SYNOPSIS

Elise (Veerle Baetens) and Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) fall in love at first sight. She has her own tattoo shop and he plays the banjo in a bluegrass band. They bond over their shared enthusiasm for American music and culture, and dive headfirst into a sweeping romance that plays out on and off stage — but when an unexpected tragedy hits their new family, everything they know and love is tested. An intensely moving portrait of a relationship from beginning to end, propelled by a soundtrack of foot-stomping bluegrass, The Broken Circle Breakdown is a romantic melodrama of the highest order.

DIRECTOR’S ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT The Broken Circle Breakdown is an adaptation of a stage play by Johan Heldenbergh. Johan is a friend and I’ve worked with him as an actor on two of my previous films. When I saw his play I was totally flabbergasted. The combination of the personal story, the music, and the theme (reason vs religion) just blew me away. I knew for sure: this is sublime but can’t be filmed. It had so many layers. I had the feeling that I would never be able to translate them into a film. I went to see it a second time and then I let the idea well alone for six months. Then, one day, my producer Dirk Impens and I re-read the play. We thought that it was just too good to leave on the shelf. That’s when we decided to join forces and go all out to do something with it. I began working on the script, together with screenwriter Carl Joos. It was a pretty complex story and we had to start over a couple of times, but eventually we cracked it.

LOVE AND LOSS The story covers many emotions and is narrated in various layers. It’s about the love between two people who are extremely different, and about loss. The film recounts how difficult it is for both our protagonists to accept their daughter’s illness. Didier conceals his sorrow with great principles and theories, Elise escapes into symbolism, religion and superstition. As long as things are going well, these opposing views on life are a source of amusement for Elise and Didier, or at most they lead to heated discussions. However, once their inner selves are torn apart by events, their diametrically opposed views result in a dramatic conflict. In the end, Elise and Didier lose themselves as well as each other. STRUCTURE The structure of The Broken Circle Breakdown was created during editing. It was always the idea to cross-cut between different times in the lives of Didier and Elise, but the concept of the script was different from how it ended up in the final film. This has been the case with almost all of my films. My editor and longtime collaborator Nico Leunen is a real magician with this kind of storytelling, and my films have benefitted a lot from it. The main reason, I guess, is that my films are not plotted for the story but follow emotions. And there are always a lot of things that work very differently on screen compared to how they looked on paper, so questioning all this during editing has become an unavoidable part of my filmmaking process.


STATEMENT


BLUEGRASS Didier and Elise play in a bluegrass band and that is no coincidence. Bluegrass is integrated in a variety of ways into the story and forms the intrinsic link between all the main issues that appear in the film: life, death, birth, America, motherhood and fatherhood, finding consolation, life after death... Music is also what unites the couple. We have tried to let the songs find their place in the scenario in a more organized manner and by doing so, give them the greatest possible dramatic impact. Sometimes a song is purely narrative and helps to tell the story or is even used as an ellipsis. In other places, we select a given song because it underpins the emotions. While writing the screenplay, we put in songs from the original play. But, as I got to know more and more bluegrass songs, other songs found their way into the script. Bjorn Eriksson composed the bluegrass songs and also created the score. Meeting Bjorn was very important for the film, in lots of ways. You have to know that a lot of bluegrass musicians are a little nerdy, but that is not how I saw Didier and Elise. Bjorn has been a bluegrass aficionado since he was 16. But he’s also a very cool guy, and so meeting him influenced not only the sound but also the look of the film. Bjorn conducted the recordings and guided Johan and Veerle’s perfomances to the max (they sing everything themselves!). Bjorn himself plays guitar. TATTOOS Elise’s tattoos were designed by Emilie La Perla, a Brussels-based tattoo designer I interviewed for research while preparing the film. It was a marvelous encounter, I learned a lot about tattooing and I loved her drawing style, so I asked her if she wanted to design them. The tattoos were mentioned in the play, but became a leitmotiv in the film. I guess it was just too nice not to actually see them and use them fully in the story.



FELIX VAN GROENINGEN DIRECTOR The Broken Circle Breakdown is Felix van Groeningen’s fourth feature film. After graduating from the KASK Film Academy in Ghent in 2000, Felix van Groeningen (°1977) made a few shorts and wrote and directed several stage plays. His 2009 film The Misfortunates, received it’s world premiere at Cannes’ Director’s Fortnight, and was both a critical and commercial success. The Broken Circle Breakdown also marks van Groeningen’s fourth collaboration with producer Dirk Impens of Menuet. ‘Variety’ selected Felix van Groeningen as one of this year’s 10 Euro Directors to Watch.

KEY CAST JOHAN HELDENBERGH JOHAN HELDENBERGH (°1967) graduated from the prestigious ‘Studio Herman Teirlinck’ academy for performing arts in Antwerp (Belgium). He has acted in many much talked-about stage plays, some of which he wrote himself. On the big screen, Heldenbergh has been seen in productions such as Antonia’s Line (Oscar® winner 1995) by Marleen Gorris, Any Way the Wind Blows by Tom Barman, Steve + Sky and The Misfortunates (De helaasheid der dingen) by Felix van Groeningen. In 2009, Johan co-wrote, directed and starred in the play The Broken Circle Breakdown featuring the Cover-Ups of Alabama. Audiences and the press alike were unanimous in their praise. Some 130 shows were presented in Flanders and The Netherlands, all sold out. For the show, Johan brought his banjo playing up to a professional level.

VEERLE BAETENS VEERLE BAETENS (°1978) studied in the Drama Departement of the Brussels Royal Conservatory and was already appearing in stage drama and musicals when she graduated in 2000. Her biggest stage success came in the title role of the musical Pippi Longstocking in 2005. Meanwhile her work on TV and in films was growing, with breakthrough roles in two films by Hans Herbots, Long Weekend and Stormforce. On television she starred in Sara, the Flemish take on international telenovella Ugly Betty, and tough cop drama Code 37. The spin-off Code 37 The Movie gave her star billing in cinemas, a status that continues with The Broken Circle Breakdown and The Verdict. Meanwhile her international career has begun with a role in the BBC TV drama The White Queen.

CHARACTERS DIDIER DIDIER is totally independent and a born fixer: practical, technical and resourceful. Didier‘s hallmark is his charm, to say the least. Always passionate, never aggressive. Didier has many passions, but the leading one is bluegrass, a pure form of American country music. He plays in a band with some friends. Didier falls hard for Elise. She becomes the love of his life. He is wary of having children because he doesn’t want to play God over someone‘s life, let alone the life of a helpless child. But in the end, love wins him over and he becomes a loving father.

“Johan co-wrote the play and starred in it, and while adapting it, it became clear to me that he should play this role. The reason is simple: Johan and his character Didier are very much alike. They like to talk and don’t mind being in the center of things. They have opinions on almost everything. There is a difference between theatre and film however, and during rehearsals Johan and I researched other sides of Didier’s character that he didn’t need to explore on stage. This was a very interesting process, and we both learned a lot from it.”

As the film is more explicit than the theatre play in some ways, I had to alter some characteristics of Elise, but in a lot of ways they stayed a mystery to me too, up until I met Veerle Baetens during an audition. At that moment, everything came together. She had to play Elise. Veerle would give Elise the balls she needed. Veerle is a real pitbull, she bites and won’t let go until it’s over. Johan Heldenbergh came to bluegrass music in middle age, when he decided to learn a musical instrument. “I bought a mandolin and started looking for ways to play it, and that’s how I discovered bluegrass. I immediately fell in love with it, because of the stories it tells, because of the singing, the high lonesome voice and the bass together. It’s the voices and the virtuosity, the jazz feel it has sometimes when people start improvising. So, I fell in love with bluegrass and I bought myself a banjo. When I came to write the Broken Circle stage play I wanted to say something about the relationship between religion and politics, but as a counterpoint I felt I had to draw on the narrative possibilities of bluegrass and white gospel music. And inspired by the music, which is full of great stories, but always with a lot of pain, we decided to write the most painful story that we could imagine.” The classic bluegrass songs that Johan selected for the play, such as “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”, form the basis for the music in The Broken Circle Breakdown, together with other numbers proposed by Felix van Groeningen. But the final soundtrack is down to composer Bjorn Eriksson, a renowned player of the Dobro, a kind of resonator guitar. Drawing on his long experience of bluegrass music, he made new arrangements of existing songs and composed original material for the film.

The Broken Circle Breakdown album has been #1 in the soundtrack charts in France and Belgium, becoming the best-selling soundtrack of all time in Belgium. The Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band has played 40 concerts to date, touring Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France. DIRK IMPENS

CARL JOOS

Dirk Impens started his career in the early 80s touring Europe with a variety of stage productions. After working in film production for several years, he launched his own outfit Favourite Films in 1989, later to become Menuet, and quickly became one of the most active independent producers in Flanders. He produced films by Robbe De Hert, Frank Van Passel, Jan Verheyen, Vincent Bal among others, and scored instant success with the production of Stijn Coninx’ Daens, which was nominated for the Oscar® for Best Foreign Language Film in 1993. Since then, Dirk Impens has produced over 30 projects, including short films, feature films and various television series.

Screenwriter Carl Joos is at ease in a range of genres, from crime thrillers to comedy and drama, and skilled enough to work in the long narrative of a television series and the narrow focus of a feature film. He achieved his breakthrough with The Memory of a Killer in 2003, and subsequently scripted a sequel, Dossier K. In parallel with The Broken Circle Breakdown he worked on The Spiral, an innovative multi-media TV drama, before turning to the First World War, co-writing the mini-series In Flanders Fields. He recently adapted Mo Hayder’s The Treatment for the big screen.

Ruben Impens got his first feature credit as a director of photography on Felix van Groeningen’s debut Steve + Sky, and the two have collaborated ever since. In 2009 Impens collected the Kodak award for best cinematography at the Hamptons International Film Festival for his work on The Misfortunates, and in 2013 was recognised in the Flemish film awards for his cinematography on The Broken Circle Breakdown. Increasingly in demand by other directors, his feature credits include Moscow Belgium, Oxygen, Beyond the Steppes and Brasserie Romantique.

Nico Leunen is equally at home in experimental and popular cinema, the obscure titles early in his editing credits rubbing shoulders with Oscar®-nominated comedy Everybody’s Famous. Since then he has built a career combining the two tendencies, developing enduring relationships with directors such as Fien Troch, Nicolas Provost, and Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth.
