Reparations for Linnentown

ATHENS CHURCHES STEP IN TO HELP RIGHT A WRONG

Members of two Athens churches distributed checks to descendants of Black families whose homes were taken by the City of Athens and the University of Georgia in the 1960s—a first of its kind attempt at reparations, according to organizers.

Predominantly white Oconee Street United Methodist Church and predominantly Black Ebenezer Baptist Church West formed a group called Athens Reparations Action and worked together to raise $120,000 for the families of 10 former Linnentown homeowners. They distributed checks to family representatives during a June 23 ceremony at Ebenezer.

“We know no amount of money can repair the harm that was suffered, so what we are offering today is a token of honor and respect,” said Alys Willman, co-chair of Athens Reparations Action with Chaplain Cole Knapper.

their removal.

While the Georgia constitution prohibits direct cash payments from the government to individuals, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission unanimously passed a resolution in 2021 apologizing for its role in destroying the neighborhood, committed $2.5 million to reparations in some other form and appointed a Justice and Memory Committee to recommend how to spend that money. Half will go toward down payment and home repair assistance, and the other half will fund a Black history center housed in the new Classic Center arena.

“History will tell that Athens, Georgia, and the entire world began to change three years ago,” Knapper said.

“ People of faith do not have to wait for government to act to create local solutions.

Organizers said that, to their knowledge, it was the first attempt to privately raise funds for reparations for past harm done to Black Americans. “It isn’t being done anywhere in the country the way we are doing it here in Athens, Georgia, and we are very proud of that,” Knapper said.

“People of faith do not have to wait for government to act to create local solutions,” Knapper continued. “We don’t have to wait on the University of Georgia. We don’t have to wait on the Board of Regents. We don’t have to wait on our elected representatives in the Georgia legislature. We don’t have to wait.”

When the city government used eminent domain to seize property in Linnentown on behalf of UGA to build dormitories on Baxter Street, Black homeowners were paid far less than white homeowners. Many Black residents were forced into public housing or bought new homes in parts of town that did not experience such explosive growth in value. UGA geography professor Jerry Shannon calculated that Black Linnentown homeowners lost a total of $5 million of intergenerational wealth due to

UGA has thus far refused to contribute the other $2.5 million and has not accepted responsibility for the destruction of Linnentown. The University System of Georgia even tried to block renaming a portion of Finley Street near campus Linnentown Lane. The university drew rebukes from several speakers at the Ebenezer event.

“The past actions of the University System of Georgia were a true example of racist and discriminatory actions—a pure example of one group’s willingness to use their power over another group,” said former Clarke County School District superintendent Xernona Thomas, whose grandparents lived in Linnentown.

But “what the devil meant for harm, God turned to good,” Thomas said, describing how her family moved up from “a wooden home with outdoor plumbing” to “a brick home with modern appliances.” Thomas, a three-time UGA graduate, said the improvement in her family’s circumstances allowed her to “matriculate from a place of hate.”

Another Linnentown descendant, Geneva Johnson, said she plans to press UGA President Jere Morehead further. “I’ve got a meeting with him,” she said. “We ain’t through yet.”

Marie Johnson, 89, struggled to her feet to deliver her remarks. “I chose to stand, the way my father stood,” she said. Johnson said she was planning to remodel her parents’ home for them before it was razed. “I thought, ‘Who could be so cruel to take it away from them?’”

The movement to recognize Linnentown began in 2018, when Joseph Carter, then a PhD candidate at UGA, found records related to the neighborhood’s demolition and got in touch with former residents, including Hattie Thomas Whitehead, who later wrote a book and a musical about the neighborhood. While the story was already known among native Black Athenians, Carter and Thomas Whitehead brought it to the attention of a broader audience through local media and subsequent coverage by national news outlets.

“It was hid,” said Bobby Crook, who was 11 when Linnentown was razed. “They didn’t want anybody to know… But the truth comes to light. You have to believe that.”

Athens Men Sue Over Bail Bill

Two Athens residents won the first round in a federal lawsuit seeking to stop restrictions on posting charitable bail for

indigent defendants accused of minor crimes.

U.S. District Court Judge Victoria Marie Calvert issued a temporary restraining order June 28 blocking Senate Bill 63 from taking effect July 1. The Republican-backed law—passed by the state legislature and signed by Gov. Brian Kemp earlier this year—adds to the list of crimes that judges are required to set cash bail for, rather than release defendants on a signature bond. It also limits charitable groups like Courtwatch and all other non-bail bondsmen from bailing out more than three individuals per year.

The plaintiffs, Steve Williams and John Cole Vodicka (an occasional Flagpole contributor), volunteer for the Courtwatchers program at Oconee Street United Methodist Church that advocates for defendants who are held in jail awaiting trial because they can’t afford even small amounts of bail for minor charges. They are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia and the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown University. The lawsuit, filed June 21, argues that SB 63 violates Williams and Vodicka’s right to express their religious beliefs, among other Constitutional rights. f

Southern Fare With Flair

NEW HIGH-END COMFORT FOOD RESTAURANTS

PREACHER GREEN’S (1995 Barnett Shoals Road, 706-215-9079, preacher greens.com): If you’re nostalgic for Five Star Day Cafe, which closed in 2013 but before that spent a good 15 years serving Southern food with a casual hipster gloss, Preacher Green’s is your new favorite restaurant. If you got here within the last 10 years and don’t know what we’re reminiscing about, you might like it just as well.

Opened by Athens natives and Cedar Shoals graduates Ted Lahey and Paul Allen in the former Turtles (and most recently Pizza Hut) in the corner of the Green Acres shopping center, it manages to hit its marks pretty well: a little cheffy but not too much, healthy in some ways but not in all, polished, on top of details, fast and well priced. Some people freaked out a little over the lengthwise sliced fried okra when it opened, but just because something is recognizable as a vegetable doesn’t make it not Southern food. There’s an appreciation for the classics here, but a recognition that a lovely beet salad with sunflower seeds and a sherry vinaigrette can sit alongside them. The space is narrow, rather like the downtown Five Star was, and you have to navigate through it to find the register where you order, tucked around the corner. Grab a laminated menu, figure out what you want, chat with the folks behind the counter, then get a seat and your food will be out speedily.

the picture. The menu isn’t particularly innovative, but maybe what it is is deliberately simple, focused on doing things well.

At dinner, the fried trout, ever so lightly breaded in cornmeal, is a delicate thing where it could have been fried into submission. The collards come with a housemade pepper sauce that sings. I still don’t really approve of a non-baked mac and cheese, but Preacher Green’s tops its with some real nice breadcrumbs. Some things you can get better elsewhere (like the squash casserole and country-fried steak), but nothing is bad. The owners keep the staff paying attention to details, and the atmosphere is reasonably lively, with a decidedly non-hipster crowd so far. Beer and wine are available, and a four-veggie plate will run you $20. Not bad!

The restaurant is open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and dinner Tuesday through Saturday 5–9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

SOUTHERN PROSPECT (1725 Electric Ave., 678-310-1096, southernprospect. com): This new place in Watkinsville’s Wire Park is shooting for a similar market to Preacher Green’s, only at higher prices and with a swankier atmosphere. For example, both restaurants have chicken tenders on their menus, but Preacher Green’s puts them in the children’s section, where they belong.

Lunch tends more to sandwiches, dinner to meat-and-three fare, but there’s some overlap. Some things are more spartan than expected, especially given Lahey’s fine-dining background, but they’re well executed. The meatloaf sandwich is nothing more than a slice of meatloaf on a buttered bun with a brown sugar ketchup dressing, but it’s a NICE slice of meatloaf: not too cold, not too hot, not too sweet, not boring, not challenging, with a beautiful texture. The smashburger (two patties, grilled onions, pickles, American cheese) is unexpectedly excellent, one of the best in town. It’s appropriately sized, the flavors do a nice little dance together, and the crispy bits around the edges are maximized. It’s also only $9 sans sides. A spinach salad with balsamic, strawberries, blue cheese and candied pecans is almost hip in its ’90s ambience by this point, but it, too, is well balanced, made with good ingredients and tasty. A salad of tomatoes, cucumbers, onion and basil appreciates its components. You’re getting

Independence Day Picnic

Madison-Morgan Cultural Center • 5 p.m. • FREE!

MMCC is hosting an old-fashioned, festive event to celebrate July 4 a day early. Guests are invited to gather on the front lawn with picnic baskets, coolers, tables and chairs while enjoying a patriotic concert from the Classic City Band of Athens. This band is the oldest continuously running community band in Georgia, functioning since 1976 as a nonprofit that brings free concerts to Athens throughout the year in styles including jazz, pop, marches, traditional and classical selections, show tunes and opera. Former Athens Mayor Heidi Davison even declared them “the official municipal band of Athens” in 2006. To secure one of the limited guaranteed areas and tables with a sponsorship, call the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center at 706342-4743. [Mary Beth Bryan]

Sandy Creek Playground

Dedication

Sandy Creek Park • 10 a.m. • $2 (free for children 12 and younger)

There’s a place for fun with Southern food, but unfortunately this mostly isn’t it because the food just isn’t that good. I’ve seen fried deviled eggs on at least two menus now, and I’d like to tell y’all to stop it. It’s not an improvement. I’ll compliment the crab cakes, which are light and crabby and not overdressed. The bar is having some fun making cute drinks that taste good, like the Porch Swing, which uses Severo Plata tequila, Cocchi Americano Rosa, Luxardo Amaro Abano, lime juice and strawberry rhubarb syrup. But the Creamy Dijon Clucker, an absolute slab of breaded chicken breast topped with ham, Swiss and mustard sauce and served with mashed potatoes and sweet corn succotash, is not only far too big for its plate, but reminds one strongly of Cracker Barrel. There’s nothing wrong with Cracker Barrel. I’ve eaten there plenty of times. Its brand is “unchallenging,” and sometimes that’s what you want. But its entrees are at a lower price point. It’s less of a date night kind of place, whereas Southern Prospect’s staff wear fancy aprons. It’s very easy to drop $150 and leave feeling a little annoyed about it, given how heavy and starchy and creamy most everything is. The fish and chips is pretty good; the rib-eye not worth the premium; the garden salad astonishingly basic. Southern Prospect is open Monday through Wednesday 4–9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m.–10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.–9 p.m. f

A new playground aimed toward accessibility for all children has recently been completed at Sandy Creek Park. Features include a roller slide that does not create cochlear implant-damaging static, augmentative and alternative communication boards for nonverbal communication, a slide embedded in a hill to avoid transferring mobility devices, braille signage and ASL communication boards, a quiet corner and much more. There will also be a play feature called Alex’s Lemonade Stand, named after Alexandra Scott, who had childhood cancer and raised over $1 million for pediatric cancer research by selling lemonade, then started Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and raised an additional $250 million. The playground has safety features including misting stations and shaded areas for cooling off, gentler turf carpet matting and a perimeter fence, as well. Families are encouraged to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate this achievement towards accessibility and enjoy the new playground. [MB]

Local artist Leigh Ellis’ most recent collection of watercolor paintings, “Time on Earth,” has found its rightful home at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. The works in the collection explore time through the eyes of a naturalist, with circular arrangements of the subjects mimicking that of a clock, reflecting cycles and seasons of nature. Birds are a motif in the collection, flying, colliding and entwining with each other and other natural imagery. Ellis has been painting and teaching in Athens for 25 years, but began her career 30 years ago as a biological illustrator after receiving her MS degree in biology. The crossover between art and science that characterizes her career path is evident in her award-winning artworks, which have been displayed in exhibits across the country, from Hawaii to Georgia. Cardynal

SOARING MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST HIP-HOP ARTIST

Cross-genre musician Cardynal Chavis has a familiar story about getting into music among young Athenians, but they have managed to leverage their drive, vision, opportunities and setbacks into Athens music achievements some people wait decades for.

Most recently the name may be familiar to you if you attended AthFest or paid close attention to the lineup. Chavis and their backing band performed on the Wicked Weed Main Stage Friday evening as Cardynal + The Flock, combining elements of hip hop, R&B, indie rock and more with an array of instrumentation. Performing at AthFest as Cardynal has been a goal and dream for them, starting with performing at the festival as a teenager.

“The first time I experienced AthFest at all, I had to have been 13 playing on the kids stage with the Camp Amped group. I was playing with this band called Trash Dog,” says Chavis. “It gave me that taste. It gave me that drive. Because, you know, I got to walk around and watch all these other people play on these huge stages, and I’m like, this exists in my city, like where I’m at.”

Before making it onto the AthFest main stage, Chavis was nominated in 2023 for the coveted Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award. Each year this award aims to spotlight local musicians of different genres who exemplify skillful and thoughtful storytelling. Chavis was nominated for their song “If You Love It,” which is about burn out and becoming aware of the cycles and patterns in day-to-day life. Under the artist name Cardynal, they had only been releasing music and presenting themself as an established artist for about two years at that point.

However, the bigger picture is that Chavis has been playing and making music essentially their whole life. Having watched

their dad play drums and guitar growing up, Chavis jumped on the drum set as soon as possible around the age of 3 or 4, then picked up the guitar at age 5. They went from writing their first song in first grade to rapping at age 13 or 14.

spring of 2020, Chavis says they went on a “spring break that never ended.” Stuck at home and staying at their mom’s house half the week away from their instruments at their dad’s house, Chavis focused on making beats on their mom’s computer. It was a particularly productive period of songwriting, writing full songs on a daily basis while quarantined. Then the name Cardynal came from a project idea to write songs from a bird’s eye view of the community, exploring different perspectives and empathizing with people who normally wouldn’t draw sympathy. Although the project wasn’t released, the name stuck and became a deeper sense of identity for the artist.

Early in life Chavis says that the hip hop they listened to was mainly whatever made it to popular mainstream, like Eminem and Drake. They listened to a “hodgepodge” of genres from singer-songwriters like Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson and Eric Hutchinson to heavier alternative bands like System of a Down, Linkin Park and Rage Against the Machine. Taking part in Nuçi’s Space’s Camp Amped music program exposed Chavis to an even wider range of music, and this diverse background of sounds is evident in what Chavis creates now.

The hip-hop artist and producer Cardynal was born out of the COVID pandemic experience. As a high school student in the

“I have to think about myself as Cardynal the person and as Cardynal the concept. That got even more complicated when I accepted that I was non-binary. I questioned for years, years and years; I’ve always had a thing for androgyny,” says Chavis.

As a rapper, singer, producer and engineer, “Cardynal the concept” is truly a reflection of what Chavis is capable of as a multi-instrumentalist and musician. The newest addition to the performance aspect of what Chavis delivers is The Flock—the backing band composed of Izzy Morrow, Cat Littlepage, Spencer Paul, Julia Nyunt, Assata Bellegarde, Mac McComb, Julien Berger and Ivory. As someone who is admit-

tedly very solo in their creation process and at times uncompromising, creating a live music experience with The Flock has taught Chavis a lot.

“One of the biggest lessons that I’ve learned in the process of working with the group is that not all changes are bad. Just because somebody is changing how they go about something doesn’t mean that they are trying to override what you created or what you started with,” says Chavis. “I have to expand my horizons. I have to expand a little bit on what I’m capable of being.”

Similarly Chavis views the projects they have dropped as a display of progress, a demonstration of talent and a view of their versatility. The next project, The Flock Tape, is very electronic based with an accumulation of impressive Athens-based features, and it will be released July 5. The inspiration for a feel-good, party-esque collection of songs came from Chavis’ dad making a comment after their last release, Bebop, that they hadn’t dropped a happy song in a very long time.

“I try to show the outer reaches of what I’m capable of doing as a producer, because I do want people to constantly walk away from my music with it in mind that I am a producer first,” says Chavis. There will be an album release show for The Flock Tape at MaiKai Kava Lounge on July 5 from 8–11 p.m. with opening performances by Nony1, DK and Kive?!, followed by a solo playthrough of the album by Cardynal. The performances will be followed by an after-party-style celebration.

If you missed Cardynal + The Flock at AthFest, another performance with the full band is coming up Aug. 2 at Athentic Brewing Co. with Nony1, DK and Blesstheplaya joining the lineup. Chavis also plans to release a music video to “Practice” from The Flock Tape around the time of this performance, so there is plenty to look forward to from this artist.f

REMEMBER TWO THINGS: Total Recall

Recordings just released two cassette tapes of releases from earlier this year. First is the three-song, two-minute-56-second-long demo from Häxorna. The whole thing is basically traditional, speedy hardcore that’s over before it barely begins. Next up is the four-song, four-minute-52-second-long Golden Lines by Joro Path. This one’s a little weirder and more beholden to a crustpunk tradition, especially opening song “Prophecy” and closing track “Procession.” The main thing with these, really, is the environmental disaster and economic inefficiency involved in plunking down six bucks for a hunk of deteriorating plastic which, in the best-case example above, contains fewer than five minutes of music. You can side-step this quandary by enjoying these digitally at totalrecallrecordings.bandcamp.com. If you want to take the purchase plunge, head to totalrecall.big cartel.com and they’ll get you sorted.

JUST CHECKING IN: Although he released the whopping 100-track collection More Music For Games this past January, Big Gray (aka Lucas Jensen) just released the relatively conservative two-track Sonifications last week. The opening track, “Sonifications 1,” follows a prescriptive ambient path right up until its midpoint when it begins to be pushed along by a killer drum rhythm that remains for over a full minute. By the track’s end, it has shapeshifted nicely into a more open space. The second track, “Autumn Brushes,” is a nice sketch of an airy but driven tune that doesn’t seem fully realized yet but sure is a nice listen. Find this and more at biggray. bandcamp.com.

Calling Planet Earth!. Earlier this year he released the 19-track, all instrumental album Of Time The artist, born Donald Whitehead, described the new album to me as his “most sample-heavy record to date, with lots of dialog from ’90s heavy hitter forgotten movies.” These snippets of the perhaps-familiar, though, don’t readily translate into an easy listening task. Indeed, this is a heavily layered album that thoroughly embodies the experimental trajectory that Whitehead took off on many years ago. That said, this isn’t unenjoyable at all, and even takes up the mantle of Whitehead’s old hip hop-based projects on tracks like “Project Montauk.” The album also features the first appearance of rapper Donny Knottsville anywhere for a while on the song “Tomb Raider.” This is a song with a beat made by Robitussin and the vocals are always slightly ahead of it. Find this at tatakitapes.bandcamp.com, and if you want to do the ol’ catalog deep dive, head to spacebrother.bandcamp.com.

AIN’T LIFE GRAND?: By today’s standard, it might first appear that the new album from Widespread Panic is an EP, but the six songs on the band’s new release Snake Oil King fill the record up just fine. It starts with the heavy rocker “Little By Little,” followed by the peaceful and wistful “We Walk Each Other Home,” which, itself, is similar in construction to the faster “Small Town.” The only song with a distinct Southern flair here is the nearly 8-minute “Tackle Box Hero.” Stream this wherever you do that sort of thing, or just go over to widespread panic.bandcamp.com.
