FLAME // AT THE MOVIES WITH DOROTHY

The November Man In Theaters August 27, 2014 Rating: 4/5 Stars Peter Devereaux (Brosnan) is a retired ex-CIA operative. He’s been out of the game at least five years when he’s asked by his old handler to bring in a possible asset: someone who has vital information about the man who stands to become Russia’s next president. This information could be helpful to the U.S. and the CIA wants it. Things get complicated when the asset turns out to be Peter’s old flame. They send him to bring her in, but she gets discovered. As she tries to flee with Devereaux’s help, she is assassinated. She is taken out by Peter’s former protégé, David Mason (Luke Bracey). He and Peter parted ways five years ago because of a mission that had gone wrong resulting in the killing of an innocent child bystander. Peter discovers that the information that the asset had is only the tip of the iceberg leading to another person, Alice Fournier (Olga Kurylenko). She has damaging knowledge and the agency knows it, so they give Dave the contract to take Peter out. It then becomes a twisted game of cat and mouse between master and student, but there are other complication that leave both of them wondering who to trust in this shell game between the Russian government and the CIA. Pierce Brosnan fits the role of the aging bad-ass very well in this taut spy thriller. Pierce’s production company, Irish DreamTime, had optioned this story at least seven years ago, but the production got halted until recently. It seems

06//

SEPTMEBR 2014

that Pierce hasn’t lost a step from his days as 007. Although there are a couple of scenes where his hands may be a little shaky, he’s still slick and untouchable. This role suits him well and is an extension of what we would come to expect if Pierce had continued to play James Bond. Brosnan is older, but wiser here as he takes is former protege to task, urging him to be a better man—not just a machine that reacts without emotion. There’s great action here. A lot of bodies on the ground, but what drives this film is the thrilling psychological game between mentor and protégée, and who you can and can’t trust. Oh, sure, it’s a little stilted in places, but not as predictable as you might think. There are definitely some surprising plot twists that you might not see coming. This is a good popcorn movie to pass the time, but I don’t think it’s a must see right away. You’d do just as well when it hits Netflix, but if you’re looking for a time waster, this isn’t too bad.

Xelle Breaks a “Sweat” FLAME // SOUND CHECK

Heating Up the Dance Floor With A Blazing Hot power Anthem written by Mark Dawson Summer may be over but XELLE aims to make this September the hottest month of the year with their exciting new single release. “Sweat” is a little bit dirty, a little bit naughty, and a whole lot of fun. It’s got the high-gloss pop sheen of a Britney track with the powerhouse vocals fans of the girl group best known for throwing an illegal dance party on a moving NYC subway train have come to expect. “It’s what’s playing in your mind when you see that hot guy or girl across the bar and you know it’s time to make a move,” says Rony G, one of the dance floor divas that fronts XELLE. “It is all about flirting, feeling sexy and confident, and giving in to your romantic desires,” adds JC Cassis, the other half of the energetic duo. “Sweat” is available exclusively on iTunes September 16. “‘Sweat’ makes playful, suggestive connotations that will inspire some physical action,” continues Cassis, “but there is a deeper meaning to the song too. As curvy women, we wanted to take on the themes of fitness, body image, and feeling beautiful just as you are. We work out and eat healthily, but we’ve still got our curves—and we know we’re not the only ones. ” “You don’t have to have that stereotypical ‘perfect body’ to be fierce,” adds Rony G. “Watch us with our dancers in the video and you’ll see what we mean!” Written by Zach Adam and Lisa Greene (who has penned hits for Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue), the track builds on the band’s previous releases, songs like

“You don’t have to have that stereotypical ‘perfect body’ to be fierce.”

“Queen” and “Hologram,” all of which centered on having fun by mixing high-energy vocals and danceable beats with powerful synth rhythms. However, “Sweat” takes it one step further. It’s sassier, frolicsome, more colorful, and slightly off-the-wall. The video parodies the aerobics culture: ridiculous exercise classes and the terrible late-night fitness infomercials of the eighties. XELLE cast Brett Azar as the hot, bodybuilding Tony Little-esque instructor. They also brought on a fierce group of curvy jazzercise dancers and called on celebrity friends like Bianca Del Rio, Courtney Stodden, Andrew W. K., and Sherry Vine to make cameos. Designer Geoffrey Mac created the insane costumes and the hair design is by Wigbar. NYC drag star Marti Gould Cummings also appears as the catalyst for the surprise twist ending! “Fitness is a good thing, but obsessing over perfection, or superficial things like how you look, can be a problem, especially for those doing harmful things to try to look like the unattainable, photo-shopped super models we see in magazines and on television,” says Rony G. “It’s important to remember that whatever type you are, or look you’re sportin’, somebody’s into it.” XELLE is an all-girl group that came out of the gay men’s nightlife scene. It formed four years ago when singersongwriters JC Cassis and Rony G and producer Zach Adam (who has produced numerous number one hits in

“We want to be the role models we didn’t have growing up,” says Rony G. “We aim to inspire our fans to do what they want to do in their lives no matter what society says about it. ” “Sweat” was mixed by Ryan West (Eminem, Rihanna, Martha Wash) and mastered by Joe Lambert. The first official remix was produced by elite remixers, NovoGain. “The message behind everything we do is to celebrate and love yourself for who you are. ” Sweat released exclusively on iTunes September 16th. Europe and Asia) united with the idea to create a band that combined the sass of TLC with the fun of The Spice Girls and the timeless pop excellence of ABBA. “We call our sound Megapop, because it’s everything you love about pop music, turned up all the way,” says Cassis. Together with Zach Adam, the group has unleashed a slew of jaw-dropping songs and music videos. Their last single, “Red Flag”, was a call-to-action, meant to inspire fans to stand up to people like Russian President Vladimir Putin and New Jersey governor Chris Christie (who, at the time of the release, was petitioning his state’s court to repeal their ruling allowing gay marriage). XELLE has a strong fan base in the LGBT Community and beyond, and they have headlined festivals and clubs all across the U.S., sharing the stage with Salt ‘n’ Pepa, Joan Rivers, Mya, Deborah Cox, Lil’ Kim and more.

Leather EXPO VI

Menjo’s Harnesses Detroit’s Leather Community Written by Tony Lowe | Photos by Tony Lowe

A lot has been happened in Detroit’s bar scene recently, and not always in the most positive of light, but this month’s feature is quite the opposite. Tim McKee and Mike Shannon recently took control of one of the gems in our community and made it better. With a recent revamp of Menjo’s as we know it, it has truly come to embody its name, the Menjo’s Complex. With Leather Expo VI, a popular event being added to the bar’s roster, it is among a long list of new additions to the repertoire of a reborn legend in the city.

Photos by Tony lowe

First thing’s first, what is Leather Expo, and what is it all about? Leather Expo was conceived to be an open event to all with a passionate interest in the leather lifestyle, whether you’re a seasoned vet or a casual—but interested— explorer.

FLAME // Feature: Leather Expo Vi

Is Leather Expo for just the leather-bound here in Detroit? Who can participate? Leather Expo and its two sisters, Bear Expo and Cowboy Expo, continue to expand as the years pass. They are all based in the metro Detroit area, the Midwest, and Canada, and as always, Leather Expo is open to everyone! Can you explain to us a bit about the leather culture? Well first of all let me state that I’m not an expert— from my standpoint it is as much about a mindset as it is about physicality and eroticism. Like many things in life, everyone takes away something different from it. I know I don’t own any leather; can I pick some up there? Since its inception, Leather Expo’s buy-sell-trade component offers many goods, both new and used, as well as merchandise from leather craftsmen and retailers in our very own community. Is Menjo’s going to be a part of the national leather competitions, like IML or ABW? Leather Expo, which is an Impish Event production, has played host to IML and MML winners. We welcome contestants from both the international level and our

wonderful local friends like Icon Detroit, who are hosting the opening night of Leather Expo VI, to their new home bar, Menjo’s. You guys have recently been developing Menjo’s into an actual complex. How is that going? Yes, Michael and I both are very happy to offer a vibrant nightclub reimagined, but again we have many local retailers and independents display their merchandise, as well as advertise, in the club. The entire complex will be in use for Leather Expo VI. Whereas previous expos have been held outdoors, this one will take place entirely within the Menjo’s Complex.

about Leather Expo or Menjo’s? Both Mike and I have always intended, with Leather Expo and all that we do at the new Menjo’s Complex, to create an open and inviting club scene to Detroit for Bear, Drag, Leather, and especially Dance all under one roof. That’s why we call it, “Menjo’s – A Legend. Reimagined.” //

What other big events do you guys have planned?

Photos by Tony lowe

We do have many big events coming up! Just to name a few, we have the return of the Legend Series with the Lady T. Tempest in October and December featuring Miss Natalie Cole and the fabulous Nikki Stevens respectively; our superherothemed Hard Heroes 2 event featuring a hero vs. villain wrestling match; the 12 Kinks of Christmas unofficial expo. Of course there are many other parties planned, including Fierce Hot Mess, Arabian Nights, and Sir/Boy Contests, along with our themed Saturday night parties with local clubs, organizations, and longtime friends. Is there anything else you would like us to know

I wanted to tell that young lady a thing or two, but my daughter would have been upset with me for causing a scene. Help! —Mother Of The Bride Dear To Hell With Your Damn Daughter And Tell Me More About Your Sexy Gay Son, Ummm... perhaps your daughter is a goddamn super freak in the bedroom and her friend just thought she’d give her a gift that wouldn’t get returned. And if your daughter doesn’t want it, I suggest you take it, because you are one uptight bitch! Next!

Next time y’all fuck, stick a giant sized dong up his ass... and give that mothafuckah something to really scream about!

Dear Miss Tiger, My boyfriend used to fuck for hours. He’s gotten so lazy that we finish in ten minutes. Maybe he just needs his battery recharged? —Justin Dear Get Yourself Some New Dick,

IMy boyfriend asked me to wear a strap-on dildo and fuck him. None of my prior boyfriends ever asked me to do that! Should I be concerned that he might be gay or bisexual? —Jeanette Dear What Woman Wouldn’t Want To Stick It To A Son-OfA-Bitch, No need to be overly concerned unless he asks you to do it while he simultaneously deep throats his best friend’s cock! Next!

Darling, it looks like the only battery that needs recharged is the one on your vibrating dildo!

Need advice? Write me... or ask your questions during “The Derek and Romaine Show” on SiriusXM OutQ Channel 106—September 15th 9pm ET. Its Favorite Bitch ... LIVE and ready for bullshit!

Dear Miss Tiger, I was stationed in Japan and bought a sex toy that looks like corn on the cob. The other night I was riding it and thought of my cousin. I guess maybe because we both grew up on a farm? I’m buying a new dildo right away! But now I’m afraid that I’ll have those same thoughts about my cousin again. Is this weird? —Private First Class Dear Cream Of Corn, One thing I know for sure is that Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell definitely applied to bullshit such as this! Private, unless you were molested in a cornfield by your kissin’ cousin (and loved every minute of it) ... then yes, it’s totally fucked up! 14//

Robin Williams:

Laughter to Hide the Pain Written by Joan Stevenson The recent death of comedian, actor, humanitarian Robin Williams has come as a shocking blow to the world. This man meant a great deal to me as I’m sure he has to many of you. I am still reeling from this tragedy. This mad clown with an open heart touched so many lives. He inspired us to think, to live, to love, to laugh. As we try to make sense of why such a brilliant talent was taken from us, we’re left with many questions. The most asked is, “Why?” Why would someone so funny and so seemingly clear-headed and joyful with such an altruistic world view want to take his own life? From Robin Williams’ beginnings as a stand up comic, he captivated audiences who could barely keep up with his timing and his wit. He then went on to conquer television in the mid ’70s on the top-rated sitcom Mork & Mindy. From there he graduated to even bigger stand-up gigs, and then on to movies, winning praise with a Golden Globe for best actor for his work in The Fisher King and the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in Good Will Hunting. And who can forget his tour de force turn as the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin. He raised funds to care for the homeless with Comic Relief. He was a supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and he has entertained troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Robin played zany, manic characters. He played creepy, even evil characters. He played down to earth characters. Robin Williams played characters that pushed the boundaries, challenged authority, and tasked people to think for themselves. There was nothing fake or phony about him. No matter what role he portrayed, he gave you truth with both barrels. Nothing was held back or hidden—nothing except his inner turmoil. Robin had been struggling with feelings of loneliness ever since he was a child. Both of his parents worked, so he spent most of his time alone resulting in abandonment issues. He has said of his childhood: “My only companions, my only friends as a child were my imagination.” He was shy and withdrawn. He was bullied in school. His family moved periodically so making friends was difficult. Robin only started to come out of his shell in high school when he discovered he had a talent for acting, which got him a full scholarship to Juilliard. After he left Juilliard, he began his comedy career and so met the world. Living the life of a stand up comic in L.A., Robin got caught up in the free-and-easy drug culture of the early ’70s, which included that new party drug on the rise, cocaine. Admittedly, Robin never indulged when he was on stage, for it was then his brain was fueled by the excitement of imagination and creativity. At those times, he never felt alone—he felt loved and alive. Being on stage was what made Robin happy, but when he came off stage, that was when the anxiety, loneliness, and fear crept in. Drugs and alcohol became his coping mechanism. Robin fought these demons for years, and he might have succumbed to them back then, but two

16//

SEPTEMBER 2014

things gave Robin a wake up call: the birth of his son Zachary and the death of another great comedic talent, John Belushi. Robin was partying with Belushi just hours before John was given the injection of heroin and cocaine that ended his life. Robin got clean and sober, and he remained that way for at least twenty years. But while making a film in 2003, Robin began drinking again. In 2006, he checked into a rehab facility to combat his drinking and publicly acknowledged his alcoholism. After that stint in rehab, Robin continued to work and walk a sober path, but his inner battle with depression continued. As he kept us laughing, the world never knew what he was fighting. Most people do not understand what it’s like to be deeply depressed. They think it’s something that you can just shake off and keep going. No. Depression is not something that can simply be put off. Comedian Ricky Gervais recently tweeted to someone commenting about Robin’s depression: “Telling people with depression to ‘just snap out of it’ is about as useful as telling people with cancer to ‘just stop having cancer.” For many suffering with depression, myself included, it is something that is with you all the time, you just manage it. For some that includes medication, for others not. You just manage the degree of how it affects your life from day to day, or moment to moment. Some times it is barely noticeable and sometimes it can be overwhelming to the point where you just want to scream at the top of your lungs and never stop. You don’t know what it is, but you just know that there’s something terribly wrong and you don’t know how to fix it. You just feel alone and scared and in pain and you just want it to stop. Alcohol and drugs may provide temporary relief or distraction, but relying on them is a recipe for disaster. On August 11, 2014, Robin decided that the pain had been enough. …

FLAME // BECOME WHO YOU ARE

What It Means to Become Who You Are Written by Austin VanKirk

By the time you pick up this magazine, I will be in Washington state. That’s right folks—I’ve left Detroit. I’m attending graduate school at Western Washington University to pursue a creative writing MFA. The university is located in the seaside city of Bellingham, which is about an hour and a half north of Seattle and an hour south of Vancouver. As I write this, I’m realizing how sad I am that I must leave Detroit and Michigan. I’ve lived in the state all my life. Sure, the weather sucks sometimes and the state government is screwed up, but there’s still a sentimental value for me here. I went to college here, got my first job here, made all my friends here, and survived high school here. Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to move to the Pacific Northwest. The mountains, the ocean, the forests— basically nature in abundance—all in close proximity to major U.S. cities and thriving gay communities, is what kept me captivated. Not only am I moving to this area, but I get to study and participate in my passion for creative writing. This opportunity feels surreal. I’m still having a difficult time grasping that these things I’ve pursued for so long are finally coming to me. Through persistence, hard work, and no small degree of charm, I’ve reached this point. And all of you reading this are probably thinking, “Cool story, bro. What does this mean for me?”

What I’m getting at here is that, like the name of this column, “Become Who You Are,” I believe I am finally becoming who I am, or maybe who I am supposed to be. I’m thinking, reader, that by applying these same principles of persistence and hard work, you can also become who you are. As I reread that last sentence, I feel like an evangelical preacher (You too can be saved!) or an over-enthusiastic infomercial salesman (Now you too can experience the joys of this product for only three easy payments of $24.95). Still, becoming who you are is an idea that, I feel, means you are the sum of your surroundings. If you surround yourself with positive people and smart choices—otherwise crafting an environment that is conducive to your wellbeing— you will become who you are, or perhaps, who you are meant to be. The idea of “becoming who you are,” is drawing into yourself your surroundings. The people and situations around you are ultimately what shape who you are. By choosing to to be with positive people and place yourself in personally advantageous situations, you are positioning yourself to achieve your goals, and, in essence, become who you are. But what do I know? / /

To help Flame out while I am way at school being otherwise preoccupied with reading and writing, we’ve taken on two new interns. Rachel, our new digital editor, is responsible for monthly website maintenance and bringing to you online content . LeeAnn, brought on as a media relations coordinator, is responsible with bringing you the latest news from Detroit and beyond. Both are students at Michigan State University and are located in the greater Lansing area. I’d like to briefly introduce you to them here. As an avid reader, a music lover, and a Netflix marathoning champion, LeeAnn is enthusiastic about media in all of its forms. She was born and raised in Metro Detroit, and loves family barbecues and college football games. A creative writer at heart, Rachel’s ultimate career objective is to be a successful, published author. Apart from writing, she has a passion for editing. A good portion of her time is spent watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with her stepson, but nevertheless she is inspired by him every day to keep working toward her goal—becoming who she is, so to speak.
