Link said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But are there not strong African-American candidates in your district who could also represent the needs of their neighborhood and the needs of their community?â&#x20AC;? Hamby said.

Sims asked Denson to interveneâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;commissioners are not supposed to address each other during formal debatesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and she told Hamby to direct his comments to the mayor. But later, when she announced the T-SPLOST committee appointments, she removed one of Linkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nominees, Houle, â&#x20AC;&#x153;in light of very disruptive behavior tonight.â&#x20AC;?

She told Link to nominate someone else. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hopefully, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be a minority, and if you need help finding an appointment, I can help you,â&#x20AC;? Denson said, Dickerson piled on, too. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I found two very highly involved individuals in my district who are not white,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Regardless of skin color, Link has been a tireless advocate for minority and low-income communities, as she illustrated during her own closing comments, when she talked about the heavily African-American, quickly gentrifying West Broad neighborhood she represents. An infill ordinance winding its way through the Planning Commission (more on that later in this column) wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t protect multifamily-zoned neighborhoods from out-of-scale development. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have the opportunity to protect some of these neighborhoods, to implement some affordable housing, to tweak our zoning here and there,â&#x20AC;? Link said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not that hard to do.â&#x20AC;? [BA] Out of the Loop: Commissioners did resolve their geographical dispute from last month over funding for bicycle and pedestrian safety projects. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re having some significant issues on the Eastside, outside of the Loop, and that is just as important as other parts of the community,â&#x20AC;? Herod said. Cedar Shoals Drive is dangerous to cross, so he and Dickerson proposed adding two crosswalks with beacons and refuge islands. The cost estimate is $50,000, according to Manager Blaine Williams.

Girtz added $40,000 worth of landscaping on Prince Avenue, North Avenue, Baxter Street and Barnett Shoals Road, the rationale being that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be cheaper to do it while workers are already out there than to go back and do it later.

The slate of projects also includes improvements on Hawthorne Avenue, Alps Road, Gaines School Road and Lumpkin Street. $144,000 is budgeted for pedestrian and bike projects this year; the remainder could come from Safe Routes to School funding or money budgeted for other purposes but not spent.

conducting a traffic study and has offered to pay up to $100,000 for pedestrian safety improvements. And they want all of the crosswalk beacons in the city to be consistent so drivers are familiar with them.

The tweaked project list passed unanimously. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The spirit of cooperation on these two [commission-defined options] is much better, and I wish it was always like this,â&#x20AC;? [BA] Infill Housing: On Nov. 2, after working on them for more than a year, the Athens Clarke County Planning Commission adopted new zoning text amendments designed to address issues associated with the size and placement of infill housing. As planning commission chairwoman Alice Kinman has said, the text amendments are to â&#x20AC;&#x153;limit the effects of McMansion building.â&#x20AC;?

For each zoning classification, the amendments set the minimum size of front, side and back yards, limit the height of retaining walls and link building height with setbacks. But the new rules wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop the demolition of older houses, which are usually replaced by much larger structures. Only designation as a historic district can stop a demolition.

The other two parts of the planning staffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s approach to infill development is to require residential plans for new houses to go through a review process and to hold regular education classes on appropriate infill development. The planning commission approved these measures as well. All three will be recommended to the Mayor and Commission, who probably wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t vote on them until January. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The proposed text amendments should alleviate some of the concerns residents have with houses that are out of scale with existing development and oftentimes loom over their neighbors,â&#x20AC;? said Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation Executive Director Amy Kissane. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The plans review process may also go a long way toward helping new homeowners make sensitive design decisions, since theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be discussing their new house plans with planners who are familiar with these neighborhoods and who can guide them. But the amendments wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop demolitions.â&#x20AC;?

In September, planning Commission members sent amended regulations for single-family zones back to the staff for more tweaking and further discussion. They wanted the documents to clearly explain why a roof line can be only so high, why a house has to be set back from the street this far, and why it can be only so close to its neighbors. How do you measure setback if the lot isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rectangular? Or if it narrows as it runs front to back, or back to front? The zoning text amendments are designed to address those issues.

Local builder Michael Songster spoke in favor of the text amendments, saying he was â&#x20AC;&#x153;generally in favorâ&#x20AC;? of them.

Why Give Money to Billionaires?

Georgia Leaders Keep Spending Tax Dollars on Stadiums

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com John Malone is a very wealthy man. His net worth is estimated at $6.9 billion, and he is one of this countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest private landowners.

Arthur Blank is also a very wealthy man.

His net worth is estimated at $3.1 billion, largely from money he made as one of the founders of Home Depot.

Tony Ressler isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite as wealthy as Malone and Blank, but heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s close. His net worth is estimated at $1.4 billion.

These three billionaires have two things in common. For one, they own majorleague sports franchises. (Maloneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s company owns the Atlanta Braves, Blank the Atlanta Falcons and Ressler the Atlanta Hawks.) For another, they are being showered with tax money from state and local governmentsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a combined total of nearly $1 billion.

Cobb County put up $400 million to build a new stadium for the Braves.

The City of Atlanta is using hotel-motel tax revenues to put up $200 million to build a new stadium for the Falcons and $250 million to pay for the operation and maintenance of Blankâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stadium over the years.

The state kicked in $40 million to build a new parking deck for Blank.

Ressler is not being ignored. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced last week that the city will spend $142.5 million to renovate Philips Arena, a basketball venue that was built just 17 years ago for the Hawks.

A rational person would ask why so much tax money is being showered upon billionaires when the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s middle-income and low-income families have so many unmet needs. There are 127 public schools on the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s failing schools list. Rural hospitals are shutting down for lack of operating funds. Georgia has one of the highest

Atlanta has the largest number of schools on that failing school list, and there are streets in the city that are so pockmarked with potholes you would think youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re driving on a highway through wartorn Somalia. Why isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Reed spending Atlantaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tax funds on these fundamental needs instead of diverting the money to build sports palaces for billionaires?

Reed has the misguided idea that these sports venues will be the key to all sorts of economic development. He called the Philips project â&#x20AC;&#x153;another stake in the groundâ&#x20AC;? that will â&#x20AC;&#x153;transformâ&#x20AC;? downtown Atlanta and supposedly bring in $1.5 billion in new development. History tells us that he is wrong. Economists have done study after study of the economic impact of new stadiums and have found that they almost never live up to their boostersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; promise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most evidence suggests that sports subsidies cannot be justified on the grounds of local economic development, income growth, or job creation,â&#x20AC;? said Alex Gold and Ted Gayer of the Brookings Institution. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In fact, after 20 years of academic research on the topic, peer-reviewed economics journals contain almost no evidence that sports stadiums or franchises measurably improve local economies.â&#x20AC;?

Tim Lee, the county commissioner who engineered the Cobb County deal with the Braves, was thrown out of office by irate voters. Reed canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run for another term.

But it really doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter. When Lee and Reed have departed from the political scene, there will still be politicians who will insist that we give millions of tax dollars to billionaires who already have plenty of money so that they can build stadiums that arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t needed. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the American way. f

UGA’s Payroll Turmoil

Fund Started to Help Employees Affected by Pay Changes

The turmoil hangs on that difference. Thousands of UGA employees who are currently paid monthly are being transitioned to a biweekly paycheck. Annual salaries remain the same, but the timing is thrown off. During 10 months of the year, employees will receive two biweekly checks that provide 12/13 of their gross pay compared to monthly checks. Two months of the year—March and September in 2017—employees will receive three paychecks.

That first paycheck of the transition will come late, too.

To create a buffer for human resources staff to calculate overtime, UGA is delaying employees’ pay for the second half of November until eight days after the month ends.

“It is a great thing to pay people fairly for the overtime hours they work,” Yager says. “What I didn’t understand initially was why UGA had to implement the new law the way they did.”

Although the update was announced in May, Congress pushed back on the law until July. After that, colleges across the University System of Georgia coordinated a plan

hile most ribbon-cuttings involve a colorful bow, Jonathan Smith, president of Free I.T. Athens, thought it would be more appropriate to officially open his organization’s doors by cutting a parallel ATA data ribbon. If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry, no one else does either—unless you happen to be the type of person who volunteers at a nonprofit that refurbishes old computers.

An advocate of free technology and free software since 2005, Free I.T. has distributed more than 2,000 computers not only in the U.S., but Cameroon, Peru and El Salvador as well. It’s also working to reduce e-waste in landfills, which is responsible for the majority of toxic waste buildup beneath the rubbish, according to Smith. The group has collected over 100 tons of computer equipment that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.

After destroying any information that comes in with the e-waste, they recycle what they can’t use through a verified recycler called VIA Technologies. Once data has been wiped or hammered to bits and parts salvaged or kept, the donations either become new used computers, or the parts will be separated and kept in bins, available for purchase at a low cost to those in need of computer components.

While the work of recycling, refurbishing and redistributing hardware is a big part of what Free I.T. does, there are other important parts of its work. Its mission statement proclaims that closing the digital divide is a key concept, as well as technology education, free software and open alter-

Right now, the store is open Sundays from 1–5 p.m., Wednesdays from 6–8 p.m. and Fridays from 3–7 p.m. “One of our first orders of business is to expand those hours,” says Treasurer Paul Walker. The group also hopes that with the new space, it can draw more volunteers and add regular classes to the schedule, in addition to the tech support offered.

Volunteering has its own benefits. While helping to reduce e-waste and refurbish computers, volunteers get to take home equipment after a set number of hours, and no experience is needed to sign up.

The whole process starts in the back of the store, outside, where donations are dropped off and then triaged by the team.

Since data mining is a real and dangerous threat, Walker assures donors that they take every precaution.

“We pull all the hard drives first. We want everybody to know that when they donate, not only are they keeping things

Free software is important because not only is it monetarily free, but it encompasses four freedoms, which are scrawled on the whiteboard on a wall: “To run the program for any purpose. To study and change the program. To redistribute exact copies. To redistribute modified versions.”

“Once you get it set up and it’s working, it’s always working. They do push out updates. They’re always free,” says Walker about open-source software like Ubuntu and Linux. Another advantage of free software is that it’s mostly virus-free. Hackers generally don’t write viruses for Linux, because companies that have data hackers want to steal don’t use it, Walker says.

As it expands into its new space, attracts more eyes and hopes to partner with more nonprofits, Free I.T. is committed to providing technology opportunities for everyone in Athens, for those who are in need of a computer to those who simply want to learn more about them. Walker believes “every nerd in Athens should be here.” f

Eason Shows His Potential The Freshman QBâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Late Drive Beats Kentucky

Georgia snapped out of its two-game losing streak on Saturday with a 27-24 victory over Kentucky in Lexington thanks to a last-second field goal from Rodrigo (aka GODrigo) Blankenship. However, while Blankenship scored the final points, it was Easonâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;who wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t spectacular against Kentucky, passing for 245 yards and a touchdown, but only completed 17 of his 31 attemptsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;who engineered the final drive.

The score was tied 24-24, and the Bulldogs started the possession on their own 25 with 2:47 on the clock. From there, Eason methodically moved the ball down the field. He completed all four of his passes

have to score. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s somehow calmer when the pressure ratchets up. If the secondary is backing off, like Kentuckyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s did, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll dink and dunk. If the secondary is pressing, like Tennesseeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s did, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll look for a man to beat his defender and go long. He seems more deliberate and decisive in late drives, an attribute you only expect from the most seasoned quarterbacks.

There are still plenty of things for Eason to work on, of course. The most important of those, in my mind, is his accuracy on deep balls. Eason consistently overthrows or underthrows receivers who go long. And that really sucks, because he can throw the ball a quarter-mile. He has the arm strength

There was also Georgiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final drive against Tennessee, which featured a bomb to Riley Ridley that should have been the the third game-winning drive of his career had it not been forâ&#x20AC;Ś well, you know what happened next. If weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re being charitableâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and I always feel charitable after a winâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also give him some credit for the final drive against Vanderbilt. Eason completed a long pass on fourth down to keep that drive alive before terrible play-calling by Jim Chaney ended it.

Eason has proven to be so effective in the two-minute drill because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the one time in the game heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forced to take what the defense gives him. For most of the game, it seems like he has an idea in his head of whom he wants to throw to and looks only that way from the snap, a common problem among young quarterbacks.

But he seems to understand that isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t possible when the game is on the line and you

to put the ball anywhere on the field. As he gets more accurate on those throws, it will create a whole new dimension for the passing game.

Then there are some things outside of his control, like the quality of the offensive line and his receivers. The line canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop a car with a red light, and the receivers, as I established earlier this season, suffer from the worst-case of weiner fingers Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever seen. Both of those units should improve along with Eason over the next few seasons.

When they get close to playing the same level as Eason and Georgiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tailbacksâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;who finally got it going again with 215 yards on the groundâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;this offense could be dangerous. And even if they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t close that talent gap, Eason looks good enough to give Georgia a damn fine offense with his individual skill alone.

Auburn is next, and that will be a huge challenge for Eason. He had more time to pass against UK than he did against Florida, thanks to UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s relatively weak pass rush.

Auburn has some of the best defensive linemen in America, though, and I guarantee theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re licking their lips while watching film of Georgiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s line. That could create another really bad day for Eason. But even if it does, if Georgia can keep it close until the end, and Eason has the ball with a chance to win, I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bet against him. f

Land Artist Chris Taylor Connecting to Nature Through Colors, Textures and Patterns 18 + UP

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com If you’ve ever taken a walk and come across a perfectly arranged color gradient of oak leaves, a mandala of delicate flower petals, a weaving zig-zag of smooth stones or a giant nest of branches, you may have discovered the work of local land artist and teacher Chris Taylor. A longtime graphic artist and active musician who can be found playing drums with the Classic City Dance Band, Taylor’s own introduction to land art came a few years ago through watching Rivers and Tides, a documentary about British artist and environmentalist Andy Goldsworthy, one of the most prominent forces behind site-specific installations within natural and urban settings.

“His work essentially legitimized what I had been doing since I was a kid: playing with sticks,” says Taylor. “I started playing more and more, then started working with students at my daughter’s elementary school as a means of introducing them to nature, and as a way of self-expression for students who may not have access to art supplies or other materials.”

Taylor documents his installations through photographs, which are compiled under the moniker 34 Degrees North (34north.org), named for the approximate latitude of his hometown, Blue Ridge. Located near the northern tip of Georgia, right at the Southern end of the Appalachians, it’s a diverse and inspirational landscape full of mountains, lakes and streams perfect for exploring.

“My aesthetic and use of resources is shaped greatly by the people of the mountains, a culture rich in traditions of using what they had to work with,” says Taylor.

It’s fitting that someone who spent a good part of his childhood playing in the forests would grow up to create site-specific artworks within the environment. Assembling found materials into patterns or sculptures focused on color and shape—essentially creating something out of nothing—speaks to the resourcefulness of Appalachian culture.

“When teaching, I have students follow a process: explore, collect, curate and create. It’s how I work,” says Taylor. “I go to a place, get a feel for it, see what’s available and hopefully create something that mimics or fits in with the environment. I have forms in my head all the time, so sometimes I try one, or just see where the space takes me.”

One of Taylor’s most intensive projects so far has been the “Garden Nests,” a series of giant nests scattered along the walking trails at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.

Stumbling upon one is mysterious and almost alarming— how ginormous of a bird could possibly reside in a home so huge? Each is wide enough for a human to stand in (or eat lunch and take a nap, as the artist has been told before), and invites walkers to stop, wonder and play awhile.

“The process was designed to mimic creating a home.

Not only students, but teachers, artists, musicians and others come to Athens and create lives using the resources available locally,” says Taylor. “If they move on, then another soul occupies that space allowing Athens an environment full of diverse, wonderful people. Birds do the same.”

Constructed semi-weekly over the course of nine months, the 24 “Garden Nests” were assembled using precut, cleared or fallen wood and limbs. For anyone hoping to scout out each one, a map of locations is available online. A separate series of sculptures equally worthy of finding are “The Gates” at Sandy Creek Nature Center, which appear as vertically oriented hoops. Nearly mystical in their otherworldly portal appearance, “The Gates” challenged their designer to use balance and tension to get the pieces of wood to stay in place.

The month of October alone was an impressive demonstration of the artist’s wide range of abilities and ongoing experimentation with different materials.

For Ciné, he constructed a large Wicker Man in celebration of Halloween and the cinema’s horror film series, Son of Schlocktoberfest. During Transpectacle, an outdoor festival featuring live painting, music and an artist market, he built a sculpture on-site using plastic repurposed from water bottles. For the “Wild Rumpus Art Show” at Creature Comforts, he contributed an abstract spectrogram painting inspired by the echolocation of bats.

“Land art is inherently about form, using balance, contrast and shape to convey its message. However, it can be difficult to speak of emotion,” he says. “I found that I was craving color, which led me to painting and working with yarn and textiles. I am able to use my technique of layering to create my message with both paint and yarn effectively. I find myself painting more and more.”

Taylor has worked as a graphic artist for over 20 years, designing everything from magazine layouts to band posters to book covers, and was the art director for the Terry College of Business for 17 years. This past January, he left his career at UGA to pursue art and teaching full-time. He currently visits Double Helix twice a week to teach about graphic design and land art, and leads an after-school program once a week at Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary. In the past, he’s also taught workshops at the Athens Community Council on Aging and Little Rose Nature School at the Lyndon House Arts Center.

“What I do, anyone can do. It’s why I love teaching—I’m giving permission to create out of thin air. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be you,” he says. “I’ve been given a great opportunity to work with and teach children of some of the best artists in Athens. If I thought about it too much, I’d be terrified. But when I hear from someone that their kids enjoyed working with me, well, that’s one of the best feels ever.”

Given the impermanent nature of his chosen medium— components are subject to the elements, as well as natural decay—the best way to follow his work is through social media. Exploring the archives is a wonderful way to observe the diversity of flora, but is no replacement for experiencing it in person. His artwork not only captures the simple beauty readily accessible among the changing colors, unusual textures and recurring patterns in nature, but encourages viewers to go discover their own connection.

As evil plots go, Kaeciliusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is not the MCUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strongest. Fortunately, everything else about Dr. Strangeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s origin story is magically entertaining, creating a film as multidimensional as its magical hero. Not only is Doctor Strange thoroughly entertaining, it is smart and chock-full of eye candy, as director Scott Derrickson and his FX team get the most out of their 3D special effects. Strange dealing in magicâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;rather than repulsors or super-powered punchesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; lends a freshness to the fight scenes, even as some of the movieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s toughest critics will say the M.C. Escher world-shifting is a bit Inception-y. With a mind of its own, Strangeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cloak of Levitation provides an inanimate character of near-Disney proportions. Thanks to the onetime Sinister director, the movie is Marvelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most horrific as well; though not a horror film per se, it has more moments reminiscent of the genre than any of its predecessors.

Finally, Marvel continues its success at casting its most singular heroes.

Cumberbatch is a strong addition to its stable, especially in the face of the impending Avengers: Infinity War, where his intelligence and charm will be powerful enough to outsmart and outwit Robert Downey Jr.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tony Stark. (That battle should be the most anticipated one to come.) Sadly, Rachel McAdams is no more than a stock love interest; she deserves a superpowered place in the MCU like that provided to Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is bound to shake up Strangeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neck of the Marvel neighborhood as peerturned-rival Baron Mordo. Back to Basics Liberated, Bob Mould Returns to His Punk Roots

ew artists have managed to exercise their artistic freedom like Bob Mould. The guitarist and singer, who founded the legendary punk act Hüsker Dü, as well as the more radio-friendly Sugar, has taken plenty of detours in his four decades of recording. His latest string of releases, including this year’s Patch the Sky, prove that Mould is still capable of wowing his ever-expanding audience.

Mould credits a recent return to his trademark brash yet melodic punk form in part to his 2011 autobiography, See a Little Light, which he wrote with the assistance of music journalist Michael Azerrad. Azerrad, who previously edited the popular music site The Talkhouse, also featured Hüsker Dü in Our Band Could Be Your Life, his stunning literary portrayal of The Minutemen, Minor Threat, Mission of Burma, Black Flag and other formative 1980s punk and rock bands.

“Recompiling all my work and where I was as a person, I learned a lot about myself. Maybe it wasn’t closure, but it provided some understanding for me of what I had been up to for 15 or so years… It was very difficult. It was only liberating when it was finished,” he says of the revealing autobiography, which features candid details of Hüsker Dü’s demise, as well as an engagement with the musician’s homosexuality, which had previously been something of an open secret.

“It was three years of research and writing and dealing publicly with private issues that I had never spoken about,” Mould says. “It was a lot of work, but I think it took a lot of weight off of my shoulders.”

For Mould, it wasn’t simply reflecting on his career that breathed new life into his music; he found that making new music with a more-than-capable band was also inspiring.

“I’ve had a really great rhythm section that adds so much to my work,” Mould says. That rhythm section includes Superchunk and Mountain Goats drummer Jon Wurster and Jason Narducy, who serves as the touring bassist for Superchunk and fronts the band Split Single.

Though the unit has toured together since 2005, an appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman” last February provided new evidence of the trio’s raw power. A viral video of the performance captured bits of the ceiling

crumbling during blistering renditions of “Tomorrow Morning” and “Kid With Crooked Face” from 2015’s Beauty & Ruin.

Mould says his continued relationship with Merge Records is also partially responsible for his recent artistic renaissance. The North Carolina-based curators have

released the last three Mould recordings starting with 2012’s Silver Age, all of which have been met with nearly universal praise from critics and fans.

“For these past three records, people seem very into it, and I think it’s because Merge is such a great label,” says Mould. “When people are loyal to a label, it’s because they trust the label and the label earns that trust by putting out good music. It’s been a great fit.”

Mould’s recent work is perhaps best understood in the context of his brief detour into electronica and DJ music in the late ’90s. Mould notes that the time spent away from his usual guitar-centric sound was an attempt to recapture the liberatory impulse that initially captivated him as a young man.

“After the first wave of punk, rave culture became the new punk rock—kids finding abandoned airport hangars and throwing DIY parties with their own generators,” says Mould. “That was all very analogous to the punk rock of the late ’70s or early ’80s that I remember.”

Yet while Mould has never shied away from experimenting with new genres, he’s hesitant to say that new technology is always in the best interest of both artists and fans. “My fear is that I don’t think people understand the sense of community that live music creates,” he says. “When I walk out on a stage, I’m hopeful that I’ll be met with people’s faces, and not a right hand holding a piece of glass at me.”

Fans of Mould’s mid-career work will be pleased to learn that former Sugar bassist and UGA Music Business Program Director David Barbe’s band, the Quick Hooks, will open for the legendary punk rocker during his two nights in Athens and Atlanta this week. Though Mould says an onstage reunion may or may not happen, he’s quick to point out that the friendship between the two has remained intact since Sugar’s dissolution. In fact, Barbe invited Mould to speak to his Music Business students during one of his recent visits to town.

Regardless of how his past has been chronicled on record and through his autobiography, Mould seems content turning his sights on the present. If anything, he’s found a way to continue learning and appreciating the surprises that come along after so many decades of making music.

“I guess I’m enjoying the wisdom that comes with age, along with these last bits of youthful energy,” Mould says with a laugh. “I’m very grateful that everything came together in the last decade like it did. I had no idea that it was going to go so well.” f

An Unholy Union Rev. Peyton and Supersuckers Raise Heaven and Hell

The trio that makes up Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band is also enthusiastic about its set, which draws heavily from the group’s hard-driving, fun-loving 2015 release So Delicious. Peyton says he considers it their best album yet. “It’s easy to listen to and fun to play. Usually I’m bored with the songs by the time the record’s out, but this one is not that way for me.”

Part of that, he says, is because of his role as producer, something he’s been doing lately for other acts as well. Another part is being associated for the first time with Yazoo Records, best known for its loving reissues of lost 1920s blues masters. “I grew up being obsessed with everything Yazoo Records put out,” Peyton says. “Seeing that imprint on the record has been a really special thing—more than I can explain.”

Though they’d never encountered each other before, the two bands are united by their rambunctious joy. Established in 1988, Supersuckers are the senior members of the tour—not that Spaghetti’s swagger suffers a hit in anyone’s company. They’ve worked with everyone from Willie Nelson to Eddie Van Halen to Kelly Deal to Lydia Loveless, who appears on their latest album, Holdin’ the Bag. “It’s hard to be the coolest guys in the room when you’re with the Supersuckers, but they do a good job,” Spaghetti says of his tourmates.

Released in 2015, Holdin’ the Bag is a country album that marks one of the band’s periodic departures from its signature postrockabilly sound, though it features the same raucous spirit that animates albums like The Evil Powers of Rock ’n’ Roll. A cancer diagnosis kept Spaghetti from hitting the road to support the album upon its release, but he’s happy to report that he is now cancer-free and ready to “keep on keepin’ on.” He has a lot of affection for the new material, but says the all-country set the

Asked about the spiritual divide between the bands, Spaghetti says Rev. Peyton isn’t going to convert him. “It’s all Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny to me. We side with the bad guy because it’s more fun.” Peyton’s only plan for the Supersuckers is to get them on stage together as much as possible. He would also like Spaghetti to appear on his new podcast, “Hard Times and Weirdness,” which leapt into iTunes’ top 10 music podcasts upon launching last month with almost zero promotion.

The vibe from Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band is decidedly more benevolent, drawing on its frontman’s love of Delta blues and gospel, and the region that birthed it.

Getting the two groups together to coheadline a national tour might sound like a wager—or a rare collaboration—between God and the devil, but Supersuckers vocalist and mastermind Eddie Spaghetti says the idea sprang from a more grounded source.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been exactly a year since this was announced, and, honestly, it was worth the wait. 2015 was an exceedingly productive year for West, and he released the first single off this new album last November. This year has been a little quieter for him, but now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s evident why. His biggest asset has always been his ability to hit hard lyrically with a flow thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s solidly mid-tempo, without ever deviating into rapid-fire rhymes or trendy flatlining. Indeed, although he deftly played court jester with his Shoulda Had a Verse mixtapes, Dictator is the opposite of a trend-chaser; heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fully competent and confident in his style, with zero false flexing. Lyrically, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of on the nose, with varying tunes addressing anti-Zionist/pro-Palestine themes, antipolice, anti-predatory behavior, etc. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing terribly compelling in the actual meat of the message, though, as the lyrics are largely a mishmash of pasted-together sentences with no real narrative or novel perspective. PLAY DEEP: Athens experimental/improvisational landmark Killick Hinds has a new record out, joined by drummer Jamie DeRevere and craftsman extraordinaire bassist Michael Manring. The whole of it is very collaborative-sounding and not a case of session folks sitting in. Actually, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nice hallmark of most of Killickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work, and undoubtedly a contributing factor for his unstoppable release schedule. This one is titled Lifelike Boy Android, and takes its seat right in the middle of middle-brow 1980s aesthetics, from its Columbia Records red-spine artwork to sly (read: cheeky) nods toward both The Policeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Roxanneâ&#x20AC;? and Kansasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dust in the Windâ&#x20AC;?â&#x20AC;&#x201D;and probably more I missedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;to the overall analog sci-fi feel of the thing. Like so much of Killickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work, it features humor, both subtle and blatant, and a sense of spontaneity. Although Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve felt pretty astute talking about his albums in the past, after a few listens this one is starting to speak more and more for itself.

NEAR WILD HEAVEN: Athens psych-pop composer Jesse Kennedy has a new album out under his Wild Abandon moniker.

We last heard from Kennedy via his record Lovedragon, which came out in August. This new six-track offering is titled Miss Mary Sunday, and if you could ride the dragon you can definitely get with this, too. Kennedyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ear for melody is a thing of beauty, especially on the first two songs, â&#x20AC;&#x153;With Youâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Part of Baby.â&#x20AC;? The latter does rhythm and blues over the top of a slightly sinister keyboard with expert execution. Everything kind of bottoms out on the instrumental â&#x20AC;&#x153;Blossoming Promises.â&#x20AC;? Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no reason for it to be here, as it serves only as a vague placeholder on an already short record. The final track, â&#x20AC;&#x153;With Heaven on Our Side,â&#x20AC;? closes this chapter of Wild Abandon in a full thrust of echo, keyboard wash and deliberate rhythm. Honestly, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve no idea why Kennedy lists â&#x20AC;&#x153;freak folkâ&#x20AC;? as a category for all this. Chicken Salad Overload Plus, a Quick Trip to Chattanooga

By Hillary Brown food@flagpole.com LADIES WHO LUNCH: Until I moved to Athens in 1996, at the age of 18, I probably hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ever really eaten chicken salad. Although I grew up in Atlanta, neither of my parents is from the South, and mayo-based salads of all kinds were the kind of thing I avoided at potlucks. For one thing, I went years without eating mayonnaise at all, due to a strong dislike of eggs. For another, they seemed like mysterious piles of glop. Who knew what was in there? There could be secret ingredients that I had an aversion to.

But then, like many young adults, I made up my mind to expand my palate, and although chicken salad isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily in the same category as anchovies and organ meats, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at least in the same zip code.

Athens is kind of a hotbed of chicken salad, with a lot of different variations: with curry or tarragon at Martiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at Midday, made with yogurt at The National, available in grocery stores from the now-departed Five Points Deli, from Phickles made with its hot pickles, etc. So is there a need for Chicken Salad Chick (in the Beechwood shopping center at 196 Alps Road, between Willyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Buffaloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, 706-549-7580), a franchise out of Auburn, AL that serves 15 different variations on chicken salad? Then again, did that ever stop anyone?

Basically, Chicken Salad Chick is catnip for people who can tell you the difference between a Jon Jon and a bubble. In other words, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about as preppy as you get, decorated in green and white vertical stripes with hand-drawn red flowers for accents and a lot of script-y font. Said chicken salads are available either prepackaged out of a cooler (as Quick Chicks, $10.99 each for a clamshell that serves about four people) or in various combinations as a sandwich or a scoop. For my money, the best one is the JalapeĂąo Holly, studded with small bits of pickled jalapeĂąo and not a whole lot else.

On the whole, the signature creation is a little short on salt, which is welcome news if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re watching your sodium intake and consider chicken salad a health food.

The Classic Carol is Chicken Salad Chickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fairly straightforward, not processed into complete mush but still very scoopable. More outrĂŠ creations, like the Barbie-Q (barbecue-flavored but not really able to hold its shape) and the Jazzy Julie (cayenne, bacon and cheddar), arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as successful as the more traditional iterations, like Oliviaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Old South (hard-boiled egg and sweet pickles) or the Fancy Nancy (apples, grapes and pecans).

If you hate chicken salad, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also pimento cheese and a small selection of deli meat sandwiches. If you hate mayo, you have fewer options. There are a few sides, including a broccoli salad with bacon and cheese and a grape salad with a creamcheese-based sweet dressing, plus brown sugar and pecans, which sounds horrifying but is, in fact, not bad. A different cookie and soup are offered daily. Chicken Salad Chick is open from 10:30 a.m.â&#x20AC;&#x201C;8 p.m.

OUT OF TOWN: If you find yourself in Chattanooga, TN, let this serve as a recommendation that you drive north to the neighborhood of Red Bank, away from the tourist attractions, and visit Dubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Place (4408 Dayton Blvd., Chattanooga, 423-8753151). Opened in the 1950s, it has a small menu and an even smaller space festooned with license plates, with about five seats at a counter inside and a few umbrellaed picnic tables out back. The sign outside reads â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shakes Malts Sundies Food to Go,â&#x20AC;? which is pretty accurate.

In some respects, Dubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offers a ton of different ice cream flavors, but what that

really means is that it doctors the vanilla from its soft-serve machine (which also does chocolate and swirl) with a few pumps from the snow-cone syrups it has in profusion. The staff will tell you it works better for a shake or another kind of frozen drink than it does for a straight-up ice cream, unless you are a child or a hummingbird.

If you are an adult, get a dip cone, mostly available just in chocolate unless itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a special occasion and you might be able to choose cherry.

The other thing Dubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is known for is the crumble burger, a large, flat, loosely formed

patty with lots of tasty browned bits on its big surface area. Better yet are its barbecue sandwiches. Added to the menu when Dubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s came under new ownership a few years ago, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re made from pork smoked on-premises, chopped but not too fine, with plenty of bark, sauced with a pretty zingy mix of vinegar and not too much tomato and topped with a peppery slaw thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll clean out your sinuses. They taste like October feels when thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little bite in the air. Dubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s is open for lunch and dinner until 8 or 9 p.m.

There won’t be many more chances to see Wet in as intimate a venue as the Caledonia, so mark this show as a must-see.

Advice for Athens’ Loose and Lovelorn

We are starting to talk about getting married, and he’s been saying things that are really making me think twice. For instance, he wants to pay all of our bills and have me pay him a flat rate every month, to cover my half. I wonder, why not just have joint accounts? More importantly, he said that he wants to ask my father for permission to marry me before he actually proposes to me.

I had no clue that he was so traditional, and it makes me wonder if he’s really lame underneath it all, and if he’ll suddenly change once we get married and move in together—we have never lived together, and we only stay at each other’s places on weekends, since we live in different towns about two hours away, though we do go on couples vacations.

Am I overthinking this?

Last week, I was dog-sitting for her and ended up spraining both of my ankles really badly. She was only a few hours away, so I expected her to come home and nurse me back to health—but she won’t! She’s still out making tons of cash, and it looks like she’s having the most amazing time without me. I know her touring partner is a great friend of hers, but this woman is getting miles more attention from my girlfriend than I am, and I can barely walk right now, which is starting to depress me.

Our finances are fine, so there’s no need for her to remain on tour. I think she’s just having more fun with other people and doesn’t have space to support me while I’m injured, and it really hurts.

Stuff like this has happened before between us, and I’m thinking about breaking up with her. Am I overreacting or being too jealous? This feels like the last straw for me.

Maybe.

The “asking your dad” thing is something that a surprising number of guys still do, and I don’t get it either. The most grimy punk and metal bros I’ve ever known have asked their wives’ dads for permission to marry, so maybe it’s something the dads in question are insisting on. Who knows?

It’s obvious you’re not comfortable with that, so tell him so.

The red flag is the money stuff, real talk.

He wants to be in control of the finances, which is a bad sign, in my opinion. This could turn into him eventually telling you that it’s OK, you don’t have to pay anything—you’re married, after all. It’s never a good idea to have one person holding the purse strings in a relationship, as it can become a serious point of contention or even a bargaining chip used to manipulate the poorer partner.

Seriously, don’t let him control all of the household finances. Set up auto-pay from a joint account. Perhaps he’s just trying to be nice, but this could be the tip of an iceberg.

He’s not your sugar daddy—he’s your fiancé.

I don’t think you’re overreacting at all. Giving without receiving is one of the main ways we show our loved ones that we care. You’re injured and it’s bumming you out, and your expectations don’t seem out of the ordinary at all. Work obligations can be hard to ignore, but most partnered people would hurry to their lover’s side if they couldn’t walk. With all your finances in order and her close proximity, I must say it’s definitely telling that she won’t come home.

If this is a pattern, I’d be worried. It seems to me that she’d rather be out having fun—not just making money, but reveling in the touring life—than nursing her injured partner. How long have y’all been together? If this is a long-term partnership and she’s choosing her work buddy over your sprained ankles, I’d definitely call that emotional cheating.

Your partner seems to be avoiding the tough parts of being in a relationship, or at least this one: sticking by your baby’s side when they’re not 100 percent. The breakup call is yours to make, but this is definitely problematic behavior that should be addressed. f
