A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN A Night With Janis Joplin is a musical journey celebrating Janis Joplin and her biggest musical influences — trailblazers like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, all of whom inspired Joplin to become one of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s greatest legends. Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Her unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made Joplin a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Audiences will enjoy Joplin’s favorites, including “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and many others.

KAHULANUI HAWAII’S KINGS OF SWING

His continued success can be attributed to his deep sense of country music history and his humble gratitude in being an important part of it. His acclaimed Killin’ Time boasted an unprecedented five Number One hits — and he has gone on to sell over 20 million albums, with a third of his songs achieving hit song status on country radio. The Harris Center proudly welcomes back to Stage One “a future Country Music Hall of Famer” (Los Angeles Times).

Hawaiian music is undoubtedly one of the Islands’ great exports, but what about the music that was imported onto the islands? Meet Kahulanui, a leading exponent of traditional Hawaiian music as blended with the Big Band Swing as brought to the Aloha State by U.S. servicemen during World War II. The nine piece band—four horns, plus guitar, bass, ukulele, drums and steel guitar — was nominated for a Grammy for their debut CD, Hula Ku’I. Their energy and dynamic arrangements have caused a sensation throughout the Islands.

THE SIMON & GARFUNKEL STORY DAKHABRAKHA Come for a fascinating trip to the Ukraine, one like no other. Created in 2004 by the avant-garde theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi, three women and a man weave ancient Ukrainian folk melodies with world rhythms and a range of traditional instrumentation that is Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian in origin. TOMÁS AND THE LIBRARY LADY Dedicated to “creating theatre so strikingly original that it instills in young people an enduring awe, love and respect for the medium,” the award-winning Childsplay brings the story of Tomás, the young son of migrant farm workers. A chance encounter introduces him to the Library Lady, who recognizes his thirst for knowledge and encourages him to read. His delight in books is equaled by his pride in teaching Spanish to the Library Lady. A bilingual musical based on the true story of Tomás Rivera, the first minority Chancellor in the University of California system.

Remember when you used to listen to an entire album? Classic Albums Live does. Classic Albums Live (C.A.L.) brings you the greats albums from the 60s and 70s and recreates them live on stage, note for note, cut for cut. For their October 6 performance C.A.L. will recreate Led Zeppelin II. PARIS COMBO Two decades spent criss-crossing the globe — playing to enthusiastic audiences from Sydney to San Francisco and Berlin to Beijing — have enabled France’s Paris Combo to create a unique, cosmopolitan sound, a fun-loving mix of swinging gypsy jazz, cabaret, French pop and Latino and Middle Eastern rhythms. Fronted by the charismatic vocals of Belle du Berry whose “onstage demeanor is so expressive that communication is never an issue… Part gamine charm, part playful seduction, her delivery fuses theatrical instincts with jazz-inflected phrasing that accentuates the band’s irresistible rhythmic and melodic hooks” (The Age, Melbourne 2017).

DANNY CARMO’S

MATHEMATICAL ORDINARIUS MYSTERIES From Northern Ireland comes a spectacular show where math, theatre and digital technology collide in an interactive performance. Danny Carmo thought school and, in particular, math wasn’t for him. He was more interested in dreaming about becoming a magician. But as he learned the tricks of the trade, he realized that math was not only essential… it was THE SECRET to the magic that he loved. “The pupils were mesmerized!” raved a third grade teacher. “Not only do they want to know how to do the magic tricks, they want to know how the math works.” Best for grades 2-6.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA RICHARD TOGNETTI, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Bach, The Art of Fugue: Contrapunctus I-IV Mozart Violin Concerto tbc, With violinist Richard Tognetti Beethoven String Quartet Op. 130 (arranged for string orchestra) Beethoven Grosse Fugue, Op. 133 (arranged for string orchestra)

The reviews say it all: “If there’s a better chamber orchestra in the world today, I haven’t heard it” (The Guardian); “The energy and vibe of a rock band with the ability of a crack classical chamber group” (Washington Post); “They don’t play New York nearly often enough. But, on the rare occasion that they do come in from Down Under, they leave an indelible mark on the city’s music scene” (TimeOut New York); “Early music doesn’t get much hipper than this” (Los Angeles Times). Performing as a flexible and versatile ‘ensemble of soloists’ on modern and period instruments, their repertoire spans six centuries and their performances are marked with a vitality and virtuosity unmatched by other ensembles: in a nod to past traditions, only the cellists are seated, and the resulting sense of energy and individuality is one of the most commentedupon elements of an ACO concert experience.
