BARTON Fleetwood Town’s head coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against Doncaster...

G
ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match against Doncaster Rovers. Due to printing deadlines, I’m writing these notes prior to our away match at Bristol Rovers. Firstly I’d like to welcome everyone back to Highbury following what I hope was a very Merry Christmas for all our supporters. We are now in the middle of a very busy period for the team following on from Saturday’s game in Bristol, along with home matches against Doncaster today, Portsmouth on the 29th, and then a trip to Shrewsbury on New Year’s Day. We come into today’s game now six matches unbeaten in the league at home. For us it’s about getting points on the board, whether that’s at Highbury or away from Highbury. It’s
nice to see a good run of form come together at home, especially as we enter a busy festive period. I want to give a special mention to all the supporters who came to our match with Burton Albion. It wasn’t an easy game to play in, and I imagine it wasn’t easy to support in – especially behind the goal where all the wind, rain and sleet was blowing into! The whole team and staff were buzzing with the result, and hope to carry that momentum through the rest of the year. I’d like to welcome today’s opponents Doncaster Rovers to Highbury, as well as their manager Grant McCann, staff, supporters and directors. One of our best performances this season came at Doncaster, where we won 4-0 in a memorable away performance. We must be aware of the challenges that Doncaster pose –

they are a very good team in excellent form who deserve to be in and around the play-off picture at this moment. Thank you once again for your continued support, especially over this busy period of matches. Enjoy the game,

CAPTAIN MORGAN
loving life at town WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL
Defender Craig Morgan has had an incredible career and hopes to take all of his past experiences and continue to progress at Fleetwood Town.
N
ever a Dull Moment was football-loving Rod Stewart’s fourth album, released in 1972. It is a title which aptly sums up the professional career of Fleetwood Town club captain, Craig Morgan. A record of eight promotions and four relegations in sixteen seasons is surely unparalleled. “Yes, I’ve had some good times,’ the thirty-three year old defender told me. ‘I’ve enjoyed my career and want to finish it well. I definitely believe I can do something here. There is a great set of lads who are willing to work and listen. The gaffer and his staff have good ideas and there is a lot of positivity around the place.” Craig was born in North Wales, at St Asaph, in the summer of 1985 and was soon making a somewhat unlikely journey to watch regular league football. “My uncle, weirdly, was a Leeds United fan. There wasn’t much to do where we lived so he and I would get on the bus and travel to Leeds! Luckily, there were some good years, including Champions League football with the likes of Harry Kewell. These days, I look out for all the teams I’ve played for and have two lads who are starting in the game so I don’t follow a particular team anymore. “Centre midfield was as far forward as I got as a kid but, by twelve, I seemed to have found my position. I was settling down as a defender and I never looked back. I rated Tony Adams for his desire and, later, Rio Ferdinand, but I’ve got a lot of admiration for many centre halves from different periods.” Craig went down the road to Wrexham and has many fond memories of the club that gave him a start. “I owe a lot to that football club. It had so much going for it. They opened a really good training ground at Colliers Park and it was great to be around the likes of Joey Jones and Brian Flynn. I was in digs until I passed my driving test. The main shock was going
4
from having your own bedroom to sharing with three others. Two bunks in a box room! I liked being near home but I developed a lot of life skills when I was in digs.” Craig’s professional debut came at the age of sixteen, at home to Cambridge United in April 2002. Despite winning 5-0, Wrexham were relegated to the old Division Three before returning the following season. A personal highlight occurred in April 2005 when they beat Southend to win the Football League Trophy.
AFTER SIGNING A NEW CONTRACT UNTIL THE SUMMER OF 2021, IT WOULD BE A REALLY GOOD GOAL TO SET MY SIGHTS ON AND BE PROUD OF IF I CAN PROGRESS MY FOOTBALL AND STAY FIT.
“We played the game at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff which was a particular thrill. Experiences like that give you an appetite for more.” Unfortunately, it was not to be at Wrexham as well-documented problems affected the club. “It all fell apart in the space of a couple of years. Seven regulars left which didn’t help the demise. It was 2005 and I had the chance of going to Swansea or Milton Keynes. The agent I had at the time pushed me towards the MK Dons as they were an up and coming club. I met the chairman who was very passionate. “We still speak now and again. He’s been brilliant for the club. They deserve to be higher than League Two. I got my first Welsh cap at Milton Keynes, from John Toshack, after playing at all the age groups.”
Twenty-two more were to follow. Having made 64 appearances for Wrexham, Craig added another 51 at MK Dons before moving on, initially on loan but then permanently, to Peterborough United in November 2006. “I really enjoyed my time at Peterborough. Any time when you are winning matches is a good time. The club didn’t have a great infrastructure but there was a young and enthusiastic manager in Darren Ferguson. His ideas were great and we had a good team. There were ex-non-league players doing unbelievable things and experienced players like Dean Keates and Chris Westwood. “We bounced two divisions, from League Two to the Championship. In my second year I was given some captaincy experience. I was still only in my early twenties but the gaffer wanted someone for the future. I have always enjoyed my role as a skipper. On the pitch there are generally other leaders. A lot of it is off the pitch for me, making sure the lads are alright and everything is as it should be.” In July 2010, Craig moved to Preston North End, where he was joined by Ferguson. “It didn’t go great, to be fair. There were three or four managers in around fourteen months and I only stayed a couple of seasons. I went to Rotherham United. “It was a period similar to my experience at Peterborough and my time at London Road helped me settle. We kept a clean sheet and I got man of the match in an early game which was really good after a sticky patch at Preston. “We didn’t have much in the way of facilities at the time and got changed at the bottom of a golf club. There were two pitches and the youth team had one of them. The chairman has put in millions and facilities are getting better. Paul Warne, the manager, sent me a couple of pictures only the other day of what they have done at the

training ground. We bounced two leagues again so sitting in a freezing changing room didn’t matter in those circumstances. Winning is all-important.” Victory over Leyton Orient at Wembley saw the Millers promoted to the Championship in 2014. By now, Craig was captain. “It was a thrill to go to Wembley, win and lead the team up the steps afterwards. We were 2-0 down at half time and could have been three just before the break. Steve Evans can be quite a loud and outspoken manager but he delivered something unexpected at half time. He was very calm when we expected a blast. He spoke well and we came back to win it. Playing for my country at the Millennium was up there in my personal highlights but this was also a great day. “I played the Championship year at Rotherham then had a big decision to make and three offers to consider. Travelling across to Yorkshire for four years was taking its toll. My eldest had just started at Everton and I was taking him there three times a week. I felt I’d gone as far as I could with Rotherham. After going up twice, staying up the year after had been as big an achievement.”
On June 2015, Craig made the move to Lancashire outfit Wigan Athletic. “I definitely left at the right time and was excited about what Gaz Caldwell was describing at Wigan. It’s a massive football club. Everything was done for you and given to you in a way I hadn’t met at previous clubs. Although Dave Whelan had stepped aside, his grandson David Sharpe took over.
WE CAME OUT THE TRAPS AND THE FANS WERE BUZZING WITH OUR PERFORMANCE. THE ATMOSPHERE WAS BY FAR THE BEST I HAVE WITNESSED FOR A HOME GAME AT HIGHBURY. IT WAS UP THERE AS MY PROUDEST MOMENT.
“He was fantastic. We had a brilliant year, playing some wonderful football. I was in an excellent team. There were one or two Championship quality players such as Will Grigg and Michael Jacobs. We scored 82 goals and set an incredibly high standard. We

went back up as champions but, if I’m honest, I don’t think we were quite ready for the Championship and came straight back down.” Promotion had been secured at Blackpool, with a 4-0 victory. “We should have been four down that day but turned it on in the second half, as we often did. We got taken away afterwards and as an older player I treasure times like this all the more.” All this experience is surely leading to management? “I’m not sure what there is to come. I’ll sit down and think about the next stage one day!” Family commitments have become increasingly important to the Welshman. With sons already taking up the game, would he recommend the life of a professional footballer to them? “There are stresses such as relegation but that’s the same in all jobs. It’s a life which is not always fair on your family, such as at Christmas. “At around the age of 27, my boy had had three primary schools. So, we decided to settle. Being a footballer is what everyone wants to do, though, isn’t it?!”

rant McCann was announced as Doncaster Rovers manager in June 2018, ahead of the 2018/19 Sky Bet League One season. The former midfielder started his playing career with multiple loans from West Ham United before moving to Cheltenham Town in 2003. Whilst at the Gloucestershire outfit, he scored 31 in 158 appearances. Barnsley was his next move, after a short loan spell. On his debut, he managed to score a 92nd minute winner over Ipswich Town. The 38 year-old then moved to Scunthorpe United in January 2008 and made over 100 appearances for the club, before making the move to Peterborough United in 2010, where he scored 29 goals in five years. McCann also represented Northern Ireland U21 and the first team between 2000 and 2012.
ohn Marquis moved to Doncaster Rovers in June 2016, and was given the number nine shirt ahead of the 2016/17 season. The forward progressed through the ranks in Millwall’s academy before breaking into the first team, making a total of 52 appearances. Marquis showed his ability to score goals when given a chance in 2011 as he scored once against Preston North End then secured a brace against Scunthorpe United in the next game. Injuries halted his career whilst at the southern club, and multiple loan moves followed, going to clubs like Northampton Town, Cheltenham Town and Gillingham. Since joining Doncaster, the 26 year-old has become a fans favourite and has achieved some accolades, including the 2016/17 Sky Bet League Two Player of the Season.

ACADEMY WITH MIKE HALL
FOUNDATION PHASE LEAD COACH
2018 has been a great year for our foundation phase at Fleetwood Town, and this is one area that we are really excited about for the future of this football club. My job role is to have an overview of the foundation phase (5-12 year-olds) and make sure that what we are delivering is up to a high standard for the children that come through the door. When I look back at the year, especially the start of the 2018/19 season, the boys have made a great start to the campaign. All of the success we have had in games and with training sessions is a result of the coaches hard work and dedication, and that is something we always look at from our point of view. Having being challenged at the start of the season to create a positive learning environment for the boys, the players we have are feeling comfortable and more confident when it comes to trying new skills. Creating that environment requires a ‘buy in’ from parents and guardians of the players, and whilst our Head of Education, Welfare and Safeguarding, Ben Lavelle has provided several workshops with a psychological focus in terms of building resilience, this has helped the boys to understand that as coaching staff, we will of course accept mistakes when the occur, as we are conscious that they are essentially young children and
not adults, plus we want our players to express themselves on and off the field of play. Our focus as coaches is to see how the boys respond to setbacks, which we feel is becoming an ever more important part of not just football, but also as part of their wider social development. One of the key values of our academy, which is to develop good people first and foremost, is providing transferable skills for whatever path they take in football or beyond. Football is a massive part of everybody’s day to day life, but we also need to consider what happens after football and if we can do that as coaches, we know our children will have the best skills available to them in the real world. For the New Year, we will continue to challenge the players to master the ball from a technical level, also highlighting aspects such as staying on the ball when under pressure, and being positive and proactive both in and out of possession, which will help consolidate the boys’ learning of the club and academy playing philosophy.

COMMUNITYTRUST FTFC COMMUNITY TRUST HAVE JOINED UP WITH THE CO-OP LOCAL COMMUNITY FUND IN ORDER TO BUILD STRONGER TIES TO THE LOCAL AREA.
Now it is your chance to support the Fleetwood Town Community Trust in building a healthier and stronger community across the Wyre and Fylde area. The Co-op Local Community Fund helps to support local projects that our members take part in and care about, and since its launch in 2017, Co-op members have raised £39 million pounds for over 12,000 local causes. We’re delighted that we, Fleetwood Town Community Trust, will now be able to access this funding opportunity through the Co-op scheme. With this campaign, every time Co-op members shop, 1% of what you spend on Co-op branded products and services helps fund community projects such as Health and Well-being, Disability inclusion, Sport & Physical Activity and much more. Signing up with this programme doesn’t just help us, it also helps the young children and adults that we work with on a daily basis. This could include new equipment, staffing and the different ways we can get out and about to our audience. Members can shop at any Co-op Group stores across the UK to raise money for our cause and you can support this campaign by signing into a membership account or by calling the membership helpline on 0800 023 4708. Our cause will be available for members to select until November 2019 and we can’t wait to make more of a difference with our work in the community.
