Kudos for Collaboration to the South
Florida Campus Compact Collaboration. So far, twelve representatives from Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University, Broward College, Lynn University, Miami Dade College, and Barry University have organized to share resources for advancing STEM service-learning in the region. By engaging in reflection from the South Florida Day Institutes, they hope to involve other FL|CC member institutions to apply for future grants and advance STEM in academic service-learning on their own campuses. STEM Service-Learning Fellows: Individual and Campus Grant Program Florida Campus Compact (FL|CC) is inviting individual and small teams of faculty to submit proposals to become FL|CC STEM Service-Learning Faculty Fellows (STEM Fellows). All Fellows will participate in a series of online and in-person workshops to assist in retooling or creating a new course that promotes service-learning in the Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) disciplines or a STEM-related, community-based project that is tied to curricular outcomes. All STEM Fellows will receive between $400-$1000 in addition to free professional development and technical assistance to incorporate engaged scholarship into their work. $100,000 Grants Available for Unconventional Ideas to Address Global Health Issues
If you have an Alternative Break or service program on your campus and are looking for enriching opportunities for your students, the Hope CommUnity Center would love for you to consider their program. The Hope CommUnity Center recieves hundreds of students a year to work in Apopka, FL, (20 minutes outside Orlando) with migrant farmworkers and families. This program is very much geared toward service AND learning. The staff are outstanding educators and the projects are both timely and powerful. The cost is very reasonable and includes housing, food, and educational and service experiences.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced today that it is accepting proposals for Round 7 of Grand Challenges Explorations, a $100 million grant initiative to encourage innovation in global health research. Proposals are being accepted through May 19, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

This award recognizes one senior faculty member (post-tenure or middle-to-late career at institutions without tenure) each year for exemplary engaged scholarship, including leadership in advancing students’ civic learning, conducting community-based research, fostering reciprocal community partnerships, building institutional commitments to service-learning and civic engagement, and other means of enhancing higher education’s contributions to the public good. The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.
Newman Civic Fellows are nominated by college and university presidents to acknowledge motivation and ability in public leadership. Sophomores and juniors at four-year institutions and second year students at twoyear institutions are eligible for nomination.
