Florida’s Volunteer Time Valued at More Than $18/hr Independent Sector (IS) has released one of its most popular data points, the value of volunteer time. The 2012 value of volunteer time in Florida is $18.25/hour, while national averages appear closer to $22/hr. State-by-state figures for the value of volunteer time are also available on the IS website, independentsector. org The value of volunteer time provides one way to measure the impact millions of individuals make with each hour they dedicate to make a difference. The release of this important figure came before National Volunteer Week, which takes place April 21-27, 2013. According to Urban Institute, nonprofits employ approximately 13.7 million workers – about 10 percent of the American work force – and account for about 5.5 percent of GDP. According to the Corporation for National Community Service, about 64.3 million Americans, or 26.8 percent of the adult population gave 7.9 billion hours of volunteer service worth $171 billion in 2011; estimates for 2012 will be released this summer.

The Florida Campus Compact Awards Gala will be held Thursday evening, November 7, 2013 at Palm Beach State College’s Boca Raton Campus. The Awards Gala is the premier recognition venue that formally acclaims exceptional service-learning and engaged scholarship currently underway all across Florida. In addition to raising awareness, and giving credit to those who set the highest standards, this event is also the only fundraising function that exclusively supports the continuing mission of Florida Campus Compact. These awards recognize the outstanding work of faculty, administrators, service coordinators, AmeriCorps VISTAs, community partners and others who make substantial contributions to support engaged scholarship. TELLING YOUR GYSD STORY Planning a project for Global Youth Service Day? GYSD.org makes promoting your event easy with some great social-sharing functions! By utilizing the promotional tools available on the website, you’ll be able to increase visibility and support for your project. After you’ve registered your project, you can spread the word, recruit participants, and connect with social media directly from your project page. The website provides tips for connecting with bloggers and sharing messages from Facebook and Twitter. They also provide news release templates that make sharing your story with the media a snap. Downloadable GYSD logos and posters are also available to show your project is part of a larger movement.

Campus Compact Learning Resources for the Carnegie Classification on Community Engagement The Campus Compact network is providing a variety of learning resources to its members for the Carnegie Classification application process. These resources are listed below.

The Engaged Campus: Preparing for the 2015 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification In this pre-recorded discussion, panelists share information about the 2015 application cycle for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Elective Community Engagement Classification. Presenters discuss ways the Classification advances institutional engagement and offer “on the ground” perspective from two- and four-year institutions. Presenters include Dr. John Saltmarsh, Co-Director, New England Resource Center for Higher Education and Ms. Gail Robinson, Director of Service-Learning, American Association of Community Colleges. Peer Development Network The Peer Development Network is a 10-session series designed to support campuses in determining whether the Carnegie Classification is attainable, structuring their self-study processes, and addressing challenges in the application process. Beginning with three webinars, national experts will explain the application framework, feasible assessment methods, and model application processes. •Webinar I: Classification & Framework – April 2013 •Webinar II: Carnegie-worthy Assessment – May 2013 •Webinar III: Panel of Model Processes – June 2013 Following the webinar series, participants continue their participation through a Peer Support Institute. The Peer Support Institute will organize participants in small groups where they identify two areas of the application framework they anticipate to be the most challenging for their campus. Trained facilitators will work with each group to identify resources and strategies to address those challenges. This Peer Development Network is offered by the Eastern Region Campus Compact. Carnegie Classification Virtual Learning Community For those actively pursuing the Carnegie Classification, this moderated virtual learning community will be available to all Campus Compact members seeking (re)classification for the Carnegie Foundation’s Elective Classification on Community Engagement. During the application process, members will receive support from experts in the field who will be moderating the community as well as from one another. This online platform will allow Campus Compact members the opportunity to participate in a moderated peer learning community with similar institutions and experts in the field. Members can share information, ask questions and learn from each other. The Virtual Learning Community will be a place where members can receive feedback on specific topics and share resources with other members. Campus Compact and its experts will be active in the virtual learning community and will respond to and address key challenges as they arise. The learning community will operate from September 2013 – April 2014. 2013 Ford College Community Challenge Ford Motor Company Fund is accepting submissions for the 2013 Ford College Community Challenge. The Ford College Community Challenge is designed to work with colleges to catalyze student-led, community-building projects that address pressing local needs. This year's theme is "Building Sustainable Communities." Ten winning proposals will be chosen and these schools or student organizations will receive a $25,000 grant to implement their ideas. Diving Deep: Campus Compact’s Institute for Experienced Civic and Community Engagement Practitioners From July 9-12, 2013 in Des Moines, Iowa, Campus Compact, in partnership with Iowa Campus Compact, will welcome seasoned practitioners and a team of distinguished facilitators to explore the future of the servicelearning and civic and community engagement movement through Diving Deep: Campus Compact’s Institute for Experienced Civic and Community Engagement Practitioners. The participants will engage in a stimulating community of diverse voices in which participants – through both structured programming and accidental discovery – will explore unknown territories, bring to the surface their own assumptions and come to an understanding on a deeper, more personal level of what it means to be a leader and professional in this field. They will be inspired, encouraged, renewed, and motivated through this professional development opportunity to learn from other like-minded colleagues.

Food For The Poor Student Community Service and Global Initiative Opportunities Food For The Poor, named by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, is an interdenominational Christian ministry that provides food, emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. Additionally, Food for the Poor offers two student community service and global initiatives called Students For The Poor and the AllNighter for the Poor to college students nationwide. Students with a passion for serving the poor and helping create positive change can join the cause to empower one person, one family, one community at a time through these programs. STEM Faculty Scholars Institute Orlando, FL May 14 – 15, 2013 Florida Campus Compact will be hosting the STEM Faculty Scholars Institute on May 14 and 15 in Orlando, Florida. The Institute will bring together a select group of STEM Fellows to build upon the cohort/network created as a result of ten successful STEM Day Institutes and the STEM Fellows Individual Grant Program. During this two-day conference, these STEM Fellows will be assimilated into FL|CC’s Certified Scholars program where they will become a resource to other STEM Faculty in the state as well as continue their commitment to addressing STEM-related issues in Florida by using service-learning, civic engagement and other community-based learning practices. Additionally, invited STEM Fellows will collectively create and edit a significant portion of a document that will become a “How-to” guide for service-learning, specifically focused on the STEM disciplines. The goal is to have this guide available by the end of the summer. This institute, along with every STEM Day Institute, STEM focused workshop/event, and grant program up to this point, was made possible by a Learn and Serve America grant awarded to FL|CC in 2010. *This material is based upon work supported by the Corporation for National and Community Service under Learn and Serve America Grant No.10LHSFL001. Florida Well-Represented on President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll The 2013 President’s Higher Eduation Community Service Honor Roll recipients were announced at the American Council on Education’s 95th Annual Meeting Leading Change on March 4, 2013, in Washington, DC. The 2013 Honor Roll includes 18 Florida Campus Compact member institutions. Stetson University was named as one of twelve finalists nation-wide. 113 institutions were named Honor Roll Members with Distinction, including Florida Gulf Coast College and Rollins College. Among 690 institutions named to the honor roll, were 15 FL|CC members: Barry University, Brevard Community College, Eckerd College, Florida Atlantic University, Florida Tech, Florida Southern, Florida State University, Miami Dade College, Nova Southeastern University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Ringling College of Art and Design, University of North Florida, University of South Florida, St. Leo University, and The University of Miami. The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll annually celebrates the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful, measureable outcomes in the communities they serve. According to the most recent 2012 national report (CNCS) 3.1 million college students dedicated more than 118 million hours of service across the country — a contribution valued at $2.5 billion.

Call For Papers (Deadline 9/15/13) The International Journal of Education for Social Justice (RIEJS) is seeking articles for the autumn 2013 monographic issue on ServiceLearning. RIEJS is an academic peer-reviewed publication in electronic format and open access, that is edited by the research group “School change for Social Justice” (GICE) from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, in collaboration with the Latin American Research Network on School Improvement and School Effectiveness (RINACE). It was created in November 2010 as a tool for promoting quality research that sees education as a powerful instrument for social transformation. True Hero True Hero, Inc., a Cleveland-based, non-profit organization, awards grants to students and schools for doing good work in their communities and beyond. A total of $20,000 will be given away June 30, 2013 to help fund service projects. To apply, go to www.truehero.org and post a project…all you need is a short paragraph/description. Next, get votes for the service project…send out an email blast to everyone on your campus friends, family, faculty, students and parents, and encourage them to vote for the project and pass it along via email, social media, etc. On June 30th, grants will be given to eight organizations at the college/university level receiving the highest number of votes. Diving In: Campus Compact’s Institute for New Civic and Community Engagement Professionals Diving In: Campus Compact’s Institute for New Civic and Community Engagement Professionals June 5-7, 2013 St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, TX This gathering, designed for those new to civic and community engagement roles, will provide opportunities and tools to acquire knowledge, build skills, engage with colleagues and reflect on topics and issues that will enable us to develop competence, confidence, and support in our work and in our lives. The Institute curriculum is based on Campus Compact’s Looking In Reaching Out publication, which is a reflective guide for service-learning professionals.

AmeriCorps Day Institutes Held in Florida The FL|CC AmeriCorps VISTA Initiative hosted three AmeriCorps Day Institutes to provide AmeriCorps members in Central Florida, Gainesville, and Miami with opportunities to network with other projects and gain valuable professional development skills. In Gainesville, 14 College Access and Success members, VISTAs, and AmeriCorps Capacity Corps members came together at the University of Florida on April 5th, representing the United Way of North Central Florida, Florida State University, University of Florida, and Rebuilding Together of North Central Florida. Participants gained information on how to maximize skills developed over the course of their terms on their résumé, learned strategies for mentoring at-risk youth, and developed skills for making effective presentations to various audiences in the nonprofit sector. FL|CC College Access and Success Coordinator, Lyndi Smith, facilitated a session using actual résumé examples submitted for a nonprofit job opening and compared their strengths and weaknesses. FL|CC alumnus and professional speaker, Steven Carrillo, facilitated the interactive workshop on mentoring at-risk youth, and FL|CC VISTA Leader, Samuel Mooneyhan, led the workshop on presentation skills and engaged participants in an activity utilizing those skills in a real world situation. Special thanks to Josh Funderburke, Executive Director of the Center for Leadership and Service, and Ryan Holloway, AmeriCorps VISTA, for co-hosting the event, providing meeting space and free parking to participants. Special thanks to the Leslie Pendleton, Director of the University of Florida Opportunity Scholars Program and Dr. Mary Kay Carodine, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, for visiting and welcoming AmeriCorps members to the University of Florida. In Orlando, 32 AmeriCorps members participated in the April 11th Day Institute, held at the University of Central Florida’s Burnett Honors College. Participating organizations and institutions included the UCF Center for Public and Nonprofit Management, Central Florida Urban League, Families in Transition, Heart of Florida United Way, Stetson University, Schools and Communities: Together for Tomorrow, Polk State College, OCPS McKinney-Vento Program, Rollins College, and Adventist University of Health Sciences. Hue Jacobs, State Program Specialist for the CNCS Florida State Office, led two Life after AmeriCorps workshops, discussing tools and tips for using the Education Award, reflecting on the year of service, and maximizing AmeriCorps skills on the résumé. Steven Carrillo returned to facilitate his award winning workshop titled “Breaking the Barrier,” providing participants with strategies for working with at-risk youth. FL|CC VISTA Leader Samuel Mooneyhan not only coordinated the Day Institute, but presented his workshop on giving effective presentations in the nonprofit world. Drew Bedurah, Manager of Mentoring Relations for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida, discussed how to stay motivated when serving becomes difficult. Jakita Allen, VISTA Leader for Orlando Cares, provided an empowering presentation on working through challenges with a smile. Lastly, Ella Swain, FL|CC College Access and Success VISTA, engaged participants in a fun exercise to help members get to know each other. Special thanks to Kelly Astro, Director of Undergraduate Research and Civic Engagement at the UCF Burnett Honor’s College, and Caitlin Poor, AmeriCorps VISTA Hero Coordinator for co-hosting the event.

FL|CC AmeriCorps Alternative Spring Breaks Many AmeriCorps VISTA members spent their spring break enagaged in service and making a difference in the lives of others. The VISTAs collaborated with non profit organizations and agencies to coordinate Alternative Spring Break trips for college and university students across Florida. Here are just a few highlights from some of the many projects FL|CC AmeriCorps VISTAs participated in:
