hispanic couple retails vors including chocolate pecan; peach; tinga, fresh tortillas and a wonderful black peach blueberry; spinach, artichoke and bean dip accented with crema. feta; lemon chess; turkey, egg and cheddar; One of the newest vendors is Hankie swiss chard, mushroom, onion and feta; Pie, a cute-as-a-button business run by blackberry; smoked salmon with spinach; Madeline and Margie Siggelkow, sisters strawberry and cream; apple brie; strawfrom the Midwest who moved to Georgia berry rhubarb; and chocolate bourbon with a dream and funded their business pecan. Among the full-sized pies, some through a Kickstarter campaign. They laid
have latticed tops, while others have crumb toppings. The results are a bit mixed, although it’s possible some of that is due to the heat at the market, which may do a number on a delicate creation like pie. The full-sized lemon chess I had, in Hankie Pie’s early weeks at the market, seemed under-baked, with a filling that was a bit too dense and a crust that was overly chewy. I’ve had better experiences with the smaller, savory pies, which have a drier filling that may work better with the crust. The spinach, artichoke and feta, in particular, is a fine small breakfast or a snack. The peach blueberry
hand-pies, too, are not too sweet or goopy, with a good burst of fruit when you bite in that doesn’t drip all over the place. I wish I could recommend the stand unreservedly. The Siggelkows are friendly and sweet, and they are doing things in the right way. They also might be improving; Georgia (spoiler alert) has a significantly different climate from Minnesota, and bakers can learn to adjust for that kind of

thing. Hand-pies run $3 each; full-sized pies are more like $16–$20. Hankie Pie also has cold-brew coffee and lemonade. FRESH-MEX: Does the world need another chain of BYO-burrito restaurants? Diablo’s Southwest Grill (1791 Oconee Connector, 706-543-3399), which opened recently in Epps Bridge Centre is exactly such: menu on the wall, approach the counter to order, pick your toppings and accessories, get your free chips when you pay, and take your food to a table or booth. The food is not dramatically different from anywhere else, with elements that resemble the choices at Barberitos, Moe’s, Chipotle and Willy’s, all of which also exist in Athens. There are vegetarian options and meatatarian options, things for carbo-phobes and carb-lovers. The cilantrolime rice takes a page right out of Chipotle’s book. The food is fine, although not particularly exciting, more fuel for a day of participating in commerce than gourmet destination. How does it differ from those places? Primarily decor. With a saddle used as a stool by the door (labeled “best seat in the house” in vinyl letters on the wall) and a giant set of horns protruding from the wall above the food-preparation counter, as though a monster bull was trying to force its way into the space, it’s fairly Texas in its attitude. Nothing seems to get cooked to order, but flames are a design motif nonetheless. Some of its innovations are decent. Most booths include a free charging station for your device, with a plethora of connectors snaking out from the wall. And the requisite salsa bar provides its tiny plastic ramekins pre-packaged, with lids, which may be a greater waste of plastic but also means you aren’t stuck waiting behind someone slowly ladling a dollop of this and a squirt of that. Diablo’s is open for lunch and dinner every day, does catering and doesn’t serve booze. f

E6 Portrait Raises Funds for Nuçi’s Space Plus, Three Creative Businesses Head to New Locations By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com Elephant 6: Dozens of familiar faces from the Elephant 6 collective can be found condensed into a single 2-by-2 -foot frame through a new painting by Jon Rundstrom. Photorealistic depictions of members from seminal bands including Circulatory System, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Music Tapes, Elf Power, of Montreal, The Apples in Stereo and The Gerbils float together in a collage of expressions. The painter, who works primarily as a mural and portrait artist in Connecticut, has been following the Athens-based music collective since 1999. “My brother Eric first introduced me to E6. We would sit in the basement of the house we owned together, turn off all of the lights and listen to [Olivia Tremor Control’s] Dusk at Cubist Castle,â€? says Rundstrom. “Just staring at glowin-the-dark stars scattered around the basement ceiling, we were whisked away. I never looked back. I needed to know more about this thing called ‘Elephant 6.’ It was a lot tougher back then. We had just got dial-up AOL internet—no Facebook or social media. Passion drove the mission.â€? The portrait project began last December when Brandon Cole, admin for the “Elephant 6 Enthusiastsâ€? Facebook group, approached Rundstrom about creating a “lyrical referenceâ€? design that could incorporate the favorite lines of members into one illustration. The artist painted a small portrait honoring late musician Bill Doss into one corner, which led to adding core members Will Cullen Hart, Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider into the others, which suddenly snowballed into filling in the faces of 60 (and counting) musicians and artists who have contributed to the collective. The portraits were painted using photographs as reference, which gave the artist a platform to directly Jon Rundstrom connect with many of the musicians he’s been listening to for so long. “I have created amazing friendships with people who have been my heroes for years,â€? he says. “Such an amazing group of human beings. Sort of strange when your heroes are personified.â€? Rundstrom intends to complete the portrait by the end of summer, at which point T-shirts and prints will be made
with proceeds benefiting Nuçi’s Space. Join the “Elephant 6 Enthusiastsâ€? group on Facebook for updates. Community: For the past six years, local business owner Sanni Baumgärtner has drawn attention to the value and beauty of sustainable fashion through her boutique Community, quietly nestled above the downtown Jittery
Joe’s at the corner of Broad and Jackson streets. As of this month, the shop can now be found in its more visible, street-level location at 260 N. Jackson St., which previously served as the home of Jackson Street Books for over 30 years. Among a wide variety of locally-made accessories and gifts, you’ll find clothing created using vintage or
sustainable fabrics from the shop’s own line, Community Service—designed by Baumgärtner and sewn in-house by employees—alongside pieces by other designers, including Untitled Thoughts and Tabitha Fielteau. A secondary focus of Community is to serve as a training ground for aspiring designers, offering classes in sewing, fashion illustration, modeling and presenting a collection. Keep an eye on shop communityathens.com for future fashion shows. Pixel & Ink: Following nearly a year of operating out of the Chase Park warehouses, Pixel & Ink Studio (a slight rebrand from Pixel & Ink Photo Boutique) will move into Margot Ecke’s Smokey Road Press in the Leathers Building on Pulaski Street this weekend. In addition to photo restoration, film processing and printing services, Pixel & Ink currently offers over 200 purchasable prints by local artists through athensartprints. com. Sharing the new space will allow the shop’s abilities to expand into including additional products such as high-end wedding invitations, business cards, art books and other collaborations with Ecke, whose own business specializes in letterpress, binding and design. Amelia Johnson will join current co-owners Carolyn Crist and Laulea Taylor as a third partner, focusing on textile and surface design services, and the team hopes to offer in-house fabric printing for custom dresses and drapes next season. Pixel & Ink will host a grand reopening party around its first anniversary, which falls on Wednesday, Aug. 17. Visit pixelandinkphoto.com for more information. Indie South: Renovations are currently underway for Indie South Fair’s new brick-and-mortar headquarters, housed in the former location of Double Dutch Press at 1377 Prince Ave. in Normaltown. For the past decade, founder Serra Ferguson has been at the helm of the DIY movement by spearheading the largest open-air artist markets in town, as well as several smaller-scale events throughout the year. Indie South is currently in the process of expanding into a regional operation by organizing markets in multiple cities across the Southeast. The physical headquarters will operate primarily as a boutique space for handmade items and vintage goods contributed by a handful of vendors, and will also offer workshops and consulting services to help artists fine tune their businesses. A grand opening will be held Saturday, Aug. 20. For a taste of what’s to come, check out the Midsummer’s Night Market on Friday, July 22 from 5–10 p.m. at Creature Comforts. Sunday’s installment on Habersham Drive will be their seventh so far, and marks Krakin Jokes’ one-year anniversary. Check out the group’s Facebook page for lineup information and more details. I Got Passed Over, And I’m Pissed Advice for Athens’ Loose and Lovelorn By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Hi Bonita, I was recently passed over for a promotion at work, and it’s driving me insane! I started this job on the entry level and worked my way up to a leadership position over the years, and I’ve always let it be known that I was interested in a management position at the company. As soon as we found out one of the managers was leaving, we all began clamoring to be the one to take her place. I always try to go above and beyond at work, but when this position opened I really kicked it into high gear. I put in long hours and took on responsibilities that weren’t mine in order to show that I have what it takes to be in this top position. But then I came in to work a few weeks ago and we had a new manager! Not only that, but it was a stranger who moved here to take the job! I realize now that they never even posted the job listing, or at least they didn’t do it anywhere I would have seen it. Suddenly there’s just this new person run-

Unless you already have something new lined up, don’t rock the boat too hard. You don’t wanna storm into the owner’s office and demand to know why you were passed over, and you certainly don’t wanna alienate your new manager right off the bat. You’re right, it’s not her fault that the top brass at your company are dickheads, and she is probably plenty capable of doing the work that’s required of them. The real jerks here are the guys at the top, and I agree that they stink for not promoting from within. No one wants to professionally tread water for years, and promoting from within is a great way to keep good talent where you want it. Then again, they might have had good reason to bring in this new person. She might have an exceptional work history or abilities and knowledge that makes her perfect to manage a particular aspect of the company. And you should

ning the show, and none of the staff have any idea where she came from. We’re all pretty baffled and irritated by this, because we all wanted to get a shot at this promotion. It’s especially insulting that they didn’t promote from within, and it makes us all wonder if the company has any respect for us working stiffs. I work really hard, and so does everyone else at this company, and it’s just not fair. I’m really bothered by this and considering finding a new job. Why stick around if I don’t have any chance for advancement? I want to be on a career path, but I feel like a placeholder here, and I hate to even look at my new manager. It’s not her fault that any of this happened, but I can’t be chummy with someone who probably thinks she’s better than me. Got any pointers? Because I’m tired of dreading going to work every morning. Sincerely, 9 to 5: The Musical Dolly, I wanna encourage you to tread lightly here. This is your job—your bread and butter—and as much as we wish we could live on our hopes and dreams, we can’t.
make no assumptions about what she thinks of you. This is why it’s only fair that you go easy on your new coworker, because I know she wouldn’t have chosen to move to a new city only to be hated by the first people she contacts. As far as the brass goes, I think you’re right to wonder why they didn’t promote from within. Be careful asking around about that, though, because Georgia is a right-towork state, and you can be fired for pretty much anything. Remember, the only thing worse than having a job is looking for one, so don’t be disrespectful or unprofessional. I don’t blame you for wanting a job that offers advancement. If you decide to leave your current gig, don’t let anyone know you’re planning to. Like I said, you can be fired for basically anything around here. Ask a former coworker or manager to be your reference for your current job, since anyone who still works there could rat you out and get you fired before you’re ready to leave. f Need advice?
