MEN’S FASHION

The Parisians A Field Guide to Men’s Style Ines de la Fressange and Sophie Gachet Photography by Benoît Peverelli At last, model and designer Ines de la Fressange and fashion journalist Sophie Gachet have curated an essential guide of sartorial advice for men, based on looks from their stylish entourage. From fashion and grooming tips to wardrobe essentials, Ines de la Fressange and Sophie Gachet reveal—with humor and fashion-insider savoir faire—the secrets of truly stylish men. While Parisian style for women has been widely dissected and appropriated, the authors of the New York Times bestseller Parisian Chic have written the first complete and practical sartorial guide for all men.   Attention to detail is key to a great look, and the authors demystify how to select accessories, from wristwatches, belts, and bags to hats, socks, and shoes. Step-by-step instructions for five different tie knots take men from casual to black tie with pizazz. They outline fifteen things every man needs in his closet, and seven items to be banished forever.   Complete with advice on color, cut, and the fashion faux pas to avoid, this must-have field guide is essential reading to show every man how to navigate the runway of life with style and panache. Ines de la Fressange, a runway model in the 1980s, was selected by Karl Lagerfeld as the “face” of Chanel. The essence of Parisian style and elegance, she is creative consultant for Roger Vivier, designs a line for Uniqlo, and is art director of her own brand and boutique Ines de la Fressange Paris. Sophie Gachet is a seasoned fashion journalist for Elle and veritable trend barometer. Together they have coauthored the New York Times bestseller Parisian Chic, which was published in seventeen languages, Parisian Chic City Guide, and Parisian Chic Look Book.

HC with jacket 280 pp., 300 color illus. 9 × 10 ¾ in. (23 × 27.5 cm) ISBN: 978-2-08-020341-0 US $85/Can. $115/£65/75 € Europe: January 2018 North America: March 2018

Published in partnership with the prestigious Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, this book presents a panorama of the most beautiful timepieces from the Middle Ages to the present. This lavishly illustrated volume contains a selection of nearly two hundred wonders—from mechanical and pendulum clocks to pocket and wristwatches. The timepieces are annotated by an expert horology historian and accompanied by a text that elucidates the cultural and artistic contexts in which they were created. As a counterpoint to the timepieces, extensive reproductions of artistic masterpieces provide perspective regarding the technical advances of each period and demonstrate the evolution of aesthetic tastes over time.   This unique book, an homage to a single instrument— so often conceived as a work of art—is intended as much for horology enthusiasts as for art and decorative-arts aficionados, history lovers, and collectors. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, established in 2005, is dedicated to safeguarding the fine watchmaking traditions. The FHH actively supports responsible business practices and works to combat counterfeiting in the industry. François Chaille has published many works with Flammarion, including Cartier: Creative Writing, the three volumes of The Cartier Collection (Jewelry, Timepieces, and Precious Objects), Audemars Piguet, and Girard Perregaux. Dominique Fléchon, a historian and expert on fine watchmaking, is the author of many specialist works, including Secrets of Vacheron Constantin and The Mastery of Time. Franco Cologni is chairman of the Cultural Council of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie and founder and president of The Cologni Foundation for the Métiers d’Art. He is renowned for his reference books on watchmaking and jewelry, including The Cartier Collection: Timepieces and The Cartier Tank Watch, his third volume on the iconic wristwatch.

Obsession: Marlene Dietrich The Pierre Passebon Collection Henry-Jean Servat Parisian gallery owner, antiques dealer, and style taste maker Pierre Passebon curates his favorite portraits of Marlene Dietrich by world-class photographers in this exquisite cloth-bound volume. Featuring rare images from Pierre Passebon’s personal collection, this volume celebrates Marlene Dietrich, Hollywood’s iconic femme fatale, as immortalized by master photographers including Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Cecil Beaton, Milton Greene, George Hurrell, and others. An active participant in her photo sessions, she constructed her own unique image of charm and seduction.   Dietrich’s unconventional beauty and lifestyle reigned supreme over the cinema, stage, and concert hall for more than forty years. The public loved her. A modern and transgressive woman, she didn’t hesitate to break the rules, by dressing in menswear—she was Yves Saint Laurent’s muse for his iconic tuxedos—or by being seen in public with her husband and her lovers (both male and female). Raising her daughter in the limelight, Dietrich also refused to bend to Hollywood conventions around keeping motherhood out of sight.   Her allure, style, and elegance made her the archetypal siren, but it was Dietrich’s unwavering confidence, gender fluidity, and firm stand against Nazism that made her a revolutionary and an icon. This volume reveals how her fascination lies not only in the way she inspired the greatest photographers and fashion designers of her time, but in how she continues to embody the essence of glamour and female independence today. Journalist Henry-Jean Servat worked successively at the French daily newspapers Midi Libre and Libération and at Paris Match for twenty-five years; he appears regularly on several French television channels, including France 2 and France 3. He wrote Brigitte Bardot: My Life in Fashion (Flammarion, 2016).

Résonances de Cartier High Jewelry and Precious Objects François Chaille Discover the exceptional new creations, destined for eminent clients and collectors, from the world’s most prestigious jeweler.

HC with jacket 296 pp. 215 color illus. 10 × 11 ¾ in. (25.5 × 30 cm) ISBN: 978-2-08-020340-3 US $125/Can. $170/£80/95 € Publication: February 2018 (Early Release in Europe: October 2017)

Devoted to the new high jewelry and precious objects collection created by Cartier, this book celebrates the house’s vocation: to sublimate the stones and reveal their personality through unique pieces. Each gem impels the design to follow its own rhythm, and the play of lines and precious materials harmonize with its tempo. Cadence or undulation, staccato or fluidity, frenzy or tranquility, Cartier’s new creations transcribe a dual universe of force and grace.   It’s a collection rich in colors, themes, and evocations, where excellence is manifest in each piece—from the twinkling of diamonds to the charm of the emerald, and from geometrically structured compositions to the lifelike bestiary. François Chaille is an expert on art history, fashion, jewelry, and watchmaking. He has published numerous works with Flammarion, including Cartier: Creative Writing, The Cartier Collection: Timepieces, Audemars Piguet: Master Watchmaker Since 1875, and Girard-Perregaux.

Contemporary French Living Casa Lopez Pierre Sauvage with Fabienne Reybaud Photography by Vincent Thibert Pierre Sauvage’s first book introduces his French Bohemian-chic philosophy for living with style through his contemporary interiors—both urban and country—and recipes for elegant entertaining. Against the backdrop of his exceptional homes in Paris, Normandy, and the South of France, Pierre Sauvage— director of Casa Lopez, the legendary Parisian housewares purveyor—showcases his very personal and contemporary style of decorating and entertaining. His striking use of color sets the tone for each room and serves as a counterpoint to his playful matchings of materials and patterns. With discriminating taste, Sauvage pairs new designs for occasional furniture with singular antiques or hand-painted table settings from Provence and Andalusia with cut crystal decanters.   From bold interiors to elegant gardens and outdoor living spaces, each home is infused with his connoisseur’s eye for luxury details. Stunning photography commissioned especially for this book under Sauvage’s art direction provides inspiration for creating interiors that exude a charm and elegance that is decidedly contemporary, yet conveys the timeless allure of a home that has been passed down over generations. Pierre Sauvage spent fourteen years in public relations in Paris, representing prestigious luxury clients such as Tiffany, Mauboussin, Plaza Athénée, Frédéric Malle perfumes, the Hotel Meurice, and The Comité Colbert. In 2014, he acquired Casa Lopez, a bespoke carpet and decorative home accessories firm founded in the 1980s that embodies elegant French country style. Fabienne Reybaud is a journalist for Le Figaro, specialized in the luxury industry. Vincent Thibert is a lifestyle photographer whose work regularly appears in magazines such as Architectural Digest and Elle Décor.

Château de Villette The Restoration of a French Masterpiece Guillaume Picon Photography by Bruno Ehrs This intimate tour evokes the lifestyle of eighteenthcentury French nobility and provides a lesson in the art and technique of historic house and garden restoration.

HC with jacket 240 pp., 150 color illus. 9 ½ × 12 ¼ in. (24 × 31 cm) ISBN: 978-2-08-020358-8 US $75/Can. $100/£55/60 € Europe: May 2018 North America: September 2018

The Château de Villette was built in Condécourt outside of Paris at the end of the seventeenth century according to the plans of Louis XIV’s architect Jules HardouinMansart and surrounded by luscious formal gardens designed by Le Nôtre. Its magnificent artistic and artisanal heritage has been carefully preserved and restored by the current owners and enhanced by Jacques Garcia’s recent renovation. With its magnificent hexagonal hall, Château de Villette boasts the first formal dining room conceived for a French château, complete with carved stone buffets and corner fountains. Other rooms have been enhanced with fabulous silks rewoven in Lyon, and furnished with a world-class collection of seventeenth- and eighteenthcentury furniture and paintings. The gardens, with their shaded bosquets, sculptures, obelisks, and cascading water features have been restored according to their original designs. The privately-owned château was classified as a historical monument in 1942, and has been the scene of numerous films, including The Da Vinci Code. Guillaume Picon, historian, editor, and curator, is the author of A Day at Château de Fontainebleau (2016) and Versailles: A Private Invitation (2011), published by Flammarion, and several books on French history and painting. Bruno Ehrs is one of Sweden’s leading photographers. Villa Balbiano Paradise Restored on Lake Como Rubin Modigliani Photography by Bruno Ehrs This volume recounts the centuries-long history of Villa Balbiano, a magnificent architectural masterpiece meticulously restored by Jacques Garcia. From its prominent position on Lake Como, Villa Balbiano radiates a majestic charm emblematic of the most splendid chapter in the history of great villas in the idyllic Italian region. Each successive owner brought new splendor to the villa through additions, new frescoes and statues, and increasingly extensive and sumptuous gardens. The villa’s history reached an acme at the end of the eighteenth century, when the enlightened Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, as master of the house, transformed Villa Balbiano into a crucible of philosophy and art, framed within the villa’s archetypical Roman lines.   Today, esteemed interior architect Jacques Garcia has undertaken painstaking restoration work that combines a stunning array of precious materials and a worldclass collection of paintings and antique furnishings set against the backdrop of the original design that had been obscured over the centuries. The glorious new restoration inaugurates a new season in the life of the villa in one of the world’s most glamorous locations. Ruben Modigliani, is chief editorial writer for AD Italia. An authority on the history of architecture and taste, he has served on the editorial staff of Elle Decor, Grazia Casa, and Italia D la Repubblica delle Donne. ART MONOGRAPH

Berthe Morisot Jean-Dominique Rey Foreword by Sylvie Patry A highly personal account of the life and works of the most influential female Impressionist painter. Berthe Morisot won over the Impressionists with her talent and became the first woman of the group alongside Monet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, and Sisley. In this tribute to Morisot, citations from the greatest writers of her time offer an intimate portrait of the artist and her work. Morisot’s paintings demonstrate how prescient she was when she created them, pioneering a new style of painting. However, she was underestimated for more than a century—most probably because she was a woman.   Including rare correspondence with key members of the Impressionist movement, this text focuses on key stages of Morisot’s career, including her first participation in the Salon de Paris at the age of twenty-three in 1864, her marriage in 1874 to Manet’s brother, Eugène, and the birth of their daughter, Julie Manet, who became the subject of many of Morisot’s subsequent paintings.   This book is an essential read for understanding the Impressionist artists and the history of women in art.   A major exhibition dedicated to the artist, Berthe Morisot: Woman Impressionist, will open in 2018 at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts de Québec (June) and the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia (October), and will continue in 2019 at the Dallas Museum of Art (February) and the Musée d’Orsay (summer). Jean-Dominique Rey, art historian and writer, has curated numerous exhibitions and published several essays and books, including Monet: Water Lilies. Sylvie Patry is deputy director for collections and exhibitions and Gund Family Chief Curator at the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia.

PB with open spine Swiss binding and laser-cut Frenchfold jacket, five color printing on three different paper stocks 208 pp., 300 color illus. 9 1/2 × 12 ¼ in. (24 × 31 cm) ISBN: 978-2-08-020338-0 US $75/Can. $100/£55/65 € Publication: February 2018 (Early Release in Europe: November 2017)

A veritable dialogue between the Alpine A110 sports car and the artists and writers who pay homage to it through photographs, art, and text, this book captures the model’s sensual mechanics, masterful agility, and esprit de corps.   The guiding force behind Jean Rédélé’s creation of the Alpine in 1955 was a love of the road and a passion for driving. Alpine’s story is punctuated by competitions and the thrilling driving experience of this renowned car that was named after the sinuous roads of the Alps.   After two decades of slumber, Alpine—fortified by its legendary backstory—was revived as the model A110. Rooted in history, but decidedly turned toward the future, the new Alpine embodies higher performance, is more compact and agile than ever, and deftly combines ultracontemporary design with classic French elegance. Gilles Uzan and Jean-Luc Fournier are journalists specialized in the automotive industry. Monica Sabolo is a prize-winning fiction writer.
