ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture with Blackpool. I’d like to extend that welcome to Neil Critchley, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the short journey up the road this afternoon. I wish you all a safe journey home from Highbury following the match. We come into today’s game on the back of a superb result at Ipswich Town on Tuesday night. It was a different build up to what we expected to the game, having seen our match at Tranmere Rovers last Saturday called off due to a waterlogged pitch. I must give full credit to the lads for their

2

attitude and application, it was first class, as it has been all season. I also want to once again thank the 88 travelling supporters who made the long journey to Portman Road on Tuesday. To travel over 550 miles on a Tuesday, getting home at 4am in the morning and then getting up for work or school the next day is to be commended. The players and staff appreciate it so much and at times on Tuesday, the only noise you could hear was from our fans – it was great to see. As staff and players we are fully aware of the importance of today’s game to our supporters. I was at Bloomfield Road last week to watch their game with Ipswich and we’re expecting a tough test at Highbury today in what will be a superb

atmosphere, created by both sets of fans. We enjoyed success here last season, beating Blackpool for the first time with a 3-2 victory and we would love nothing more than to replicate that today. To do that, your support is vital and I’m sure you’ll back the lads from the first kick to the last. Enjoy today’s game,

whelan ENJOYING LIFE

AT FLEETWOOD WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

"WHEN YOU ARE PLAYING WELL AND THE FANS ARE BEHIND YOU, THERE'S NO BETTER PLACE. THINGS ARE GOING WELL AT FLEETWOOD. IT'S A GREAT CLUB."

Midfielder Glenn Whelan has played a pivotal role in the Cod Army’s rise up the table, starting the last nine matches.

I

t is no coincidence that Fleetwood Town’s strong run to genuine promotion contenders has coincided with the arrival of a player who has provided the guidance and unstinting work-rate in midfield that has characterised his career at Premier League and international level for a dozen years. In Glenn Whelan’s first nine games, Fleetwood recorded six wins and three draws and, despite his 36 years, he played every minute during that spell. “I’ve been very fortunate with the career that I’ve had and I’ve played a lot of games,’ he told me as we chatted at Poolfoot. “I’ve never really had any long term injuries and certainly had a lot of ups and better times.” Despite the alternative merits of Gaelic football and hurling, football was always the dream growing up. “I was probably more for Gaelic football than hurling. I was a little too soft for hurling! “Unfortunately, for the amount of fans and how hard a sport it is, Gaelic football has only ever been amateur in Ireland. There’s a lot of skill to it and it’s not as easy as you’d think!” Glenn bucked the family trend when it came to choosing Liverpool as his favourite team. “My dad and his family are all Manchester United fans! “I had an elder cousin who, at the time, was a Liverpool fan and I hung around with him. Growing up I wanted to be John Barnes or Robbie Fowler. “They were people I really looked up to as a kid playing on the streets. “After school and on days off it was always football.

44

“Like everybody I had dreams of becoming a professional. Now that it has happened it makes me fully appreciate Mam and Dad, my family and my wife for the support they have given me. “I had loads of friends who shared my ambition but never made it.” Friday evenings were spent supporting League of Ireland side St Patrick’s. “I never trained or played for them but they were the local team growing up. “As a player I was interesting quite a few teams when I was younger but Manchester City were the first to offer me a chance. “I came across when I was fifteen and really enjoyed it. It was part of my growing up and a great experience.” There was a single game for the first team, in 2003 against Welsh side TNS in the Europa League. “Coincidentally, Glenn had started on the bench alongside Joey Barton and came on with just over quarter of an hour left. “There were also two short periods on loan at Bury. “Bury will always be an important part of my football journey. “Nobody wants to see a club fold, particularly one with such a long history. “It’s the people behind the scenes that you feel sorry for because of all the hard work they have put in.” When City manager, Kevin Keegan, heard of interest from Sheffield Wednesday he did not stand in the young midfielder’s way. Glenn moved across the Pennines in the summer of 2004. “I had a year left at Manchester City but the gaffer was very good to me. “He didn’t see me breaking into the first team during that period so felt my interests

were better served with a move for regular league football. “Sheffield Wednesday came in and City let me go. I went on a free. “City could have possibly asked for money or sell-on clauses but they didn’t and I was very fortunate to get the chance to move on. ‘“I had a great time with Sheffield Wednesday. “I didn’t realise how big a club it was until the first time I played. “There were twenty six thousand in Hillsborough for a League One game against Huddersfield Town.” That first season ended with play-off victory at the Millennium Stadium and a match-winning goal. “We played against Hartlepool United and it wasn’t the best of games for a spectator. “We were behind with ten minutes left so did well to first get back into it and then go on to win promotion in extra time. “That was a big game for me with family and friends all over the place. It was a great experience.” Things did not always run smoothly, however, and there was a period of uncertainty in 2006 when he was transferlisted by Paul Sturrock. “The manager and the club were wanting to go in a different direction but I had my wife across by then and a family and my aim was to dig in and work hard to try and get back in. “It’s a small dent in my career but definitely something that I was willing to prove on. “I got player of the year and a few other awards under Brian Laws. “I was happy enough with the way the season went.”

In January 2008, Glenn signed for Stoke City and embarked on what, for many, is the definitive period of his career. Within just a few months he was celebrating promotion to the Premier League and a debut for his country against Serbia in the summer of that same year. It is a tribute to his talent and stamina that his international career is still alive twelve years and over ninety caps later, with many feeling that there is still more to give. The first of 277 top flight games for Stoke came against Bolton Wanderers in August 2008. “To reach the Premier League so quickly was a dream come true for me and quite an achievement. “The debut against Bolton didn’t go great (Stoke lost 3-1 at home) and I think a lot of people had written us off after the first game. “We showed everyone how good we could be and stayed up.” Glenn played twenty-six times as Stoke finished twelfth in the table under Tony Pulis. Over nine seasons at the Britannia, he played against the best at some wonderful stadiums. “I’ve been fortunate enough to play against greats like Sergio Aguero, Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrick Vieira. Being a Liverpool fan, to pit my wits a few times against Steven Gerrard was a thrill. “I have had a few good results against top teams, home and away. “Playing at Anfield was obviously a great thrill but you’ve only to look around to see the great

stadiums we have in the Premier League, like Old Trafford, St James’ Park and the Emirates. “Then there’s Wembley, where I’ve played a few times. “To reach the FA Cup Final in 2011 and qualify for Europe through the cup run was a great achievement for Stoke. “There was definitely a home advantage with the fervour of the fans. “There weren’t too many teams who came to Stoke and turned us over. “We used it to our benefit and we had a great record at the Britannia during the years I was there. “We didn’t always get the credit we deserved for the football we played.” In 2015, both Charlie Adam and Ryan Shawcross described Glenn in glowing terms, as the unsung hero whose work is vital to the team’s success but doesn’t always get noticed. “That’s a tribute from two good friends of mine. I’ve never been a flash player or scored loads of goals. “My background and where I’m from has always been about hard work and giving the best you can. It’s got me far. “I’m more than happy with that. You always need one or two grafters in the team. “People buy players for doing tricks and scoring top goals. “Unfortunately, I don’t have a trick and haven’t scored too many goals.”

A move to Aston Villa in 2017 produced another happy period in his journey. “As with Manchester City, I had a year left on my contract. “I didn’t want to leave Stoke but Villa came knocking. “They should never have been in the Championship with the fans, the players and the facilities they have got. “I had two massive years there. To have helped get them back to the Premier League at the end of that time was another great achievement.” There were back-to-back play off finals. “Unfortunately we were beaten by Fulham first time round but bounced back against Derby County. “There was only ever going to be one winner on the second occasion with the players we had. “We also knew how hard it was losing the final the previous year and didn’t want a repeat. “When you are playing well and the fans are behind you there’s no better place. “Things are going really well at Fleetwood. It’s a great club. “Despite the results we can’t take our foot off the gas. We’ve achieved nothing yet. We have a chance but need to keep working hard. I’ve loved my time so far.” At a time when many are considering hanging up their boots, the motivation has not dimmed and the inspiration continues to spread from the man who simply gets the job done week in, week out.

OUR CLUBS OUR COMMUNITY EFL Clubs are in the heart of communities up and down the country. Using the power of the badge, clubs help tackle some of society’s biggest issues, from helping people in poverty to combating loneliness.

COMMUNITY TRUST AIM TO REDUCE KNIFE CRIME IN THE LOCAL AREA!

On Tuesday 10 March all EFL Clubs will join together for the EFL’s Day of Action to showcase the impact of the crucial work they undertake in communities up and down the country EFL managers and players will be attending events across the country to meet people whose lives have been positively changed through the work of the club in the community. Fleetwood Town Community Trust are set to embark on an exciting new project to reduce knife crime in the local area thanks to a grant from the Police and Crime Commissioner for Lancashire. The police have recently installed knife bins in Blackpool and Fleetwood to give people a safe place to dispose unwanted knives, but is this enough to deal with the underlying drivers of the violence? The Lives Not Knives project aims is to identify the underlying issues faced by children and young people by addressing the root causes and drivers of knife crime.  Young people will also be given a voice which, with the support of the Community Trust, will contribute towards a step change in their behaviour and attitude and which may also change the way the public and voluntary sectors support this particular cohort.  The Community Trust will deliver this programme in local primary and high schools through educational workshops which explore themes such as why people carry knives, the effects of knife and drugs within our community, staying out of trouble, tools for becoming a more responsible citizen, and more. Through interactive activities and roleplay, The Community Trust will also build young people’s skills and confidence to cope with peer pressure and make the right choices, giving children opportunities to practice techniques to improve their mental health and learn how to avoid and resolve conflict, manage anger and communicate.  Lives Not Knives will be rolled out in schools around the Fylde Coast from 1st April. If you would like any further information about this initiative, please contact Primary and Secondary School Education Manager, Ash Moreau, on Ashley.Moreau@fleetwoodtownfc.com.
