FOLSOM LAKE COLLEGE 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT
ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE
A Message from the President Message from the President Contact Rachel
Colleagues and Friends of FLC, I am honored to present the Folsom Lake College 2015-2016 annual report to the college and the community. This report follows a new tradition of highlighting the accomplishments of our faculty and staff, and the achievements of our students. It offers an abridged reflection of the college’s progress during the past year, and serves to acknowledge the tremendous growth of this young, but rapidly maturing, college. The 2015-2016 year was indeed memorable, marked by a series of noteworthy accomplishments. Chief among them was the culmination of the multi-year collective effort to reaffirm the college’s accreditation. The fall semester also kicked off a year-long ten-year visioning project, a first in the college’s history, for the 2016-2026 College Master Plan. The “firsts” continued as the new Rancho Cordova Center welcomed students in a truly stunning new facility for the spring semester, tripling the number of students served, and achieving status as an official Educational Center. Spring also brought the inaugural women’s intercollegiate softball team, a new Inmate Education Program at Mule Creek State Prison and Folsom Women’s Facility, and the expansion of student success programs targeting students underprepared for college level coursework. As we begin the 2016-2017 year, I am so proud of FLC’s continued progress and our unwavering commitment to students. Educating students, preparing them for futures yet defined, opening pathways to opportunities, challenging minds, and committing to doing whatever it takes - this is FLC. This is what we call “Falcontude.” The coming year will continue the college’s extraordinary growth with the region’s first Promise Program and a new Makerspace. Just wait and see! As John F. Kennedy once said, “Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.”
Dr. Rachel Rosenthal President
2015 - 2016 Highlights at Folsom Lake College September 2015
July 2015 Folsom Lake College student Chanelle Sadler was featured in the latest California Community Colleges state-wide “I Can Afford College” financial aid literacy campaign. Chanelle overcame enormous obstacles, including homelessness, while being a single mother to two young daughters. She credits much of her growth to her experience as a student at FLC.

FLC’s Classified Senate partnered with Rolling Hills Blue Star Moms on a “Treats for the Troops” Care Package Donation Drive. Thanks to the generosity of the Folsom Lake College community, two overflowing boxes were donated to the cause. The Falcon’s Eye Theatre won three Elly awards for Anon(ymous) on behalf of the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance (SARTA). The Falcon’s Eye winners were: Chris Kramer for Lighting Design, Sharon Martinez for Sound Design, and Rebecca Redmond for Costume Design.
August 2015 The Work Experience & Internship Program partnered with Dignity Health’s Mercy Hospital of Folsom and placed 37 FLC students as volunteer staff in the hospital’s emergency department to get handson experience in this exciting field.
October 2015 September 2015 During Spotlight Night, over 350 high school students and current FLC students with undeclared majors attended and spoke with faculty and industry partners about their career options. Activities included an Explosive Ordinance Detail unit (a robot that law enforcement uses to evaluate suspicious objects), a mock crime scene, a GIS mapping demonstration, and a fire truck static display.
FLC alumnus Kassandra Ropp was named one of two winners in the “My Israel, My Passion” video competition sponsored by the Embassy of Israel and selected by Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer. Kassandra won an all-expenses-paid diplomatic relations trip to Israel. During her visit, Kassandra had lunch with the President of the State of Israel, Reuven Rivlin, at his residence in Jerusalem and met with other members of the Israeli government. FLC’s Public Information Services Office won four Medallion Awards, one gold and three silver, from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) for their acclaimed college marketing materials.

The women’s soccer team won its 3rd consecutive Bay Valley Conference (BVC) championship title. In postseason play, the Falcons made it to the Elite Eight (3rd round of state playoffs) – farthest in the program’s history.
December 2015 Sacramento News & Review named the Falcon’s Eye Theatre one of the best overall production teams of 2015. The Falcon’s Eye “...incorporates innovative, clever and creative production elements in its productions including video, lighting, sound, and staging.”
Over 100 colleagues and community supporters gathered for the College Master Planning retreat. These conversations helped guide the formation of the college’s first long-range visioning project, the College Master Plan (CMP), that was completed in spring 2016. The college dedicated its new memorial carillon with a special ceremony. The electronic instrument was graciously donated to Folsom Lake College by Cecelia and Ron Byrd, whose granddaughter Michaela Byrd is a current FLC Falcon. The northeast corner of Aspen Hall on the Folsom campus now serves as the college’s “bell tower.”
November 2015 Folsom Lake College commemorated Veterans Day with a series of activities including the hosting of the 1st Annual inVEST (Veterans Education Support Team) Veterans Appreciation Luncheon. A highlight of the luncheon was a panel discussion of six Armed Forces veterans and current FLC students discussing their transition from “boots to books.”
January 2016 President Rachel Rosenthal announced the recipients of the 2015 “Of the Year” Awards, as nominated by and voted on by the college community. The winners were: Faculty of the Year: Juan Flores, Student Success Coordinator Classified Staff of the Year: Angie Williams, Instructional Assistant, Welcome & Student Success Center Manager of the Year: Bernard Gibson, Dean of Student Services

Folsom Lake College’s cyber league team (known as the “FLC++”) took the top spot in the Bronze Division in the National Cyber League (NCL) Competition. Teams competed in a variety of activities designed to simulate actual cyber attacks and defenses. The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the regional accrediting agency that evaluates two-year colleges in California, reaffirmed Folsom Lake College’s accreditation. Accreditation Liaison Officer Monica Pactol and Self Evaluation Chair John Alexander are pictured in front of the Accreditation “Hall of Fame.”
FLC’s first intercollegiate women’s softball team launched their inaugural season, bringing the number of teams to seven.
February 2016
Folsom Lake College’s Medical Laboratory Technician program, along with Program Coordinator Jason Pedro, were featured in a series of ABC10’s “Better Jobs” segments focused on good jobs that do not require a bachelor’s degree. Health care jobs were one of the three fastestgrowing fields in the Sacramento region.
FLC’s inmate education program, under the guidance of Dean Kim Harrell, offered face-to-face classes at the Folsom Women’s Facility and Mule Creek State Prison, serving a total of 89 inmates. FLC is one of only four California community colleges part of the pilot program.
March 2016 The Folsom Lake College Library was featured on the cover of Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, the premier source for reviews of academic books and digital resources of interest to scholars and students in higher education. The Rancho Cordova Center was honored as the 2015 “Transit Oriented Development of the Year” by Sacramento Regional Transit at the 8th Annual TransitAction Awards. RCC Dean Brian Robinson and Los Rios Associate Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management Pablo Manzo were on hand to accept the prestigious award. Visual Arts faculty selected Alisia Gomez as the winner of the Kingsley Merit Award for Folsom Lake College. Alisia was selected from a group of finalists based on her portfolio submission, oral presentation, and written statement, and received the $600 prize. FLC student John Rodriguez was named to the Phi Theta Kappa 2016 All-California Academic 2nd Team. John was honored at a luncheon hosted by the Community College League of California at the Sacramento Convention Center.
FLC’s Work Experience & Internship Program, under the guidance of faculty member Julie Collier, was named the College Program of the Year for two-year colleges by the California Internship & Work Experience Association (CIWEA).
2015 - 2016 Highlights continued... April 2016
May 2016 The FLC men’s golf team won the Big 8 Conference championship for the 3rd time in five years. Freshman Mason Troike was named the Big 8 MVP and the All-Region MVP.
The El Dorado Center Patrons Club held their 48th Annual “Dollars for Scholars” luncheon at Cold Springs Community Church in Placerville. Ten students were awarded $500 scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year during the event.
Music faculty Dr. David Newnham and Mariia Pechenova and the FLC Choral Ensembles participated in SacSings!, the annual Sacramento Choral Festival held at the Sacramento City College Performing Arts Center.
FLC tennis had a strong showing with eleven players qualifying for the State Championship in Ojai. Freshman Sean Alves was the lone NorCal player to make it to the quarterfinals and became the all-time highest placing FLC tennis player in the state tournament.
The Falcon’s Eye Theatre production of The Who’s “Tommy” received rave reviews from the Sacramento Press, The Placer Performance Calendar, and a 5 Star Review from Sacramento News & Review.
The Math and Engineering Club “launched” a special fundraiser, Soak a Professor, where for a small price, students had the opportunity of firing a Club-built trebuchet (catapult) in an attempt to hit a target at the end of the grassy knoll. If they hit the target, the student won the chance to throw a bucket of water onto the brave faculty and manager volunteers.
FLC’s beloved tradition, the annual Students vs. Faculty/ Staff softball game and potluck BBQ, was held at the Athletics Complex. The “Old Birds” (aka Faculty/Staff) beat the Falcon flock (Students), 32-9.
June 2016 FLC students Shelbie Condie [pictured], Kiley Michalec, and Will Shultz were recipients of the 2016 University of California Regents Scholarship. The merit-based Regents Scholarship is the UC’s most prestigious scholarship, which grants an honorarium award of $7,500 per year plus privileges including priority registration, research opportunities, and student-faculty mentorships. Scholars are selected based on their academic achievements and personal accomplishments and must have a GPA of 3.80 or higher.
Rancho Cordova Center Receives Official Status
On March 21, the California Community Colleges Board of Governors approved Rancho Cordova as an official state educational center.
What did it take to achieve this goal?
Tripled the number of courses offered over a two year period
Tripled the number of students served during a period of flat enrollment (a 200% increase!)
Achieved the required 1,000 Full Time Equivalent Students (FTES) needed for official Center Status
Expanded and realigned both instructional and student services programs and services
Construction of, and phased move into, a new facility
Hired new staff members, including a dedicated Rancho Cordova Center dean
The Rancho Cordova Center is the sixth and final center included in the Los Rios’ 2001 “Plan for Educating a Region.” Approval as an official state educational center enables the district to be eligible for additional on-going funding beginning in 2016-2017 as well as future State Capital Outlay funds.

Folsom Lake College Foundation
The Folsom Lake College Foundation secured financial resources for some exciting new initiatives in 2015-2016: Folsom Lake College/Rancho Cordova Promise: In May 2016, the Rancho Cordova City Council voted unanimously in support of $100,000 funding for a Folsom Lake College/Rancho Cordova Promise program from the Measure H Community Enhancement Fund. Designed to improve access to higher education and degree completion for Rancho Cordova residents, the “Promise program encourages local high school seniors to further their education and reach their academic goals. This program, the first of its kind in the region, will provide the first year fee-free (up to 12 units/semester) for any 2016-17 high school graduate who is a Rancho Cordova resident and enrolls in Folsom Lake College full-time for the fall semester of 2017. Eligible students will receive funding that can be applied toward tuition and fees, textbooks, or class materials. Innovation Center Makerspace: A makerspace is a physical location where people gather to share resources and knowledge, work on projects, network, and build. This idea of a collaborative studio space for creative endeavors has caught hold in education—the informal combination of lab, shop, and conference room forms a creative environment for learning through hands-on exploration. The vision of the college, with the help of a $50,000 commitment from Intel, is to transform the Folsom Lake College Innovation Center into a comprehensive makerspace that will enable students from all disciplines to tackle open-ended, real world challenges, preparing them for careers involving innovation, creativity, and invention, and helping them to become more competitive in a rapidly changing job market.
