letter from the editor Dear Readers, As we emerge through the final parts of the holiday season and into the New Year, we begin to reset our to-do lists. The thoughts start to flood in about what we would like to accomplish and how we’re going to set out to get it done. Plus, there’s always room for personal growth and improvement, so we’ll be making mental notes to watch what we eat and get a little more fresh air. For some, work never stops, but for those of us who have had a break during the winter months, getting back into the workday groove will be a challenge as well. Amongst all these plans and processes, I do hope that there will still be room for travel and exploration! With the total solar eclipse happening in April, and so many other extraordinary things to see and do, it is imperative that we take some time out for ourselves and our families to get out of the house!

Check out the destinations we’ve covered along the path of totality. Swim through several of our most favorite weekend waterthemed getaways. Find a home away from home in Tour America. Rip out a new recipe in Sip & Savor – it’s mindful indulgence, so you can eat up and not feel guilty! Whatever you find in this winter issue, it is sure to intrigue and inspire you. Here at Travel, Taste + Tour, we’re wishing you a happy and productive New Year. May you discover new horizons that exceed your expectations in every possible way, and may you share those discoveries with the people you love the most.

Happy Travels,

Abigail Blount

LET’S EXPLORE SOME OF THE GREAT PLACES TO VISIT AND THINGS TO DO IN NEVADA: If you're an outdoor enthusiast, Nevada offers an array of scenic landscapes. In the central part of the state, Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park provides a remote, 1,100-acres of public recreation area and a historic preserve. The Park is a paleontological treasure trove that offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life, including 225million-year-old marine reptile fossils. In the east part of the state, stop by Great Basin National Park, filled with awe-inspiring natural wonders.

Hike Wheeler Peak for breathtaking vistas, explore Lehman Caves' underground wonders, and stargaze under some of the darkest skies in the United States. Further south, Red Rock Canyon, which is located just outside of Las Vegas, provides an escape into stunning desert landscapes for hikers, rock climbers, and nature photographers that features walls and formations up to 3,000 feet high. For history buffs, a visit to the state capital, Carson City, is a must. Explore the Nevada State Museum, part of which is housed in the old Carson City Mint which last operated in 1893. Carson City is also home to the Nevada State Railroad Museum where visitors can delve into the rich history of the Silver State and see cars from the cars of the famous Virginia and Truckee Railroad. For those seeking to relive the Wild West era, head to Virginia City, an old mining town that still retains its authentic charm with wooden sidewalks, saloons, and historic tours. Lake Tahoe, nestled on the border between Nevada and California, is a yearround paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. In the summer, indulge in water sports, hiking, and mountain biking. Come winter, the region transforms into a worldclass ski destination with renowned resorts like Heavenly, Squaw Valley, and NorthStar.

Cody might be best known as a thrilling summer destination for lovers of the great outdoors, with the world’s longest-running nightly rodeo and access to the unrivaled beauty of America’s first national park, but Cody Yellowstone has a well-kept secret for the discerning traveler: it’s also a wonderland of winter adventure. Start right at the top by visiting Sleeping Giant, one of North America's oldest alpine ski areas. This laid-back, affordable, family-friendly destination offers skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing in the breathtaking Absaroka Mountain Range. With 900 vertical feet of ski slopes and 184 acres of terrain, there are bunny hills and exhilarating slopes for every skill level. If you prefer your skiing to be cross-country, you’re in luck. There are trails for everybody here, from the gentle South Fork Trail for firsttimers and folks who prefer a slower pace, to the expert-challenging Brown Creek Trail.

YOU CAN’T COME TO CODY YELLOWSTONE WITHOUT EXPLORING YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK. As you tour the park, keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of elk, moose, bighorn sheep, or even America’s national mammal, the mighty bison. The quieter winter months and blankets of white snow provide amazing opportunities to spot the area’s celebrated wildlife. Immerse yourself in the beauty of icy scenery, snow-capped mountains, and untouched wilderness when you climb one

of more than 250 frozen waterfalls in the South Fork Valley during the Wyoming Ice Festival, held January 4-7. Ice climbers of all skill levels can work with expert instructors to experience the thrill of this winter sport. When you’ve had your fill of the great outdoors, find out why Cody Yellowstone is The Best Western Small Town in America as voted in The USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards. Its welcoming warmth and famous Western hospitality aren’t limited to the summer months. Sheridan Avenue, Cody’s main street, provides opportunities to cozy up with delicious coffee, excellent shopping, and worldclass dining. Those looking for the perfect après ski (or snowmobile, or ice climb) destination should call in at Buffalo Bill’s Irma Hotel, with its ornate cherry wood back bar gifted to Buffalo Bill Cody from Queen Victoria in 1900. Or stop into the luxurious Chamberlin Inn, where legendary author Ernest Hemingway’s signature is immortalized in the guestbook. As a regular visitor to Wyoming’s best fishing and hunting destinations, Hemingway stayed at the Chamberlin in 1932. Be sure to try the Death in the Afternoon, a cocktail named in honor of one of his most famous works.

Come stay the night A N D V I S I T H A R DY CO U N T Y, W V

You’ll need more than a day, or even a weekend, to take in all the breathtaking beauty of Hardy County! So, relax and plan to stay a little longer. You can choose from cozy inns, hotels in town, small motels, cabins in the State Park, or vacation rentals tucked into the mountains. Check out all you can do throughout the year.... Hardy County’s rivers, stocked lakes, and mountain runs offer some of WV’s best fishing. Rent a canoe or kayak at Breezewood Adventures to see The Trough, an isolated 6-mile gorge on the South Branch of the Potomac River where bald eagles soar overhead. The South Fork is a seasonal float and fishing river, and Lost River disappears underground to become the Cacapon, a great long-distance paddling river. Hike and bike the trails in nearby George Washington National Forest to spectacular mountain vistas. The Lee Ranger District of GWNF, straddling West Virginia and Virginia, is home to the Trout Pond and the Wolf Gap Recreation Areas where you will find a variety of camping options. Trails surround the 17-acre Rock Cliff Lake and Trout Pond which, while diminutive, is West Virginia’s only natural lake. Trout Pond area

is open seasonally, but the Wolf Gap Recreation Area can be enjoyed all year. Visit Lost River State Park and hike the 23 miles of trails through the historic park, built by the CCC in the 1930’s, or experience the trails on horseback with a guide from Hidden Trails Stables. Climb to the impressive Cranny Crow Overlook where you will also find a few rustic camping sites in case you would like to stargaze in the skies above the mountains. Further down the ridge top towards Miller’s Rock is the historic fire tower (a preservation effort is underway) and the restored fire-keeper’s primitive cabin. When you’re not on the trails, enjoy the naturalist’s programs, disc golf tournament, and other events held in the park. Join Lost River Trails Coalition for their Lost River Classic Gravel Race in August and the Lost River Trail Run in May. The funds raised from the Coalition’s events support the building of mountain bike trails in the park and their youth mountain bike team, The Cryptids. Looking for something else to do? Travel our country roads to see the Hardy County Barn Quilt Trail. Follow the Hardy County Historic Schoolhouse Trail on TheClio.org, or the Civil War Trails markers. Then go shopping at Lost River Artists Marketplace, South Fork General Store, Lost River General Store, Our Roots, and Lost River Trading Post, for WV-made products and

artwork, antiques, made-to-order food, and beverages. Celebrate our history and explore our rural heritage during Heritage Weekend in late September or on walking tours, at traditional local parades and festivals, and community dinners scheduled throughout the year. In Moorefield, tee-off at Valley View Golf Club or visit West-Whitehill Winery for a tour and tasting. Enjoy performances at McCoy’s Grand Theater, a movie at South Branch Cinema 6, or ice skating at Holidays on Ice in the Town Park. See glassblowing demonstrations at Dakota Glass Works and visit WordPlay, an independent bookstore, and the galleries at Lost River Works and Lost River Trading Post in Wardensville. Stop at Drifters Café for breakfast or lunch or take a midday break at Kac Ka Pon or Marina’s Pizza in Wardensville. In Moorefield stop for lunch or dinner at Sweets & Treats on Main or Gennaro’s Italian Restaurant, for a steak or salad at O’Neill’s, or a burger at Better Times. End your day with dinner and music at Mullins 1847 or Lost River Grill. Morristown

LOCATED IN EAST TENNESSEE, IS ENVELOPED IN NATURAL BEAUTY Morristown, located in East Tennessee, is enveloped in natural beauty. The small town sits on Cherokee Lake and is surrounded by scenic Appalachian Mountain views. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to spend a lot of time outdoors. It’s also the kind of place that has the perfect landscape for a disc golf course… or four. Known as Tennessee's Disc Golf Capital™, Morristown has a course for every skill level from beginners to experts. At one point, there wasn’t a course within 50 miles of Morristown, but professional disc golf course designer HB Clark, along with local and state officials, helped turn the town into a disc golf haven. Because of that, the town is now home to the annual Tennessee State Disc Golf Championships, bringing 500+ competitors from 20-plus states to town in early June. Each one of the four HB Clark designed courses provides a different experience, with different difficulties and terrain. Grab your discs, and let’s explore them all!

KIWANIS COURSE AT WAYNE HANSARD PARK This was the course that started it all. It opened in 2007 and remains a favorite to this day. This challenging 18hole course is heavily wooded, which is part of the difficulty! Don’t worry though. The yellow basket tops make each hole easy to see amongst the trees. The terrain is rocky, and the elevation changes on each hole. A walking path weaves through, so be sure to look for any hikers in the area before you throw. CHEROKEE PARK COURSE Located on the shore of Cherokee Lake, Morristown added this course to its collection in 2012, and it quickly became a staple. Just like the others, there’s a mix of open and wooded holes, but elevation changes add an extra challenge since you will be throwing both up and down hills. Beware of the drop-offs around a few of the holes—a disc that veers off the path could cost you an extra shot or two!

<

Known as Tennessee's Disc Golf Capital™, Morristown has a course for every skill level from beginners to experts.

ROTARY COURSE AT FRANK LORINO PARK Established in 2012, this course is a “choose your own adventure” combination with two courses in one! You can choose to venture down the yellow basket path for a shorter course, or the blue basket path for a longer one. Each one features 18 holes. It offers a mixture of open and wooded holes, which makes it great for beginners who are just getting into the sport. It’s not too easy for advanced players—there’s still some technical shots that make the course a fun one no matter your skill level! PANTHER CREEK COURSE This championship-level course opened to the public in 2017. Located inside a state park, this course is not for the faint of heart. You’ll be hiking up a mountain as you play through the holes, so hiking shoes are recommended! It’s

Morristown’s most difficult course, featuring elevation and a mix of long, open shots and technically difficult, wooded fairways. You will never get tired of playing this course, even if you might get tired from the hike! When you play disc golf in Morristown, you’ll sharpen your skills. Finesse is just as important as power, and each of the four courses give you an opportunity to practice both. It’s not uncommon to find first-time players wandering the courses alongside disc golf professionals—and that’s exactly what Morristown designed their courses for! Everyone is welcome, and some may discover a new love for the sport, and some may visit to take on a new challenge after years of play. No matter where you are in your disc golf journey, you’ll leave Morristown with a smile.

WHAT IS A SOLAR ECLIPSE? This phenomenon occurs when our moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow over our planet. Because the moon will be closer to Earth, it will appear larger and completely block our view of the sun (and the sunlight) for a few minutes, essentially turning day into night momentarily. Total eclipses are rare and only happen approximately once every 18 months. Since the paths of totality are so narrow, it is extremely rare that 13 of our states get to experience complete totality in one spot or another.

WHERE IS THE PATH OF TOTALITY? The small viewing route will span across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. In the following pages, we’ll introduce you to many of the surrounding cities and counties that are offering accommodations, special workshops, festivals, guest speakers, and so much more, all centered around the 2024 Eclipse!

The last Great American Solar Eclipse was in 2017 and it took the United States by storm, becoming one of the most-watched solar eclipses in history.

Earth’s axial tilt and the moon’s slightly elliptical orbit contribute to the rarity of solar eclipses, making each one a completely unique cosmic alignment.

Fun FactS ☼ Animals are often affected by a solar eclipse and may behave unusually. Nocturnal animals may wake up thinking it is nighttime, and those who are awake during the daylight may think it is time for bed! ☼ Solar eclipses not only have an effect on the light, but also the temperature, which can drop due to the moon blocking the sun’s rays. ☼ Ancient cultures often interpreted solar eclipses as celestial omens or events brought on by Deities and Gods. ☼ During totality, the sun’s corona, the outermost layer of its atmosphere, becomes visible, revealing a stunning halo of plasma and magnetic fields. Solar eclipses allow scientists to view the corona without any obstructions, which offer very rare opportunities to study the sun. ☼ The speed of the moon’s shadow moving across Earth’s surface during the eclipse can reach over 2,000 miles per hour!

☼ Solar eclipses inspired the creation of eclipse glasses, which are absolutely essential for viewing a solar eclipse. Eclipse glasses are much darker than sunglasses and have special filters installed to protect your eyes from the sun’s blinding rays. Make sure you have a pair of eclipse glasses for viewing and NEVER look up during a solar eclipse without them on!

☼ Ancient Greeks were among the first to predict solar eclipses using simple geometry and mathematical principles. They laid the foundation for the extremely advanced eclipse prediction methods we have today.

Greenville, TX

We would like to shine the light on some great features to see while in Greenville . . . except for April 8, 2024, when it will be “all lights out” from 1:42:15 PM until 1:46:25 PM, as we will be under a total eclipse. For the Eclipse we will celebrate with concerts, food trucks, vendors and great memorabilia! Also, hear a word from NASA as we will be honored with a visiting astronaut who will be a part of our eclipse events. If you happen to stop by on that weekend, or any weekend for that matter, we can keep you busy with: several great off the beaten path restaurants, Landon’s Winery (where Tuesday nights are game nights and they honor Wine down Wednesdays with ½ price wines), or shopping opportunities from Thrift Stores to upscale Boutiques, or browse the Audie Murphy Cotton Museum which celebrates Greenville’s cotton heritage and America’s most decorated war hero. MINDFUL INDULGENCE

SIP

 & sAvor

IN A WORLD THAT OFTEN RUSHES THROUGH EVERYTHING – MEALS INCLUDED – THE CONCEPT OF MINDFUL INDULGENCE IN CUISINE AND COCKTAILS EMERGES AS A REFRESHING APPROACH TO SAVORING LIFE'S SIMPLE PLEASURES. This culinary philosophy extends beyond the act of eating and drinking; it invites individuals to engage their senses fully, inspiring a deeper connection with the food on their plates and the beverages in their glasses. Mindful indulgence also extends to understanding the origins of what we consume. The farm-to-table and bean-to-bar movements exemplify this trend. Knowing where your food comes from and the craftsmanship behind it enhances the enjoyment. Whether it's a singleorigin coffee, a hand-crafted cocktail or small batch brew, artisanal chocolate, or locally sourced produce, the story behind the product adds depth beyond measure to one’s culinary experiences.

While the term "indulgence" might evoke images of decadence, mindful indulgence emphasizes a balanced approach. It encourages savoring treats without guilt and being aware of one's body and its signals. This awareness promotes a healthy relationship with food, fostering both physical and mental well-being. Embracing this culinary philosophy offers a counterbalance – an opportunity to slow down, appreciate the richness of life, and find joy in the everyday rituals of nourishment. So, let's raise a glass and savor each bite, embracing the art of mindful indulgence.

Winter retreats to start a new year in New York’s Sullivan Catskills

T

he beginning of every new year is a chance to focus on self-care. A visit to New York’s Sullivan Catskills may be the salve you need. This legendary destination, just a 90-minute drive from New York City, has long been a haven for well-being and boasts wellness resorts, fitness centers, yoga and pilates studios, massage therapists, and naturalists.

The newest entrant into the wellness space is Hemlock Neversink, a project of Foster Supply Hospitality (Kenoza Hall, The DeBruce, and The Arnold House). Hemlock Neversink sits on a 230-acre property formerly known as the New Age Health Spa. The reimagined 33-room facility beckons guests to experience Catskills restoration with an all-inclusive experience that includes access to 12 treatment rooms, a meadow-view gym, an indoor pool, hot tubs, saunas, a steam room, a sun deck, and a relaxation room. There are outdoor tennis courts and a goat sanctuary on the property to connect and engage with the animals.

Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark

The DeBruce

Outdoor trails are plentiful, and creative crafts and workshops promise rejuvenation and self-discovery. Mindful, healthy eating is at the core of Hemlock’s restaurant, Bittersweet. Says co-founder Kirsten Foster, “Our vision of wellness isn't about achieving perfection. It's about achieving happiness, having fun, and feeling restored." A 20-minute drive from Hemlock Neversink is YO1 Longevity & Health Resort in Monticello. It’s a 68,000square-foot Ayurvedic resort with 131 rooms focusing on restoring health and balance through an authentic Indian perspective. There are many options for health and wellness in the Sullivan Catskills—pamper yourself at Crystal Life Spa at Resorts World Catskills or the Hemlock Spa at Kenoza Hall, or find wellbeing at The Chi Hive Studio in Narrowsburg, Mountaindale Yoga & Wellness, The Yoga Space, or Somewhere in Time Retreat. There’s great family fun to start out the new year or cure winter cabin fever at the Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark where it’s always a balmy 84 degrees inside to enjoy the water rides and waterslides. There’s also arcades, 3D gaming, and virtual reality. There are 324 suites and eight dining options. Villa Roma Resort and Conference Center— with a fine selection of rooms and suites— features an indoor pool, game room, sports complex, bowling alley, bounce houses, and racquetball. Or try downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. There are nearly a dozen dining options and cocktail lounges. Roscoe Mountain House (formerly Tennanah Lake Golf and Tennis Club) is planning a bevy of winter activities. Check their website, RoscoeMountainClub.com, for updates. Winter here can be more than restorative. It can be downright exhilarating. Holiday Mountain Ski and Fun Park— now under new ownership of the Taylor family, longtime skiers, and local business owners— is reopening this

season with six trails, two chairlifts, an all-new learning center, and 12 lanes of snow tubing. Long-term plans include 17 ski and snowboarding trails and a mountain of family adventure in every season. When the lakes and ponds freeze over, ice fishing is a popular pastime here. New to the sport? Dress in moisturewicking layers, a warm jacket, and insulated pants. You’ll need an ice auger to drill holes and tip-ups to drop your fishing line in the water. Most importantly, make sure the ice is at least four inches thick. Don’t miss the Ice Fishing Derby at the Arnold House or the King of the Ice contest on White Lake in February. Snowshoeing is a great way to get your heart rate pumping, and Trailkeeper.org can help find trails suitable to your fitness level. Another popular pastime is eaglewatching on the shores of the Upper Delaware River. Up to 200 eagles winter here. The Sullivan Catskills Dove Trail is worth a tour in winter. The trail honors the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair held in Bethel and features 68+ hand-painted dove sculptures. During your tour, you can make stops in our quaint downtowns and at our craft breweries, wineries, distilleries and cideries on the award-winning Good Taste Beverage Trail. There’s always Catskill-icious food. Some have live music, and one includes a trek up picturesque Beer Mountain. Interested in a romantic couple's winter escape? Consider a boutique inn. Here's a curated list of ten places to dine, ensuring your taste buds are in for a treat.

cuisine, including mouthwatering bison burgers and savory steaks. 2. The Warehouse Gastropub Elevated pub grub is served up in a stylish setting in this new addition to Sheridan’s culinary scene. Brunch is to die for here, with creative fare like breakfast pizza (sausage, bacon, eggs, caramelized onions, mozzarella, garlic sauce) and the spectacularly sweet bombolini (Italian donuts with Nutella and whipped mascarpone). The Warehouse also features regular live music, a supper club, and cocktails for a cause.

1. Open Range at the Historic Sheridan Inn

3. The Wagon Box Inn

Begin your culinary odyssey at the Historic Sheridan Inn, a revered landmark that has welcomed travelers since the late 1800s. In fact, Buffalo Bill Cody, a partner in the construction of the inn, frequently auditioned his Wild West Show right from the iconic porch. Step into the elegant atmosphere of the inn's dining room and relish delectable dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients and grab a drink at the bar gifted to Buffalo Bill by none other than Queen Victoria. The menu at Open Range, the inn's restaurant, showcases the best of Wyoming

Nestled among the pines in the hamlet of Story, Wyoming, the Wagon Box underwent a change in ownership late last year and has reemerged as one of the top restaurants in the state. It doesn’t hurt that dining out on the sprawling deck in the evening is one of our region’s most seminal experiences. The pork belly burnt ends are one of the most delicious appetizers you’ll ever sink your teeth into, while the buffalo short rib is the perfect reward after a long day of hiking the nearby mountains.

FROM COZY DINERS TO UPSCALE RESTAURANTS, SHERIDAN COUNTY BOASTS A DELIGHTFUL ARRAY OF EATERIES THAT CATER TO EVERY PALATE.

The Silver Spur Café A classic café experience to fuel all your wildest Wyoming adventures. One of Sheridan’s most beloved and longest-serving institutions, the silver spur is known for its Calamity Jane French toast cinnamon rolls,

hearty homestyle breakfast burritos, and cocka-doodle-do omelets. Breakfast at the Silver Spur is a Sheridan County right of passage. 7. Wyoming Buckshot Saloon Located in Ranchester, at the start of the epic Bighorn Scenic Byway, the Buckshot Saloon is always featuring something fresh and exciting. One week it’s a hearty BBQ platter courtesy chef Jason Pepin, the next it’s a classic fry bread, and after that it’s a trio of vampire tacos. In the summertime the Buckshot is a great place to unwind after a full day of hiking, biking, fishing, and exploring. Come winter, this is where you want to fuel up before heading out and crushing a full day of powder turns. 8. Just LeDoux It Saloon & Steak Out While the new location is making hay in Vegas, the original LeDoux Saloon is still dishing up the hits in Big Horn. We love the atmosphere, the nods to the late, great Chris LeDoux, the signature cocktails, and the locally sourced ingredients. We’re always game for a Legerski Roll, and we have a deep affinity for the Bareback Jack spare ribs, but the star of the show nearly always ends up being one of the prime cuts of beautiful beef.

“SEATED AT THE FOOT OF THE ICONIC BIGHORN MOUNTAINS IN NORTHERN WYOMING, SHERIDAN COUNTY OFFERS MORE THAN JUST BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES AND COWBOY CHARM; IT IS ALSO A PARADISE FOR FOOD ENTHUSIASTS.”

Take a Step Back in Rabun County, Georgia! Experiencing life in the beautiful mountains of Rabun County, Georgia will put you in touch with history, surprisingly, in everyday ways. History in the Southern Appalachians seems to be lingering just over your shoulder and more a part of the present than it may be in many other places. Many of the people who live here come from families who have called this area home for many generations. As such, the stories, traditions, skills, and even the environment of our ancestors is still right here in our midst, mostly unchanged. From music to crafts, cooking, dancing, farming or just plain walking around out in the woods, the time-honored ways of life in the mountains are still appreciated and practiced. That’s one of the things that makes Rabun County so special and one of the many reasons people who aren’t long time residents come to visit and sometimes stay. When you come to Rabun County to take a step back and experience a little of the past, there are many ways to go about it. You can stop by the Rabun County Historical Society for access to local historic records,

Indulge in a little Sippin' Whiskey crafted at R.M. Rose Co. Distillery, the oldest registered distillery in Georgia, using the same processes and recipes of founder Rufus Mathewson Rose from 1867.

painstakingly and lovingly preserved. See a working grist mill at the Hambidge Center. Or, immerse yourself in history at the Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center, watching craftsmen and women plying their talents with the same tools and techniques as the settlers did. You can also visit Tallulah Gorge State Park’s Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center to learn about one of the most dramatic and amazing geographic features in the state. But in Rabun County, the past can be found in so many more places than just history centers. How about stopping in at the Dillard House to enjoy a true farm-to-table, homestyle menu made with the same recipes that founder Carrie Dillard used, when she prepared fresh meals with vegetables straight from her garden, for her boarding house guests, over 100 years ago. Afterwards, head next door to indulge in a little “Sippin’ Whiskey” crafted at R.M. Rose Co. Distillery, the oldest registered distillery in Georgia, using the same processes and recipes of founder Rufus Mathewson Rose from 1867.

Spend the night at the Lake Rabun Hotel, a 100-year-old inn fully restored and preserved, still filled with quiet, rustic charm. Or, take a walk along the Bartram Trail. There, you can follow in the footsteps of William Bartram, one of the first explorers of this area, who documented his journey in 1775 in his book, Travels, still in print today. The trail leads to some of Georgia’s most beautiful forests, peaks, rivers and waterfalls, so unspoiled that you’ll really feel like you’re an explorer yourself. And, you’d really be missing out if you didn’t take in a little ‘ole timey music and dancing. There are many venues that host local musicians playing their own versions of songs and styles that have been passed down to them through

generations. If your legs need a little “tuning up” before you’re ready to jump in, head up to the newly renovated Mountain City Playhouse for a dance lesson, they’ll be happy to help out! As you can see, history really is alive (and kicking!) in Rabun County. And it’s not boring or dusty either. It’s loads of fun, adventurous, authentic, proud, heartfelt and welcoming, just like everything else you’ll find in the North Georgia mountains. So come to Rabun County to take a little step back. You may just be surprised how far it will get you! For more information about all the wonderful things you’ll find in Rabun County, visit ExploreRabun.com.
