JOHN
SHERIDAN G
ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture with Plymouth Argyle. I’d like to extend that welcome to Derek Adams, his staff and players, as well as the supporters and directors from Plymouth. We’ve had almost two weeks without a first team match due to last week’s game at Oxford United being postponed. This has allowed me to spend valuable time on the training ground with the players, after a whirlwind few days before the MK
Dons match. I’ve been happy with the application of the players in training since I’ve arrived, and I’m hoping we can carry that into today’s game. I’d like to thank the supporters for the welcome I got at Highbury last time out. I thought we played well, and were unlucky to only come away with a point from the game. We created several chances – especially in the second half – and we showed great heart to come from a goal behind and dominate the rest of the match. Now to today’s opponents Plymouth.
They are a team who are playing with a lot of confidence and are on a great run, which has seen them go from the bottom of the table into the play-off positions. Personally for me, I enjoyed over two years managing down at Home Park, and still have good memories and a lot of praise for the work James Brent has done. Enjoy the game,
John

DIAGOURAGA TAKING
HIS TIME AT TOWN WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL PICS: STEFAN WILLOUGHBY
Toumani Diagouraga is taking his time at Fleetwood a game at a time after making the move from Plymouth. It is fair to say that Fleetwood Town midfielder, Toumani Diagouraga, has clocked up many thousands of miles and experienced all the turns of football’s wheel of fortune in over 450 games since making his debut for Watford back in 2005. This afternoon we welcome one of his former clubs to Highbury. Toumani signed for Fleetwood from Plymouth in the January transfer window. “These are always different occasions because there are people to catch up with but that is for afterwards. I’ve still got a lot of friends at Plymouth but we have an important game to win first.” Paris-born Toumani’s career was sparked by France winning the World Cup in 1998. He was eleven years old at the time. “When that happened my friends and I went out and signed up for a team. Zidane was my hero. He was every Frenchman’s favourite player. PSG were my favourite club side. I started playing just behind the strikers for my local 4 || 4
club from until around fifteen or sixteen. There was always plenty of support for football in my family. “My uncles all played football. A few became professional in France and Italy.” After impressing in trial games in Paris, Toumani joined the Watford academy in 2003. It was a big move for a seventeen year-old. “I wasn’t getting a lot of opportunities back home. As a young lad with dreams you can’t turn opportunities like that down.” Despite attracting interest from Chelsea, Toumani stayed at Watford and signed a four year deal. His progress was rewarded with a number of games for the first team. “My first team debut was in the League Cup against Wolves in September 2005. It was tough but a proud occasion for me. As a young lad in your first game you hope for a win and we got one.” The long-awaited league debut came at Burnley three months later.
“Burnley were doing quite well that season. I was happy to be on from the start and part of it. “There were more first team opportunities in different competitions which I was delighted with but after that it was important for me to go on and get regular football out on loan. “It is better than just being around the first team. I was in the squad for the Watford v Leeds play off final at Cardiff in 2006 but as a young lad you just want to play regular football.” Periods at Swindon and Rotherham were followed by a move to League Two Hereford, starting in August 2007. There were fifty appearances that season, a first senior goal and the club won promotion to League One for the first time since 1978. “This was my best loan period. I played nearly every game and it was lovely to taste promotion and be a big part of it. The goal was against Bradford City. The ball came over the centre back, I went through and slapped it past the
keeper. I signed a three-year contract that summer but, unfortunately, we were relegated the following season and it was time for me to move on after some good times. “They are still a club whose results I watch for.” Toumani signed a long-term contract with Peterborough ahead of the 2009-10 season and started well but following a managerial change he moved to Brentford on loan and established himself enough to gain a contract. Despite losing his first cup final to Carlisle at Wembley in 2011, and getting sent off, then coming back from a two-month injury, there were many good times. After being denied promotion to the Championship in the cruellest way in 2013, automatic promotion the following season was the best response. “The final showdown against Doncaster was a roller coaster. After we had been awarded the penalty in the last minute, we were confident. To miss and then lose at Wembley in the play-off final was difficult. “To get automatic promotion the year after was amazing after what had happened. “We targeted top two and achieved it. You can’t get too carried away with the highs or too down with the lows in football. You have to stay levelheaded and just carry on.” 2014-15 saw Brentford reach the Championship play-offs, only to lose to Middlesbrough. Toumani completed 200 appearances for the Bees in February 2015 and received the Supporters Player of the Year Award.

T OUMANI DIAGOURA GA FE ATU R E
“Boro were our bogey team. Getting the award was good but, for me, it has always been about the team.” He moved north to sign for Leeds United in January 2016 and made his debut three days later…against Brentford! “I signed on the Saturday and played against Brentford on the Tuesday. For the most part I got a good reception!” Opportunities were limited at Leeds and after further loan football at Ipswich ‘a brilliant club’, the next stop was Plymouth. He joined as a free agent in October 2017. “I had a very good time there and my form was good but it was a long way from my family in the north. I used to fly back from Exeter to Manchester on my day off. “There’d be less than 24 hours at home then I was on the way again. That side was tough but the football was great. Family are the most important thing in life. My little boy plays and loves it. “He’s quite good and plays on a Saturday morning so can’t see me play often. Length of contracts and all that goes with it becomes even more important when family come along.” A move to Fleetwood reunited Toumani with former Brentford manager Uwe Rosler and he made an early impact, scoring on debut at Southend two months ago. The thirtyyear old has had a long journey but is not ready to look back just yet. “There will be time for that in the future. For me, it is all about the next game. My goal on debut was nice but the priority is to move up the table. We are in a tough position but we’ve got the ability to come through.”

YOUR GUIDE TO FORTHCOMING HOME AND AWAY FIXTURES Our next home game is against Northampton Town on the 24th March. The Cobblers enjoyed a solid first year in League One last season, finishing 16th but currently sit 19th in the division. Earlier in the season, Town enjoyed a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a Devante Cole strike. Bristol Rovers (pictured right) are next up after that on Easter Monday, and they will be looking to make a late push towards the playoffs. The Cod Army beat Rovers at HIghbury last season 3-1, and a similar result will help John Sheridan’s side climb the table. Promotion chasing Wigan Athletic (pictured right) then make the trip to Highbury for a Lancashire derby. Paul Cook’s side have impressed in League One and the Emirates FA Cup this season, notably knocking out Premier League league leaders Manchester City in the last 16.
Charlton Athletic (pictured left) will play host to the red and whites at The Valley on the 17th March. Karl Robinson’s side are just outside the playoffs in League One, even though they have only had one win since the start of February. Just three days later, Fleetwood take a trip to Rochdale (pictured left) to face Keith Hill’s side. The side who are second bottom in League One are currently sitting nine points from safety. However, Dale have enjoyed some better times recently in the FA Cup, having faced off against Premier League Tottenham. Fleetwood return to the capital at the end of March to face AFC Wimbledon. Neil Ardley’s men will be looking for a much-needed win to ease their relegation fears. The Cod Army will be hoping for the same outcome the last time these two sides met in August, running out 2-0 winners after a brace from forward Devante Cole.

MANAGERPROFILE HEAD2HEADSTATS Derek Adams was appointed Plymouth Argyle manager back in June 2015. The 42-year-old saw instant success at the Pilgrims, as he guided the side to the League Two PlayOff final in his first season. Unfortunately, they lost out to AFC Wimbledon. Adams then earned automatic promotion in the same division the season after, as he managed to take the side to a second-place finish, missing out on the top spot on the final day of the season. The Glaswegian had a long standing playing career, scoring 67 goals in 318 games.

He then saw multiple loan spells drag him away from Celtic Park before making the move to St Mirren. After 55 games, he joined Ross County and spent two years there. Plymouth then brought the Irishman to Home Park in 2015 on a free transfer, and has since made over 100 appearances for the club.

INS IDE V IEW
INSIDEVIEW
Ahead of this afternoon’s match against Plymouth Argyle, Craig Bratt asked Plymouth Herald Sports Reporter Chris Errington for his thoughts on all things Pilgrims related. CB: Plymouth have been on a simply remarkable run, as they are on a six-match winning streak. What has been the secret behind Argyle’s incredible form? CE: “There were a combination of factors behind Argyle’s dreadful start to this season. They picked up a lot of injuries, with striker Ryan Taylor suffering a broken ankle in the season opener, which was a huge blow. The position worst affected by all the injuries was goalkeeper, as there was a time when all three of their senior keepers were all out injured. One major plus from this season has been the form of on-loan Norwich City shot-stopper Remi Matthews. After a switch to a 4-3-3 formation by manager Derek Adams in December, Argyle’s season was totally transformed. Adams has been able to stick with a settled side who all know their jobs and responsibilities That is always important for any football team.” CB: Since Fleetwood won 2-1 at Home Park in October, both sides fortunes have changed. Would you perhaps mark that defeat for Argyle as the turning point of their season?
CE: “It was a key moment in the season because after the game there was a players-only meeting in the Argyle dressing room. No-one outside those four walls will know exactly what was said but, presumably, they were able to clear the air about certain things. At that point, Argyle were bottom of the table with five points from 12 games and were four points adrift from a position of safety. After that dressing room meeting, Argyle had good draws against Shrewsbury Town and Blackburn Rovers and then clinched only their second League One win of the season, beating AFC Wimbledon 1-0. Those results gave the Pilgrims renewed hope.”
Search #3SIMPLETOOLS to find out more
CB: Both sides have had a week’s rest after the inclement weather postponed their games last weekend. Do you think this has done Argyle a favour, or has it killed momentum for the side? CE: “Argyle have won six successive games and a seventh would be their best run since their title-winning season of 2003/04. They ground out an important 1-0 win against Bradford City last time out and I am sure they would have been desperate to keep the momentum going by playing away to Rochdale last Saturday. Instead, like Fleetwood, they had the weekend off. Momentum is such an important thing in football and you want to keep it going so Argyle will really want a good result against Fleetwood and set themselves up for the rest of the campaign.”
Chris Errington CB: Argyle face former manager John Sheridan this afternoon, who had a stint in Devon between 2013-2015. How well regarded was Sheridan for his time at Home Park? CE: “When John Sheridan was appointed in January 2013 there was a very real chance of Argyle being relegated from League Two but he led them to safety, albeit by only a point. There is no doubt in my mind that the Pilgrims would have gone down under a lot of other managers. Sheridan then took Argyle to a 10th place finish the following season and to the League Two play-off semi-finals in 2014/15. He left after the two-legged defeat by Wycombe Wanderers and I think that was the right time for both parties to go their separate ways. Argyle were able to bring Derek Adams to Home Park as Sheridan’s successor and that has worked out very well for them.” CB: Who is the Green Army’s dangerman for Saturday’s clash, and why? CE: “Graham Carey is top of the charts for Argyle when it comes to goals and assists. He has been involved in almost exactly half of Argyle’s goals this season. He was a major reason behind their promotion as League Two runners-up last season and, after a slow start to this term, has really stood out with his performances. He is capable of scoring a goal from almost anywhere and his set piece delivery is usually very good.” CB: What is your prediction for the match? CE: “I would expect Fleetwood under Sheridan to be well organised and try to get at Argyle from the off. On the other hand, I expect Argyle to defend strongly and try to catch Fleetwood on the counter attack, and make the most of any attacking set pieces they get.” Fleetwood Town v Plymouth Argyle | 11

Disabled people constitute the largest minority group at around 15% of the population and this number is increasing year on year. Naturally, a large number of disabled people are football fans too and we are pleased to take this opportunity to thank them for their continued loyalty and dedication to their club and our competitions.

COMMUNIT YTRUST Kickstart your future!
KICKSTART is an ambitious innovative partnership project to encourage more active and healthier lifestyles for adults in drug and alcohol recovery by getting involved in regular sport and physical activity.
Full Time
The Trust started this free programme in partnership with Lancashire Sport two years ago as recovery football for people aged 16 and above. Over this period of time the group has grown from 8 participants in the first year to now over 30 members. It is a healthy lifestyle and behavioural change programme which helps people in drug treatment services stay drug free. The programme also aims to alleviate individuals with drug problems returning to the community from custodial prison sentences supporting them to change behaviours to break offending patterns. The weekly programme which takes place at Fleetwood Rugby Club involves individuals taking part in physical activities and educational workshops. Once a month we play in tournaments around Lancashire, we have recently attended tournaments in Preston, Everton and Blackburn.
We have also held our own successful tournament at Poolfoot Farm. This programme is not just all about playing football, we also meet up and socialise and attend Fleetwood Town FC home matches. We are now looking to expand the group by progressing into extra activities, for example a walking group and other fitness sessions. Phil Bowker - Sports Activator, said: ‘KICKSTART has made a real difference to people’s lives through building confidence, increasing mot helped so many people change their lives for the better. It has created an opportunity for men to shift their relationship with health from something they think about to something they practice daily through lifestyle habits. James who attends weekly said; “I love this session, it’s changed my life and have even found a job after years of being unemployed” Ian said, “I am so happy to be a part of this group and proud of myself, with the help of Phil I have now been signed off from the mental health programme and looking forward to the future”

TRANMERE ROVERS * EFL Youth Alliance Cup fixtures ** FA Youth Cup fixtures
Today’s match marks Luke Bussey’s last as Fleetwood Town’s Head Physiotherapist, an appointment which began in 2013 after a chance meeting with Graham Alexander at the Trafford Centre! “I had been at Bolton Wanderers but had previously worked with Graham at Burnley. I was glad of the opportunity to step up from being an assistant. It looked the right environment to come into. “We always base any fitness advice on the physical facts and the history of the player while the day to day contact with a player who is, in his mind, at the worst point in his career is definitely one of the biggest challenges. We have worked hard on our rehab programmes and all the medical staff are consistent in their approach. It is important for a player to see that and remain positive throughout. “I like to be a calming influence, in the background. A successful game is when I stay on the bench and the players get through without injury. You get to know them and can learn to recognise real pain. Usually, the player will lie very still in that situation and not make much noise.” What impressions will Luke take
away from ten years connected with football? “Every day is different. It is a fluid environment. Working with players at a high level was my reason for coming into the game and I’ve had the chance to do that. I’ve had a very fortunate career. I leave happy with the level of service that we have been able to provide at Fleetwood but you have to constantly reflect on your practice or you get left behind in a profession where progress is so rapid. The play-off final win over Burton Albion at Wembley in 2014 was a personal highlight. “I’ve been to Wembley twice, previously with Burnley when they were promoted to the Premier League. For professionals, working in such an environment is as exciting as it is for the players. It is a surreal experience on the day because you have a job to do. It’s when you look back that it feels so special for you and the family.” Luke is taking up a position within the NHS and looking forward to the birth of his first child in April. “There are definitely mixed emotions for me at this point in time but I’m looking forward to new challenges at home and at work!”
