Big Development, Small Houses Plus, Dog Fences and More Local News

By Blake Aued and John Huie news@flagpole.com A proposed mixed-use development on Prince Avenue looks poised to advance after ACC planning commissioners and most nearby residents praised it at a hearing last week.

The development at 1190 Prince—on vacant lots totaling six acres between Rite Aid and McDonald’s that are currently used as a gravel parking lot for Athens Regional—would include a small grocery store and 48 two-bedroom apartments in one four-story building (with the top floor stepped back from the road); a two-story building with a restaurant, rooftop patio and smaller retail spaces; a parking deck built into the hill on the back side of the property with driveways off Prince and Nacoochee Avenue; and green space with a pedestrian connection at the back of the development near Hiawassee Avenue.

Several speakers from the Boulevard neighborhood praised the development and the way the developers—Bryan Austin, John Stamm, Trey Wallace and architect Bob Smith—incorporated their input. The result is light-years better than the medical office proposed for the lot 15 years ago, they said.

However, activist Tony Eubanks noted that the neighborhood is at the mercy of

developers because the ACC code has no protections against commercial development encroaching on residential parts of the Prince Avenue corridor. And he criticized the amount of parking in the development, which exceeds what’s required by ACC. “If we’re going to build these things so neighbors can walk to them, we have to trust that they will,” Eubanks said. “These minimum parking requirements are killing us.”

Even supporters expressed concern about increased traffic on Nacoochee, which leads to Chase Street Elementary, and one Boulevard resident said he’s skeptical the development will succeed, given that the Bottleworks never seems to be completely full, and another, similar mixed-use project called 100 Prince is planned for the former St. Joseph Catholic Church a few blocks away.

“It’s going to be half-empty,” Thomas Weiner predicted. “We’re going to end up with this giant building, and we’ll be stuck with it for 50 years.”

Planners noted that, if the development doesn’t draw a grocery store, the 28,700square-foot commercial space will exceed the county’s 10,000-square-foot limit on

retail stores in commercial-neighborhood zones. And planning commissioner David Finkel wondered how a grocery store at 1190 Prince would affect Daily Groceries Co-op’s plans to move into 100 Prince. “It’s two different markets,” replied Jim Warnes, the attorney for the 1190 Prince project.

“They won’t be competing with each other.”

They didn’t vote on a recommendation, but overall, planning commissioners spoke positively about the development. “I like the proposal,” Hank Joiner said. “I like the way Prince Avenue is going. Laurie deVegter combined seven lots that were too small to build on under ACC’s code and is proposing five one-bedroom houses on the resulting half-acre parcel between West Hancock and Indale avenues near the intersection with North Billups Street (in addition to a three-bedroom house that would remain in place). She called it a “pocket neighborhood” with a common lawn and parking—the first of its kind in Athens—at the Dec. 8 ACC Planning Commission meeting, and said it could help meet a need for affordable infill housing.

housing in-town. This is exactly the type of thing we should be looking for.”

Nearby residents don’t like the project, though. They said they’re worried about too-dense development, loud music and people coming and going at all hours. “We really need to look at these things, not just put up stuff any old way,” Joseph Bell said.

In a twist, deVegter could build the cottages tomorrow without seeking permission, because the property is zoned multifamily, but they would have to be rentals, because she couldn’t subdivide the lot.

Approving her plan would allow her to sell them individually as single-family homes.

It became apparent as the meeting went on that deVegter did not communicate with the neighbors, who were envisioning the three-story student rentals that have come to dot the Hancock Corridor over the past decade. Planning commissioners told her to meet with them, sort things out and come back. [BA] Don’t Fence Me In: Whether or not they meet the county’s legal requirements, some ACC dog owners have installed underground fences that shock a dog through an electronic collar if it tries to leave its yard. But “wireless” or “radio” fences aren’t as effective as traditional fences in some ways—the collar’s batteries can die, the dog can charge past the buried signal wire regardless, and they don’t prevent other animals or children from entering the yard.

But last week, ACC commissioners voted 8-2 to legalize electronic fences, and nixed a proposed requirement that the owner must be present. Owners of electronic fences must now post signs so the public will know that the fence exists, and “dangerous” dogs that have killed or injured another dog or cat in the past will still have to be confined using a physical fence.

The discussion was civil, but the issue, like any involving animals, was controversial. A parade of dog owners defended electronic fences—no one spoke against them—as being effective, humane, less unsightly and less expensive than conventional fences. Valerie Dickey told commissioners that her dogs can jump or dig out of a conventional fence. “My one dog can clear eight feet, just by jumping,” she said, and a chain-link fence with a concrete footing could cost $15,000 to build. Her electronic fence has kept her three dogs confined for the past four years with no problems, she said.

Terry Osbolt, who installs such fences professionally, said he guarantees them to keep dogs in, and not one of his 2,000 installations has failed. The dogs require a little training, he said, but “after three or four days, the dogs don’t get any more zaps.

They know better.”

But that wasn’t Commissioner Andy Herod’s experience. “We had an electronic fence, and that was the worst expenditure of money I’ve made in a long time,” he said. “We put it around a pond. If the dogs wanted to get in the pond, the electronic fence didn’t make any difference whatsoever.” The issue only came up, Herod added, after a Municipal Court decision declared the fences legal. Herod was “baffled” by that ruling, he said; the law “very clearly” requires fences to keep other dogs or people out, and electronic fences can’t do that.

“Electronic fences have always been illegal in Clarke County,” he said.

But other commissioners were unpersuaded, or felt it was too much to ask dog owners to always be present when an electronic fence is in use. The change will be evaluated in one year. [John Huie] f

This Week in Trumpkinland If

there’s any fun to be had during the Trump Administration, it will be to watch what happens when a terrifically insecure man makes insane promises to curry affection and praise, only to find himself unable to deliver much of anything.

Promises already impossible off the rip were made even more undoable with each superlative (“best!” “greatest!”) and hyperbolic (“tremendous!” “huge!”) addendum. So, feeling his oats on the day after the election, Trump didn’t promise just any infrastructure program. He said, “We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals.” All of which will be “second to none” and “put millions of our people to work.” Oh, and he promises it’ll be “revenue neutral,” meaning that it won’t come from deficit spending.

Not gonna happen. First off, whatever does get built won’t be the best in the world. That simply won’t happen without actually spending what world-class projects cost. The price tag on a basic infrastructure reboot would be upwards of $3.6 trillion, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers, and it’s highly unlikely that the Republican-controlled Congress would sign off on even a tenth of that. So Trump’s ruse is to promise a $1 trillion infrastructure plan that sounds to most voters like what we’ve always done: The government, using its own funds, hires workers (and some subcontractors) to build roads, bridges, etc. But all it is really are massive tax cuts to try to entice private companies to build the projects. The government won’t be funding the projects but essentially selling them off to corporations.

It’s a “privatization fire sale,” writes David Dayen at the New Republic. It’s simply more neoliberalism passed off as generous populism. Instead of funding the projects themselves, the government will be funding the profits of companies, and when profits don’t look good enough, those companies will opt for tolls and user fees, say experts. Even high-toll elite roads might be built for those who can afford a quicker commute.

That’s because, under Trump’s plan, projects will have to be monetizable, with continuing revenue streams. Projects unattractive to corporations—like updating Flint, MI’s water system, for example—simply won’t be pursued, since the promise of profits is the only motivator in Trump’s current plan. With contemporary capitalism increasingly defined by extreme winners and losers, Trump’s privatization plan could cement, quite literally, inequality into our built environment. [Matthew Pulver]

Merry Christmas, David Ralston The Georgia Supreme Court’s Gift to the House Speaker

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com It isn’t quite Christmas Day, but Rep. David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), the speaker of the Georgia House, has already received probably the best gift he ever got in his life.

The present was delivered last week by the Georgia Supreme Court, which handed down a ruling that allows Ralston, who is a lawyer, to continue working as an attorney despite admitted violations of two rules of professional conduct.

Ralston got into this predicament quite a while back when he represented a couple, Paul and Shanda Chernak, who were suing for monetary damages from an auto accident that had injured Paul Chernak. The civil lawsuit languished for several years without going to trial. At one point, Ralston’s clients appealed to him for financial help in paying their bills. Ralston advanced them $22,000 from his trust account.

When you’re a lawyer, the rules of professional conduct require that you be diligent in representing your client and not let a case drag on for an unreasonable period. You are especially required not to commingle a client’s funds with your own and not to advance money to a client from your trust account. The State Bar of Georgia filed a civil complaint against Ralston more than two years ago over these issues, and the case has been a political quagmire ever since.

Ralston, you see, is not just a lawyer—he is also one of the most powerful men at the state capitol. He presides over the House of Representatives, the legislative chamber that originates the state budget each year.

This matters to the Supreme Court, because the justices are on the verge of getting a new judicial building that would be constructed on the site of the old state archives near the capitol. Money has been

allocated in previous state budgets for the site plans and demolition of the archives building, but the largest portion of the project has yet to be approved. It will cost an estimated $100 million or more to erect the judicial building, an amount that Ralston and other House members will have to agree to put in the budget.

I’m sure the Supreme Court justices would enjoy having a shiny new building for their offices. Ralston, for his part, doesn’t want to be bothered with a politically embarrassing penalty for violating the rules of professional conduct.

You can see where this is going. The justices ended up giving Ralston one of the lightest penalties possible for his transgressions: a public reprimand. Ralston will not lose his ability to practice law, even though he had indicated he would accept a threemonth suspension. It is worth noting that the maximum punishment Ralston could have potentially received was disbarment.

He got a tap on the wrist instead.

The justices cited several factors to justify their decision: Ralston had no previous disciplinary record; there was no selfish or dishonest motive in his actions; he fully disclosed what he had done; he was cooperative with the court; and he had a “lengthy career in public service as a legislator and legislative leader.�

Ralston did make a substantial financial sacrifice as a result of this affair. He won’t ask for the $22,000 to be paid back, and he gave up any fee he might have claimed from eventual settlement of the Chernaks’ case.

This is the way the political process works. If you’re a powerful politician, you will often find yourself on the receiving end of some nice gifts and perks. None of them could be nicer than the one Ralston received from the Supreme Court. f

The Problem With Pellets Are Athens-Area Wood Pellet Plants Clean Energy or Polluters?

That’s not quite a fair comparison, said Ben Jackson, a professor at the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. “The issue is kind of confounded by the fact that when you’re using coal, you’re taking a resource out of the ground, and you’re creating CO2 as a result,� he said. “If you’re creating CO2 with trees, that was above ground already, and it’s being recycled back into the trees eventually, so it’s kind of like comparing apples to oranges.�

The Dogwood Alliance, an Atlanta-based nonprofit dedicated to saving and sustaining forests, is organizing Athens residents against the three facilities. A company called E-Pellets recently acquired the old Louisiana Pacific particle-board factory off U.S. Highway 441; it has secured permits from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and is awaiting a Jackson County Industrial Development Authority vote on a $110 million bond issue. Another company, Georgia Renewable Power, is building woodpellet plants in Madison and Franklin counties, although the Comer plant has been delayed for unknown reasons, according to the Madison County Journal.

Since 2013, the wood pellet industry has grown exponentially, with the European Union responsible for the bulk of consumption, seeing it as a green alternative to coal.

But according to the Dogwood Alliance and another environmental nonprofit, the Citizens Climate Lobby—which held a

Jackson said that, although woody biomass comes from different types of trees, pine forests grow back in 27–30 years, resembling mature forests after just 12. “People are saying they’re taking solid trees, but that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense,� Jackson said. Landowners can get

higher prices for their lumber from companies who are making higher-value products like furniture and buildings. “When you harvest a stand of trees, there’s always residual biomass left over [shavings, limbs, small trees, etc.], and that, for the most part, has been a target material that people have used to gather and use in pellet production,� Jackson said.

Aside from the environmental issues, wood pellet production poses threats to the communities where pellets are made, said Allie Halpert, the Dogwood Alliance’s Athens organizer. Health risks such as cancer, heart attacks, increased childhood asthma attacks, birth defects and strokes have all been linked to emissions from the facilities. “The biomass power plants poison their communities by emitting volatile organic compounds,� Halpert said.

While there are two sides to the argument, and research isn’t far enough along to have a complete understanding of the impact of the wood pellet industry, one thing is pretty clear: “It’s a highly inefficient source of energy,� Zucchino said.

Jackson doesn’t disagree. “Wood pellets are not ever going to supply a huge percentage of the power need of the U.S.,� he said. “They might in a little place like England, where they do a lot of imports.

Here in this country, there’s not enough woody biomass to make a huge contribution to our needs. It can be part of it, but it’s not going to be a complete answer.� f

Entertaining the Kids Plus, a Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Museum in Athens?!?!

By Kristen Morales news@flagpole.com Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that time of the year again, which means youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re probably planning for a visit from family or friends. And at some point, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll probably want to get out of the house.

So, now what?

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re reading this column, you probably already have kids, and you probably already have an idea of places around Athens where you can take them. So most of this column is for you to clip (or otherwise share) for a friend who always comes to you with a desperate plea of â&#x20AC;&#x153;What can I do in this town when my sisterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kids come to visit?â&#x20AC;?

But before I start suggesting ideas, I have to share a plan for something Athens has long needed. This is big, people, and really cool: an Athens childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s museum.

Dubbed â&#x20AC;&#x153;Little Athens,â&#x20AC;? itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the brainchild of Leigh Ellen Magness, a local licensed clinical social worker. For years, she has toted her kids to childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s museums across the country, picking up ideas here and there, and has always dreamed of a place of our own here in Athens. Recently, the conversation changed from â&#x20AC;&#x153;What if?â&#x20AC;? to â&#x20AC;&#x153;When?â&#x20AC;? and she now has a business plan assembled and is filing for official nonprofit status.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Little Athensâ&#x20AC;? because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty much what sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s envisioning: a miniature version of the local businesses we love so much, giving kids a place to do grown-up things in their own space.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever taken your kids to INK (Interactive Neighborhood for Kids) in Gainesville, you might be familiar with the concept, although instead of having more generic businesses (a vetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office, a hair salon, a bank), Little Athens will feature businesses specific to Athens.

As a licensed play therapist, Magness says play is the natural language of kids, so the concept allows kids to do what they

do best while also acting out roles typically reserved for grown-ups.

Huston’s painting “Botanical Garden 46, Carolina Jessamine” takes an abstract approach in depicting South Carolina’s state flower, which grows as clusters of bright yellow blooms clinging to a slender vine. Undertones of complementary purple help the yellow pop, while blocks of color lead the eye towards familiar leaf shapes. The painting is part of a series that now totals 64 paintings, each of which focuses on a different plant native to Athens or the larger Piedmont region. Though common to the area, these plants are often overlooked; Huston’s work draws attention to their beauty and importance.

After reading a self-help book in her early 30s that recommended watercolor painting as a form of therapeutic self-expression, Melody Croft began creating art whenever time permitted. She became a full-time artist in 2009 after retiring from a 30-year career in teaching, and now works almost exclusively in oils, occasionally incorporating collage into her paintings. Croft has joined ATHICA and three other art organizations within the past several months, hoping to grow artistically and professionally and meet some kindred spirits along the way.

Believing that art can be an impetus for change, many of her narrative portraits approach the complexities of race, age, gender and culture. Her contribution to the gallery’s exhibition, “Selfie-ish,” is a vibrantly hued scene of a young woman taking a picture of herself beside a homeless man. Oblivious to the inappropriateness of her actions, she’s preoccupied with her own experience—one that will appear within the endless scroll of social media and be evaluated by likes and comments from followers.

“Technology certainly has allowed our social interactions to reach global proportions, yet in so doing, it seems ironically to have also become a barrier to actual human contact,” says Croft. “The ultimate message of the piece is that we need to stop looking at each other on our individual tech devices and get out into the world and actually communicate.”

Fellow educator Luke Graves also became a member of the gallery in hopes of making connections with other artists in the community. After graduating with a BFA in sculpture from UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art in 2009, “Phantasie Op. 1 No. 2 (Old Crow Tree)” by Cheryl Washburn he worked at Camp Twin Lakes and created art-based programs for children living with illnesses or Rowlett, whose narrative works have inspired her to delve disabilities. 16 Things We Loved About Athens Music in 2016

the middle of December. Trees are bare, temperatures are falling, and it’s getting dark at like 4 p.m. Which means… we’re nearing the end.

Of the year, we mean! Although 2016 wasn’t the cuddliest, most lovable year in recent memory—and, let’s be real, 2017 ain’t exactly killing it on the reasons-to-be-hopeful front—in the world of Athens music, at least, there has been plenty to celebrate.

Indeed, we’ve been heartened by steady upward and outward creative movement over the past 12 months.

From specific bands and albums to concert experiences and broader scene developments, here are 16 things we loved about Athens music in 2016.

3. Famous Locals Repped Us Well

General consensus on 2016 ranges from mild malaise at best to downright despair at worst, but Athens music had some stellar accomplishments in between all the moments where hope seemed lost. In our case, the hard work of several established bands paid off, ushering in a new wave of projects that began to stake their own claim around town.

Label signings, releases and plenty of touring for groups like Mothers, Muuy Biien, New Madrid and Arbor Labor Union left a void to be filled back home by a plethora of upand-coming talent, including Wanda, Neighbor Lady, Linda and Juan de Fuca. [Andy Barton]

Throughout 2016’s fantastically fucked-up election season, some of Athens’ highest-profile musicians gave us reason to be proud. Drive-By Truckers preached progress with their marvelous, mutinous American Band album, continuing to risk backlash from their mostly white, mostly Southern audience and even making the political-television rounds to talk protest music. And R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe and Mike Mills were among the most outspoken celebs when it came to taking on Trump. [Gabe Vodicka]

1. Women Ruled the Scene Although women have always had a presence in the Athens scene, 2016 saw a powerful surge of female-fronted or majority-female acts, all of which kicked serious ass.

Mothers received international success and recognition for their tender, folksy debut, When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired. Nihilist Cheerleader ruled the punk scene with tons of high-energy performances around Athens and all over the Southeast. Jianna Justice basically became a household name locally, reviving a dormant twee-pop scene with tracks like “Twenty” and growing creatively with each release and intimate performance.

Although the newly formed Pansy has only played a few shows, its deconstructed glitter-punk sound identifies the group as a formidable addition to the scene.

Don’t just take our word for it. Local labels and tastemakers recognized the influence of women, too. MOEKE Records’ 2016 Summer Singles compilation included specially recorded tracks by artists such as Jianna Justice, Wanda, Kissing Booth, Lingua Franca, Neighbor Lady and Monsoon. Pity Party hosted Nihilist Cheerleader, Potted Plant, Outer Spaces and tons of other female artists at its garden venue while accompanying each with professionally shot video.

Women have thrived in our predominantly male music scene for years, but it seems they’re finally getting the spotlight they deserve. Local female artists are enjoying more airplay on community broadcasting platforms, more honest and objective publicity in the press and a more involved audience.

There’s no doubt women still face hardships when it comes to the industry, and there’s still work to be done in Athens. But if 2016 is any indication, local ladies are just getting started. [Maria Lewczyk]

4. It Got Weird(er) 2016 was one of the best years on record for Athens’ noiseniks and envelope pushers. Renewed senses of community and creativity flourished, as did sublime collaborations.

Aside from several scene stalwarts stepping up their game, there were notable and new figures on the Athens scene, like Sean McDonald (MMM Sound) and Ryan Rudder (Echo Constant), as well as the live outlet of The World Famous’ Experimental Mondays series. [Gordon Lamb]

5. We Celebrated a Milestone The fact that Wuxtry Records is still slinging vinyl downtown after four decades, with luxury condos now the norm and Urban Outfitters having moved in essentially next door, is reason to celebrate. Celebrate we did with a Flagpole cover story and blowout party at Little Kings in September featuring legends The Woggles and an appearance from author Rodger Brown, whose Party Out of Bounds reminds us that Athens will always be a creative hotspot, no matter what the real-estate market says. 6. Love Was in the Air Two of Athens’ strongest singer-songwriters are also Athens’ strongest power couple. Erin Lovett, who performs as Four Eyes, specializes in folky pop with a strong emotional bent. Patrick Brick, aka Futo, plays confessional electropop. Over the past few years, their releases have shaped and informed one another, creating a nearly unmatched run of consistently great music. Their 2016 albums are their strongest to date. In Futo’s Greatest Hits’ dedications, Brick refers to Lovett as “the only living person I write about,” and her presence is felt in every brief ounce of brightness that shines through the often dark album. Brick is listed as a co-producer on Welcome to Earth, and the collaboration resulted in a new level of quality for Four Eyes.

7. Bleeps and Bloops Abounded Everything seemed to click and coalesce this year for the overlapping worlds of dance, electronica and remix culture.

Vaporwave, which reared its head fully in 2015, became less of a branding tool and more of a point of reference. No one led this charge more than the Plus 100 Records label, with its solidly global reach. Others of note included the genre-shifting Astroshaman/Bills Clinton and the deeply informed EDM compositions of DJ Variant. [GL] Shervin Lainez

8. The Past Blasted Back Three of the most pleasant surprises of the year came courtesy of local groups that were thought to be either dormant

or long gone. In May, we got a self-titled album from postrock warriors Japancakes, the band’s first record in nine years and its first-ever to feature vocals. Of course, there was Cinemechanica’s triumphant return in September.

And last month saw the release of Post, the first album in 25 years (!) from Classic City mood-rockers Seven Simons.

9. It Became Cool to Dance Again Normally, a band plays a few songs, people nod their heads, and that’s about it. Something about 2016 inspired more upbeat jams, more bouncing around and more group grooving. Much local music released this year—see The Quiet Pack’s “Let’s Make Some Plans” or Scooterbabe’s “Scooterbabe 2”—had stronger beats, catchier riffs and simpler, more repetitive choruses, making it easy to dance and sing along with, even if you were hearing it for the first time. We Grooved With the Groceries Set among a vegetable garden run by students in the Athens Land Trust’s Young Urban Farmers program, the West Broad Farmers Market in 2016 wasn’t just a charming alternative to that other Saturday market, but a chance to discover a variety of musical acts, like one-man band David Court, teenage rockers Cheese Dream, gospel singer Zeke Turner and the Palms of Fire drum circle. Booked by market manager Sallay Jabbie and her team, each provided a moodenhancing shopping soundtrack and a great start to the weekend. [Marc Schultz]

11. Athens Returned to Its Roots The ideological gap between roots-based Americana and mainstream country music continued narrowing at a rapid rate in 2016, keeping hope for widespread notoriety alive for veteran local acts.

UGA’s student-run radio station has long been known as one of the best places listeners can be exposed to local music. But the station is also a breeding ground for that music. In 2016, WUOG’s young staffers had a notable impact on the year in local sounds.

Operations Director Marshall Moore took his Hairy Confucius hip-hop persona and morphed into the more mature and engaging The Quiet Pack, releasing his excellent debut EP, Steam Zone, this month. DJ Hale Woods joined the ranks of experimental rock band Swamp. Local Music Director Frances Newton debuted her new punk band Pansy earlier in the year, a group that hasn’t released much material yet but has already gained a reputation for its occasionally destructive live shows.

Also part of Pansy is DJ Conor Lacey, whose solo project VHS Collectors Club put out its first EP, Amateur Hour, this summer.

There’s also DJ Jianna Justice, who made a name for herself last year with two excellent EPs. 2016 saw her turning her self-titled project into a full band and releasing a few singles before heading to study abroad in Oxford.

Justice was also a major player on the debut album from Scooterbabe—which itself is led by former music director JJ Posway—providing backing vocals on nearly every track. 2016 has been a great year for local music, and WUOG has had one hell of a helping hand in getting us to this point. [NK]

former Buffalo Clover singer Margo Price and Atlanta-based Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke. These artists toiled in obscurity for years. Like DIY punks, they toured nonstop, perfecting their craft instead of hobnobbing with industry types. This path of most resistance intrinsically breeds the type of earnest, heartfelt songs craved by country purists.

One local taking the long way is Daniel Hutchens, a 30-year veteran of the Athens scene known best for his work with rockers Bloodkin. A solo album, The Beautiful Vicious Cycle of Life, arrived in the spring, and exhibits much

“It’s like gumbo—there’s so many different ingredients out here, and we’ve got a little bit for everybody,” local rapper Larry “LG” Gresham says of his hometown.

Athens has become a hotbed of hip hop over the past few years. With the hip-hop mecca of Atlanta sitting just over an hour away, many artists have historically flocked there in search of recognition and support.

But 2016 saw the local scene grow. This year, some of Athens’ best put their heads together to create and promote their music.

“The unity has started to really come together, unlike in past years,” LG says.

“People are really starting to work together, and it’s really getting serious. There’s a lot of artists coming out with different stuff, and new artists hopping on the scene. It’s getting exciting.”

That unity was on display at the Athens in Harmony event at The Foundry on Oct. 30, where artists like Squalle, Blacknerdninja and Repunza performed and the community came out in droves to build positive relationships following social unrest nationwide. The event also exposed the lighter side of hip hop.

“In the past, I know hip hop wouldn’t have been anywhere near that event,” LG said. “But the fact that hip hop was able to participate in that event was big… It just kind of opened eyes to a whole new audience. It was love, and when those guys went up there and they performed, those people were really rocking with us… To me, it opened their eyes to another side of hip hop.”

Many local rap artists feel they are on the cusp of putting Athens on the map nationwide. Young stars such as Yung’N Restless, Tony B, Dictator and Profound, plus budding collectives like We’re Weird and Space Dungeon, made noise in 2016 and are names to watch heading into 2017. One performer, in particular, is destined for good things, says LG. “Yung’N Restless is like a silent assassin right now,” he says. “He’s just killing everything.”

of the roots-based charm that’s made Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell household names. His gritty approach is a little bit Haggard and a little bit Springsteen, so it should appeal to Americana fans as well as his preexisting rock audience.

Hutchens isn’t the only local artist whose mastery of roots-based sounds deserves a listen at a time when Chris Stapleton somehow seems less out of place on a popmusic awards show than Queen Bey. Caleb Keith and the Calaveras and Grassland String Band are two more groups whose 2016 releases would sound at home on a playlist of recent and real country. [Bobby Moore]

14. Killick Killed It It wasn’t exactly an atypical 12 months for local composer Killick Hinds, whose creative fecundity has always been mind-boggling. But his work in 2016—which spanned 14 releases, all available on Bandcamp—seemed newly energized. From the hip-hop-influenced Swerve Inversion—a team-up with poet Life the Griot—to the Henry Kaiser collab Xenosynchronicity II, Killick’s turbulent music provided a fitting soundtrack to a dark and stormy year. 15. House Party Had a New Meaning Of all the venues in town, none captures the same feel as the Pity Party Social Club. Founder Taylor Chicoine has created a safe, calm space away from the hustle and bustle of downtown where people can enjoy intimate sets by their favorite local artists. Pity Party also records videos of the performances, capturing the down-to-earth interactions between band members and their audience. Athens’ musicvideo scene is on the come-up, and Pity Party is blazing the trail. [ML]

Locals Got Global In addition to the continued presence of groups like the Argentine-influenced Athens Tango Project, gypsy-jazz masters Hot Club of Athens and Afro-rock outfit The TaxiCab Verses, the Soundcloud set led a world-music revival, with local “zine label” Echobass Records at the forefront. Recordings from reggae collective Razzi King, deepelectro mystery man Yung Yang and dancehall DJ Cabbage Looper incorporated global sounds while remaining rooted in the Classic City underground. collection out titled Emoji Made Muse. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easily the most readily accessible music heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s released while still being on the outer fringes for most listeners. All the music here was created with drums, vocals and â&#x20AC;&#x153;thrift store keyboards.â&#x20AC;? The whole thing runs just over half an hour, and while itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not

divided into separate tracks, there are select moments of pause that feel like track breaks. I dunno. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OK, but the thing thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bugging me about this is while McDonald has reached into the pop milieu and drawn out tasty hooks and solid rhythmic devices, he has defiantly refused to structure

them into anything discernible. Too Little, Too Late?

Despite Recent Rain, Drought Is Still Hurting Athens Farmers

The concept is Americanized Chinese food executed with good ingredients and for a palate capable of detecting subtlety. Many have compared the restaurant to the closed Cinco y Diez, which did somewhat of the same thing for Mexican food, but the difference is that Cinco was working with easier (i.e., authentic, varied) material, whereas Donna Chang’s is trying to spin straw into gold. Peeled and sliced into rectangles, the cucumbers are dressed with vinegar, garlic, fresh herbs (one of which appears to be shiso leaf) and a dusting of Szechuan pepper, all of which combine to highlight the cool, faintly floral flavor of the cukes while turning them into something more mosh pit than tea party. The salad performs a similar trick, both bringing out the nuances of its various brassicas (the gentle grassiness of lacinato kale, the funky undertones of fried brussels-sprout leaves) and forcing them into something ballsy and delightful,

with plenty of lime and fish sauce to wake you up.

Desserts are well priced at $4 for a goodsized bowl of fancy ice cream, fro-yo or sorbet. The five-spice ice cream, with an apple compote, is more conventionally “holiday,” but the green-tea ice cream, decked with shards of wonderful housemade fortune

cookie, is the better choice. Donna Chang’s is busy, but the staff can turn tables quickly without pushing people out the door. It’s open for dinner every day but Wednesday and does take-out.

CHARM: The other side of the coin is Koyla Sizzling Grill and Hookah Lounge (2024 S. Milledge Ave., 706-215-9555), which is not big on creature comforts but has a lot of cheap, tasty offerings on its large menu.

Sandwiched between a small grocery store and the hookah lounge of its name (no smoke makes its way into the restaurant, which is perfectly family-friendly), Koyla means “charcoal” in Urdu, and the restaurant grills much of what it offers.

The menu ranges across India and Pakistan, but is a bit more northern than southern, with a surprising number of vegetarian options. Your food will come on a Styrofoam plate, and you may have to fetch your own plasticware, but you will not care if your mouth is full of batata vada, an appetizer of mashed potatoes filled with sautéed, spiced veggies, then battered and fried. Classics like chicken korma are not fancy (slopped into a little Styrofoam bowl and plated next to a mound of rice and, with some dishes, naan), but they are well-spiced and filling.

The snackier things are superior, however, including the chicken 65, morsels of chicken dyed bright red by chiles, spiced with ginger and garlic and fried crisp. Perhaps the most unusual dish on the menu (only in that I don’t think it exists elsewhere in Athens), is the kabob roll, a sort of gyro made with a paratha bread that enfolds either chicken or paneer tikka, sliced onions and a fresh, zingy green chutney.

Koyla has much more to explore, if it can do enough business to stay open, with a good array of desserts and soft drinks that include Pakistani cola, nonalcoholic malt drink, lassis, coffee and chai. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day, with hookah only in the evenings. f

Moonlight Will Move You Plus, a Crime Thriller, Holiday Hijinks and a Sorkin-esque Drama

Taylor-Johnson’s Ray. Tony tracks down these men with the help of a cop played by Hollywood’s resident crazy man, Michael Shannon, who, as always, is a beast.

The crime thriller within the relationship drama is thrillingly conveyed, high-class exploitation. Ford displays Palahniuk-level satire with the opening art show of jiggling, overweight, naked women before settling in to tell a revenge tale worthy of Jack Ketchum. Most revenge flicks are not as lushly photographed, with an A-list star like Adams at her most fashionably gorgeous.

Gyllenhaal continues to show impressive range as he matures. The Venice Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner is one of the year’s best and most intriguing films.

MISS SLOANE (R) Miss Sloane certainly has some Aaron Sorkin in its DNA, as evidenced by the initial dialogue between cutthroat lobbyist Elizabeth Sloane (Jessica Chastain) and her team, which includes Alison Pill, late of Sorkin’s HBO serial, “The Newsroom.”

Like Sorkin, the film’s ideological message is far from hidden. Sloane, its poster child for the corruption of our political system, uses her evil powers for good, as she seeks to convince the Senate to pass a major gun-control bill. As the film from Academy Award-nominated director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) continues, the machine behind the scenes begins to show.

First-time screenwriter Jonathan Perera’s script is well, if obviously, orchestrated.

It is filled with October surprises for both sides of the aisle. Still, the film successfully rouses with its finale, which is worthy of ’70s social cinema greats.

As a multiple Oscar nominee, anything starring Chastain and released this time of year automatically generates awards talk, but as entertaining and intelligent as Miss Sloane is, its only truly memorable quality is Chastain’s performance. The film will appeal to anyone suffering from Sorkin withdrawal; too bad that sort of preaching to the choir rarely makes much noise outside its echo chamber. f
