managernotes It’s been a busy start to life as Head Coach of Fleetwood Town, with tonight being my fourth game in just over two weeks. While it was far from ideal to take the job so close to the season, I feel we have already made positive steps and the response from everyone so far has been excellent. I’ve so far tried to stamp some of my thoughts and style onto the team, not just on the training ground but also in the video sessions we do with the players. We’ve also worked hard on setting things up in and around the training ground in the way we like to do things, it’s been very busy but very enjoyable. It’s very pleasing to see how the club are supporting me with my plans and how the players have responded to me already. We have just started what I think is a long process with the players and the club. We have a lot of young players here and they are on a learning curve but they are learning quickly and I believe in the future we will get better as a group. This week I’ve made my first two signings with Chris Long and George Glendon joining the club, both will bring quality and depth to our squad. Chris is a player who will be very suitable for the way we play. He is fast, he works the line and he is a goalscorer. He does not need many chances and he wants to prove himself again.

0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm

Glendon is a player I know well, we have got him under very good conditions from Manchester City. He is not quite ready now to throw him in but we will build him up. I think he has the technical standards and ability I am looking for in a midfield player. Tonight will be a tough game against a newly promoted team but which I hope we will be able to come away with our first win of the season. Finally, I’d like to welcome Michael Appleton and his Oxford United side, along with the supporters and directors, to Highbury Stadium this evening and wish you all a safe journey home after the game. Enjoy the game

have a favourite team;

By David Mitchell

‘I don’t support any particular club, I just love watching and playing football.

Fleetwood Town’s new signing, Ricardo Kip, learned his trade at one of the top clubs in Europe. The 24 year-old was recruited to the youth ranks at Ajax in Amsterdam, aged eleven. It is the club that has won four European Cups and become one of the most successful producers of young talent in the world; ‘It was very nice to play there for almost nine years,” said Kip. “I made it as far as the second team which is called Jong Ajax. “They play in the Dutch second division. I also trained with the Ajax first team at times. “Everything about Ajax was amazing. The training, the trainers, the environment.” Ricardo had to learn to balance school and football commitments; “I lived about forty five minutes away from the club. School started at around half eight, nine in the morning. “The club arranged for a bus to pick me up at about one o clock and take me to football.

“It was a dream as a child to play in England”

“Dutch football, of course, but also Premier League and a few Championship games. Nothing below. Over here I want to keep in touch with Dutch games as lots of my friends play there.’ Three years ago, Kip left Ajax for Almere City; ‘Almere was a satellite club of Ajax. I could have signed another contract at Ajax but had to think of my future. It was a step backwards in one way but a chance to move forward in my career. Almere was a Second Division club. As it happened, it was a very good step for me. I’m a better player now. Last season I scored seventeen goals from midfield which I was very happy about. Three of them were penalties but, still, fourteen’s not bad is it!?’ Ricardo hopes that he can take this form into the new season with Fleetwood; “It was a dream as a child to play in England.

“I trained from half past two and went home again around seven.

“The football in Holland is much slower, moving left and right which is annoying to play against.

“It sounds late but at Ajax we had to study and do homework before going home.

“You have to run and run. I’m a box to box player, an attacking midfielder.

“When you stop football, you need something else. That’s very important. Mind you, I’ve never been that keen on studies!

“I can score goals obviously. Having a facility like Poolfoot for training is bound to help my game.”

I don’t know many footballers who are! I believe that after football you can always do something connected with sport.’ Despite the connection with Ajax, Ricardo does not

Thevisitors INTRODUCING OXFORD UNITED

Birmingham City in November 2003, only managed to make 38 appearances for the side before having to turn to coaching.

Michael Appleton’s Oxford United will travel up to Highbury Stadium tonight for their first Football League One meeting with Fleetwood Town.

After his early retirement, Appleton stayed with the midlands side in a coaching capacity. He spent five years working with youth squads before he was promoted to first-team coach in June 2009. Due to the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo in 2011, Appleton had to take over as caretaker manager for one game.

Uwe Rosler’s Cod Army welcome the newly-promoted Football League One side, Oxford United, to Highbury Stadium after playing each other in the 2013-14 season in League Two. Salford-born Appleton is the boss at Oxford United after he replaced Gary Waddock in July 2014. After a 13th place finish in his first season, Appleton pursued a better finish in his second season and he succeeded, finishing 2nd in League Two gaining automatic promotion and reached the final of the Football League Trophy. The Mancunian fought his way through the youth system at Manchester United before earning his first professional contract in 1994. His career at United littered with loan moves to Wimbledon, Lincoln City and Grimsby Town. Appleton left the Red Devils before the 1997-98 season and signed for Preston North End for a then club record fee of £500,000. In his three-and-a-half-years at the club, Appleton made 145 appearances and score 15 goals. In 2001, Appleton moved away from Preston and signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with West Bromwich Albion. He managed to secure a first team spot in the side straight away but a posterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee kept him out the side until February 2003. His return to football wasn’t successful as he only lasted a total of 28 minutes on the pitch before he was forced to retire from the game, and eventually football. Appleton, who played his last professional game against

6

In November 2011, he moved to Portsmouth to partake in his first official managerial role. Although the role didn’t last long, he signed the likes of Joe Mattock and George Thorne from the Baggies and Kelvin Etuhu on a free transfer. Although he vouched to stay with the club until the end, Portsmouth were struck with administration and a relegation which meant he could not continue. Before joining Oxford in 2014, he had short spells managing both Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers

New signing: Curtis Nelson - Defender Nelson joined Oxford United after his two-year contract at Plymouth Argyle expired. The defender started out his career with seven years at Stoke City as an apprentice before he was released in February 2009. Plymouth then signed him up and after one year in the academy, he made his professional debut for the club. Throughout his time at Plymouth, Nelson made over 200 appearances for the club and scored eight goals.

New signing: Joe Rothwell – Midfielder Rothwell joined Michael Appleton’s side this summer after his time at Manchester United was cut short. The midfielder never actually made a first team appearance for the Red Devils, instead he was sent on loan to both Blackpool and Barnsley or included in the youth team’s fixtures in the three years he was there. Rothwell has also appeared for the national sides u16, u17, u19 and u20 squads.

New signing: Wes Thomas - Attacker Thomas joined the newly-promoted side this summer after leaving Birmingham City on a free transfer. The striker has moved around a lot during his career and has represented 14 different clubs in the last 11 years, even though most of them came through loan deals. A few notable clubs he has played for are Bournemouth, Blackpool and Swindon Town.

COMMUNITYTRUST Although the season has only recently commenced on the pitch, Fleetwood Town Community Trust has continued to be busy with the delivery of the National Citizenship Service programme. Under the direction of Joey Newson and Michael Wilkinson, the popularity and interest of NCS in Fleetwood and Fylde has increased, particularly those young people that want to progress to higher education. Over the summer 36 young people from Fleetwood and the surrounding area took on a challenge that would change not only themselves but their community as part of the Government led National Citizenship Programme.

youngsters improved their personal development through activities like: canoeing, climbing, high ropes, archery and many more. Many fears were conquered and confidence soared within the team with different people stepping up to the mark to lead the team in the activities. The second wave of participants went firstly to Tower Wood to take part in a range of lake and land activities, again conquering many personal fears and developing teamwork and leadership skills. The group quickly bonded leading nicely on to our second week at Hothersall lodge; during this stage the group did many activities to develop their life skills such as cooking and event planning.

The first wave saw 16 youth team players spend a week long residential at Borwick Hall with a second wave travelling to Tower Wood in Windermere. As part of the away and home residential

tedlowery Fleetwood Town’s Honorary Vice President Ted Lowery played a key role for the first home league game of the 2016/17 season against Scunthorpe United as he led out the two teams with the match ball. To mark the start of the new football season, the English Football League (EFL) launched its #EFLStories campaign to tell the stories of all the people who help make the EFL what it is - a football experience for everyone. Across the opening two weekends of the season, the first 72 people featured on the #EFLStories website had the privilege of delivering their club’s new Mitre match ball to the pitch at the first home league game of the season, with #EFLStories ball presentations taking place across all three divisions of the Sky Bet EFL. Ted, who has been with the Cod Army for an incredible 38 years, felt honoured to be the man to carry out the match ball. “It’s got to be one of the best things that’s happened to me,” said Ted. “I’ve been with the club for 38 years, from down in the dumps to where we are now, and of course. “I’ve been to Wembley twice, the first time being in the FA Vase in 1985 and I was there a couple of years ago when we beat Burton Albion. “It’s one of the best days of your life, it’s got to be, it’s the new Wembley.

“When we went to the old Wembley for the FA Vase final, they let me have a wonder on the pitch on the Friday and I thought I would get myself a photograph on the centre spot! “I would have never dreamt we would get to the play-off final at Wembley in the League as we were only in the North West Counties league back then. “When we got to the new Wembley I thought - I’ve got to get a photograph on the centre cirlce at the new Wembley! “I went through the officials to get permission and when I showed them the photograph I had at the old Wembley everyone’s eyes lit up. “They let me go on, so most of the people who were in the stadium then will have wondered what I was doing kneeling down on the centre spot!

Re-wind to Saturday afternoon and Graham Alexander returned to Highbury Stadium with Scunthorpe United. Ahead of the game, Town’s honorary vice president carried out the match ball as part of #EFLStories. The Cod Army took a two-goal lead in the Sky Bet League One clash when Eggert Jonsson headed home and David Ball curled a beauty into the bottom right corner. DEVELOPMENT/YOUTH

YOUTH TEAM Fleetwood Town’s Youth team slipped to a 3-0 defeat in their second EFL Trust North West Youth Alliance league game of the season away at Carlisle United on Saturday morning. Nathan Rooney’s young Codlings suffered their second straight reverse against the Cumbrians, as Max Brown netted a hat-trick for the hosts, in

a frustrating day at the office for the U18s side. Brown opened the scoring mid-way through the opening half of the fixture, finding the net from the set-piece to give United the lead. Brown subsequently doubled the advantage with 57 minutes on the clock, prior to completing the goal scoring later on into the half. Fleetwood’s U18s are next in action on Saturday afternoon, when they will attempt to pick up their first league victory of the season, as they entertain Fylde Coast rivals Blackpool at Poolfoot Farm, kick-off 11AM. FTFCACADEMY ACADEMY MISSION STATEMENT ‘To educate, develop and produce creative players that are physically and psychologically strong, technically and tactically astute and can move around the pitch effectively and efficiently winning the 1v1 battles’ Fleetwood Town’s Academy have been preparing for the launch of the games programme with fitness testing over the last week.

“We will be revisiting these tests at different points throughout the season where we will compare and contrast previous results looking at improvements.”

All age groups, from U9s to U16s, have been involved in a variety of tests.

For more information on the Academy, email stuart.murdoch@fleetwoodtownfc.com

The tests have looked at a variety of different physical components such as speed, agility, power, endurance as well as looking at body composition. Joey Newson, foundation phase lead coach, said: “This has been a great opportunity to gain an understanding on the current players’ physical attributes which will be beneficial for the Academy moving forward.
