GAFFER’SNOTES
Good afternoon and welcome to Highbury Stadium as we face Southend. We arrive into the game on the back of a very good week with two away wins which show just how far we have developed throughout the year - not only in consistency of play, but also results. The recent results show we are now capable of not only drawing games away from home, but winning them too. All this is a real credit to the development of the club, team and the players which was evident in win at Sheffield United in front of what was the highest crowd in the history of the club. On Tuesday night we were followed by a strong and vocal away support and I was delighted to win, something which I felt we deserved over the 90 minutes. Today we face a difficult challenge in Southend. When we played them earlier in the season I told my players they would be top six contenders, and I’ve been proven right with their performances since. They recently went on a fantastic 13-game unbeaten run, similar to what we are on now, and it should make for a entertaining and competitive game this afternoon. The priority for us is to keep our run going and reach our first target of the season which is 50 points, this will secure the our League One status for another year. I’d like to welcome Phil Brown and Brian Horton to Highbury today, they are both people with a wealth of experience at a higher level. You can see how they both put their signature on a team and both know exactly what it takes to get out of League One and into the Championship.
0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm
In my opinion Southend are a team who play in League One but already have players with Championship qualities. I expect one of our toughest games of the season today, especially when you consider home many games we’ve played lately compared to Southend. Saying that, when you are on the run we are, it’s far easier, both mentally and physically, to recover and perform at the highest level one again. Enjoy the game,

BIG BEN READY TO STRIKE AGAIN WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL PICS: STEFAN WILLOUGHBY
Defender Ben Davies signed from Preston North End at the start of January and hasn’t missed a minute since. Twenty-one year old defender, Ben Davies, is a Barrow lad and still supports his local team. “My dad was a keen supporter and used to take me pretty much every Saturday. My mate and I used to play football on the back green near home and joined local club Furness Rovers. They were happy days. “I am still in touch with lots of friends from school back then.” Ben’s performance for Furness Rovers in a tournament at Lancaster brought him to the attention of Preston North End. “I was around eleven. Someone rang my dad. I was keen to give myself a chance against better players. For five years, Dad would drive me to Preston straight after school. It was backwards and forwards on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, home 4 |
around nine. I was a bit shy at first and it took me a while to settle in but I surprised myself at how well I coped with all the travel and the experience of being at a big club. “Eventually, I did Mondays as well. “Graham Alexander took my youth team but left for Fleetwood after my first year. “He told us it was too good an opportunity to miss.” Graham Westley gave Ben a first-team debut for Preston in January 2013, at home to Coventry City. “It was all a bit of a blur but I thought I did well. I kept my place for the next game, against Shrewsbury, but gave a penalty away and we lost 2-1. That was definitely a learning experience. The pace was quicker than in the youth team and I got yellow cards in the three
games that I played. To be fair, I hadn’t trained with much with the first team. They were struggling a bit and I think they just wanted to mix it up a bit. I did my best and the manager seemed pleased with me.” With Westley sacked immediately after Ben’s three games, the run ended. The following season was to start on loan in League Two, at York City. “It was my first time away from home and I joined a brilliant set of lads. “We started well Nigel Worthington, off, then put in a run towards the end season.”
under tailed good of the
Ben made 47 appearances during that 2013-14 season and featured in the remarkable sequence of games which propelled City back up the League Two table, culminating in two tense matches against Fleetwood Town in the
play-off semi-final. After half a dozen games for Preston at the start of the following season, next stop was Tranmere Rovers. “I was excited to go but they were struggling. Everyone was a bit down. The manager, Rob Edwards, got sacked soon after I arrived. Micky Adams came in and told me he was using his own players. It happens in football.” During 2015-16, there were further loan periods at Southport and Newport County. “I was a bit reluctant to drop out of the leagues with Southport but had a month there and enjoyed it. It’s really important to go get some loan experience, especially if you are training but not getting games at your parent club. At Newport, the pitch got progressively worse because of the rugby. You had to find a way to win games. Saying that, it was another enjoyable period. Every loan I’d had was with teams at the bottom. It is much different coming into a side with Fleetwood where they are getting results.” Ben quickly settled into first-team action. “You can get on the ball more with three at the back and I was thrilled when the gaffer told me how he wanted to use me. I am playing games and enjoying every day. We’ve had away games at some brilliant stadiums. However, I know I need to keep my head down and work hard. I’m not taking anything for granted.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM WWW.FLEETWOODTOWN.CO.UK | 5
In this issue of Cod Army, we asked our consistant defender some questions regarding how he became the player he is today. Who is your best mate in the footballing world? “I mean I live with Alan Browne from Preston North End but I don’t think he’s my best mate!” Who is the best player you have ever played against? “Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho in pre-season a few years ago. He could turn on a sixpence, was so sharp and always five steps ahead of everyone.” What is the best stadium that you have ever played in? “That’d have to be St. James Park, Newcastle for Preston. I Couldn’t believe the noise when they scored!” Have you got a favourite save you have scored in your career so far? “I can’t really answer that one as I’ve never scored a professional goal!” What is the best thing about being at Fleetwood Town? “I’d have to say the fact that the whole club is aiming forward. That’s a real big thing for me.”

Southend started out promisingly and carried on that form into recent weeks as they have only lost one of their last four games in the league. United drew two of those games, which were against Charlton and Swindon, and a win against Rochdale thanks to Simon Cox’s 100th career goal.

“It was a great day out and I really enjoyed it. I started coming to other games, then did some work experience and now I’m here full-time!” Courtney began full-time employment in the summer of 2014 when Fleetwood got promoted at Wembley. He is part of the Commercial department, ensuring a quality experience in the Parkside hospitality. “If there isn’t a function the night before matchday, we will have set up on the Friday so that when I come in to the ground at half past nine on the Saturday it’s just a case of getting everything switched on and ready. “The hospitality is open from quarter to twelve on Saturdays, half past five on Tuesdays. I communicate with Martin Booker and the bar staff to ensure that every little detail is right for the guests as they arrive. We might be welcoming anyone from individuals and couples through to groups of ten or twelve. “We have been fortunate to welcome some top class football people into the Parkside, such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Brendan Rogers. Town player and also present the match ball to the sponsors for the day. Just before kick-off, I take them down to pitch side for a picture in the centre circle. As we walk back across the pitch, there is usually some light-hearted banter from the party they are with! We always put a framed photograph together for the sponsor as a memento of the day. “Most of my work is done before kick-off. I get to see the game from the Parkside balcony, one of the best views in the stadium. I might be in radio contact with others in case there is an issue in hospitality, or maybe to do with the 50/50 draw which I supervise at half time. “The winning number is usually called about five minutes before half time and we have had some massive prizes. We then have to try and find the winner for a presentation near the tunnel, not always that easy! I have to say it is really good when we can reward the loyal fans who have put money in every week. “The bar in the Parkside usually stays busy if we win. I stick around. I like to find out how people have enjoyed the experience. Feedback is important. I’m usually away at six to half past on a Saturday, between half past ten and eleven in midweek.” WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 11

COMMUNITYTRUST EFL Trust Kids Cup Poolfoot Farm welcomed 30 primary schools from the Wyre and Fylde area to take part in the EFL Trust Kids Cup on Tuesday. The competition saw 240 youngsters playing for the chance to represent Fleetwood Town in the Area phase of the EFL Trust Kids Cup, where they will face other schools representing League clubs. Ribby and Wrea Primary School won the tournament, beating Shakespeare Primary School in a nervy penalty shoot-out, after a thrilling final. Ribby and Wrea will now represent Town in March when they take on Bradford City’s representative team in the next round and will hopefully go on into the regional and national finals too. Larkholme Primary School came out on top in the plate as they beat Mayfield Primary in the plate final, a competition for the teams which finished third and fourth in their groups. Lewis Horrocks, Fleetwood Town’s School Sport Co-ordinator said: “We were delighted by the number of schools taking part, despite the wet weather. “The standard of football is really high and the competition was really close at times, with a fantastic level of sportsmanship shown.”
The Kids Cup involves over 20,000 children nationally and is one of the country’s largest football competitions. The eventual winners of the Kids Cup will get the chance to play at Wembley before the Sky Bet Play- Off Final of their club’s division. The competition took place at Fleetwood Town’s £9 million state of the art facility, Poolfoot Farm. Poolfoot Farm has 18 pitches, including a floodlit 4G artificial pitch, a gym, a café, a bar and offices and it was opened by Sir Alex Ferguson in April 2016. Matt Hilton Director of Community Trust

ACADEMY&DEVELOPMENTSQUAD STUARTMURDOCH
AN UPDATE FROM THE ACADEMY January is a time of decision making in the Academy. Scholarships need to be offered so that the boys who are not taken on have time to try to secure a scholarship elsewhere. Exit trials are arranged in February by the EFL for those who are released in an attempt to get as many boys as possible placed. We have around 16 boys in that age group at present and unfortunately some are going to be disappointed. Once decisions are made, those boys offered scholarships will be involved with the youth team to a greater extent, in preparation for next season.

January has produced 11 goals in the last 2 youth team games, but unfortunately we have only taken one point! Having lost 3-2 previously,Saturday saw us share 6 goals with PNE. Although having most of the play in the first half we found ourselves 1-3 down at half time. A spirited second half saw 2 goals by Dominic Kerrigan bring the score to 3-3 and in the final minutes Preston had to clear twice from under their crossbar. A well earned point. Just before this weekend’s first team fixture against Southend United, the under-18’s will be playing against Accrington Stanley.

It has been another good week in the my phase, the u16’s entertained Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night at poolfoot farm, the game ended in a draw which is a great result against a top Category 1 academy. The Academy played Shrewsbury last Sunday, the u12’s won with Thierry Bennett scoring the goal in the closing stages of the game, which made the long journey even more worth while. The u15’s entertained Blackpool and also won which was pleasing to see. This week has been sports testing, so all my age groups have been put through their paces with a variety of fitness tests.

JOEY NEWSON
The turn of the new year has seen the start of our Under 7 and Under 8 pre academy programmes. We have currently invited over 30 players into the club across these age groups to be coached and developed using the club and academy’s coaching and playing philosophy. Our aim for the pre academy is to develop and improve players’ technical ability for their grassroots clubs and potentially for our future Under 9’s groups. WWW.FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM | 21
