BARTON Fleetwood Town’s head coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against Wimbledon...
0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm
G
ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie with AFC Wimbledon. We’ve had four matches since I last wrote my pre-Christmas programme notes. The highlight for me over the festive period was the victory over Doncaster Rovers on Boxing Day, and the first 50 minutes against Portsmouth last Saturday. I’m really pleased with our home form, and we also stopped the losing run away from Highbury on Tuesday at Shrewsbury with a hard-fought 0-0 draw. No team enjoys playing at our stadium with the run that we are on, and hopefully we can continue that today. Today’s game sees us take a break from league action, and presents the team with an opportunity to make history by reaching the
fourth round for the first time. We’ve shown our qualities by coming through two tricky away ties at Alfreton and Guiseley, and we must show that again as we face a difficult and strong opponent in AFC Wimbledon. They have recently changed their manager, with Wally Downes coming into the job. I know Wally from my time at QPR, and he will have his team well drilled and we know that they will be coming here with the same intention as us – to progress to the next round. The FA Cup is the lifeblood for teams are our level, and we know that we will have to be on our mantle to get through the tie. I’d finally like to welcome Wally, his staff, players, directors and the supporters of AFC Wimbledon to Highbury for today’s match. We

faced them on the first day of the season and came unstuck, obviously they have had a change of manager since then, but the qualities that they have still remain. We are fully aware of how tough today’s game will be, but know if we play to our maximum, we have a great chance of progressing in the competition. Enjoy today’s game.

HILL READY FOR FA CUP FIXTURE WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL
First team coach Clint Hill has had many encounters with the Emirates FA Cup throughout his career and looks back at those memories.
F
leetwood’s first team coach, Clint Hill, has been involved in thirty-eight FA Cup games through his career. One of the most memorable was in the early days when he was part of the Tranmere Rovers team who heaped humiliation on illustrious neighbours Everton in the Fourth Round back in January 2001. “I was only a young kid in a young team. We had all come through the system. We were definitely a cup team that season and to get the chance to go to Goodison Park to play against Everton was brilliant. “We wanted to put on a good performance but to leave with a 3-0 win and to play like that was unbelievable. Steve Yates scored a couple and Jason Koumas scored the other. I think they call it St Yates Day now on Merseyside! “As a Liverpool lad, it was a fabulous occasion for me and we got a standing ovation from the Everton fans when we came off at the end. That was class. I jumped on the train home and that was it! “I think my first ever goal for Tranmere was in the FA Cup, at Hereford three years before the Everton game. We won 3-0. Some of the places I went to in the competition with Tranmere were amazing. Playing against Alan Shearer at Newcastle is the sort of stuff dreams are made of. We drew at Southampton in 2001. “A year later we were at Tottenham, losing 4-0 against the likes of Teddy Sheringham and Les Ferdinand. “They were great experiences for a young lad like me.” Of the many great players that he has marked in his career, who did he rate the highest? “For me, Luis Suarez is everything you want as a player and as a teammate. He works hard and plays for the team. He can do things other players cannot do. He is a
4
proper, proper player. He gave me a torrid time when I was at QPR.” As a Liverpool supporter, playing at Anfield must have been special. “I was like a tourist! I was taking loads of pictures of the stadium and had to touch the sign. Mum and dad were there, as were the family. They saw me achieve a dream. “When I watched Liverpool growing up, Dad told me to keep an eye on Alan Hansen. ‘What a player,’ he would say. Then there were the Barnes and Fowlers of this world. I remember running around the back garden by myself, scoring against the fence.
I THINK MY FIRST EVER GOAL FOR TRANMERE WAS IN THE FA CUP. SOME OF THE PLACES I WENT TO IN THE COMPETITION WERE AMAZING. PLAYING AGAINST ALAN SHEARER IS THE STUFF DREAMS ARE MADE OF.
“In those games I was either Jason McAteer or Alan Stubbs from the Bolton team of the early nineties. That kind of memory sticks in my head. Then I’d be in the park playing in a World Cup. I’d be Brazil one day, England another. I was a striker and a half decent player back then! I’d take people on and score loads of free kicks then sadly something went wrong and I finished up at the back!” What other memories stand out for the forty year-old? “Winning the Championship in 2011 with QPR was my first major title and then to go back to Wembley and skipper the side in the Championship play-offs three years later kind of put some demons to rest. I’d been sent off there in the 2000 League Cup Final
when Tranmere played Leicester City. Joe (Joey Barton) was in that play-off winning team with me. “There was a really good team spirit until things got broken up. We met up again at Rangers.” And now, the two are alongside each other in the technical area at Fleetwood. “I was quite surprised when Joe came calling. Although we saw a lot of each other we weren’t what I would call best, best mates who spoke every day. To get that kind of phone call, an invite to chat over coffee, for him to present this and come on board was an honour. There was no chance I would turn it down. Since I turned thirty, I had coaching in mind. I did my badges and spots of coaching here and there. “I was lucky that my career had prolonged for a few years but the timing was definitely right. My body was getting me through certain amounts of games and my last club, Carlisle, were brilliant with me. “The manager, Keith Curle, got me 42 games in that final year and it was exactly how I wanted to finish. This situation presented itself and it was a good time to give up playing. “Every experienced player I talked to over my last three or four years told me to play as long as I could. It was great advice but coaching was something I wanted to do.” How has the transition into coaching been so far for the forty year-old? “You can prepare as much as you can but until you actually start training sessions and match days you don’t know. It is a hell of a change and a shock to the system. It is a challenge and there are undoubtedly frustrations but I’ve had that for twentyone years and I still need that uncertainty, the mixture of winning and recovering from setbacks. It keeps me alive. I need that carnage, if you like.
BIO NAME: Clinton Scott Hill AGE: 40 BIRTHDAY: 19/10/1978 POSITION: Defender PLAYING CAREER: Tranmere Rovers (97-02) Oldham Athletic (02-03) Stoke City (03-08) Crystal Palace (07-08 L, 08-10) Queens Park Rangers (10-16) Nottingham Forest (11 L) Rangers (16-17) Carlisle United (17-18) COACHING CAREER: Fleetwood Town (18-Present)
“From the age of sixteen you are institutionalised and that can be for a long time if you play beyond thirty. It’s a weird place to be. I was lucky to fit into something straightaway. It involves long hours but I’m enjoying every moment. Fleetwood’s a great club and we need to continue making steps forward.” There must be much to learn from the many managers he has come across. Which have been particularly influential? “I was with Harry Redknapp at QPR. He came across totally differently on ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’, much more relaxed. To be fair, he was my manager in difficult times. There was a lot wrong behind the scenes and in the dressing room. He’s had a great career but fell a little bit out of love with the game. He is a great guy, though, and looked after me. “‘Knocker’ Warnock saved my career. I was injured at Stoke for pretty much four years but he took a chance on me and signed me at Crystal Palace. He resurrected my career and I played 127 games there. He treated me like a grown up and if I wanted time to go north to see the family he would give me time.
“What you see is what you get with Neil Warnock. If you give him a hundred per cent every single day he will look after you. That’s all you need as a player. “I must also mention John Aldridge who gave me a chance at Tranmere when I was a bit of a rascal. I had had six or seven sendings off in a couple of years. He stuck by me and
I WAS LIKE A TOURIST AT ANFIELD! I WAS TAKING LOADS OF PICTURES OF THE STADIUM AND HAD TO TOUCH THE SIGN. MY FAMILY SAW ME ACHIEVE A DREAM BY PLAYING AGAINST LIVERPOOL.
probably saw a bit of the rough diamond that he had in himself. It kept me going at a difficult time.” Clint went back to school recently, completing a Professional Studies in Football Management course at the University of Liverpool.
Fleetwood Town v AFC Wimbledon
“The qualification was an attempt to get out of my comfort zone. Sitting in front of the fire just isn’t me. I’ve not done any academic studying for twenty years. It was an intense year with master classes and assignments that had to be in every month. Then there was a final week in London and a 4000 word assignment to end with. Passing was a bonus. I loved every minute and learned a lot from other managers on it. “Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was there as were John Coleman and Jimmy Bell from Accrington. Fabrice Muamba was another and there were directors of football and academy directors.” Given the chance to play one more game at any previous club, which would he choose? “Oh, that’s a difficult one! QPR was a special place but to play for Rangers at Ibrox once again would be brilliant. It’s an iconic venue and there’s such a thrill walking into the stadium, not just for the Celtic games but all of them. You are part of a proper institution and you have to respect it. It was a real honour for me. We played Red Bull Leipzig in a pre-season friendly one year and took ten thousand fans! That’s proper support!”

The Gaffer
The Danger Man
ally Downes was appointed as the new AFC Wimbledon first team manager on the 4th December 2018, after former manager Neal Ardley left the club. Downes previously spent two years managing Brentford, but he has also spent time coaching in the Championship and the Premier League at Reading, Crystal Palace and West Ham. Prior to the 2017/18 season in the Indian Super League, Downes joined Steve Coppell at Jamshedpur, before moving on to coach other Indian clubs such as Kerala Blasters, and ATK. The 57-year-old played at Wimbledon for nine years, where he made over 200 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals from midfield. He is often cited as being the main instigator of the Crazy Gang spirit of the club.
oe Pigott, began his footballing career at Charlton Athletic in 2012, where he spent four years at the club. First team football was tough to come by for the now 25-yearold, so loan spells at Gillingham, Newport and Southend followed. After time out on loan, Cambridge United came calling and the youngster scored his first goal for the club in their 1-0 win away at Shrewsbury in the EFL Trophy. Piggot signed for the Dons in January 2018, and the forward scored four minutes into his debut in their 2-0 home win over Blackpool, having only being subbed on in the 73rd minute. He has scored 12 goals for AFC Wimbledon in just under 12 months, with his first of this season coming against Fleetwood on the opening day win at Highbury.

ACADEMY WITH SIMON WILES UNDER 18s COACH
It has been a challenging start to the season for the under 18s, but what we have done as a group is work very hard on the training ground. That is all I can ask from the group of players we have. I think if you look back at the results and the performances we had earlier in the season, we had a dip in form where we went on a three game losing streak. That was a challenge for the players, and also myself in this new role I took on, and to ask the lads to bounce back is hard but as I always say, we are always learning and that moment is something I will look back upon. The lads reacted well to those three defeats and won their next game. They went on a really good run of form after taht and that has seen results improve, and the same with their performance. Not only that, individual performances have improved and that has ultimately seen some of our lads train with the first team. Ryan Rydel and James Hill have recently been with the first team and that is a testament to their commitment and their willingness to listen and learn day in day out. Ryan has really kicked on this year and we’ve been him grow not just as a player, but also as a person and that’s always great to see. We hope he continues to impress us and the first teach coaching staff.
James Hill is someone we are really excited about, and for us we need to keep seeing forward steps in terms of development. He rightly deserved to be in and around the first team squad, and as a young player, these are the experiences that you need because it’s good having the opportunity, but you want to stay there, and not just be there for one week. Players like Dylan Boyle and Jay Matete have also been in and around the first team training squad on a home match day and again for those players, what a huge moment. They need to use those experiences to push themselves forwards in terms of what they want out of their career. The first team staff have been fantastic with the lads, but the lads know there’s still a long way to go. As a group, we have had a short break over the Christmas holidays, but it is back to business today against Shrewsbury. I know the players will have looked after themselves, and I know we are all ready to come back and kick on for the rest of the season.

COMMUNITYTRUST COMMUNITY TRUST CEO MATT HILTON LOOKS BACK OVER THEIR SUCCESSES IN 2018...
Over the past 12 months we have continued to grow, whilst building on a solid foundation that first started in May 2012. Year on year, we continue to surpass our targets and 2018 has been another fantastic year for the charity. Fleetwood Town Community Trust has expanded at a phenomenal rate and we now work in four key themed areas: Sports Participation, Education, Health & Wellbeing and Social Inclusion. Football and in particular, Fleetwood Town Football Club, has the ability to engage people, improve community cohesion and raise the hopes and aspirations of the people across Wyre and surrounding areas. As a Trust, we are committed to ensuring that we respond to local needs whilst working strategically in line with regional and national agendas. The charity raised in excess of £680,000 in 2018 to deliver around 30 projects to over 13,000 local people, this is something we are all extremely proud of. Our thriving partnerships play a huge part in allowing us to inspire the local community through our charitable work. I would like to thank all of our partner schools, businesses and groups who engage with us every year. We have made a difference to local people, improved participation rates in sport and exercise, delivered projects around health and inclusion as well as an update on our facility plans. As we enter our seventh year we have some very exciting plans for a two million pounds Community Sports Hub facility. The Sports Hub plans see a great mix of facilities for all sectors of the general public to enjoy. We believe that by creating better facilities and having a fit for purpose base for the charity, we can deliver even more projects in our community and achieve amazing outcomes that will change local people’s lives.
We plan to be here for the long term and this facility will help us achieve our ambition of becoming the leading community engagement charity in the borough. The aims of the sports hub are to increase participation in sport, improve health and exercise levels and provide more opportunities for disabled people to access vital sport and education activities. The hub will also host many projects that develop skills for people out of work, create new job opportunities, inspire people to become volunteers for local sports organisations, sports clubs and charities, and provide a pathway for gifted and talented young people into elite sport across a number of different fields. As a Trust, are looking forward to another year of growth in 2019 which is set to be our most successful and exciting year to date. There’s so much to look forward to with the new centre, new initiatives and much more. Stay tuned across all platforms of social media as you don’t want to miss anything!
