This Guide is truly brought to you by the staff of Flagpole magazine. Publisher and Advertising Director Alicia Nickles managed the overall effort and spent countless hours proofing and re-proofing the information, as did advertising reps Anita Aubrey, Jessica Mangum and Carey McLaughlin, who also sold all the ads. Office Manager Stephanie Rivers researched information and entered it into the Guide computer program. Production Director Larry Tenner designed and laid out the whole Guide and made the maps; ad and web designer Kelly Hart constructed all the ads, and she oversees the Guide online. Arts Editor Jessica Smith wrote the art section and also directs Guide distribution, along with driver/manager Charles Greenleaf; News Editor Blake Aued compiled the front section facts about Athens, and Managing Editor/Music Editor Gabe Vodicka wrote the music info and edited and proofed the whole Guide—several times. Food writer Hillary Brown reviewed all the restaurants, and writer Kat Koury checked the bars, while theater writer Dina Canup did her thing and kids writer Kristen Morales lent her expertise. We only went outside our staff for the great photography that livens the Guide. Matt Hardy exercised his considerable skills with the camera, abetted by our superhero models Derek Adams, Scarlett Alston, Juli Bierwirth, Megan Dunn and Samone Pittman.
10.
Local businesses you need to know are highlighted through their advertising, which also makes the Flagpole Guide to Athens possible. Think of this Guide as a partnership between Flagpole and some of the coolest businesses in town. f

What Color Will Georgia Be? Demographic Changes Mean Georgia Could Be a Battleground By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com After the conventions, the Clinton and Trump campaigns were quickly shifting into high gear. Before all of the balloons in Philadelphia had been picked up, Donald Trump supporters were already chanting, “Lock her up, lock her up, at a campaign event. Meanwhile, the Hillary Clinton campaign was embarking on a bus tour of the key states Pennsylvania and Ohio. The question we’ve heard so much in recent years is again being raised: Is this the year when Georgia makes the transition from red to purple and becomes a battleground state? The answer to that question since 1992 has been no. That was the year Bill Clinton became the last Democratic presidential candidate to take Georgia’s electoral votes. Democrats are expecting things to be a little more competitive this year and kept making that point throughout their convention. State Sen. Jason Carter opened his introduction of his grandfather, Jimmy Carter, with these words: “Greetings from the battleground state of Georgia! Several recent polls suggest that the race between Trump and Clinton is close enough that the state really could be considered a tossup. Republican pollster Mark Rountree noted that “Georgia has a larger minority vote than almost anywhere else. As with California, Texas and Florida, Georgia’s population is becoming more diverse because of a growing black population and a steady influx of Asian and Latino residents. It was not long ago that Georgia’s pool of registered voters was more than 80 percent white; today, it’s barely above 58 percent and keeps dropping. The state’s percentage of white voters declines by about one percentage point each year, while the percentage of non-white voters increases by one point. “Georgia demographics continue to
change, Rountree said. “But so many GOP activists are blind to this and simply assume that since the GOP has run things here for a decade that they are a lock to continue to do so. No. Voter registration statistics and poll numbers are indications that a state could be more competitive, but not a guarantee. The real marker of a state that has attained “battleground status is that both of the presidential nominees are battling for it. When Trump and his aides met with GOP congressmen in Washington prior to the national convention, they said the Trump campaign would be targeting a total of 17 states this fall. The remaining 33 states were considered to be either so Republican in their political leanings or so Democratic that there was no point in devoting campaign resources to them. One of the states on Trump’s list was Georgia. After going Republican in five consecutive presidential elections, with a state government tightly controlled by Republicans, you would think a GOP candidate could safely assume Georgia would be in the red column again. The fact that it’s on Trump’s list tells us that his campaign is concerned about the state’s growing diversity, or has seen polling numbers that show it really could be up for grabs. Otherwise, why spend a penny of scarce campaign money here when there are so many other competitive states? Hillary Clinton’s campaign, on the other hand, has not yet committed to the possibility that Georgia could be in play. If that were the case, it would be dispatching campaign operatives here and opening up field offices to work on get-out-the-vote efforts. Since you can’t have a battle unless there are two sides to fight it out, Georgia is still not quite a battleground state. Perhaps that will change in a few weeks. f

The group has hired the urban design and redevelopment planning firm Lord Aeck Sargent to do a “feasibility study” for a future master plan. “We historically have done a lot of neighborhood planning, so we’ve worked in a lot of intown neighborhoods that have very similar character and assets like you have here,” project manager Robert Begle said. The study is broken up into three phases that Begle said will take around two months each. The first phase will involve taking stock of the existing features of the neighborhood. “We would go tour all of these facilities. We want to put our eyes and our feet and our hands on all of those. We want to see how they interact and see how all these things connect,” Begle said. Next, the firm will generate a series of options for the redevelopment of West Broad. “We’ll start to look at scenarios. Like, ‘Here’s what it would look like if you tore something down; here’s what it would look like if you renovated it,’” Begle said. “So we would sort of work up some of these scenarios.” The final phase will result in an implementation plan. “Then we start to work on the implementation mechanisms. How does that get funded? How does it organizationally work? How do we engage the broader community?” Begle said. Begle and his team plan to meet with what they have identified as the five stakeholders—the West Broad community, CCSD, AHA, ACC and ALT—during and at the completion of each phase. “We also want to have some forums where anybody from the neighborhood can come and weigh in on this,” Begle said. This feasibility study is only the first step of the process for West Broad redevelopment, Begle said. “I do want to be clear: Doing some planning work does not necessarily mean you get to the end of the planning and then start building something. There’s a whole other thing that happens there with funding and stakeholders,” he said. Although this study is not a master plan, it hopes to narrow down the pool of possibilities. “A lot of times you think of feasibility like, ‘Can we even build this?’ But to me, it’s more about what’s realistically feasible that is adding something to the area,” Begle said. “This is more about, here’s the world of possibilities, which of these makes the most sense and adds to the bigger story [of the community]?” [Louise Platter]

difficult work,” Williamson says. “You’re working 14-hour days and taking home a very small paycheck, and it was dangerous. You’re working in close quarters with a lot of machines.” Southern Cotton Oil Co. bought the building from the Athens Cotton Oil Co. in
year, Southern Cotton Oil was rebuilding the mill. This time, the buildings were made of brick. After 1922, however, the building was vacated. World War I and the boll weevil took a toll on the industry. Southern Cotton Oil “had gone from being very prominent to disappearing in a very short period of time. You see this collapse of the industry,” Williamson says. “From 1900–1920, you have this phenomenal growth in the industry, but like any other industry, you can build up and build up and then have it come crashing down.” Since the closure of the Athens branch of Southern Cotton Oil, the old mill has been very quiet. over 100 years, what was once one of many Southern Cotton Oil Co. mills has stood on Pulaski Street. Since 1922, the building has been largely silent, until now. Developers plan to put in a community market in a preservation project that aims to protect the history of the space. According to Keyes Williamson, a historical architect hired by developers Karl Barnett and Todd Burton, the location of the incoming development began as a cotton-oil mill. With the advent of the cotton gin in 1793, cotton production in the South increased exponentially, as did the number of cotton seeds left over as an unusable byproduct. This was the case until David Wesson pioneered a way to process oil extracted from the seeds in the late 1800s. “There were companies that realized you could take the cotton seed, and you could squeeze it, and you could not just produce an oil, but also take what’s left over and turn it into a third product, be that fertilizer or livestock feed,” Williamson says. “So they were shipping out oil, but they’re also selling locally this fertilizer to people.” Generally, the working conditions in factories like the one on Pulaski Street were not ideal. Workers put in long hours for little pay. “In general, the workforce for this type of facility would be predominantly or exclusively African American. It would have been extremely low-paying, extremely
could do there and what they are doing there, we are very happy,” Bierema says. “There’s always some concern, but knowing something is going in there, I think it’s the best we could hope for.” Ebell agrees and expects that the development will have a positive impact on the neighborhood. “We really feel good about the fact that the architect lives in the neighborhood and is sensitive to the development being something that is not only profit-making but serves the community and the neighborhood,” Ebell says. “I think the owners share that vision of wanting something cool and interesting.” From a historic preservation standpoint, Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation Executive Director Amy Kissane is also hopeful about the project. “They really want to highlight [the building]. They’re not looking to overwhelm it. I think that they are trying to preserve that facade,” Kissane says. “I feel like they are trying very hard [to ensure] that, when you look at the building when it’s done, you will be able to tell what the original building was, there will be no question about that.” According to Barnett, the development will include about 20 newly constructed one- and two-bedroom condominiums in addition to the mill, which will house a market with food and craft vendors. A smaller shed on the property will be torn down. Parking will be off College Avenue, accessible via a pedestrian bridge over Moore’s Branch, the creek behind the property. “I think it could end up being a very cool reuse of this property. I’m glad because they don’t have to preserve the building; they could have proposed to tear it down,” Kissane says. “I think they’re trying to respect it and at the same time make the property viable. I can’t wait to see what the final project looks like.” f

think will be a very exciting Olympic games. Everyone puts on their best face, and I’m excited to be in the place itself and just being around the atmosphere, it’s one of excitement, and you get to be around a lot of people who have the same thing in mind: to try to do the best that they can. addition to coaching the UGA men’s and women’s swimming teams for more than three decades, Jack Bauerle has been coaching U.S. international teams for more than 20 years—including serving as the women’s swimming team head coach at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “It’s a really neat thing to see, because this changes their lives forever, Bauerle says. “No matter what, they’re always an Olympian. It’s a life-changer and a game-changer. They feel differently about themselves the rest of their lives, because for many of them, this was a dream when they were 8 or 9 years old. The 17-time SEC coach of the year is an assistant coach for the U.S. men’s team—which includes several UGA students—at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, which kick off Friday. All in all, according to the UGA Athletic Association, 28 current and former Bulldog athletes will compete in Rio, mostly in swimming and track-and-field events. The biggest household name is two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson. Bauerle recently spoke to Flagpole from the U.S. swimming training camp in San Antonio about his experiences and expectations for the games.
FP: Are there any UGA athletes in particular whom we should keep an eye on? JB: I think all of them have a shot at a medal, and you know some have a little bit of a better chance. What I think people have to realize is, if you’re a part of this team, you’re probably one of the top athletes in the whole world, because swimming is so difficult and so high-level, if you make this team you’re one of the very best. This is almost the cherry on top. The biggest pressure our athletes have is the Olympic trials themselves, because there are athletes that probably should have made it but didn’t. We had, without question, the best Olympic trials we have had in our history. It sent a little shock wave through the swimming world, and I spoke with a writer who said, “You know everyone always pulls for Georgia kids, which makes me feel good. I’m just going to appreciate every part of this.
FP: What is the training schedule like for you and the swim team? JB: It’s pretty different. It’s very interesting. We have a sleep expert who came in and talked to us right after the kids made the swimming team. We’ve already adjusted to a very different schedule. FP: What do you and the athletes do to unwind in your very limited, I’m sure, spare time? JB: You try to relax as much as you can. We exercise. We went out today for a run, so we don’t think about the swimming part all the time. We try to talk about other things. We have a few movies here and there. Gregg Popovich, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, he won five NBA titles, they brought him in to speak with us. And one of the best guards ever, Tony Parker, came by the pool today and swam, got in with some of the kids. So we have some inspirational talks. FP: Do you have any favorite Olympic training stories yet that you can share with us? JB: Yeah! When Tony Parker came by, he was willing to get in the pool. Turns out he has a water park in his backyard in San Antonio. He’s got a tower that’s 35 feet tall that he goes off of, and an unbelievable slide. For me, it was really neat getting the chance to talk directly with Gregg Popovich, a coach that I respect immensely, one of my favorite coaches of all time. It’s been good to have him here. When you’re in the sport for as long as I have been, your heroes are few and far between, and he’s one that I have tremendous respect for. Also, I think he’s entertaining as heck, which he was. But I think it’s also kind of fun seeing Michael [Phelps] go up and down the pool, because this very likely will be his last rodeo, and he’s the most decorated Olympian of all time. You sit back and you appreciate everything. It’s fun to be part of it. It really is. f

Secret Stages Showcases Regional Artists
Matt Hollywood Finds a New Home in the Atlanta Underground
By Maria Lewczyk music@flagpole.com
By Bobby Moore music@flagpole.com
Any
musician knows the hardest part about being an artist is getting your music heard and connecting with an audience. Thanks to discoveryminded festivals like SXSW and CMJ, this process has become easier, or at least more centralized. Yet despite the relatively unknown status of most performers at those events, the presence of corporate money, major labels and top-tier indies is unmistakable and prevents smaller, local diamonds in the rough from surfacing. One alternative is a locally curated festival free of outside interference. Not your typical music festival, Alabama happening Secret Stages—founded in 2009 to complement the now-defunct, more mainstream City Stages—is a music-discovery event that emphasizes fan, artist and industry relationships. With a grand total of 60 bands performing over two days, Secret Stages showcases artists that are not well known beyond their home cities. The fest takes place in downtown Birmingham’s historic Loft District (for those familiar with the city or Google Maps) and is spread across seven walking-distance venues and stages, allowing many different genres to flourish in their own space.
important factor, and says he makes sure to include artists of all personal orientations from as many genres as possible. “I hope some bands get discovered, get signed to a label or booking agency, get a manager or get some great live photographs,” he says. “Hopefully they can all use Secret Stages as a notch in their belt if they think of us like that.” Well-known acts that have previously played the festival include Shovels and Rope, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Hiss Golden Messenger, Dawes, William Tyler and more. This year is Secret Stages’ sixth annual event, and as usual the bill is jam-packed with up-and-coming talent. Athens is well represented; the fest will feature performances by Double Ferrari, Grand Vapids, Hot Fudge, Juan de Fuca, The Powder Room, Thayer Sarrano and Wieuca. With full weekend passes costing only $40, the festival creates an affordable opportunity for travel, discovery and entertainment. Aside from the music aspect, the purpose of Secret Stages goes a little deeper. Creating and building relationships are at the heart of the event. From relationships between attendees, artists and industry people to relationships among artists

Despite its moniker, the smallish event has become a familiar name in both artist circles and on the festival circuit. Travis Morgan, one of two masterminds behind the festival, books the bands each year. He says he focuses on finding artists on the brink of discovery. “I’ve always fought for the underdog in my years running a record label,” says Morgan, who has a hand in two Alabama-based imprints, Skybucket and Communicating Vessels. “So, I guess by that standard, we are also the underdog festival.” Boasting an impressive lineup of regional acts plus one group from Seoul, South Korea, this year’s Secret Stages features musicians of all ages and experience levels who Morgan believes deserve recognition. “For a band to play Secret Stages, it takes a high level of appreciation for their music on my part,” says Morgan. “It’s music that I would want to listen to myself.” Morgan also cites representation as an

themselves, the festival’s sense of intimacy encourages growth. Regarding Secret Stages’ impact, Morgan is optimistic. “I think in that way our festival is influencing history and culture in a small, positive way.” Speaking of history and culture, there’s lots to see and do in Birmingham in addition to Secret Stages, like the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, which has served as a museum and cultural resource center since 1992. And if you don’t feel like driving, you can take Amtrak from Gainesville or Atlanta right into downtown Birmingham. f

For
over 25 years, guitarist, bassist and songwriter Matt Hollywood has staked a reputation as a modern psychedelic and garage-rock mainstay. His first of two runs with the Brian Jonestown Massacre, from the band’s 1990 inception until 1998, is enough to knight him as psych-rock royalty. Nowadays, Hollywood fills a less conspicuous role as Atlanta rockers Reverends’ secret weapon, chasing grassroots success after years of indie rock stardom. Reverends guitarist, keyboardist and singer Dandy Lee Strickland is no stranger to Hollywood, as the two played together several years ago in Portland, OR band the Rebel Drones, alongside members of the Warlocks and the Dandy Warhols. For the past two years, the former collaborators have lived in Atlanta as roommates, playing a role in each other’s current musical endeavors. “I’d been in Florida for a while taking care of my mother after she suffered a stroke,” Hollywood says. “When she’d become more stable and I’d found a good assisted living facility for her, I started looking for somewhere I could live that was big enough I could get things done, but close enough to her that I could be there quickly in case of another emergency.” The move has benefitted Reverends, with Hollywood doing production work on the band’s forthcoming album and occasionally Reverends performing with them live. “I told him I had a room open and a good band,” Strickland adds. “We’re old friends, and I think Atlanta just made sense to him.” For Hollywood, the budding partnership provided him with a capable pool of backing musicians when the urge arose to launch a solo act. “When I got some offers to play, it just seemed logical that we all work together,” Hollywood says. Thus, Matt Hollywood and the Bad Feelings was born. The solo project usually pairs vocalist and guitarist Hollywood with Strickland on rhythm guitar, brother Daniel Strickland on bass and guitarist Taylor Wynn of Reverends, as well as drummer Corey Pallon, formerly of Order of the Owl. “The songs are mostly things I work on myself, but once other people are involved there [are] always changes,” Hollywood says. “The Bad Feelings is essentially something I tacked on to the end of my name so I wouldn’t feel as silly about going solo. The lineup [isn’t always] the same. That said, everyone who takes part is there because of the creativity and talent they can bring to the songs at the time… I bring in whoever seems right at the moment and has time to do it. We’ve got a pretty deep bench, in sports terms.” In addition to performing his solo material live since late 2014, Hollywood is
plotting a pair of successfully crowdfunded releases relevant to Strickland’s career: the already recorded but unreleased Rebel Drones album and the first Bad Feelings full-length. “The album’s coming along nicely,” Hollywood says. “Most of what we’re working on continues from things I’ve done before, but goes off in some interesting new directions. It’s not really a psych-rock record by the modern definition. There are elements of that, but I’d like to move away from what seems to me to have become a very stagnant genre. I’m more interested in sounds that are timeless and can’t be pinned down to a particular place or scene.” For Hollywood, changing musical direction does not diminish the essence of his longstanding approach to songwriting. “I try to write songs in a way that makes you
feel like you’ve already known them all your life,” he says. “I try to use the familiar with enough of a twist to make it novel. We live in a time where someone has already done almost anything you can think of with Western music… To me it’s more about being distinctive than original. You can play with what’s gone before, but make your hooks huge, and always try to get stuck in people’s heads.” Once the Bad Feelings and Reverends albums hit the streets, Hollywood says his family of bands will take a DIY approach to touring, something that wasn’t an option when playing with indie legends Brian Jonestown Massacre. “It’ll be interesting going back to touring on a small scale, rather than as part of something that’s essentially become a profit-making machine,” he says. “I could probably get used to crashing on people’s couches after the gig again.” f

MOEKE, MON. GO!: While plenty of people, including myself, wish summer would go ahead and leave, MOEKE Records still has a few things to do in its Summer Singles series. New songs are out now by Eddie Rascal, Monsoon and Future Lives. Eddie Rascal weighs in with “Born Less Bright,” a weird, punchy track that sounds like the guitars from Supergrass and the vocals from Suede—a bit rockist and a bit glammy. Monsoon’s “Gunnerru” is as good as anything on its full album and a solid continuation of its dressed-up, jittery aesthetic. The best of the three is “Brother of Mine” by Future Lives, which is well composed and melodic in a lush, ’70s pop-country style, down to its fade-out background vocals. Catch ’em all at moekerecords.bandcamp.com. WADE IN: A new seven song EP by And Others came out last week. It’s titled Dance! Seven Classic Pop Hits, and takes the blue ribbon as the best-named Athens record this year. Musically, it’s bedroompop for those sick of bedroom-pop. I was sold as soon as “Traded My Face In” started playing. There’s lots of bass wobble, echo, and layered vocals played
in Ghana) and Ghana’s Kofi Atentenben and the Warriors. The 10-track album is named Is What You Make It, and it’s aggressive and propulsive, even on tracks lesser musicians would employ simple swing patterns (like the jazz-tinged “Step By Step”). Overall, 22 musicians contributed to this between Athens and West Africa, and my only regret is that I didn’t write about it the moment it came out. It’s righteously excellent. Dig it at thetaxicabverses.bandcamp.com. RUN THIS VOODOO DOWN: Eclectic jazz combo Lovesongs has a new album out named Wax/Wane. The group features Jeff Crouch, Stan Flanders, Jack Stirling, Andrew Robinson and Jeff Rieter. This seven-track record is self-described as “Bitches Brew filtered through a grindcore filter,” which is about half right. I mean that as a compliment, too, because Bitches Brew is a masterpiece and, with rare exception, grindcore is totally idiotic. Although there’s definitely a sense of humor, especially on the underwhelming final three tracks, the best material on Wax/Wane hits early and stays good for almost a full half-hour. The first four tracks are expansive, loud, expressive and delightful. I hesitated to call Lovesongs a “jazz combo,” because that sounds dismissive and essentialist, but it sounds better than “band.” For more information and music, see notlovesongs.bandcamp.com and facebook.com/notlovesongs. f

His career spanned several mediums, ranging from movie posters, advertising designs and animation to cover art for books, records and publications such as Time magazine, TV Guide and Playboy. After serving in the Navy during World War II, spending part of his time drawing for a base newspaper in Guam, the Atlanta native returned to his home state and enrolled in the University of Georgia on the G.I. Bill. While studying under Lamar Dodd, he illustrated for the student-run newspaper The Red & Black and an off-campus humor publication named Bullsheet. With the encouragement of his instructors, he relocated to New York City to finish school at the Art Students League and pursue a career as a professional artist. Quickly settling into the city as a freelance cartoonist, Davis’ first major break was in 1950 as a contributor to EC Comics, which specialized in horror, sci-fi, humor and war comics. Davis brought nightmarish and otherworldly characters to life through Jack Davis at “Beyond the Bulldog: Jack Davis,” a 2012 exhibition at the Georgia Museum of Art. the pages of Tales From the Crypt, Many Athenians—particularly football fans—were Incredible Science Fiction, Frontline Combat, The Haunt of Fear introduced to Davis through his depictions of the Georgia and many other titles. Davis is extraordinary in the way that his seemingly separate bodies of work, each supported by its own loyal following, are ultimately able to bridge gaps between the distinct audiences they attract. His Bulldog caricatures are silly and charming enough to make any football anti-fan reconsider her love for the game, and his action-packed illustrations—whether spooky or comedic—are alluring enough to catch the eye of anyone unaware of the beauty in comics. The true extent of his artistry as an illustrator was highlighted in “Beyond the Bulldog: Jack Davis,” a 2012 exhibition at the Georgia Museum of Art guest-curated by Patrick Dean, the former Flagpole comic artist who recently eulogized Davis for Playboy. Coinciding with the football season, yet intentionally excluding Bulldog imagery in order to introduce sports fans to lesser-known works, the exhibition focused on early comics and humor pieces. The majority of pieces were black-and-white, revealing the artist’s meticulousness and skill in crosshatching. Established in 1998, the Jack Davis Distinguished Visiting Artist program at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art has honored the artist by inviting other professional illustrators to campus for annual lectures. Additionally, a fundraising campaign for the Jack Davis Scholarship, which intends to support a student focusing in illustration, is currently underway and can be found at dar.uga. edu. The Jack Davis Foundation, a nonprofit organization established to develop an archive and support exhibitions, announced its discontinuation back in February, but still offers a plethora of archival material to peruse online. Filmmaker Erica McCarthy, who splits her time between Athens and Austin, TX, has made several wonderful short videos about Davis available on Vimeo through her account for Nowhere Productions. Who is Jack Davis? is a short biography narrated by the cartoonist himself, and Animating Uga shadows the artist at work through various time lapses. The title sequence for Damn Good Dog, a documentary about Uga, features fun animated illustrations. Davis was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the National Cartoonists Society in 1996, and he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame at the Museum of American Illustration in New York in 2005. He has been one of the most influential comic artists in the past half-century, and his work will continue to inspire and inform the style of others for decades to come. f

PULASKI Indie Standouts & Mommy Moments HEIGHTS What’s New and Notable in Theaters Now By Drew Wheeler movies@flagpole.com CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (R) Captain Fantastic is summer 2016’s third wonderful indie flick. Viggo Mortensen stars as Ben Cash, a father of six raising his uniquely named children in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. Rather than go to school, he quizzes them on literary classics after days spent in arduous physical training. When Ben’s sick wife, Leslie, dies, the entire gang risks everything to travel to New Mexico for her funeral. Ben’s parenting techniques do not exactly jibe with Leslie’s parents (Frank Langella and Ann Dowd) or the police. No school plus lots of unexplainable cuts, bruises and breaks will do that. Sharp performances by Mortensen and the cadre of young actors (George MacKay, Samantha Isler, Annalise Basso, Nicholas Hamilton, Shree Crooks and Charlie Shotwell) playing the Cash children ground a comic family drama that could easily stray into touchy-feely indieville. Georgia Theatre Rooftop · 8 p.m. · $5–7 There is no better living ambassador for Classic City music than Five Eight, the long-running rock and roll quartet whose frantic yet finely tuned live show is something all true Athenians must behold at least once. Since re-releasing its 1994 would-be classic LP Weirdo in 2015 as a deluxe, remastered version, the band has been hard at work on a follow-up to 2010’s Your God Is Dead to Me Now. Recorded with local engineer Mike Albanese at Espresso Machine Studio, the new album, titled Songs for St. Jude, is due out sometime later this year. A documentary on the group is also reportedly in the works. Athens/Atlanta alt-rockers Oak House share Wednesday’s rooftop bill. [Gabe Vodicka]
Madison Co. Library · 3–5 p.m. · FREE! Beth Thompson’s nature photography simulates the wonder and beauty of microcosms and macrocosms. The ongoing series “Possible Perceptions,” named for its ability to offer alternative views of landscapes, creates complex patterns through digital manipulations, such as leaves resembling diatoms. For her latest installment, “Ocean Bound: Upstream and Downstream,” she pulled images from the Broad River, coastal rivers around Savannah and off Jekyll Island. Influenced by William Bartram, who documented his trek across the Southeast 250 years ago, Thompson seeks to inspire others to explore the world. “Ocean Bound” will remain on view through Aug. 29. [Jessica Smith]
Caledonia Lounge · 2 p.m. · donations As a member of the international Girls Rock Camp Alliance, the nonprofit Girls Rock Athens introduces local girls ages 9–15 to the world of music and performance through an immersive summer camp each year. Campers—many of whom have little to no prior musical experience—learn instruments, hear from volunteers about key aspects of the industry and organize themselves into bands, which debut their original material at a grand finale event. This year’s end-of-camp showcase takes place at the Caledonia Lounge, where a new generation will show off its chops. Donations are encouraged to help support GRA’s mission of informing and empowering young, female musicians. [GV]
The World Famous · 6 p.m. · FREE! Whether it’s addressing habitat destruction, resource depletion or other environmental issues, Will Eskridge uses his artwork to advocate for wildlife. His latest exhibition, “Deep Blue Waves,” dives into the depths of the ocean to explore its often misunderstood creatures. Primarily an oil painter who occasionally branches out into sculpture and installation, Eskridge created a series of large cyanotype solargrams for the show. Each animal’s silhouette, assembled from plant life, was made using natural sunlight. Appropriately, Eskridge’s surf band, Forbidden Waves, will perform at 8 p.m., followed by Cramps cover band The De Lux Interiors. “Deep Blue Waves” will remain on view through Oct. 1. [JS]
