managernotes Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury for my first league game in charge of Fleetwood Town. It’s been a hectic first two weeks but I can’t speak highly enough of this group of players, they welcomed me with open arms. Last weekend’s result against Northampton was a positive one for all of us, especially when you consider I’d only had three training sessions with the players. I think from that display you could see they had taken in key points in my way of playing on board. In the short period I’ve been here the players are believing in what we are coaching them and that’s a big complement from my side. One question I’ve been asked a lot already is whether or not I plan to add to my squad of players, and the answer is yes, but there is no rush. At the moment I am still in the process of assessing the squad, I think we already can see one or two areas but I am not making any panic buys what so ever. I think that is the worst thing you can do. I have somebody with Gretar Steinsson who is overlooking the recruitment department and we also have Steve Davis, a very experienced chief scout, so obviously that is in good hands. I am concentrating on assessing my players and see how they can perform in the real games and that we will see soon. Finally, I’d like to welcome Graham Alexander back to Highbury for this afternoon’s game, along with all the players staff, director and fans of Scunthorpe United. Graham played a huge part in this club’s rise and I’m sure he will be given a warm welcome back from our supporters. Enjoy the game.

Davidball BALL SET FOR FIFTH SEASON By David Mitchell As David Ball begins his fifth season at Fleetwood Town, he is full of praise for Uwe Rosler, his fourth manager at Highbury. There are ‘positive signs for the future.’ Had things worked out differently, Ball might have already played for his new manager, at Brentford. ‘Yes, I remember the time quite well,” said Ball. “I spoke to him and was on my way down to sign on loan from Peterborough when Darren Ferguson rang to say that he wanted me to start for Peterborough on the Saturday. “This put me in a bit of a dilemma. I had just had my first child as well. “Ferguson was giving me an opportunity to stay in the Championship so I took it and scored against Portsmouth. It was nothing personal against Brentford, just circumstances.” With over 150 appearances for Fleetwood, Ball has now made around two thirds of his career appearances for Town. “I’m really happy and enjoying my football,” he said. “The club has become a big part of my life. I’ve played everywhere in front of defence and it has allowed me to both score and create goals.” The League Two play-off final win over Burton Albion in 2014 will remain a career highlight for Ball.

“My object when signing for Fleetwood was to get out of League Two and doing it through the play-off at Wembley was special,” he said. “It was my second promotion and getting the Man of the Match award topped it off!” There have been some spectacular goals along the way, none more so than the exquisite late strike which levelled the score against Preston North

End at the end of March last year. It was so good that it earned the 26 year-old a FIFA Puskás Award nomination, only the second Englishman after Wayne Rooney; “I remember coming on from the bench and wanting to make a difference,” Ball recalls. “I knew it was special as it left my boot. It was one of those moments you cherish as a player and a lovely memory to have for the rest of my life. “It was nice to be nominated alongside the likes of Messi and Tevez and there was plenty of press and coverage for Fleetwood Town as well.” Ball was released last year, at the end of his threeyear contract, but was more than happy when the opportunity came to return. “There were possibilities away from the club but I had to think of my family and I didn’t want to be too far away from home,” he said. Ball is full of praise for the new training facility at Poolfoot Farm. “It really is Premiership quality,” he said. “Previously, we trained on a rugby pitch. Here you can pass the ball on a brilliant surface and it helps your touch and confidence. It is also great for developing the youth and academy players as well as giving opportunities to people of all ages.” This is something that the Manchester-born player cares passionately about. He has recently accepted an ambassadorial role within the club, his brief connected with sporting participation. “It’s massively important that players get involved with the fan base,” he said. “We need to keep attracting more to the stadium. I know how much I have got from sport and getting others participating means a lot to me.” David Ball is sponsored by Fleetwood Town Community Trust.

Thevisitors INTRODUCING SCUNTHORPE UNITED Graham Alexander’s Scunthorpe United will travel to the Fylde Coast tonight for their first away game of the League One season against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. Coventry-born, Alexander, is the man in charge of Scunthorpe after he departed the Cod Army back in September of last year. The 2016-17 season will be Alexander’s first full season in charge of the Iron after taking over last season in March. The Scunthorpe boss began his career with a four-year stint at the Irons and accumulated over 200 appearances in that time. In 1995, he left Scunthorpe for Luton Town for £100,000 and he made over 200 appearances for that club as well. After spending four years with Luton Town, he made the move to Preston North End and instantly forged himself into the starting 11 as a right back and an established set-piece specialist. During his time at Preston North End, he was voted into the PFA’s Championship Team of the Season in 2004-05 and even made 400 appearances for the club over eight years, his last game coming against Colchester in August 2007. Just four days after his final game for Preston, he made a surprise move to their local rivals, Burnley. In the 2008-09 season with the Clarets, Alexander played in all 61 league and cup games that season as he helped Burnley achieve their first promotion to the Premier League in 33 years. Alexander claimed a few accolades whilst at Burnley for example, he became the oldest player to make a Premier League debut, was voted that Burnley’s Player of the year in 2009 and made his 1000th senior appearance whilst at the club in 2011. The former set-piece specialist even went back to Preston to finish his career in the 2011-12 season as he managed to make

18 appearances and score two goals. His playing career then ended as he was released by the club but at the same time was appointed as the clubs Head of Youth Development. Even though he retired in 2012 and was managing Fleetwood Town that December, Alexander was voted Preston’s best ever right-back by their fans the year after. Alexander’s managing career highlights began in the 2013-14 season when he led Fleetwood to Promotion by winning the League Two play-offs and was hired by Scunthorpe in March 2016.

New signing: Duane Holmes - Midfielder Holmes recently joined Scunthorpe United after he was released by Huddersfield Town. The midfielder spent his entire youth career at Huddersfield Town and made his professional league debut in a 1-1 draw against Blackpool in September 2013. Throughout his career, he managed to gain 22 appearances for Huddersfield but spent most of his professional career on loan to both Yeovil Town and Bury.

New signing: Sam Mantom – Midfielder Mantom joined Scunthorpe by a free-transfer this summer with a three-year contract after both him and Walsall couldn’t agree to a new deal. The player from Stourbridge started his career at West Bromwich Albion but never managed to play a game. In fact, his Baggies career consisted of loan deals to Haukar, Tranmere Rovers, Oldham Athletic and Walsall. Mantom left the Premier League side in 2013 to join Walsall permanently and went on to make over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals.

New signing: Josh Morris - Midfielder Morris joined Alexander’s side after only spending a single season with Bradford City. Preston-born Morris started his career with Blackburn Rovers in 2010 but other than 20 appearances for his parent-side, he spent five season going on loan to Yeovil Town, Rotherham United, Carlisle United and Fleetwood Town before making his move to Bradford in 2015.

GrahamAlexander David Mitchell spoke to former Fleetwood Town manager Graham Alexander ahead of his return to Highbury Stadium with Scunthorpe United. “I’m looking forward to the day,” said Graham. “I must admit I didn’t expect this one to be quite so soon. It will be strange to turn left out of the tunnel instead of right!” The obvious highlight of Graham’s time as manager of Fleetwood was the League Two playoff win over Burton Albion at Wembley in 2014. “A season depended on ninety minutes football,” he recalled. “I remember massive relief when the referee blew the final whistle. My first full season as a manager and we had been promoted! At the end of my first as a pro I had played for Scunthorpe in the same game at the old Wembley in 1992.” Nathan Pond and Conor McLaughlin both played at Wembley that day. “Everything said about Pondy is justified,” said Alexander. “He is a great professional, the epitome of Fleetwood Town. His will to win every day was the clearest impression I took from him.’ Alexander’s association with McLaughlin dates back to playing days at Preston and there was no hiding the pride in his voice when he spoke about the full back’s progress with Northern Ireland. “I was proud to see him walk out in the first game of the Euros,” said Alexander. “I believe that he turned a corner at Fleetwood in our first full season and became a mainstay of the side. I told him that he would only appreciate the massiveness of his international achievement in time.”

United, where his outstanding playing career started, is a tremendous opportunity for Alexander. “Scunthorpe gave me my chance as a 16 yearold and I spent seven years there. “I was worked extremely hard and it stood me in great stead to play to the age of forty. I grew from a boy to a man. Coming back twenty-one years later, everything is still clearly etched in my mind. The boot room, the gym. I cleaned every part of them as an apprentice!” “As at Fleetwood, I am surrounded by excellent people who are ambitious and want to do things right. We won the last six games of last season. We are also planning a new stadium and training ground. It looks fantastic and is exciting for the club and town.”

DEVELOPMENT/YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SQUAD Fleetwood Town’s development team drew 1-1 with a Chorley side which featured a handful on first-team players on Tuesday evening. After going behind in the game, Ashley Nadesan equalised for Town by slotting home following Thomas Grant’s through ball. Coach Nathan Rooney said afterwards: “We started well in the first half an hour. “We dominated possession but the only problem was the sharpness and lack of edge in front of goal. “Chorley had a nice 15 minute spell at the start of the second half, and the goal we conceded came from a cross before the ball bobbled in. “But we had three youth team players in the back

Fleetwood got off to the perfect opening early on into proceedings when Lewis Shorrock netted directly from a corner, before a brace from Oltunde Bayode and Dwight McNeil turned the encounter in favour of the Clarets, so the encounter this weekend is the perfect time to pick up the win. Rooney’s side have fond memories of their last visit to Carlisle, after coming away with a 5-2 triumph in August last year, so they will be hoping to gain maximum points on their travels come Saturday morning.
