Where There’s a Means…

CCSD Superintendent Candidate Impresses, and More Local News

By Blake Aued news@flagpole.com Ordinarily, showing up for a job interview an hour late might slightly decrease your chances of being hired. But Demond Means had a good excuse.

His flight from Milwaukee to Atlanta was delayed four hours (not to mention the traffic caused by the I-85 bridge collapse).

In a testament to how much interest the community has in the new Clarke County School District superintendent, about 250 of the 300 people who made it out to far-flung, transit-less Whitehead Road Elementary School on Apr. 3 stuck around to hear him talk.

Many in the audience were suspicious.

The school board had promised a public forum with three finalists, but by the previous Friday, that had turned into a forum with a sole, as-yet-unnamed finalist. As it usually does when there’s a lack of transparency, gossip filled the information vacuum.

(My favorite rumor was that the new hire would be John Barge, the Republican former state school superintendent who once misspelled “governor” while running for governor.)

Monday morning—just hours before the forum, and after some prodding from school board members—board President

Charles Worthy announced Means as the sole finalist. His resume, frankly, was a bit underwhelming, headlined by eight years as superintendent of the relatively small (3,700 students, compared to CCSD’s 13,600) Mequon-Thiensville school district in a very white, very affluent suburb of Milwaukee.

Nonetheless, board members insisted that Means—who was raised by workingclass parents in inner-city Milwaukee and graduated from public schools there—is well equipped to tackle the challenges facing a majority-minority district in a community with a crushing 50 percent child poverty rate. “He grew up like me,” Ovita Thornton said. “I can relate to him. I can relate to his family. He did not always have a silver spoon in his mouth. So he can relate to the kids we are concerned about in Clarke County.”

Means described himself as someone who’s committed to social justice and marginalized students, even challenging the board in his interview to go “all in,” according to BOE member John Knox. “I firmly believe our most marginalized children deserve the most attention,” he said. “Those children who don’t have an advocate in the

superintendent’s office or other places are the ones who need us the most.”

One of the reasons Means felt drawn to Clarke County, he said, is the opportunity to help minority and low-income students.

Although Mequon-Thiensville is 78 percent white, Means outlined some of the things he has done for minority students there, such as putting math and literacy specialists in every school, and taking African-

American boys to college campuses and black-owned businesses to learn academic skills and gain exposure to role models.

He also led a statewide initiative to close Wisconsin’s achievement gap, the widest in the nation.

Fireworks will return to downtown this Fourth of July (technically, Saturday, July 1). Athens-Clarke County commissioners approved $63,150 in funding for the fireworks show at its Apr. 4 meeting, although some of that expense could be paid by private sponsors. Even Commissioner Jared Bailey, whose district includes Bishop Park, the site of past Star-Spangled Classics before the celebration was cut from the county budget in 2008, acknowledged that downtown is the better site, citing its plethora of parking and restaurants.

However, Eastside Commissioner Andy Herod and Atlanta Highway Commissioner Jerry NeSmith said they’d like to see the show move around to other locations in future years. (Georgia Square Mall took over the fireworks in 2014 and 2015.)

Commissioners Allison Wright and Melissa Link proposed the county’s hotel-motel tax as a potential source of permanent future funding.

The commission also approved a $75,000 loan for the Athens Neighborhood Health Center, which is facing a $200,000 budget shortfall and was recently forced to close its Jefferson Road clinic, one of the three locations. The ANHC treats low-income, Medicaid and uninsured as well as privately insured patients. f

CCSD’s 2018 budget will probably be set by the time Means takes over, so it falls to Interim Superintendent Jack Parish and board members to find a solution to a $3.8 million shortfall in the upcoming fiscal year.

Ongoing state austerity cuts ($1.3 million this year), rising insurance costs, an unexpectedly high contribution to the teacher retirement fund and state-mandated 2 percent raises are to blame for the shortfall, Chief Financial Officer Larry Hammel explained at an Apr. 5 work session.

In past years when it’s run a deficit, especially during the recession, the district has used reserves to balance the budget.

That fund balance—leftover money that’s rolled forward year to year—stands at about $23 million, but Hammel cautioned that the district should keep reserves of at least 15 percent of its $147 million budget.

“My magic’s about out, guys,” he said. The proposed budget already includes 2 percent cuts to all areas, and more cutting would be difficult, Hammel said, since 67 percent of funding goes directly to the classroom (not even counting other essentials, like buses and building maintenance). Neither is raising taxes an option, since school property taxes are capped out at 20 mills.

The board is expected to approve a tentative budget Apr. 13, followed by public hearings May 9, 16 and 23, and a final vote June 8.

Mequon-Thiensville officials have said they want to keep Means, but his hiring moved forward Apr. 6, when the CCSD board formally named him the sole finalist after a half-hour private meeting. That vote triggered a mandatory 14-day waiting period, and assuming no dirt on Means emerges in the meantime and MequonThiensville doesn’t make him a Godfather offer, the board will vote to officially hire him May 4.

failed Opportunity School District—when folks started Googling him. Republican state lawmakers mandated that Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele identify poorly performing schools and turn them over to private operators, and Abele tapped Means for the job.

As Means explained it—and his explanation is backed up by Milwaukee news sources—he weathered incoming storms from both sides, refusing to bow to pressure to actually turn those schools into charters, and also unable to reach an agreement with the Milwaukee school district on a plan that left local control intact, so he resigned rather than do something to harm public education. “I walked away from that position when I became aware it wasn’t about kids anymore; it was about politics,” he said.

“Public education is under attack,” school board member Greg Davis said, and Means will defend it.

“I’ve gotten a sense of true courage [and] conviction,” board member Linda Davis said. “I believe he will stand for children and stand against anyone who comes after him for that.”

Former Superintendent Phil Lanoue’s name never came up, but the way Means described himself sounded like the antiLanoue, which might be just what Athens needs to rebuild trust after the Cedar Shoals sexual assault last year caused a substantial portion of the community to lose faith in CCSD leadership. He is a collaborative leader, he said, a listener and a motivator who seeks input from all parties before making a decision, and will support teachers while demanding excellence from both staff and students.

“You can only have equity if you have high expectations for every child,” he said.

“I believe every child can learn at an amazing rate that will surprise their teachers and, in some cases, even their parents.”

Means agreed with a questioner who asked if too many students are “pushed out” of schools and into the Ombudsman program for those with disciplinary problems.

“The more we can keep them all under one roof and serve their diverse needs, the better,” he said. “I know it’s a real harsh word to use, but you’re segregating those kids when you send them to an alternative place.”

And he said he would work to produce more “homegrown teachers” as a way to make the district’s faculty more diverse.

His answer to a question on technology drew applause. Lanoue’s signature “oneto-one” initiative to give every student a laptop or tablet and transition away from textbooks has been criticized by some parents. While praising the program, Means cautioned that technology is only as good as teachers’ training to use it. “The one-toone initiative is an amazing use of funds in technology for learning,” he said. “I also say, ‘Technology is a tool.’ It’s a tool for learning. If the focus is on technology, we have a problem we need to step away from.”

On a personal level, Means sought to allay concerns that, because he’s spent his whole life in the Milwaukee area, he might not stay in Georgia for long. He has a fouryear-old in pre-K in the Mequon-Thiensville district, and said she’ll become a Southern belle. “What drew me to Clarke County is this is a place I can raise my daughter,” he said.

There’s never been an off-year election like the one happening in the 6th Congressional District, where voters will pick a replacement for departed congressman Tom Price.

The whole political world is watching what happens here, and is sending money on top of that. This is a campaign where more contributions have come from outside the state than from Georgia residents.

The special election has taken on national significance because it’s the first real referendum on the Donald Trump administration, which has been in office for less than 100 days.

The 6th District has usually been a GOPleaning area, represented by Republicans like Price, Johnny Isakson and Newt Gingrich. But in last November’s balloting, Trump carried the district by less than 2 percentage points. Democrats spotted an opening when Price decided to leave office to join the Trump administration, and the candidate who first stepped forward with a “Make Trump Furious” message was Jon Ossoff, a documentary filmmaker and former congressional aide.

The 30-year-old Ossoff, who looks more like a computer geek than a politician, has become the beneficiary of a flood of money from anti-Trump activists. He has raised $8.3 million in contributions, nearly twice as much as the other 17 candidates combined. The bulk of his donations have come from outside the state, with a big assist from the liberal website Daily Kos. He’s using that money to blanket the airwaves with commercials and to get people canvassing potential voters.

There has been a strong pushback from Republicans, who account for 11 of the 18 candidates on the crowded ballot. The Congressional Leadership Fund in Washington, which has ties to House

Some of these attack ads ring a familiar bell with Georgia voters: They try to link Ossoff with Osama bin Laden, based on the fact that Ossoff’s film company was once paid $5,000 by the Al Jazeera media network.

Saxby Chambliss tried a similar tactic when he was running against Max Cleland in the 2002 Senate race, running ads that accused Cleland of having connections to bin Laden.

Those attack ads worked for Chambliss; will they work again 15 years later?

Out of that field of GOP candidates, the polls indicate that the frontrunners are former secretary of state Karen Handel, former state legislators Judson Hill and Dan Moody, and former Johns Creek councilman Bob Gray. Handel and Hill have raised just under $500,000 apiece in contributions, but the other Republicans in this race are digging deeply into their own pockets to fund their campaigns. Moody has raised a total of $2.02 million, but $1.92 million of that is his own money. In other words, 94.7 percent of Moody’s campaign cash is coming out of personal funds. Gray has raised $717,500, with $500,000 coming out of his own pocket. Gray is providing 69.7 percent of his campaign account. Some of the lesser candidates are also putting huge amounts of personal money into their campaigns.

Democrats hope that anti-Trump sentiment is strong enough to give Ossoff, who’s now at 40–43 percent in the polls, just over 50 percent of the vote on Apr. 18. That would enable him to win it without a runoff. Republicans assume that Ossoff won’t get that majority and will be pulled into a June 20 runoff, where the GOP vote would consolidate against him and enable whoever makes it into the runoff to win. It’s an amazing story either way. f

This would be a very bad outcome for people living in Seattle or Portland, but it would not actually be a nuclear holocaust.

The destruction of the North Korean regime would bring American military power right to Chinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own border. You might reasonably ask: So what? This is the 21st Century, and what matters strategically is the big, lethal long-range weapons (like nukes), not the whereabouts of a few American infantry battalions. Quite right in theory. Not necessarily right in practice.

During the Korean War, when American troops were operating very close to the Chinese frontier in late 1950, the Chinese regime sent troops in to save the North Korean regime, and succeeded. The scenario this time, with nuclear weapons already being used on both sides of the North Korea-South Korea frontier, would be different, but it could be even more dangerous.

China has lots of nuclear weapons, and delivery vehicles, too.

Trump is the fourth American president to be faced with the challenge of North Korean nuclear weapons, and none of them has found a safe and effective way of dealing with it. But all the others avoided making open threats of violence, because that would probably just make matters worse.

Of course, Trump may just be bluffing.

In fact, he almost certainly is. But if your bluff is called, you have to go through with your threat or accept being humiliated. The Donald doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do humiliation. f

then the United States would use the tools at its disposal (the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most powerful armed forces) to accomplish the same goal.

This does not necessarily mean that the United States would launch a large nuclear attack against North Korea. If you are really serious about carrying out a â&#x20AC;&#x153;disarming strikeâ&#x20AC;? that destroys all of North Koreaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nukes, you probably should do exactly that.

(You never get a second chance to go first.)

But maybe the U.S. Air Force would promise that â&#x20AC;&#x153;precisionâ&#x20AC;? non-nuclear weapons could accomplish that goal, and maybe some gullible people would believe it.

It would still turn into a nuclear war in the end, unless American â&#x20AC;&#x153;surgical strikesâ&#x20AC;? eliminated every last one of North Koreaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nukes at the same time. Kim Jong-unâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regime would find itself in the position known in nuclear strategy as â&#x20AC;&#x153;use them or lose them,â&#x20AC;? and it is hard to believe that it would not launch whatever it had left.

The targets would be in South Korea, of course, but probably also American bases in Japan. Maybe even Japanese cities, if North Korea had enough weapons left. The regime would know it was going underâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; the United States would not take this huge risk and then leave it in powerâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;so it would take as many of its enemies as possible down with it.

North America would probably not be hit, because Western intelligence services do not believe that Pyongyang has ballistic missiles that can reach that far yet. (But

Tiny Houses Are Terrific A Solution to Athensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Affordable Housing Problem?

By Paula Loniak news@flagpole.com Over the past few years, it has become harder and harderfor many people in the workforce to afford the rising cost of housing. Athens-Clarke County did a workforce housing study last year that showed housing costs have increased while incomes have not.

There are many locations in Athens where a community of about 10â&#x20AC;&#x201C;20 tiny houses could be developed. There would be a monthly fee, and all residents would be required to help maintain the property.

Now, hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the beauty of the plan: The residents would be of all ages, from all walks of life, but all people who want to simplify their lives, as well belong to a community with people interacting with each other and looking after each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;such as seniors helping with childcare for working parents, while those parents help with household chores and errands in return. Picture a com-

munity garden, green space, a clubhouse for meetings or parties that wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fit into a tiny house.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s holding this plan back from being approved? ACC doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow houses of less than 1,000 square feet in singlefamily zones, or 500 square feet in multifamily zones. UGA even has a course where the students build a tiny house, but when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re completed, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re moved elsewhere.

Tiny houses are affordable for many people who wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be able to buy a house in Athens or even afford the skyrocketing rents that landlords are demanding. UGA studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; parents, in many cases, are willing to pay whatever price is asked in order for their offspring to live wherever their hearts desire.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now common to see rents of over $2,000 a month for a house thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing special except for its proximity to downtown. And growth downtown has mainly been gigantic student-housing developments and hotels. The people who actually live and work here, the people who keep the town humming, are now being forced out so the students can live wherever theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like.

I can contribute to the incomes of local merchants since I can afford to go out to eat, go hear some live music and buy some items at some of the locally owned shops downtown.

When I suggested a tiny-house community for a location along Lexington Road, people who live on the Eastside applauded.

Whenever I tell someone that I live in a tiny house, they often say that they would love to do that.

It shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a difficult thing for the ACC government to figure outâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been done dozens of times across the country, including other progressive communities like Seattle, Portland, OR and Sonoma County, CA. Donald Trump and War Inspire Income-Tax Resisters

Nippert grew up on a farm with 40,000 turkeys in the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Ohio. He wanted to escape the life of a farm boy as quickly as he could. Nippert had big plans: Become an engineer, move to the city, and buy a red Corvette. That was 1967. Forty years later, he and his wife, Linda, live and work on a 100-acre, community-owned raspberry farm in Appalachia. He spends his days puttering around in a stained-glass shop that he runs with his neighbor. There’s no Corvette in his garage. Nippert’s life was fundamentally altered by his decision to break the law. He hasn’t paid his federal income tax, in full, since 1973.

Nippert is one of approximately 8,000 Americans who openly choose to contest paying their full income tax owed to the federal government.

They don’t consider themselves to be criminal tax evaders; they prefer to be called war tax resisters.

President Trump’s refusal to release his income taxes has fueled interest in tax resistance for some anti-Trumpers. “Take a look at Trump. Did he reveal his taxes? No,” says Jay Sordean, a war tax resistance counselor in Berkeley, CA. “I am sure Peter Smith he is hiding lots of crap. He is in this for himself, and I am sure his taxes reflect his beliefs.”

But for longtime resisters like Nippert, the decision not to pay taxes doesn’t depend on who is in the White House.

It is a matter of personal conscience.

As a child, Nippert attended services at the Church of the Brethren. “When I was a kid, I knew my religion and stuff, and I was involved in a youth group, but I didn’t think too heavily about what was going on in the world or what that had to do with my religious beliefs. I knew things were going on in the world, but they didn’t seem personally relevant,” Nippert says.

But then, as for so many, the Vietnam War created a crisis of conscience for Nippert. He was lucky to get a draft deferment from the war by enrolling as a student at Ohio University and then transferring to Ohio State. The war

plodded along, and Nippert lived a parallel life as a Buckeye.

He pledged a frat, but the brothers decided he wasn’t Beta Theta Pi material.

“Looking back on it, I think they made the right decision,” he says. “That was a time when everything was changing. I was letting my hair grow a little longer, but the frats were still pretty conservative. There were weird things they didn’t like about me. I didn’t hold my cigarette the right way. And you know, really, I was just a farm boy.”

Around the same time, someone gave him a copy of Joan Baez’s memoir, Daybreak.

“Her book affected me a lot in terms of thinking about issues of pacifism, and made me think about what I learned about non-violence from Church of the Brethren,” Nippert says.

In 1968, Nippert started hanging out at political meetings at Ohio State, where he learned more about draft resistance and nonviolent protest. “I grew up being taught to think for myself, and once I started going to meetings and hearing people talking and hold strong opinions passionately, it kind of opened me up,” he says. “It caused me to ask, ‘What do I really believe in passionately? How am I supposed to live my beliefs?’”

Initially, he got involved with a campus group that was doing draft counseling for people who wanted to escape to Canada, and helped them fill out forms so that they could register as conscientious objectors. But Nippert’s own conscience continued to gnaw at him.

One night in 1969, Nippert broke into “the Shoe,” Ohio State’s football stadium. It was midnight. He climbed all the way to the top bleacher and sat there, alone, for a few hours. Enveloped by the all-American scene, Nippert thought about his relationship to his country.

“I wanted to make the right decisions. I am not, and never have been, anti-my-country. Not at all,” he says. “I love my country. I thought that if I am not truly a pacifist, I should go register for the draft and serve. I am not going to walk around saying I am a pacifist if I’m not willing to make a personal sacrifice. I am not a chicken. I can’t be just trying

to get out of going to war. I have to really be for something.

Sitting up there in the stadium alone, I came to my decision. I decided that I couldn’t kill anybody.”

But there was more.

“If I can’t kill someone, can I pay someone else to kill for me?” he asked himself. “I decided that I couldn’t do either, and I really needed to live as a pacifist.”

Two months later, Nippert dropped out of Ohio State and was called up for the draft. The draft board required documentation to validate his conscientious objector status. Nippert’s dad wrote him a letter of support. He had been a fighter pilot in World War II, captured and starved by the Nazis as a POW. In the letter, his father wrote, “As a farmer, we learn that each of us needs to plow our own furrow.”

Nippert’s petition was approved, and soon after, he stopped paying his taxes.

What Is War Tax Resistance?

War tax resisters believe that we should be able to decide for ourselves when, if and how much we pay in federal tax based on our beliefs. They think we should able to decide how much we pay, or if we pay at all, when we don’t think the government is going to use our money to our liking.

The IRS clearly does not agree. IRS Code 6702 requires the agency to maintain a list of “frivolous filings,” which, according to the agency, “describes and responds to some of the common frivolous tax arguments made by those who oppose compliance with federal tax laws.” The IRS can fine a filer up to $5,000 for attaching a letter of protest or writing directly on a tax form about any of the frivolous filing issues. War tax resistance is on the list.

“One doesn’t like to hear the word ‘frivolous’ about an action we take so seriously, but I know it isn’t intended as a diss to us in particular,” says Ruth Benn, the national coordinator of the National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee (NWTRCC, pronounced “New Trick”), a group founded in 1982 in response to nuclear proliferation. “Since they started the frivolous filing penalties as a result of war tax resistance, a lot of us did an action we called ‘cabbage patch filing.’ People filed dozens of 1040s instead of filing just one. The goal was to slow down the system.”

One person’s frivolity is another’s life passion. Some people refuse to pay their first $5,000 in federal tax because

of what they refer to as a “Black Tax,” a version of selfimposed reparations for the 40 acres and mule promised by General Sherman at the end of the Civil War. There are some people in the states’ rights crowd who believe the Ninth Amendment protects them from the overreach of the federal government’s ability to collect income tax. For some odd reason, some filers claim that if they write the phrase “nunc pro tunc” on their 1040 form, they won’t have to pay income tax.

“Some people who don’t pay taxes are just fruitcakes, in terms of the reasons they are using to avoid paying taxes,” says Peter Smith, a war tax resister from Indiana. “You know, like things that are never going to work. But the people who are out there who are honestly conscientious objectors and have legitimate reasons, we respect them and we say go for it.”

Military spending is the most common issue. NWTRCC publishes an annual analysis of the federal budget, in which they determine that about 50 percent of the federal budget goes toward current military spending, debt on past wars, upkeep of the nuclear arsenal and funding for homeland security. War tax resisters, like Nippert, use this figure as a guidepost when paying (or not paying) their federal income tax. But under Trump, military spending is poised to spike.

“Interest in tax resistance has been unusually active because of Trump’s election,” says Benn. “We saw a huge jump in our web stats since the inauguration. It is tax time, and we have a president we don’t like. I mean, we aren’t like the Women’s March, with hundreds of thousands of people coming out. But around the country, we are finding more interest in our workshops, where there will be 20 people attending instead of the usual two. Local networks that don’t usually contact us have been unusually active. Some of the groups out there who are anti-Trump have come to us for ideas.”

While the current political climate may have created a spike in interest in war tax resistance, the war tax resisters interviewed for this story made it clear that their opposition isn’t grounded in partisanship, but is based on a life of pacifism inspired by flashpoints like the Vietnam War, the 1980s nuclear arms race, American military involvement in Central America and the more recent wars in Iraq.

Like Nippert, resisters tend to start out as activists and protesters in anti-war movements and then, ultimately, they ask themselves, “If I am so against war, then why am I paying for it?” “These are all conscious people who have chosen to stay out of the system,” Benn says.

Smith, the tax resister from Indiana, served in the military for four years in the early 1960s. “During the Vietnam War, I knew that what the government needed to fight the war was money and people. I knew that I could resist with my money, and so I did,” he says.

For others, the catalyst was even more personal. Peace activist Cindy Sheehan, best known for her monthlong 2005 tent encampment protest outside President George W. Bush’s Crawford, TX ranch, lost her son Casey to the Iraq war in April 2004 and stopped paying federal income tax.

“After Casey was killed in the Iraq War, I looked at my then-husband and said, ‘That is the last time I am paying taxes. I am not filing or paying taxes to this government, because they took something from us that they can never repay,’” Sheehan says. “For years, I had funded the murder of so many people, including my own son.”

She has ongoing federal liens against her for any future assets she may acquire, but the magistrate in her IRS hearing took a sympathetic stance. “The judge looked up at me at the end of the hearing and said, ‘What you’ve done sounds like a real reasonable response to something that happened to you that was so unreasonable,’” she recalls.

Many tax resisters view what they do as a reasonable response to an unreasonable situation. But the 8,000 war tax resisters don’t necessarily believe that they will stop all war. Not any more, at least. Most of the people I spoke to for this article are now in their late 60s; they started their resistance wide-eyed and bell-bottomed, intending to starve the “war machine.” Now, most admit that’s not going to happen.

“I don’t want to totally give up on change, but I don’t expect it in my lifetime,” Benn says. “What we do is going to someday turn things around. Like any conscientious objector, I think I have a role in showing another way. Through my tax resistance, I am trying to show what is important.”

War tax resistance is idiosyncratic; there isn’t a prescribed way to do it. Resisters do all they can to make it difficult for the IRS to collect what is owed. But for most, being a war tax resister translates to creating a simple, asset-free life.

Nationwide, NWTRCC affiliate groups offer counseling to those interested in war tax resistance. Participants are guided to reflect on what they believe and articulate what they are looking for from their resistance. Then they commit to the course of action that is the best for their life situation and their tolerance for risk.

Sordean, the volunteer war tax resistance counselor in Berkeley, CA, is self-employed and doesn’t have withholdings taken directly from his paycheck. He also lives below the taxable income limit. Sordean files his 1040 tax form every year, but he doesn’t include a check. He sends a letter of resistance with his form.

In the 1990s, he got creative and sent palm-sized helium canisters that “looked like little cruise missiles” attached to his 1040, along with a letter of protest to the IRS, his senators and the Clinton White House. (Warning: Don’t try this in the post-9/11 era.)

War tax resisters who do receive a paycheck often hike up their withholding exemptions and end up having little or no money taken from their pay. Some people file and withhold $10.40 and attach letters demanding a decrease in military spending, in an act of what is referred to as “symbolic resistance.”

Like many resisters, Nippert put all of his assets in his wife’s name so the house can’t be seized by the IRS. He doesn’t make enough money on the raspberry farm or in the stained-glass shop to pay personal income tax.

Ruth Benn Every war tax resister I talked to donates the money that should have been paid in taxes either to charities or one of the 50 funds, such as the People’s Life Fund, that redistribute the money for “lifeaffirming purposes.” Ann Barron, a resister since 2014 from San Diego, says, “I love paying taxes, but not for war. I pay my taxes, but not to the U.S. government.”

The war tax resisters view what they do as patriotic. The openly commit civil disobedience, spawned by a love of country.

Risks of Resistance Tax resistance isn’t easy. Most resisters live in fear and experience financial uncertainty. The IRS wants the money it is owed, and agents will do everything they can to get it, including placing liens on assets, seizing bank and retirement accounts and garnishing wages. For many resisters, the hassle and risk is worth the sacrifice.

“It’s been worth it for me,” Smith says. “One of the things about war tax resistance is that you have control over yourself. You can say no to the government, and that’s not something many people can do, because they feel kind of forced into paying. It is empowering for me.”

Nippert doesn’t worry so much about the IRS coming after him. “If you can be sympathetic to the IRS, it is getting much, much harder for them to collect taxes, even for big amounts of money, because the federal government is giving them less and less to work with,” he says. “I know that I am low-priority when they can’t even collect from people who owe a lot.”

Still, the collection letters from the IRS can be relentless and filled with intimidating legalese. “I get the collection letters, and they are a little scary,” Barron says. “One of the hardest things about tax resistance is that it is difficult to get the right legal information. My anxiety about the IRS was the first hurdle for me to get over in deciding to be a war resister. But now, I don’t feel fear. I made a decision

to be public about what I’m doing. I feel a deep connection between what I believe and what I am doing.”

What about jail? In 1846, in the most famous case of war tax resistance, the author Henry David Thoreau was jailed for refusing to pay six years’ worth of back taxes because of his opposition to slavery and the Mexican-American War. Since then, only a few dozen Americans have been jailed for war tax resistance. “Jail for war tax resistance is a myth,” the NWTRCC’s Benn says. “The IRS doesn’t come and take you away, they just want their money. They don’t want people in jail.”

Tell that to Joseph Olejak, a chiropractor and natural healer from Chatham, NY. Joseph started withholding his taxes from the government in 1992. “At first the letters came more frequently from the IRS, and the threats became more regular, until eventually someone from the IRS showed up and said, ‘This is a civil matter now, but it will become a criminal matter if you don’t pay,’” Olejak recalls.

Armed agents ended up storming Olejak’s office and seizing his computers and records.

In 2013, Olejak was sentenced to serve weekends in county jail because he owed $242,000 to the federal government. The charges against Olejak resulted in a felony conviction that caused him to lose his chiropractor’s license.

For 26 weeks, Olejak worked as a bookkeeper and advised clients on weight loss during the weekdays.

On Fridays at 6 p.m., he checked into the county jail, changed into his jumpsuit and was fed “food that was so disgusting you couldn’t even call it food. It was a concoction of soy and meat-like substance over noodles. It was so disgusting, sometimes I just fasted.” He checked out of jail each Sunday night and returned to diet coaching.

Any regrets about his choices?

None.

“Somewhere, somebody is not going to have a smart bomb dropped on their head because I withdrew some money from the system,” Olejak says. As part of his plea deal, Olejak agreed to pay taxes in $100 monthly installments when he has the income to pay, and he was put on five years’ probation.

Aside from his highly aberrational jail sentence, Olejak suffered financial ruin. He can no longer practice as a chiropractor in New York because of his criminal felony. Still, he sees himself as successful. “There are all kinds of success,” he says. “There is ethical success and financial success, and the two are not necessarily the same thing. This is not something that happened to me out of the blue. I made the choice. I made a conscious choice not to participate in war.

I accepted the consequences and hoped that they would not be awful.”

For Nippert, it’s turned out a lot better.

“I don’t have any doubts about what I’ve done,” he says.

“I think probably my overwhelming feeling is that this isn’t a direction I would have gone on my own, but it’s really turned out to be great for me.”

Every morning, he walks the three-quarters of a mile to his glass shop with his dog Candy next to him. He spends his days in the shop listening to Emmylou Harris, X Ambassadors and Van Morrison. He and his wife, a recently retired elementary special-education teacher, usually have an unfinished puzzle on the coffee table that they work on together in the evenings after dinner. They are grandparents to twin 4-year-old boys.

He’s got a birthday coming up.

“People ask me what I want for my birthday. I don’t know. I mean, it is not like I wish I had more money to buy more and more things,” he says. “When I was younger, I wasn’t concerned with money so much, I was just in love with a Vette, you know? But now, I’m just pretty happy. I am happy with the woods and my grandkids. I think the land is awfully healing.”

But his son married a woman whose family owns a local car dealership. They usually have a few Corvettes in the garage. Maybe he’ll take one on a drive for his birthday. f

Farm Freeze False Spring Hits Georgia Agriculture Hard

By Lauren Baggett news@flagpole.com When the thermometer hit 29 degrees recently following a streak of warm and sunny days, most of us around Athens were grumbling to each other about how finicky the weather can be, how just when you thought it was safe to pull out sandals and shorts, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hit with one more wintery blast. For our local farmers, however, the conversation about unpredictable weather is a more serious one.

Spring, it seemed, had come early. Very early. That, coupled with an unexpected cold snap, will affect the timing and variety of produce we see at our local markets and restaurants, as well as profits for our local farmers. These unusual conditions can tempt farmers to deviate from the usual planting schedule.

Typically, farms wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t plant spring annuals until after mid-April, when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safe to assume that the last frost has come and gone. In a recent message to Collective

owner Susan Shaw. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We do not bank on one or two crops, or one or two income streams to meet our income needs, no matter how successful a crop or income stream has been in the past,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The spring-like weather prompted some crops to begin to sprout or flower, only to be cut down when freezing temperatures returned. Shawâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s asparagus suffered. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every one that poked its little head out of the ground for three days died, and then the following week weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve not seen one single asparagus emerge,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Farfourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more established cropsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;tomatoes, squash and cucumbersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;survived the cold snap, protected under row cover in a hoophouse. Younger crops didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fare as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have radishes that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t germinate and lettuce that is growing a lot slower than normal,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The cold definitely slowed down growth, but this coming weeks warmth should make up for that.â&#x20AC;?

Though experience tells her to wait and not plant early, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the familiar signs of spring [are] awakening the gambler in me, the risk taker,â&#x20AC;? she wrote. The payoff is an early harvest of fan favorites.

Having the first tomatoes at the spring market is one way farmers can attract people to their stands, Collective Harvest Manager Rachel Waldron says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You want to be able to have the first items of the season change, because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what really excites people,â&#x20AC;? she adds. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re often not as excited about the items theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen for weeks and weeks.â&#x20AC;? Being able to offer a variety of produce earlier in the season boosts interest in CSA memberships, too, says Waldron.

Of course, sometimes the gamble doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pay off, as with any business. Even a carefully planned and budgeted season can go awry because farmers can only do so much to control production. Weather, disease and pests all impact crop yields. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why local farmers diversify, says Hickory Hill Farm

Like most Georgia farmers, her blueberries took a hit. State Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black toured the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s blueberry crops in mid-March, returning with a grim report for South Georgiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;as much as 80 percent was wiped out.

Though crops should bounce back, a delay in their harvest can translate to smaller profits at the farmers market. If seasonal items come in late, that means more competition. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Generally, if you can bring a crop to market first, you are likely to sell out, but if you come later in the season, you might be taking it home because the market is flushed,â&#x20AC;? says Farfour.

Ultimately, the warm weather will support a speedy recovery of market staples (so you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be without kale for long), but you may see some variability in how early or late certain items are available. Strawberries, for one, are likely to hit the markets earlier this season, and are sure to be plentiful.

Two Events and a Reissue Campaign Honor an Athens Legend

T

here’s been an influx of interest this year in Athens music legend Vic Chesnutt, signaled by a pair of upcoming local events and a local label’s ongoing vinyl reissue campaign.

The folk-rock singer-songwriter and guitarist ascended from playing downtown clubs in the 1980s to earning critical acclaim and maintaining an international profile from the mid-’90s until his death in 2009. Along the way, he influenced others who would become local success stories.

Among the Athens bands elevated by Chesnutt was Elf Power, which collaborated with him on the 2008 album Dark Developments. “I think it’s great that Vic’s music is still being celebrated,” says Elf Power frontman Andrew Rieger. “He’s such a legendary songwriter—the best to ever come out of Athens, in my opinion—so I’m glad that other people recognize that… The collaborative album that we recorded together and the subsequent few years spent touring the world together are definitely among the high points of my musical career.”

Many of Chesnutt’s contemporaries and artists he inspired will celebrate his life at the Songs of Vic Chesnutt event, happening this weekend at the 40 Watt Club. Former Star Room Boys frontman Dave Marr helped organize the two-night concert along with the venue’s talent buyer, Velena Vego. Marr says around 40 artists will perform in total, including Five Eight, Thayer Sarrano, the Pylon Reenactment Society, Bain Mattox and T. Hardy Morris.

Proceeds will go to Nuçi’s Space, which promotes mentalhealth awareness for local musicians.

The springtime celebration continues Thursday, May 11 at The Foundry with the unveiling of the winner of the first Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award. The Classic

City Rotary Club founded the award, with support from Chesnutt’s family, to recognize talented songwriters in the Athens area. (The public nomination period closed Apr. 7, and a panel of local music-industry judges are currently deliberating.) In addition to bragging rights, the winner will take home a $1,000 cash prize. Proceeds from the Foundry show will also benefit Nuçi’s Space, along with supporting the Rotary’s various service projects.

In a press release, Classic City Rotary Club Presidentelect Ellen Bryson says the award ceremony, featuring performances by finalists and other local musicians, including

Asking around town for stories about Chesnutt, it’s clear that his peers are as likely to share something hilarious as they are to rightly praise him as a songwriter and performer—a trend that will hopefully be reflected in the stage banter at the 40 Watt. “His dark and nasty sense of humor was something that I reflect back on fondly,” Rieger says.

“At soundchecks, when checking his vocal mic, he would improvise the nastiest, most hilarious songs, a summary of which would not be fit to print in your publication,” Rieger adds. “He did this for our amusement, and I greatly appreciated it, as it was a welcome break from the stresses of touring and traveling.”

Such tales extend well beyond state lines. Texas-based folk and country singer Ray Wylie Hubbard remembers

Chesnutt as a kindred spirit, beyond musical similarities.

“We kind of hit it off because we were both backstage being snarky,” Hubbard says. “He was such a great, great writer. I have a lot of respect for him, and we loved just sitting back and having fun.”

The third commemoration of Chesnutt’s music happening this year is a reissue campaign. Athens-based New West Records is focusing on several releases from Chesnutt’s time with California label Texas Hotel. They’ve already unveiled colored vinyl represses of Chesnutt’s Michael Stipe-produced 1990 debut, Little, as well as 1993’s Drunk and 1995’s Is the Actor Happy?, and the 1991 landmark West of Rome is getting a limited double-LP release for Record Store Day on Apr. 22. In addition, a couple of albums originally issued by New West, 2003’s Silver Lake and 2005’s Ghetto Bells, are slated for release in May and June, respectively.

From local events to far-reaching reissues, 2017 is shaping up to be a banner year for Chesnutt’s legacy. The attention comes at a seemingly odd time, unattached to any noteworthy anniversaries of the late artist’s milestones.

But based on the enthusiasm among event planners, as well as loved ones’ hilariously vulgar memories, those in Chesnutt’s still-relevant sphere of influence don’t necessarily need to look to their calendars for a reason to laugh, cry or celebrate in his name. f

Into Focus Ian St. Pé Cleans Up and Hits the Road

D

uring his decade with Atlanta punks Black Lips and his time collaborating with Athens’ T. Hardy Morris in Diamond Rugs, Ian St. Pé gave audiences what they wanted on an international scale.

Now he’s living in Nashville and plotting a return to the spotlight with a solo project, known simply as Saint Pé.

Saint Pé has slowly taken shape since before its namesake parted ways with Black Lips in 2014. Back then, St. Pé was planning a side project called Fixed Focus, a name he used instead as the title of his debut album, issued Apr. 7 by Ernest Jenning Record Co. The album was recorded in 2015 with friends from Georgia, including current Nashville resident Ian MacDonald (ex-Turf War). Last year was spent putting the remaining pieces in place—a record deal, a booking agent and a backing band featuring performers from Nashville and Chicago.

The long build toward Fixed Focus kept St. Pé off the road after a decade of touring.

The plus side was ample time to further polish his songwriting and recording skills. But for a seasoned entertainer, those positives cannot replace the roar of a crowd.

“I have a studio at my house now, and I do enjoy sitting at home and recording,” he says. “Also, I have a publishing company,

[Rough Trade], so my songs have already gotten in TV shows like ‘Billions,’ which I think is on Showtime, and ‘Sex&Drugs&Rock& Roll.’ I do like the publishing side of things. Being in Nashville is a good spot to do that. But man, I play rock and roll music. That’s called ‘get up, get out, and get some.’ My life is good, but I’m ready to get back on the road.”

Now St. Pé is back on tour—older, wiser and more sober. Despite his former band’s hard-partying reputation, now “I don’t really partake in alcohol or drugs,” he says.

“I’ll tell you, that happened near the end of my Black Lips career. I enjoyed it, because you spend so much time getting loaded that when you get on stage and you’re fucked up, it’s fun. But then it becomes normal, so now when I play sober, that’s like being fucked up. It’s wild, man. I see colors I’ve never seen before, and I feel the souls of the 300 kids just hitting me harder. I’ll tell you what, being sober is the new fucked up.”

has the musical licks and intestinal fortitude to power through upcoming tours— limited to a week or two each because of service-industry jobs—in hopes of earning the fiscal success that could make Saint Pé a full-time career.

“Playing music is a lot more than the notes you hit,” he says. “It’s the dead space in between the notes—but it also entails being able to get up every day and get into a van and go somewhere. There’s a lot more to music than playing. Rock and roll is what happens the 23 hours in between shows.

Can you do it? A lot of people can’t. I like living out of a suitcase and touring the world, but it’s not for everybody.”

As for the new album, there’s some history in its making that has more to do with

the Grand Ole Opry House than Die Slaughterhaus. St. Pé and his wife own a log-cabin home that was originally built for Roy Acuff.

“He lived here from 1945–1950, so when he discovered Hank Williams in 1946, he was living here,” St. Pé says.

“That right there alone is huge in my book. I recorded the record in the room Roy used to record his radio show in, and my control room is Roy Acuff’s office.”

St. Pé knows how to excite audiences in different cities, after going from playing intimate venues in his early days with Black Lips to touring the globe. That’s why he’s willing to sprinkle beloved songs by past bands into his current live sets—even teasing a possible Athens-only Diamond Rugs reunion with Morris on Apr. 13 at the Caledonia Lounge. for Taylor, and his project Hello Kitty Kat is turning into a fully realized thing. He plays and records everything himself, and each of the 12 tracks available has the feel of something revisited continually. While a certain amount of Taylor’s songs recall his time in the then-rising (“then” being the early-to-mid 2000s) Athens band Iron Hero, his tastes have a decidedly 1990s alt-rock flavor. That said, Taylor is at his best when he allows these tastes to flow through him as influences (“Saturday,” “Crosswalks”) rather than directives (“Trick”). Check it out at hellokittykat.com.

BEFORE IT WAS EASY: Athens filmmaker Christopher Childs spent a lot of time at punk and hardcore shows in the early 2000s with an eye in his video camera’s viewfinder. Thanks to him, there’s a nice pile of videos from that time slowly becoming available online. Although a large amount of the footage centers on the Atlanta scene—hence the name Atlanta Punk Archive—he’s got videos from Athens bands Guff, Exit 86, Service Industry and Hunter Gatherer on deck. It’s been a treat to sit and watch through these old tapes, and hopefully it’ll be a treat for you, too. FAMILY AFFAIR: Brother and sister duo Jessie Gerke and Brad Gerke (Summer Sonics) released a new song as Gerkey a couple of weeks ago named “End All, Be All,” and while it’s ostensibly from an EP of which no evidence exists, you can still hear the single. Now, it’s a truism of the music universe that anything billed as some sort of family-based duo is gonna be awful. But this isn’t. It’s a little on the long side, clocking in at almost five minutes, but it’s a tuneful acoustic-electric song, and the pair’s voices blend nicely. In particular, Jessie’s voice sounds a lot like Four Eyes’ Erin Lovett’s, and Brad’s complements this in a nice, non-overpowering way. NOISE ANNOYS: Killick Hinds has struck again—as he will likely continue to do—but this time he’s all alone, and this step away from his constant collaboration is a nice one. Last week, he released a five-track record named never stop lovin, and it features just himself, his guitar and, as he puts it, “a bit of computer magic.” It begins gently enough with the highly lulling “duck and steer,” which acts as an open door for a somewhat darkened hallway. The creaky drone of “Sun Imbue Lands” and outer-space celestial dust of “epip(-h) any” are swept away quickly by the sharp, nearly piercing exploration of “tiptap.” It all returns to gentleness with closing track “refract,” and while I could have used a WUOG 90.5 FM’s 10 Most-Played Recordings few minutes more of this Mar. 29–Apr. 4 particular track, it’s a nice bookend for this short 1. Lyndon House Presents Juried Exhibition Plus, a New AthFest Artist and Mural at Food for the Soul

This year’s guest juror was Susan Krane, who most recently held the position of executive director at the San Jose Museum of Art for eight years. In the past, she has served as the director of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and the University of Colorado Art Museum, as well as the curator of modern and contemporary art at the High Museum of Art. Holding multiple degrees from Harvard Business School, University of Colorado and Columbia University, she has authored several publications and organized over 60 exhibitions.

Krane whittled the pool of entries down to 162 works of art for this year’s juried exhibition, offering a tremendous number of landscapes, portraits and abstracted images to get lost in.

The series closes out on Apr. 27 with Jaquelynn Faass, Erin McIntosh and Duane Paxson. Faas, a painting and drawing student who will graduate from UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art this semester, depicts a peaceful, smiling older woman reflecting in nature. McIntosh, an assistant professor of art at the University of North Georgia,

contributes an abstract painting in her signature style of combining biomorphic and geometric forms. Paxson, whose sculptures often incorporate steel, fiberglass, textured resin and ceramics, is similarly influenced by the patterns and mysteries of nature.

In addition to the artist talks, a selfguided tour and family-friendly gallery activity is available. The “42nd Juried Exhibition” will remain on view through Saturday, May 6.

Mural for the Soul: Currently underway, a new mural located on the exterior wall of Food for the Soul on West Broad Street seeks to contemplate the relationship between police and the public. A panel reflecting the past and present depicts protestors holding signs with slogans such as “Equal Rights for All” and “Voting Rights Now” near officers keeping them in line. An optimistic scene from the future shows a much more unified crowd holding up peace signs.

A project of UGA professor Brian N. Williams’ freshman seminar “The Current State of PoliceCommunity Relations: Problems and Prospects,” the mural reflects cooperation between enrolled students and representatives from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the Clarke County School District Police, the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office and the UGA Police Department. It should also come as no surprise that Broderick Flanigan, an artist and activist who has organized several mural projects in the past, will lead teenagers and other community residents in painting the mural. An official dedication ceremony will be held later this spring.

AthFest Artist: Every year, AthFest Educates selects a different visual artist to create a cohesive theme for the AthFest Music and Arts Festival in June and the AthHalf half marathon in October. The nonprofit recently announced that its committee has chosen graphic designer Daniel Fell, whose designs will incorporate bright colors and local references into visuals that convey the festival’s spirit. The promotional artwork will be featured on merchandise, advertisements, event signage and online at athfest.com. f

Grumpy Old Men Gone Wild

Why remake a classic people remember all too well when there are mostly forgotten, midlevel flicks like the 1979 Martin Brest film starring George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg lying around? This heist comedy, directed by Zach Braff (grr, unless we are talking about “Scrubs”), is less than pretty good but better than bad thanks to Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin.

After experiencing a bank heist firsthand, a retired steelworker, Joe Harding (Caine), decides he and his pals—Willie (Freeman), whose kidney is failing, and Albert (Arkin), a failed saxophonist—can pull off the very same crime. When the three retired co-workers’ pension goes belly up after a financial restructuring, they put Joe’s plan into action and plot to rob their bank with the assistance of a criminal named Jesus (John Ortiz, last seen in Kong:

in case you could not recall—Braff’s third directorial effort will not salvage his indie cred, but could establish him as an option for bland, focus-grouped “fun,” were anyone to remember Going in Style as a Zach Braff film. But it’s unlikely they will remember Going in Style at all, much less who directed it. Those who do recall it are likely to confuse it with Last Vegas or any of the plethora of flicks that make up the ever-growing Grumpy Old Men Gone Wild subgenre.

SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE (PG) I did not think I would ever consider the 2011 liveaction Smurfs movie to be the height of this franchise, but that film feels masterly compared to the new, animated Smurfs feature. RIP Jonathan Winters, the voice of Papa Smurf in The Smurfs and The Smurfs 2, though he is replaced by the resolute Mandy Patinkin. That’s some smurfed up smurf, yo.

Skull Island). These desperate old men are not criminals and only want to take back what they are owed. Nonetheless, they must evade the cops, represented by Matt Dillon’s FBI Agent Hamer.

Nothing is particularly original about this flick, though it remains relevant, given our post-Great Recession economy. Hidden Figures writer-director Theodore Melfi’s script succeeds more thanks to the chemistry of Caine, Freeman and Arkin, whose delivery is the film’s MVP, than on its own puny strengths. Rob Simonsen’s music is way beyond subtle, and Kenan Thompson’s teeny appearance delivers the most laughs.

Nonetheless, Caine, Freeman and Arkin have enough combined chemistry and years to earn at least 90 minutes of our attention.

Still, the movie’s biggest act of thievery is Caine’s pilfering of Tom Wilkinson’s American accent for the climactic bank robbery. Ann-Margret still looks terrific, even if she is just recreating her Grumpy Old Men role nearly 25 years later. Wrap your head around the fact that a 52-year-old AnnMargret was being wooed by two 70-yearolds in that movie; at least Going in Style’s matchmaking is more age-appropriate.

After burning all his Garden State goodwill on the Kickstarter for a sophomore feature that no one remembers—it came out in 2014 and was called Wish I Was Here,

Wilson’s cartoonish evil wizard who likes to eat little blue people. Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock”’s Kenneth, ably replaces the more poignant Anton Yelchin as Clumsy Smurf.

The rest of the voice casting is pretty spot on, with Joe Manganiello as Hefty and Danny Pudi as Brainy. (Gordon Ramsay’s Baker Smurf may be a bit on the nose.)

The Lost Village feels like a 1986 cash grab that would have been released to compete with GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords, which, my mother is happy to tell you, sucked. The bulk of this movie revolves around the difficulties of Smurfette being the only female Smurf. Then they discover the Lost Village, with a host of blue ladies voiced by Julia Roberts, Michelle Rodriguez, Ellie Kemper, Ariel Winter (“Modern Family”) and Meghan Trainor.

More female Smurfs may be good for the perpetuation of the Smurfs as a race, but it does not make a difference in stopping Gargamel’s harassment, which is the main problem facing the Smurfs.

The main problem facing audiences is that this third Smurfs feature, the most faithful to its source material, is the least cinematic. Still, Smurfs are Smurfs. Kids are going to love it as much as any incarnation of Peyo’s tiny creations. Unfortunately for children of the ’80s, nostalgia is not intensified through blue-tinted lenses. f

During the museum’s annual Alfred Heber Holbrook Memorial Lecture, Cole will speak about “the creative practice as spiritual pursuit,” with connections made between history, religion, the environment and the arts. Students talk about how bad she smells. She’s also really disorganized, and her office looks like a trash heap. I think this is terrible, and feel that if she’d just work a little bit on her hygiene, folks wouldn’t feel the need to criticize everything else about her. Also, I think it’s just extremely unprofessional. I went into the bathroom in our building today after her, and the smell was incredible. Can you recommend a way for me to try to address this with her?

Sit down with her and ask her to list all of the multilevel marketing campaigns she’s been involved in.

Ask her what they all have in common— like having to make a large initial buy-in to a “great business opportunity”—and ask her how many have actually made her rich (none, I assume). She’s gonna need to see the writing on the wall herself to stop going for those schemes.

I’d also recommend putting a lot of energy into helping her find steady work outside of home. Since she seems to enjoy selling stuff so much, point her in the direction of a dope boutique that’s hiring. If she likes the challenge of commissions and sales goals, many boutiques have those in place.
