FLAME Interviews:

Written by: Peter Rayes Interview by: Peter Hendrickson Photo by: Nick Lovell

Straight from Rochester, New York, Pandora Boxx was a force to be reckoned with in the second season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” where he was ultimately eliminated in one of the most controversial eliminations to date. Despite not winning the competition, fans voted Pandora Boxx “Miss Congeniality” of Season 2. After the second season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Pandora went on to become a drag professor in the first two seasons of “RuPaul’s Drag U,” for which fans voted Pandora “MVP” of both seasons. Pandora continued to entertain fans, hosting the drag queen comedy show, “One Night Stand Up: Dragtastic NYC.” Although Pandora has achieved international recognition and has been performing for more than 10 years, in Pandora’s ALL STAR Interview on LogoTV.com, he said he “…kind of feels like the Jan Brady of ‘Drag Race.’” Pandora narrowly came in second place during the Fan’s Choice Vote, but the fans’ #1 choice, Sharon Needles, ultimately chose to forgo the invitation, after winning the most recent season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” to enjoy his time as America’s current reigning Drag Superstar. Whether you consider Pandora Boxx the Susan Lucci of “Drag Race” or the Jan Brady of the same, we all know that this fan-favorite has most definitely upped his drag swag, consistently serving America with fashion-forward appeal, beauty, and humor. Chad Michaels, Yara Sofia, Jujubee, Nina Flowers, Mimi Imfurst, Manila Luzon, Shannel, Alexis Mateo, Tammie Brown, Raven, and Latrice Royale will join Pandora Boxx in the ultimate drag competition, “RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race,” which premieres on Logo on October 22nd, “…to determine who will be crowned the queen of all queens.” Pandora Boxx is set to perform live in Detroit, but before we get to meet Pandora at Menjo’s on Thursday, September 20th, we got to ask him some questions to get a glimpse of the personality to come before us. So as to not risk the consequences of opening Pandora’s Boxx, we kept it short and simple: What/who inspired you to become Pandora Boxx? Pandora is the illegitimate child of Weird Al Yankovic and Janice from The Muppets. I think that explains it all. You are one of the busiest queens to come out of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” What has been one of your major highlights? I’m too busy to answer this question. Out of all the cities you’ve visited, which one is your favorite? I’ve loved every city I’ve visited. People have been so amazing to me. It’s an incredible feeling. Plus, I want to get rebooked in each city so I can’t pick just one favorite. Where would you like to see Pandora Boxx in 5 years? Not in prison. Competition is going to be fierce on the “All Stars Drag Race” show- What can we expect to see? What’s new in your BOXX? I’ve had vaginal rejuvenation done so it’s all fresh and new. As a new voice to young gays and lesbians, what would you like to share with them? Eat your vegetables, stay true to yourself and shake that money maker. What one thing would your fans be SHOCKED to know about Pandora Boxx? I actually do eat solid foods. Detroit is major Rock ‘n’ Roll party city, and we are definitely going to blow it up when you arrive. Is there anything we should be warned about? My Boxx has been known to ignite when placed near a flaming homosexual. Do you have a particular character that you love performing as? Pandora is a character. I like being her.

Creative, energetic, random, and full of ideas are only a few words to describe one of Detroit’s most recognizable club promoters. Until recently, Nicholas George had been actively promoting some of Detroit’s hottest parties and nightclubs, so it seemed only appropriate to shine a little light on him. Nicholas George got his start while working at Ice Nightclub in Hamtramck. Back in the days of Myspace, he would post events and parties on the Ice MySpace page in hopes that the community would want to come and partake. The rest is history. With Nicholas George relocating to San Francisco last month, we wanted to catch up with him to find out what’s in store for him and his future!

What made you want to do club promotions?

What advice would you give to future promoters?

I didn’t! At the time that I was managing Ice in 2005/2006, I would post parties via MySpace and it kind of stuck. People just began to associate me with party promotions.

TAKE RISKS!!! Try things out and don’t be afraid to fail! Don’t do simple markets, either. Detroit is a tough crowd and gets bored easily, so you’re going to have to keep them on their toes. Network every day and know that Facebook and advertisements are not enough. You’ve got to reach out to the people and make hype choices so people want to come and party.

How long have you been doing promotions? Six years with clubs like Ice and Backstreet. If your life was a party, who would you want to promote it? What would be the theme? My life is a party and I’d promote it myself! I want a versatile theme, though. What do you think is the best promo job you’ve done? I have two. [Rapper] Cazwell at Ice was a big hit! It was right after he released his single “Ice Cream Truck” and there was a line around the block. Also, New York was a good party. The Woodward crowd came to see her on Friday and then we had her again at Ice on Saturday. Who has been your favorite celebrity guest and why? My favorite guest would have to be Brent Everett. He really knows how to party!

Do you consider club promotion to be a career? I’ll always be a promoter at heart, but school always comes first. I’m currently going to school for Criminal Justice. What’s the hardest part about leaving Michigan? Starting completely over! Meeting new people is always tough. I’m in random cities and you don’t know what’s acceptable or not. There are SO many hills and you can’t do any Michigan lefts, so if you miss your exit you’re screwed! When you come back to visit, what will be the next party you throw? First, I’d like to work with Menjo’s and Pronto, and definitely do some cool themes or even get a cool celebrity. If I’m lucky, I’ll run into Lance Bass and tell him Detroit loves to party! Post-Olympics, would you be on Team Jake Dalton or Team Ryan Lochte? To be honest I didn’t watch the Olympics. Hold on let me look them up…. [He looks.] BOTH!! With a side of Michael Phelps ‘cause he’s a fellow 420er!

As we get to know the girls we see that they all have some issues, such as Regan’s need to be in control and Katie’s incessant partying. There are some old wounds that are poked at, including a major event in Gena’s past involving ex-boyfriend, now groomsman Clyde (Scott), whom she considers to be the person that ruined her life.

Unlike the raucous comedy of

Bachelorette is smart, hip, and modern without being pretentious – A great date movie – and a great excuse to see Andrew Rannells (Book Of Mormon, The New Normal) in silver boy shorts.
