BARTON Fleetwood Town’s Head Coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against Burton...

0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm

G

ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match against Burton Albion. We’re looking to continue our excellent home form today against a tough opponent in Burton. Following the victory over Coventry City, we are now unbeaten in our last five league matches here at Highbury. We’ve spoken about wanting to make it difficult for away teams to come here and get results, and it’s pleasing for me to see that we are starting to turn Highbury into a fortress. We aim to continue that impressive run today. Last weekend’s match at Luton saw Ross Wallace reach a special milestone in his career. It was his 500th appearance of his career, and it goes without saying what a fantastic achievement that is. It was a shame that we

couldn’t get the result that we wanted from the game, but for us to have a player like Ross is our dressing room has been invaluable so far. He may have only played 14 times for the club, but his experience has already proved to be massive in helping the younger players in the team. Now onto today’s opponents, Burton. They have had a similar start to the season to us, and sit one place below us in the league table on the same amount of points. They have also enjoyed a good cup run in getting to the last eight of the EFL Cup where they will face Middlesborough on Tuesday, so we’re aware of how tough a game this is for us. Saying that, we as players and staff are keen to start off our busy festive period with a victory today. I’d also like to welcome Burton’s manager Nigel Clough, his staff, their players, supporters

Fleetwood Town v Burton Albion

and directors to Highbury, and wish them a safe journey home following the match. With this being our final home match before Christmas, I’d like to wish all our supporters a very Merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you back at Highbury on Boxing Day when we face Doncaster Rovers. Enjoy the game,

EASTHAM EYES NEXT

MILESTONE AT TOWN WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Ashley Eastham has recently made his 100th EFL appearance for the club, and is not looking to slow down any time soon, eyeing the next milesone.

F

leetwood Town’s central defender, Ash Eastham, joined a select group of eight others who have made 100 EFL appearances for the club. The milestone was reached in the recent 3-0 win over Coventry. During that spell there have been precious few games where the 27 yearold has left the field before the end so, ironically, it was illness that ruled him out for most of the second half. “I wasn’t aware of how few players had reached one hundred. I look at the top figure, David Ball’s 179, and think to myself that after signing a new contract until the summer of 2021 it would be a really good goal to set my sights on and be proud of if I can progress my football and stay fit.” Ash was more than happy to sign an extension for manager, Joey Barton. “The manager was pleased with what I was giving and wanted me to commit to the club going forward. I like what we have in place. “We are always looking for solutions and positives and it’s the sort of environment that I want to come to day-in, day-out. A lot of the lads when they come comment on the training facilities we have and I can compare them favourably with other clubs I’ve been to. “At some of them you get changed in the changing rooms and have to walk five or ten minutes down the road in the cold to get to the training ground. It might be on a random cricket pitch with no floodlights for when it goes dark.” His league debut was right back in the early days of Fleetwood’s EFL journey, a solitary appearance in September 2012, against fancied Port Vale. “I needed some game time at Blackpool. Manager, Ian Holloway, was a big friend of Micky Mellon and suggested I came to Fleetwood for a month. Youl Mawene and

4

Steve McNulty were established as centre halves and Fleetwood were doing well. I was the young back-up and not really in a position to knock at Mickey’s door and demand to be given my chance.” There was a game in the Johnstone Paint Trophy at Rochdale, a club that would play its own important part in Ash’s career, followed by the Port Vale match. Sadly, it didn’t work out. The visitors were on a good run, scoring many goals, and went on to gain promotion from League Two that season.

AFTER SIGNING A NEW CONTRACT UNTIL THE SUMMER OF 2021, IT WOULD BE A REALLY GOOD GOAL TO SET MY SIGHTS ON AND BE PROUD OF IF I CAN PROGRESS MY FOOTBALL AND STAY FIT.

“We lost 5-2 and, inevitably, I didn’t stay any longer. I went on to Notts County and kept my progress going there with four games over the next month.” On returning to Highbury in July 2016, Ash made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Northampton Town. “It was Uwe Rosler’s first game. It wasn’t a classic, that’s for sure and it seems such a long time ago! I feel that I’ve come on a good personal journey with this club since then.” Ash’s second game was four days later, against Leeds United in the EFL Cup. “That was a big occasion. The gaffer had obviously previously managed Leeds and not lasted too long. He was pretty fired up that evening. Leeds had a bit of swagger and we were unfortunate not to get a result, taking it to penalties.”

By the time of the FA Cup replay against Southport, in November 2016, Ash was a regular in the first team with fourteen more league games to add to that solitary 2012 appearance. The game marked a turning point for both him and the team as a whole. “I remember the Southport game as being a key night within the whole season. It triggered a change in formation defensively as we went to three at the back in extra time as I remember. “An unbeaten run took us to the playoffs. We were really well-drilled and it was new to me. Centre halves don’t always feel comfortable with three at the back but I kind of really took to it, particularly when I was on the right side. “Myself, Pondy, Cian and, later, Ben Davies were a really good combination. When Ben came I was able to move from the left side to my favoured right. “There were occasions when we nicked wins without being over-impressive in possession. “Teams were finding it hard to break us down, though. We were fast on the counter and scored a lot of goals that way. Opponents knew that once they went behind it would be hard to come back.” Ash weighed in with a couple of important goals of his own, both in April. They were in the away wins at Oxford United (1-3) and Peterborough (1-2). “The good thing about the Peterborough game was that we secured our place in the play-offs in League One for the first time. The biggest disappointment before the playoffs was the Bolton defeat at home. “It was a bit of a bizarre game, really, and we weren’t set-up for it. The squad had played a lot of games that season and we had burnt ourselves out. The energy and zip were lacking against Bradford City over the two legs.”

PLAYER BIO NAME: Ashley Thomas Eastham AGE: 27 BIRTHDAY: 22/03/1991 POSITION: Defender PREVIOUS CLUBS: Blackpool (09-13) Hyde United (09 L) Cheltenham Town (09-10 L) Carlisle United (10-11 L) Bury (11-12, 13 L) Fleetwood Town (12 L) Notts County (12 L) Rochdale (13-16) Fleetwood Town (2018-Present) Did You Know? Eastham won the Champagne Moment of the Season whilst at Bury for his 90th minute equaliser in their 3-3 draw against Huddersfield.

There haven’t been too many disappointing games for Fleetwood’s most consistent performer over the last two and a half seasons but one that springs to mind was the Third Round FA Cup tie against Leicester City at home last January. “The atmosphere around Highbury was brilliant but, unfortunately, I got injured. I had gone up for a header against Slimani and felt my calf on landing. It was a shame because I missed a big night in the replay at the King Power. The FA Cup is a bit of a strange competition. “It pits big and small clubs together and we showed against Leicester how far a bunch of motivated players can go against much superior opposition on paper. It happens so often in that competition. Every underdog wants a story to tell to their grandchildren.” An away win at Scunthorpe United back in August was as good as it has got performance-wise. “It was probably the most impressive team performance during my time at the club. We were solid at the back but like the Red Arrows going forward. We scored five but could have had ten. The other big away win, at Doncaster,

was different. They had a few chances in the first half and it could have been two or three all at half term. We showed how we can play when everything comes together.”

WE CAME OUT THE TRAPS AND THE FANS WERE BUZZING WITH OUR PERFORMANCE. THE ATMOSPHERE WAS BY FAR THE BEST I HAVE WITNESSED FOR A HOME GAME AT HIGHBURY. IT WAS UP THERE AS MY PROUDEST MOMENT.

Then there was Sunderland away, just a couple of weeks later. “Playing at the Stadium of Light for the first time was a great thrill. Some admit to getting nervous in front of bigger crowds but for me they are the kind of games you want to be in as a professional. It was a tough day. They are massive at this level and we did well to take the draw, even missing a penalty.” The game that has arguably given Ash most personal pleasure was Fleetwood’s first

Fleetwood Town v Burton Albion

EFL win, by 3-2, over Blackpool, in October. “There was a lot of build up going into the game and the pressure was on to deliver a first win. You want to be a part of the celebrations and the banter afterwards on social media but we didn’t want to be left with egg on our faces. “We came out of the traps and the fans were buzzing with our performance. The game then went cagey as many derbies do but we scrapped and dug out a result. “The atmosphere was by far the best I have witnessed for a home game at Highbury. It is up there as my proudest moment.” The quiet, unassuming Eastham is understandably proud of his century of EFL games and there isn’t a hint of show about his desire to achieve greater things and that EFL record appearances total. He takes nothing for granted. “I have always wanted to be at a level where the manager can depend on me week in week out. A centre half has to be pivotal for the team. “I like to think that I give a performance week in week out. I want to be a leader and consistently good.”

The Danger Man

N

igel Clough was appointed Burton Albion manager for the second time in December 2015, replacing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Burton offered Clough’s first managerial role back in 1998, when he became playermanager whilst the side were in the Southern Football League Premier Division. Whilst at Burton, Clough won the Conference Premier Manager of the Month in December 2008, after an 11-win streak. Derby County was next and the 52-year-old guided the side to their best start to a season in 106 years in 2011, winning their first four games. A move to Sheffield United followed in October 2013. Whilst there, he won LMA FA Cup Manager of the Season after reaching the semi-finals.

iam Boyce signed for Burton Albion back in June 2017 from Scottish side Ross County, and has started the season well scoring nine goals so far in all competitions. The forward started his professional career at Cliftonville where he won ultiple awards including IFA Premiership Player of the Month in April 2010 and the 2009/10 NI Football Writers’ Player of the Year. A brief spell in Germany followed at Werder Bremen II before returning to Cliftonville in 2012. In his second stint at the club, he scored 51 goals in 85 appearances. A move to Ross County would follow and the 27-year-old scored the first ever top-flight hattrick in their history in a 3-0 win over St Mirren. Boyce has also represented Northern Ireland at U19, U21 and first team levels.

ACADEMY WITH CIARAN DONNELLY ACADEMY MANAGER

As we approach Christmas, the academy staff are reflecting on the first half of the season. I think we can all agree that we are making great strides and improving in all areas. The Under 18s are currently performing really well and a lot of credit has to go to the team of staff who are supporting that group. Simon Wiles has been excellent since moving into the role of lead coach, but he also has an excellent support team in Steve Macauley as under 18 physio, Ryan Shorrock who heads up performance analysis and Jack Holroyd as the sports scientist. It has been a pleasure for myself seeing this team of people work together to get the best results for the group of players. I believe we are developing players to a great standard through the attention to detail, and innovative ideas being adopted by this group of staff. The academy is evolving all of the time and after 18 months of being at the club I can feel a real identity forming throughout the club. From the pre-academy players aged 6-8, right through to the young pros at 19-20, I think we are in an excellent position and we have a great feeling throughout the academy.

The environment provided by the staff and through the facility here at Poolfoot Farm is a hub of excitement and I think any young aspiring player and his parents should feel proud to be a part of such an exciting venture. I’d also like to give a special mention to our young players who are continuing to represent themselves and the club with Northern Ireland. Dylan Boyle, Carl Johnston and Barry Baggley have performed at a really high level for both their club and country, with the national team reaching the second stage of their European Qualifiers. They will face Holland, Isreal and Czech Republic in February next year, and it goes without saying that we wish them all the best whilst away from the club. As this is the final programme before the festive period, I’d like to wish all our academy players, their parents and families a very Merry Christmas on behalf of all the staff within the academy. We look forward to continuing the good work done by all the academy into 2019.

Since the Syrian civil war officially began March 15, 2011, families have suffered under conflict with hundreds of thousands of people affected with torn the nation apart. Over the last 18 months the Salvation Army have helped families integrate into their local communities across the United Kingdom. A refugee: - has proven that they’d be at risk if returned to their home country - has had their claim for asylum accepted by the government - can now stay here either long term or indefinitely. Using the tool of sport, Fleetwood Town Community Trust work closely with Wyre Salvation Army in breaking down barriers by delivering physical activity and offering them opportunities to engage in community projects across Wyre and Fylde. The initiative aims to demonstrate how the local residents can support refugees whilst promoting the role of football and football fans in engaging with refugee communities. The group also attend daily English language lessons with the aim to improve their knowledge and understanding of the English culture. John Hartley, Community Sports Development Officer at Fleetwood Town’s Community Trust, said: “Our aim is to assist in integrating the families into the Fleetwood community through the power of sport. We have been delivering the programme now for two months, and in that very short amount of time, we can already we can see a noticaable difference in their confidence, English language and physical sporting ability.” Mousleh Aladrj, participant at the weekly session, ”We have done

Football, boxing and gym so far. I look forward to playing games with other groups.” Alex Foden, Refugee Resettlement Caseworker at Wyre Salvation Army, said: “The Community Trust have been working with our refugee families to promote their health and well-being with various physical activities and a range of day trips out. “I am looking forward to how the programme develops and how it can help shape the families lives to live a better quality of life. It has been very rewarding seeing them break down these barriers over these last 12 months and it has made me realise that refugees are not incompetent or unqualified to live their lives in the UK. “Although it has been traumatic and confusing adapting to a new way of life, they have worked hard to integrate into the community and as individuals they are talented, skilled and ambitious people who want to make a better future for themselves and their children. They have so much resilience it makes me feel inspired.”
