Gibraltar Connected to Spain via a narrow strip of land, Gibraltar is built around a monolithic limestone rock that rises sharply out of the sea. A Neanderthal skull was found in a cave here in 1848, and is believed to be over 100,000 years old, making Gibraltar one of the earliest settlements in European history. Explore Saint Michael’s Cave, where numerous legends form the backdrop for this mythical place which is today used as a venue for classical music concerts. Next, take the cable car to the viewing platform at the top of the rock, from where you can gaze down at the city – and on a clear day even see Morocco. You’ll find most of the city’s shopping and bar options located around Main Street. Sample some of the local food, which is a tasty blend of Spanish, Moroccan and British cuisines, or stumble across a local pub, which might seem slightly out of place in the hot Mediterranean Sun, yet somehow fits perfectly with the scenery.
