RATING: 5/5 STARS written by: Dorothy “Joan” Stevenson

Angelina Jolie // MALEFICENT Sharlto Copley // KING STEFAN Sam Riley // DIAVAL Brenton Thwaites // PRINCE PHILLIP Imelda Staunton // KNOTGRASS Juno Temple // THISTLEWIT Lesley Manville // FLITTLE You know the story. At her christening, princess Aurora is cursed by the evil faerie Maleficent so that before the sun sets on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. A good fairy then amends the curse to put her into a deep sleep to which she will only awaken from by true love’s kiss. You didn’t know anything about Maleficent except that she was evil and pissed off about not being invited to the christening. Every story has two sides. This film gives you the tale of Sleeping Beauty from Maleficent’s point of view. We see the beginnings of Maleficent, her origin. And we find out that she may not have been as bad as we have all thought. When Maleficent was a girl, she was a caretaker and guardian for her world, the realm of fairies that co-existed along side humans. This was much to the unrest of the king who wanted to wipe out all mystical creatures and claim the land for himself. Maleficent also befriended a human boy who became a close companion, but as he grew, his ambition took him back to his world and away from her. In later years their friendship took an unfortunate turn that left Maleficent devastated, violated and very justifiably bitter. She watches and waits for her moment to exact her revenge which she unfurls

with evil eleganza at the christening of little Aurora. The king enacts a plan to keep his little daughter safely hidden away until after her 16th birthday, but ultimately Maleficent sees through it. Still holding on to the pain and bitterness of the past she begins to question herself and her actions. As the years up to Auroras fateful birthday roll on, Maleficent realizes that she has to change what she has set in motion, but can it be done? Is it too late to change her fate and Aurora’s? Angelina Jolie is serving you evil faerie realness! With her clipped British accent and prosthetic cheekbones that look so sharp they could cut you if you slapped her, Jolie exudes darkness, a regal bearing, and commands your attention every moment she is on the screen. So deliciously evil and glorious to see as she wields her power. She RULES! Angelina is joined in the cast by Elle Fanning (Dakota’s little sister) as Princess Aurora. Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter/Phoenix), Lesley Manville (Another Year), and Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises) play the three faeries who are charged with Aurora’s care for the first 16 years of her life. These ladies are totally delightful as Aurora’s ditzy caretakers. Sam Riley (Brighton Rock) is Diaval, Maleficent’s shape shifting companion and Sharlto Copley (District 9) as King Stefan, who was once a peasant boy that was Maleficent’s friend, now turned bitter enemy. Beautiful visuals, but I feel they didn’t go as far as they could have with the 3D. This is a world with all kinds of exotic fantasy creatures and breathtaking landscapes. I think the 3D should have been more deeply indulged here—like gangbusters Lord Of The Rings style. There is huge, huge eye candy here (not to mention a dragon) and I think every stop should have been pulled out. Disney is the master of self-exploitation and Maleficent is an interesting way to re-invent one of the legendary pieces of their catalog. I think Maleficent is a nice piece of faerie tale fantasy. You might want to go see this one now on the big screen. Don’t wait for Netflix. I leave you with the official Disney twitter hashtag: #Eviliscomplicated P.S. A great film for you OUATers (and you know who you are). //

ROCKING TO THE BEAT OF HIS OWN DRUM written by: Tony Lowe / photos by: Tony Lowe & Photo Assistant Alejandro Garza

If you have ever seen him perform with his band you would know that Tim Webber is a beaming ball of energy and enthusiasm as drummer of the Killer Flamingos, one of Metro Detroit’s local music sensations. The group has been a part of several Pride celebrations in Metro Detroit and are centerpieces to the festivities every year as well as some of our favorite nightlife destinations. We reached out to Tim to get the rockstar perspective on our community, how far we have come, where we are going, and what’s up next for us.

FLAME // FEATURE: TIM WEBBER

You’re part of the band The Killer Flamingos, I like to think that you guys are a big Detroit staple in the music scene. We are a cover band; the band has been around for about twenty years. With that I think we get a little more respect than a lot of cover bands around because we have been around for so long and kept the band so successful and steady. And it seems like every year for some strange reason on Click on Detroit we win “Best Original Rock Band” even though we don’t play original music. Have you guys ever played original music? When I first came on the band in 2007, the band was doing some original stuff, and had a record out. I kind of pushed the band in my own way to really go 110 percent into one thing, mostly because we didn’t want to half-ass it and get people

confused about what we do. So with this band, everyone can have their own personal projects, but as a group I wanted us to focus 110 percent on being a cover band and doing the best we can. Where do you guys play? How busy are you guys? Well, when I first got started in the band everyone was strongly against corporate work, and wedding work. Now, that is our bread and butter. Unfortunately, the days of live bands in bars was the late 90’s and early 2000’s—seeing live bands in bars is just not around anymore. Now it’s DJ’s. I think it goes in waves, like any other music, 70’s rock bands, 80’s electronic, 90’s rock bands, and now we’re back to electronic. How much are you going to be a part of Motor City Pride? This is our fifth year of doing Pride in Detroit, our 3rd year of Motor City Pride. I am openly gay and the only one in the band that is gay. What I love about Pride is that the band loves the gig just as much as I do. It’s one of those gigs that we really look forward to. They’ll design shirts for the gig and get as excited as I do about it. My guitar player made a shirt one year that said “I love my gay drummer.” January 1st I’m on the phone and on that email to get for June. It’s always hard for us, because we gig every night, especially in the summer. I always need to get a Sunday day-spot, because we play at Luna on Sunday nights. Everyone’s really good about making it work, so you’ll see us at 3:30pm on the main stage at Pride.

How busy are you and the band, and what are you guys involved in? Pretty much between gigging 250 nights a year-ish, and then we rehearse at least twice a month, we are booked solid. As far as nightlife I don’t get to go out a lot because of the band’s schedule, but I have always donated to and supported the Human Rights Campaign and the Trevor Project. You’ve mentioned that the world has changed so much since you came out? I was nineteen when I came out. My dad is a conservative Republican and he was open and cool about it. Now, my mom it took her a little while. I think the fact that I couldn’t have kids even though I could adopt was an eye-opener for her at first. There was a week, I was living at home at the time, even when she just saw me she would just start crying. It was really rough. Pretty much how I came out was I was dating someone at the time, and we had just got back from Florida. I remember a week before she got the room she asked me who I was going with and how we were going to share the room. I’m like “That’s fine, we’ll make it work!”. Long story short she got confused and flustered.

He came over one night. We were just hanging out at home, and she met him and instantly she knew. So the cat was out of the bag. The next day she sat me down and we had a talk. That was May of 2002. It was one of the happiest days of my life. I came out as bisexual, ya know, to soften the blow a bit. One of my greatest inspirations is Harvey Milk. Absolutely love him. A lot of the things that he has said are right on the money. I love the one he says ‘You must come out.’ If you want this to survive, the LGBT community, if you want us to gain more acceptance and everything, you have to come out. Being in the closest doesn’t help anyone. You wanted me to ask you about your sex life. How do you feel about the gay social apps, like Grindr, etc.? For me, that’s the only way that I keep in contact with the scene. I never get to go out really. I think it’s great for what it is. I’m not a hookup guy. So I get a lot of the normal messages from people asking for whatever, and I’m like “We can go out for a glass of wine…” You’ve got to know what it is. I’m not looking to find my husband on Grindr. If it happens… [laughs]! I have some friends, they met on Manhunt and they are still together. For me I was in a relationship throughout my whole twenties. I’ll be thirty-four in September. When I got out of it right away I felt like I needed to be in another relationship. Now I am to the point where I really like being single. I freak out sometimes thinking I’m going to wake up and be 50 and feel like I missed the boat. It took me a long time to be very comfortable with being by myself and being alright with it. It was a major blow when it’s always “us” and not “me.” My sex life is pretty mellow right now. I’ve never really been the kind to have a one night stand. It doesn’t do anything for me.

FLAME // FEATURE: TIM WEBBER Gay bars used to be all over the place, now we are down to a handful. I think it’s wonderful that a place like Necto has a Pride night. But, it’s a little weird to me—you don’t go to Red Robin for Urban night. It’s a little like every place should be Pride night, and Straight night, and Urban night and whatever night. I do love seeing big corporations now jumping on the bandwagon and supporting us. I still kind of see gay bars almost as segregated water fountains. Almost like we are segregating ourselves from everyone else. I can’t quite explain it. I feel like we have to jump into the mainstream and be a part of the whole mix. I know it’s hard. People don’t always want it. I’m not completely sure what the future is. You said you haven’t had a drink at a show in over three years. The last time I drank on a show was the end of January 2011. I got absolutely shit-hammed before we even started. I had a moment of pure panic. I wanted to so badly to be good, but I couldn’t even get my hands, and feet, and brain to work together. It was awful. Got done with the show, I don’t know how I made it through. The band was so mad at me. It’s funny how the crowd, when they are drunk, are cool with everything. I got home

16//

JUNE 2014

and wrote this long email to the band pretty much saying, “Hey, I’m done drinking on gigs…” I knew they were at home reading it like, “Yea, Webber, you’ve said that before…” and it’s been three and a half years. And I love my wine. I actually enjoy it now. I’ll work my ass off, then I deserve a glass of wine. Or a bottle… or two or three. But I like that. I don’t want to drink just to drink. And the band is better because of it. It’s one thing if you’re a keyboard player or a guitar player, but being a drummer, if you fuck up everyone notices. You see people dancing, start tripping because there’s no beat. It’s a big deal. Is there anything else you want to put out there? The biggest thing is that I think it’s an absolutely wonderful time for the LGBT community, it’s our Civil Rights Movement. It’s beautiful and has changed so much since I came out. I can go anywhere and see gay couples, and not just the gay bars. It’s amazing. //

COOKING UP PRODIGALITY THE WASTEFULNESS OF COOKING SHOWS written by: Austin VanKirk Last month columnist Joan Stevenson wrote about cooking shows, which in turn prompted me to write my own Austininfused opinion on the topic. I’ll be on the treadmill at the gym, trying to get fit, and right in front of me is a row of massive televisions with at least two of these playing the Food Network. I don’t know who thought it would be a good idea to dangle food in front of overweight people trying to lose weight on the StairMaster, but really, that’s just cruel and unusual. That tangent aside, I don’t watch television, so I am not regularly exposed to some of the ridiculous shows broadcasted. The most ridiculous of these, in my opinion, are cooking shows. Being a vegetarian, watching these chefs tenderize, season, cut, and filet slabs of meat makes my stomach turn. For me, I’m not watching people prepare food, I am seeing them slice into dead flesh. I think to myself, “How can they show this on television? It’s so macabre.” Maybe I’m too sensitive, but watching these folks toss around chicken breasts and pork chops with such nonchalance makes me uncomfortable. I think for most people it’s just food, but for me, that’s simply a piece of a dead animal. I also find cooking shows to be impractical. By that I mean I can’t smell the food being prepared, I can’t taste it—all I can do is see it. The whole point of food is to eat it. Maybe it has a pretty presentation, and that’s well and good to look

“BY THAT I MEAN I CAN’T SMELL THE FOOD BEING PREPARED, I CAN’T TASTE IT—ALL I CAN DO IS SEE IT. THE WHOLE POINT OF FOOD IS TO EAT IT.” at it, but unlike a painting or sculpture, the ultimate intent is for it to be consumed. Sure it’s art, but it’s transient, which in my mind decreases its overall value. Further, I, like most people, have neither the money nor know-how to make or buy the food that the folks on these shows prepare. Apart from the hunger pangs we must feel when we watch these shows, insult is added to injury when we realize we might never be able to experience such expensive food. I can only speak for myself here, but why should we want to torture ourselves with images of what we cannot have? It seems almost masochistic to me. I was raised in home where food was not wasted—never.

20//

JUNE 2014

My parents used to say, “There are starving people in [insert country name here] who would love to eat this food. Now eat your peas before I call Santa Clause and tell him not to bring you any Christmas gifts.” We’d eat leftovers for days before there was ever any thought of throwing it away, and even then, it probably went to the dog so that it wasn’t wasted entirely. I think most people’s parents said this at one point or another, but I took this to heart. Though that was many years ago, those ideals have stuck with me so much that even as an adult, I do not waste food. It’s a part of my values. So when I see a show like Hell’s Kitchen, where that pompous ass Gordon Ramsay takes one bite—one bite—of dishes the contestants on the show poured their hearts into making before passing a ruling and moving on to the next, I’m left to wonder, “What do they do with the rest of those plates?” I have to assume that they are tossed. I mean, Ramsay takes a bite of each, thus contaminating and making it unfit to donate to a shelter or something, what else are they to do with them? All that work, money, time, and (most importantly to me) animal lives are wasted. The prodigality here is disgusting. Listen, I love food. Like, I really love food—it’s the reason why I’m on the treadmill at the gym exposing myself to these awful cooking shows in the first place. But what do these shows say about our culture? How can we sit and watch a television show displaying and then throwing away more food in a single episode than what some people, even here in America, eat in a week? I cringe when I think about it. I’m not in the business of shaming people, but I am in the business of inspiring new methods of thought and consideration. I feel that I must stress how stupid, wasteful, and nonsensical these shows are if examined from an objective standpoint. I think in the U.S., we sometimes forget that we are fortunate enough to have access to such an enormous supply of food. It’s great that we have enough resources to produce or import the food that we not only need, but have the luxury to enjoy. Walking into Meijer, we see no shortage of food. Maybe they’re out of your favorite brand of salsa, but there’s always something else similar for you to choose. Other countries, like Venezuela, currently don’t have that sort of comfort. To end this on a more positive note, not all cooking shows are so bad. Rachel Ray either allows the show’s staff and/ or audience to enjoy the food she makes, and if possible, donates leftover food to charities and soup kitchens. If more cooking shows were like this, maybe then I wouldn’t feel so negatively about them. I think there’s a duty that comes with excess, wealth, and abundance. This duty is to share with those less fortunate than one’s self. Many of these cooking shows do not seem to be doing that. With so many going hungry, I feel it is almost a crime to wantonly waste food so. But what do I know? //

SUPER FREAK FLAME // SOUND CHECK

written by: James Piccininni / Photos by Jimi Sweet

Le Disco Social, the new EP from the dance music super group Company Freak is a throwback to 1970s disco—yet with a modern flair being compared to Daft Punk. The EP is made up of seven retro tracks, including “Andre Leon Talley”(the dance-floor anthem that celebrates individualism and pays tribute to the Vogue Magazine icon) and a remake of Sylvester’s “Do Ya Wanna Funk.”

“I GREW UP ON DISCO [...] BACK WHEN MUSIC ON THE RADIO HAD ARRANGEMENT, STRUCTURE, DRAMA, SOPHISTICATION, AND STYLE. I WANTED TO BRING THAT BACK.”

“I grew up on disco,” explains lead singer Jason King. “Back when music on the radio had arrangement, structure, drama, sophistication, and style. I wanted to bring that back.”

PHOTOS BY JIMI SWEET

Le Disco Social’s sound recalls the freewheeling sounds of Studio 54 and the Paradise Garage when bands like Chic and Midnight Star ruled the airwaves and the dance floor.

22//

JUNE 2014

The concluding track on Le Disco Social is the midtempo ballad, “Seasons Change.” According to King, all the great disco albums of the past had at least one ballad. “The song has that early 1980s Prince/Minneapolis sound,” adds King. “It’s wistful and a great way to end the album.”

The EP begins with a spirited theme song. “I wanted a big, bold, cinematic statement to open the record,” says King. “Something that announced that we are here!” Once whisked into the world of Company Freak, listeners are catapulted on a funk-a-licious ride through “Andre Leon Talley” and “Sexaholic,” followed by “Istanbul Disco,” a song King recorded while visiting Turkey. It features an incredible introduction played on a Turkish instrument called a kanun.

Ultimately, the idea for the EP was to bring people together through music, dance and good feelings. “That is why we named the record Le Disco Social,” King says. “It’s a global dance party.”

From there, listeners are drawn into an innovative re-imagining of Sylvester’s “Do Ya Wanna Funk,” with vocals by Shayna Steele from NBC’s Smash. Then it’s on to “Crackdown,” a song King penned as a nod to that segment of funk that took on seventies politics. “I wanted a track that captured the feeling of unease and mistrust people felt toward their governments. I think it’s applicable to a lot of different national contexts: crackdowns are happening everywhere even now.”

Company Freak’s debut full-length album is slated for release by the end of the year. For more information, visit http://companyfreak.com. //
