Letterpress Artworks designed and printed for letterpress with the design studio Bobalong Press During my exchange, I had the opportunity to work with the design studio Bobalong, that is specialized in graphic design and letterpress printing. I created some wedding invitation layouts and a whole typeface to be printed as monograms. The invitations’ aim is something simple, but remarkable. Using only typography and the detail of the arrows (reference to love, cupid), it brings the idea of a casual but elegant wedding. The monograms were inspired in sophistication and dynamism. The letters had to have personality, since they will work alone. They come in a box with envelopes, for you to write letters, notes. It is also perfect for a gift.

Typeface: Les Jardins de la Reine

Font created on the second year of university, with the professor Naotake Fukushima
S T U V W X Y Z
Creating a font is a big challenge. Typography is sometimes just a detail, but always essential to the layout. There are several different typefaces, each one with a purpose. In this project, the main goal was to begin to familiarize with the softwares and the creation of a font - and I saw this as a big opportunity for me to learn more about one of my passions. I decided to create an initial font and chose the Palace of Versailles and its gardens as my inspiration, famous for the geometric and natural forms. The name “Les Jardins de la Reine” (The Queen’s Gardens) is a tribute to the Queen Marie Antoinette, who lived in the castle for a while, and to the beautiful gardens of Versailles.

Lettering Typographic experiments Lettering is something I’m really passionate about. It is an interesting way to use different letter shapes and, besides communicating a message through words, transmit an emotion. I look for different inspirations, playing with phrases, lyrics and also with the places I’ve been visiting lately. 1. Illustrator, Photoshop 2. Watercolour 3. Nankin Pen, Photoshop

The Book of Imaginary Beings Project from the second year of university, with the professor Rita Solieri Jorge Luis Borges book, called “O Livro dos Seres Imaginários” has 120 imaginary beings. From it, 30 beings were selected to edit the texts and illustrate. The principal idea was to create a book that the family could read together, parents and children. In this way, we needed to create a book that would be attractive for adults and for children. Due to this, besides the adult book with the texts and illustrations, illustrations for children would come in postcards, which the infants could play with while the parents read the story. I was responsible for these postcards. They are composed by the illustrations and a small description of the beings, even to act as an incentive for them to start reading.

Illustrations 1. The Bird’s Duet This illustration is one of my first studies for my final dissertation project: “Synaesthesia, Music and Illustration: A Children’s Picture Book About Classical Music”. As it is an experimentation phase, I’m trying different techniques and illustration styles. On this one, I decided to experiment with watercolour and nankin pen. Also, testing possibilities of characters, this illustration shows two birds playing in a duet. The idea is to work with simple but engaging drawings to involve the children.

Illustrations 2. Butterflies This illustration is inspired on a poem by the brazilian poet Manoel de Barros: The greatest wealth of the man is his incompleteness. At this point I am wealthy. Words that accept me as I am - I do not accept. I can not stand to be just a guy who opens doors, that pulls valves, that looks at the watch, that buys bread at 6 pm, that goes outside, that points pencils, that sees the grape etc. etc. Forgive But I need to be the others. I think of renewing the man using butterflies. (personal translation)
The illustration shows this idea of a person being just a machine, in opposite to the freedom and simplicity of the butterflies. The last verse of the poem is written on the band (in portuguese): “I think of renewing the man using butterflies.

Illustrations 3. Oh Deer Love This illustration was created for my personal blog. The idea of the name is to play with the words “Dear” and “Deer”. To compose the logo, I decided to create an illustration with watercolour of a cute deer. The lettering for the name was also created by me. With one of the leaves from the illustration, I also created a pattern for the background of the webpage, that you can check .

“Street: a diverse soul” Pattern A project for the Renner Competition “Brazil Pattern Prize” The Brazil Pattern Prize was a competition organizated by the clothes store Renner where you could create patterns for 5 different categories, all involving the theme “Brazilian soul”. When doing the visual research, the “favelas” called my attention. That is why I decided to choose the Brazilian Street Soul category. The irregular markers and the bright colours bring the idea of diversity we can find on Brazilian streets. With this module, I’ve created a pattern that would be used on the bottom of dresses, shirts, bags etc. Fortunately, this pattern got into the twelve finalists of the competition, being published in the pattern design book “Brazilian Soul”, that you can access online or download .
