Rome Italy

Rome has more listed buildings, museums and palaces than most cities, and regardless of where you head to in the city, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice in discovering both famous and lesser known Roman gems. Starting with the ancient Romans, visits to the Coliseum, the Forum Romanum as well as the Pantheon should be on the top of any visitor’s list. Similarly, a visit to Rome should not be without a trip to the micro-state of Vatican City. Gaze at the truly breathtaking Basilica of St Peter and the Sistine Chapel, with its world-famous painted ceilings. See if you can spot the Pope from the Square of St Peter and then leave the flocks of tourists behind and head beneath the surface to The Vatican’s Necropolis, where you can explore the 22 excavated rooms and even the apparent grave of St Peter himself. Of course, Rome is much more than ruins and beautiful buildings. The capital is also about great food and wine, lots of shopping and tranquil parks to catch your breath in when looking to relax away from the city buzz. Around the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, you’ll find plenty of luxurious shops and delightful cafés where you can grab a cup of Italian coffee, between shopping endeavours. For a green escape, immediately north of this area sits the Villa Borghese. A quaint park with lots of trees, ruins and of course the actual Villa Borghese, where you can gaze at a wide array of classical paintings and masterpieces. As the night draws near and the streetlamps light the city in a golden glow, find a restaurant along the narrow streets and tuck into a great local pasta carbonara that will put a flavourful spin on your Roman holiday.

Florence Italy

The art of Florence is as much found in its streets as it is in its galleries, and a casual stroll through the narrow streets, might cause a bit of a strain on the neck, as the numerous towers and stunning buildings will command your eyes to look up in admiration. Walk along the Arno River until you come to the Ponte Vecchio. Strolling across this bridge, with the old shops and buildings aligning it, will give you the impression that you’ve travelled back in time. Visit the Loggia dei Lanzi, Palazzo Vecchio and then head on to the marvel at the gigantic domed cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Climb Giotto’s Tower right next to the cathedral for a perfect panoramic view of the city, or opt instead to find a nearby restaurant to sample some fantastic Florentine food. Apart from the great culinary treats of Tuscany, the city is famous for its Bistecca alla fiorentina, which is a gigantic steak often cooked rare. Complement the meal with a delicious dessert in the form of local gelato or biscotti di Prato, before heading to the Piazzale Michelangelo, from where you can watch the sun set over the city. As the mountains darken against the setting sun and the lights of the city engulf the red-roofs, if you’re suddenly hit by a feeling of never wanting to leave this city, we totally understand you, we feel the same way about Florence.

Venice Italy

Built on an archipelago of small flat islands, most visitors head to the heart of the old city: the San Marco Basilica, which rises above its equally famous square, and the adjacent equally stunning Doge’s Palace. For a panoramic view of the city, cross the water by boat to the small island of San Giorgio Maggiore, where you can climb the bell tower. You can also see another side of the city by visiting Murano Island, which for centuries has been the centre of production of the famous Venetian glassware. On the way back, stop by the small artificial island of San Michele in Isola, which has served as Venice’s cemetery for 200 years and is the resting place of many artists and musicians. No trip to Venice is complete without a trip along the canals on one of the iconic gondolas, with a glass of wine or champagne in hand, and when you step off the narrow boat, after having passed Ca’ d’Oro and swept under the Rialto Bridge, you will find no shortage in places to choose from for a romantic dinner. Naturally, the Veneto cuisine evolves around seafood, and dishes like baccala mantecato and risotto al nero di seppia (black risotto) should be on any foodie’s checklist. The local springtime delicacy of moleche (small green crabs) are also delicious treats that should be enjoyed with a cold glass of wine.
