ThisOctober,FlagshipiscelebratingNationalFirePreventionMonthas designatedbytheNationalFireProtectionAssociation(NFPA)–aglobalnonprofitorganizationdevotedtoeliminatingdeath,injury,property,andeconomic lossduetofireandelectricalhazards.

ThehighlightoftheeventisFirePreventionWeek,takingplaceOctober9-15. FirePreventionWeekisobservedeachyearincommemorationoftheGreat ChicagoFire,whichbeganonOctober8,1871.Theconflagrationkilledmore than250people,left100,000homeless,destroyedmorethan17,400structures, andburnedmorethan2,000acresofland.

In1925,PresidentCalvinCoolidgeproclaimedFirePreventionWeekanational observance,makingitthelongest-runningpublichealthobservanceintheU.S.

October is National Fire Prevention Month in the US, marked by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to raise awareness about the dangers of fire and electrical hazards and prevent loss of life, injury, and property damage. Fire Prevention Week, held annually from October 9-15, commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This year's campaign theme is "Fire won't wait - Plan your escape" and aims to educate people about simple steps to stay safe from fires. Employers and facilities managers have a responsibility to maintain life safety systems, fire protection equipment, and train employees. Employees can prevent fires by identifying and addressing damaged or overloaded electrical outlets, keeping flammable materials away from electrical equipment, never leaving portable heaters unattended, and keeping workspaces and equipment clean and dry. In case of a fire, it is important to have a business continuity plan in place.
