GAFFER’SNOTES Welcome to Highbury for tonight’s Emirates FA Cup clash with Bristol City. This evening we face a side we are more than familiar with, having drawn against them just two weeks ago. On that day it was a close encounter which emphasised the real quality Bristol City have within their squad, you only have to look at the new signings they brought in ahead of the game to see the size of the task we were up against. Bristol City are a hugely ambitious club with good players and a good manager, and it’s this challenge which we thrive upon. For my players to come up against a Championship quality squad can only be a good thing, it’s the chance to test ourselves at a higher level. The more we are able to play at this level, the better we will become, and tonight is another chance for us to do that.

“For my players to come up against a Championship quality squad can only be a good thing” On Saturday we stretched our unbeaten run to 13 games against Bristol Rovers, in a competitive clash which I was delighted to come out on top in.

0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm

If we can play with the same intensity and quality as we did on Saturday, hopefully we can keep the momentum going this evening and make history by getting Fleetwood Town into the Fourth Round for the first time. Finally, I’d like to welcome Lee Johnson along with the directors, staff and supporters of Bristol City to Highbury, and wish them all a safe journey home this evening. Enjoy the game,

HUNTING HE WILL GO WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL PICS: STEFAN WILLOUGHBY

Attacker Ashley Hunter is joined top goal scorer for Fleetwood Town this seaon with ten goals Ashley Hunter might have turned his back on football had a Northern Premier League club in Derbyshire not stepped in. Born in Derby, Hunter has always been a Nottingham Forest fan. “My Dad and step-Dad are both Forest fans and used to take me to games. Rob Earnshaw was a favourite. He scored some great goals and I loved his celebrations!” Hunter has had his own share of spectacular gymnastic celebrations. “Ha! I’ve not done one for a while! I know I have to be a little bit careful because I wouldn’t want to get injured doing it.” In the very early days, he was managed by his Dad. “I would be about six or seven. Dad was a good manager. Me and my step brother used to play up front. Derby County picked 4 |

me up a year or so later. I stayed there till I was released at 14.” Hunter struggled to kick start his career over the next three years. “I had a trial at Aston Villa for a few weeks and one day at Barnsley! “Then I had a longer spell of over a year at Burton Albion before being released in 2014. I decided to pack the game in, spend time with my mates and watch Forest.” Fortunately for Hunter, and Fleetwood Town, his fortunes were about to change. “Mum wrote letters to Ilkeston, Notts County and Mansfield Town. I knew a few of the lads at Ilkeston including Akil Wright who later came to Fleetwood. I played centre midfield in my trial game but wasn’t very fit. We were winning 4-0 at half time and I’d

scored all four! They took me off with cramp! I signed and decided to give it a year. If nothing came of it I’d pack up the game for good.” Things happened quickly and Hunter was soon making his mark at Ilkeston, first for the Under 21s. He scored 13 goals in seven games, playing up front alongside Rai Simmons, now at Chesterfield. When a first team opportunity came, Hunter did not waste it, scoring twice on debut. Manager Kevin Wilson described his striker as ‘a dangerous player who never let defenders rest.’ It is not surprising that such goalscoring prowess was soon noticed. “There was an agent looking at a lad called Che Adams. Che left for Sheffield United the day before my Ilkeston firstteam debut. The agent

was at that game to see if there was anyone else and I scored twice. After a while he told me Fleetwood were watching. Stuart Murdoch came to a game but later told me that his wife had been the one who spotted me!” Initially, Hunter went into the Development Squad. “It was a bit strange being away from home for the first time, apart from a fortnight or so at Villa. One early game I remember was playing alongside David Ball and scoring twice at Leeds United.” A first team debut followed in February 2015, just a month after signing. A spectacular run down the right wing left the Peterborough defender trailing and secured Hunter’s position in the eyes of the Cod Army. Since then, he has raced to 73 appearances with 17 goals, playing from the start and off the bench in almost equal numbers. “I’d love to start every time but I’m happy to be in the squad. I like to entertain but it’s important I do my best for the team and myself. Winning is most important, goals and assists a bonus.” Each goal is clearly etched in his mind. “The first was a left foot tap into an open goal against Yeovil. I celebrated as if it was from 40 yards! It was a big moment for me. There was a header against Sheffield United. It was probably the last time I headed the ball! Looking back it’s crazy to see how far I’ve come in just over two years.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWN.CO.UK | 5 WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 5

INTRODUCING

BRISTOL CITY Jake Parker takes a look at today’s opponents, Bristol City... Lee Johnson brings his Bristol City side to the Fylde coast tonight for a Third Round Replay in the FA Cup against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium. Tonight’s opponents have been out-ofform recently as they have dropped to 19th place in Sky Bet Championship, with 27 points. Over the last ten games, City have won one, drawn one and lost eight. Their last win

was a 2-0 win against Ipswich on 3 December. City started out the season promisingly as they won four of the six opening games of the season in the first month, the biggest win in that being against Aston Villa, beating them 3-1. They have only played in one game so far in the FA Cup and that was the goalless meeting at Ashton Gate Stadium on 7 January.

Lee Johnson

MANTOWATCH Today’s man to watch would have to be the Bristol City’s leading goal scorer, Tammy Abraham.

Tammy Abraham

RECENT GAMES

Bristol City secured his services at the start of the current season, as he is on loan from Premier League giants Chelsea and has scored 18 goals so far.

IPSWICH (A) SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP L 2-1

Abraham has spent the entirety of his career at Chelsea, apart from this current loan move but the 19-year-old has managed to become one of the highest scoring players in the country. The striker has been with Chelsea ever since the age of 7 and has two first team appearances.

“I was probably one of the first to arrive in the early years when I was overseeing and checking everything. Over time we have built a strong team and processes. My involvement now is pretty much checking for any oversights and meeting people in an ambassadorial role. It is a pleasure to witness the great work we have been delivering over many seasons.”

“I like to see how the training ground is being used. There might be an Under 18 game on or the Poulton and District primary league. This means that there will be lots of parents milling around and I am always bumping into people I know from the Fylde Coast. I aim to reach Highbury between eleven and half past. I will wander round all parts of the stadium, answering the odd question or two from staff. I keep an eye on how customers interact with staff and vice versa. As Chief Executive I need to experience the customer journey so will observe movements in and around the shop and the ticket office. Feedback is important so I might engage people in conversation as they wait to come in to the ground. We have an impressive matchday operation but are always prepared to fine tune

it, edging forward with improvements. There are so many people involved now, so many levels of responsibility - kiosks, bars, hospitality, safety, desks, reception, press, ticket office, stewarding, policing. In this respect, we are no different to a big football club and our obligations are greater than ever. “I do a little bit on the microphone in Jim’s Bar, giving out team news around two o’clock, handing out team sheets. I will aim to visit the boardroom at some point before the game but will more likely catch up at half and full-time. It can be useful to discuss footballing matters with representatives of visiting clubs although I often find it easier during the week at meetings or on the phone.” “I normally watch the first half from the directors’ seats but after the break I will likely find a space and stand on my own somewhere as the game gets tense! The ticket office will tell me the attendance information. After the game, it’s back to the boardroom for a quick beer before checking that the afternoon has gone well in hospitality and Jim’s Bar. As I make my way home, I am hopefully reflecting on a good result and looking forward to the Football League goals show!”

AN UPDATE FROM THE ACADEMY

Every Sunday the junior teams from the Academy (9-16 year-olds) play against other Academy teams. Four of the teams will play at home, four away. It is worked out so that the even age groups (U10,12,14,16) will play at home when the odds (U9,11,13,15) play away. This Sunday we played against Bury’s Academy. At Poolfoot we are fortunate that even if the grass pitches are not available, we can play on the 4G surface. This may effect kick-off times as we can only play 2 games simultaneously. Usually kick-off times are 10.30am but if we are on 4G two age groups will kick-off at 9.30am and two at 11am. So, if you have nothing else to do on a Sunday morning, you are more than welcome to come and watch our emerging talent and enjoy a coffee and a bacon butty!

Unfortunately the Youth Team game against Wrexham last Saturday was postponed due to the weather. However, the boys though do not get time off, they trained at Poolfoot before fulfilling their ball boy duties at the first team game against Bristol Rovers. You will see them tonight around the pitch, part of the support team trying to help the first team win the game. A scholars’ life is never dull, training full-time, attending college to continue their education and doing various jobs around the training complex to ensure everything ticks over smoothly!

A busy January started for the Under 16’s last weekend with a friendly against Blackpool (if there is ever such a fixture!) All other age groups were playing against Bury but some clubs do not now run an Under 16 group as they have made decisions on Scholarships. At the end of this month difficult decisions will be made regarding who will be offered scholarships at our club. These decisions are the hardest to make as we realise the effect we are having on young boys futures.

FOUNDATIONPHASE

Cod Army

NEXTFIXTURE

JOEY NEWSON

This Phase covers the age groups U9, U10 and U11’s. The teams will play different size games as they move up through the age groups. U9’s can play 4v4, 5v5 or 7v7. Most clubs at this age play 7v7. U10’s play the same size teams and the u11’s can play either 7v7 or 9v9. Again most clubs will play 9v9 so that as they enter the U12 age group they are ready to progress to 11v11 games.
