Madeira Botanical Garden Located just three kilometres from the centre of Funchal, the Madeira Botanical Gardens measures a staggering 35,000 square metres and boasts more than 2,000 exotic plants. The gardens are separated into five main areas; indigenous and endemic plants, the tree garden, succulents, tropical and cultivated, and Loiro Park where you can admire some of the world’s most rare and exotic birds.
Funchal Cathedral Located in the heart of Funchal’s city centre, the Funchal Cathedral has been classified as a National Monument since 1910 and is the main religious building of Madeira. The Gothic architecture is truly beautiful, with the entrance lined with gilded woodwork pieces of the 17th century. The church’s processional cross is worth a visit alone, donated by D. Manuel I and considered one of the masterpieces of the Portuguese Manueline goldsmithery.
Avenida do Mar Also known as Mar Avenue, Avenida do Mar is a road that leads toward the Old Town along the seafront promenade. Here is where you can expect to find a number of local bars and restaurants strategically positioned for glorious views of the striking Funchal harbour.
