managernotes Good evening and welcome to Highbury for my first home game in charge of Fleetwood Town. First of all I’d like to thank everyone involved with the club, the staff, the players and the supporters for the welcome I’ve received during my first week in charge. The response from everyone has been brilliant and it’s made settling in easy, it’s this sort of environment which attracted me to the challenge here at Fleetwood. After being contacted by the club about the role, the enthusiasm of the Chairman and the Technical Director really impressed me, I think these are people who share my thinking and ambition about what we want to achieve in my time here. Talking of that, you may have read in the media my intention to create a top six mentality at the club, every day in training and on match days. The top six is a target I think we can all achieve together, but in the long-term, it’s not something I’m expecting to happen this season. Here at Fleetwood we have a club of real potential with excellent foundations, but it’s a project which now needs time, patience and a lot of hard work. If we do that over the next few years then the aim will be to eventually challenge the top six. I’d like to welcome the staff, supporters and directors of Leeds United to Highbury this evening. It’s funny how football throws up these sort of fixtures and my first home game at Fleetwood comes against my former club. While at Elland Road I met a lot good people, both there and at the training ground, and it was a real honour to manage such a big historic club. I wish Gary Monk all the best for the coming season and obviously I still have a lot of feelings for my ex-players and the supporters and hope they can continue to improve and eventually win promotion back to the Premier League. For us welcoming such a big club to Highbury shows just how far the club have come in the last ten years and it’s our strong intention that this sort of occasion will be a more regular occurrence in the future. I hope you enjoy the game, atmosphere and our performance this evening and I’m sure our players will give everything they have to cause a cup upset and progress to the next round. Enjoy the game.

NATHANPOND PONDY SET FOR 14TH SEASON By David Mitchell Nathan Pond, Fleetwood Town’s longest serving player, has begun his 14th season at Highbury. It is a longevity that has carried him beyond the club appearance record. A milestone of 422 matches was reached in the penultimate game of last season. “Yes, I finally made it!” said the popular defender. “An injury ruled me out for 14 games at the start of the season so I could have got the record sooner. That was really disappointing. Now I’ve got it, I want to extend it. On the day, there was business to take care of and a game to win but once the season had finished I reflected back with pride. Playing for one football club for so long is a real achievement.” The Walsall match featured live on television, one of many ways in which the game has moved on during Nathan Pond’s time at Fleetwood. “The game’s changed a lot. It’s more scientific these days. They measure your body weight, body fat, how far you have run in pre-season. You have a strict diet plan but as a professional you are expected to look after your own diet anyway. There’s no hiding now. It definitely doesn’t get any easier!” Despite all the success that followed, it was an inauspicious debut back on 29th March 2003, against St Helens Town. An away defeat, to be followed immediately by two more. Pondy played in defence alongside skipper Frank Cygal;

“The fans looked up to local lads like Frank, John Riches and Kevin Barnes. They were good to me, took me under their wing and made me feel comfortable. In those days, I definitely wouldn’t have thought I’d be where I am now. “We got a hiding at Highbury but to be able to play it there shows how far the club has come. Parts of the ground weren’t up to standard back then. It’s good that we can host such big clubs at a fantastic stadium
which is satisfying for the Chairman.” Another pre-season game, at Southport, also brought back many memories for Pond, “To be fair, Southport’s not a ground I’ve always enjoyed. I remember many battles in non-league. There were two Christmas games in particular which were strange results.” An impressive set-up on and off the pitch has built up around the 31 year-old over the years. The multimillion pound Poolfoot development has provided a Premier League standard facility, far removed from some of those previously experienced by Pond; “I used to train at Collins Park down in Blackpool, on the Memorial Park next to the ground, at Fleetwood High School and Fylde rugby club. Nothing compares to having your own training ground. Poolfoot is fantastic.” Tonight’s opponents, Leeds United, are the latest big-name club to play Fleetwood during Pond’s time at Highbury, “Leeds are a massive club. It’ll be good to see Charlie Taylor who did well with us. I’m sure it’ll be a good atmosphere for one of the biggest teams in England.” Pond has long been a Manchester City fan and his hopes for their season match what he wants for Fleetwood, “To improve on last year. That’ll do me personally as well.” He feels that City need a centre back so who knows what might happen if he strings a few performances together! A transfer to the Etihad is for dream land but what is real is that Fleetwood’s very own legend will be as fierce a competitor as ever, determined to keep the shirt as he embarks on yet another season in front of his many fans in the Cod Army. Thevisitors INTRODUCING LEEDS UNITED Championship side Leeds United are tonight’s visitors to Highbury Stadium, as they journey to the home of the Cod Army for the first-ever time. Championship side Leeds United are tonight’s visitors to Highbury Stadium, making the trip across the Pennines to the Fylde Coast for an EFL Cup first-round tie, as they journey to the home of the Cod Army for the first-ever time. The Elland Road outfit are competing in their sixth-consecutive campaign in the second-tier, and are now under the stewardship of Garry Monk, who took over as Head Coach in West Yorkshire in June, following Steve Evans’ departure. The former Swansea City cult hero, who served the South Wales based club for over a decade as player will be tasked with improving on United’s 13th placed finish last term. Bedford-born Monk progressed through the youth academy at Torquay United, before moving onto Southampton in 1996, spending eight years on the south coast, where he made 11 appearances. As a young player at the Saints, loan spells, including a return to Torquay, Stockport County, Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley followed, before the defender briefly joined the latter permanently at Oakwell in February 2004. Monk moved to Swansea City on a free-transfer, with the club then in the fourth-tier, his 11-year affiliation with the Welsh side would begin that season, as he helped the Swans to promotion to League One at the end of that campaign. In the years that followed, Monk was a key part of the side that enjoyed a rise through the divisions, Swansea were promoted to the Championship after securing the League One title in 2008,

having also won the Football League Trophy two years previous, whilst competing at that level. After three-years in the second-tier, Swansea were promoted to the Premier League after play-off success against Reading at Wembley in May 2011, with Monk playing 32 games in the historic season. Monk continued to be of service to Swansea in the top-flight, and was a part of the team that won the 2013 League Cup. He retired from in 2014, to become the club’s manager after making 260 appearances for City in all competitions. He led Swansea to eighth in his first full term at the helm, before departing in December 2015. Monk returned to the dugout earlier this summer, when he was appointed at Leeds United.
New signing: Robert Green - Goalkeeper Former England international, Green, signed for Leeds on a one-year deal back in July, following his release from Queens Park Rangers. The 36-year-old, who has a wealth of experience, came through the youth ranks at Norwich City, making 223 appearances for the Norfolk side in a seven-year stay, before moving to East London to link up with West Ham United in 2006. He made 219 appearances over six-years at Upton Park, prior to spending four more years in the capital with Queens Park Rangers.
New signing: Matt Grimes – Midfielder Matt Grimes signed a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Swansea City in July, linking up with Garry Monk once again. The 21-year-old started out at local side Exeter City, making 58 first-team appearances in two-years, having come through the youth set-up. The midfielder swapped Devon for south Wales in January 2015, when Swansea paid £1.75m for his services, so far he has made four appearances.
New signing: Kemar Roofe - Forward Walsall-born Roofe is another summer recruit, making the move to the Whites in a £3m deal from Oxford United. The 23-year-old was a youth team player at West Bromwich Albion, turning professional in 2012. He spent loan time away at Vikingur Reykjavik, Northampton Town, Cheltenham Town, Colchester and Oxford. Six goals in 16 appearances on loan at the Kassam Stadium was enough to earn him a permanent deal in May 2015, and last season, the winger netted 18 times as the U’s gained promotion.

COMMUNITYTRUST Hundreds of Fleetwood Town fans flocked to Poolfoot Farm last week to watch the first team train and meet the players. The club held an open training session on the Tuesday afternoon as the supporters got their first glimpse of new Head Coach Uwe Rosler’s preparations ahead of the new season. Fans then got the chance to meet their heroes in a signing session in Crossbar & Grill and have at their pictures taken with the players. The entire Fleetwood Town squad were on hand to meet the Club’s young supporters and signed a range of merchandise. There was also a free prize draw on the day with a signed FTFC Shirt, a signed Fleetwood Town football and a family ticket for two adults and two children to the Scunthorpe game all being won. Town midfielder Ricardo Kip enjoyed the event and said: “These kind of days are always lovely, the kids are excited to see the players of the club. “They enjoyed it, so it is nice to see that.
“You see the children loving meeting their heroes, the guys that they support. “It is great to give something back to the fans who cheer us on every week, we really appreciate it.”

06.08.2016 SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
Re-wind to last weekend and Fleetwood Town kicked-off their 2016/17 Sky Bet League One campaign at newly-promoted Northampton Town. Uwe Rosler took charge of his first Fleetwood Town match since his appointment as Head Coach, and he was able to call upon a fully-fit squad. Northampton took an early lead in the clash at Sixfields Stadium when Alex Revell’s low shot came back off the left post and went in off goalkeeper Chris Neal in unfortunate circumstances. However, the Cod Army battled back to earn a point when Bobby Grant’s inswinging cross from the right was helped on by David Ball in the box and Victor Nirennold headed in his first goal for Fleetwood from close range.

DEVELOPMENT/YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SQUAD Fleetwood Town’s Development Squad continued their positive pre-season form with a 6-1 victory over Queen of the South at Poolfoot Farm. It was another positive showing by Nathan Rooney’s side at the Cod Army’s training facilities in Thornton, as the Development Squad completely outclassed their opposition from the Scottish Championship. Despite going a goal behind after ten minutes on the clock after Dean Brotherston, Fleetwood roared back through strikes from Ashley Nadesan (x2) Dion Charles, Thomas Grant, and Elliot Osbourne. FTFCACADEMY ACADEMY MISSION STATEMENT ‘To educate, develop and produce creative players that are physically and psychologically strong, technically and tactically astute and can move around the pitch effectively and efficiently winning the 1v1 battles’ Stuart Murdoch, Director of Football/ Academy Manager This is the start of an exciting new project for Fleetwood Town FC as our full Academy opens. FTFC has been on a magnificent journey over the last ten years and now, at the start of the 2016/17 season, we are able to provide coaching and a games programme to players from nine years of age for the first time. As the Club builds from its Non-League roots to an established League club, the infrastructure is starting to reflect the Club’s status. The opening of our Poolfoot Farm training complex and now the establishment of our Academy reflect the progressive outlook of the Club. ur aim is to produce the top Academy on the O Fylde coast, giving an opporunity for youngsters to attain a professional status. T he journey starts now and we look forward to the challenges ahead. Since the introduction of the EPPP (Elite Player Performance Plan), Fleetwood Town are the first club to launch a full elite programme for U9s to U21s from a Category Four base. The Club have been successfully running open trials this summer for all different age groups. It has been a rapid rise, with our youth development infrastructure growing year on year. ways. The multi-million-pound training facility meets all the requirements needed for a Category Three academy. A tremendous amount of hard work has been going on behind the scenes for this to happen. Both the Football League and the Premier League are convinced that Fleetwood Town has the right infrastructure in place to be a successful academy. A number of full-time jobs have been created to enable and we have identified the majority of the UEFA B coaches required to work with all age levels.
