Record Number of Rollins College Students Selected to Participate in Clinton Global Initiative University Ten students from Rollins College were recently selected to participate in the 2014 Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU), which took place from March 21-23 at Arizona State University. The students competed against thousands of applicants worldwide, and joined nearly 1,200 attendees who were chosen for this year’s event. Since 2011, Rollins has had 11 students go to CGIU. The Clinton Global Initiative University meets annually to bring together young leaders to meet and develop solutions for universal challenges, which

are outlined in CGIU’s five key areas: education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation and public health. The model for the event was inspired by the Clinton Global Initiative, which is geared toward world leaders. President Bill Clinton established the first CGIU in 2007. “The heart to implement change in the global community is the driving force behind CGIU participants,” said Chrissy Garton, director of social innovation at Rollins College. “Whether it’s an educational initiative in the Caribbean

or a focus on public health right here in our backyard, we are honored that Rollins students will have the opportunity to share their social ventures with changemakers from around the world.” For consideration into CGIU, students submitted a personal “commitment to action” or idea that is new, specific and measurable. Submissions are evaluated on the merit of the idea and accepted applicants will have the opportunity to bring their ideas to life and qualify to receive more than $750,000 in funding.

1

the following institutions: Broward College, Flagler College, Hillsborough Community College, Indian River State College, Miami Dade College, Pensacola State College, Polk State College, Tallahassee Community College and the Florida Department of Education. Faculty, staff, and students from participating C2C campuses in Florida shared best practices and ideas for increasing opportunities for student access and success. Shana Berger,

2

Project Manager for C2C with Campus Compact, and Dick Kinsley, Executive Director at Ohio Campus Compact, also shared insights from participating colleges in Ohio and Washington.

C2C is a program of Campus Compact with funding from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Through peer-to-peer, advocacy and peer assisted community-engaged learning, C2C supports

3

students to achieve academic success through active engagement with their peers, college, and community. Projects at community colleges in Florida, Ohio, and Washington engage more than 4,500 students enrolled in developmental education courses. With the initial three-year C2C program pilot phase ending in June 2014, preliminary evaluation conducted by Brandeis University and Campus Compact indicate that Florida C2C students

4

were retained at a higher rate than their comparison peer groups (85% to 79%). Participating students also had higher credit hour completion rates than their comparison peer groups. Please visit the FL|CC website for more information about the C2C program.
