Everyworkplace,regardlessofindustry,faceselectricalhazards.Faulty electricalequipment,inadequategrounding,orpoorlydesignedelectrical systemscancausesparks,fires,orelectrocution,posingasignificantrisktoall personnelworkinginthefacility.
AccordingtotheNationalFireProtectionAssociation,almost3in5workplace injurieswerecausedbydirectexposuretoelectricityin2020.Themostcommon electricalhazardsinclude:
Electricalshock–Occurswhenelectricalequipmentisnotgrounded correctlyandresultsinanelectricalcurrentpassingthroughthebody, causingburns,musclecontractions,orpossiblydeath.
Arcflash–Ariseswhenanelectricalcurrentjumpsbetweentwopoints, causingsevereburns,visionloss,andhearingdamage. Firesandexplosions–Happenswhenequipmentisoverloadedornot correctlymaintainedandcancausesignificantpropertydamageand injuriesorfatalities.
Chemicalspills–Certainchemicalscancreateaconductivepathfor electricity,increasingtheriskofelectricalshockorfires.
Poweroutagesandequipmentmalfunctionscanbecausedbyfaultyelectrical equipmentorwiring,leadingtocostlydowntimeanddisruptionsinbusiness operations.Topreventelectricalaccidents,itisessentialtohaveasafeelectrical systeminplacethatincludesproperinstallation,grounding,andmaintenanceof electricalequipment.
