BARTON Fleetwood Town’s head coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against Oxford...
0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm
G
ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Oxford United. I’d like to extend that welcome to Karl Robinson, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the journey to the Fylde coast from Oxford today. Oxford are a good footballing side who want to play the game in the right way. I have special memories of the game earlier in the season as it was my first win in management, and I know if we can reach our levels of performance today, we have an excellent chance of coming away same outcome. Since our last home game against AFC Wimbledon in the league, we’ve had a few changes to our squad with the transfer
window now open. Kyle Dempsey has joined Peterborough on loan until the end of the season, with Chris Long moving to Blackpool. I’d personally like to wish Kyle all the best whilst down at Peterborough. I understand Kyle played a lot of football before I came to the club, and for him to continue his development, he needs to be playing and not sat on the bench. I’d also like to wish Chris all the best for the future, and it’s disappointing that things didn’t work out for him here. We were delighted to extend the loan deal of Lewie Coyle until the end of the season. Lewie has been fantastic since I came in, and has become a key part of our defence. We’ve also welcomed Ashley Nadesan back into the squad following his loan spell at Carlisle United.
Fleetwood Town v Oxford United
Having him back is like having a new signing, and he’s now back with us after a successful time at Carlisle and is ready to fight for a first team jersey. It’s been great to see both him and Jack Sowerby impress whilst on loan, and when Jack returns, he’ll be in the same boat as Nadders in terms of coming back and being part of our first team plans. Enjoy today’s game.

COYLE RARING TO GO
AGAIN FOR TOWN WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL
Defender Lewie Coyle recently extended his loan until the end of the season and hopes to keep his standard of play he’s put in so far at the club.
T
he announcement that Lewie Coyle will be remaining at Fleetwood for the rest of the season has provided a healthy dose of New Year cheer for the Cod Army who, nine months ago, were saying goodbye to the popular full back at the end of last season! “Things change very quickly in football. I went back to Leeds United in the summer and spent a couple of days there. It became apparent pretty quickly that I wasn’t in the club’s plans. That was great for me in one sense because I knew where I stood from day one. “I wasn’t having to go through a preseason of six weeks only to be then told that I wasn’t needed. I jumped at the chance of being back with Fleetwood and part of, hopefully, what will be a successful season.” Lewie’s debut for Fleetwood was back in August 2017, against Rotherham United. Since then, he has pulled on the number two shirt 77 times, mainly at right back but occasionally on the left side of defence. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time here last year. I was given every opportunity to develop as a player. When the gaffer names a team I will always play to the best of my ability wherever I am and give it one hundred per cent. I don’t believe that anyone has a set position in football. Playing left back is another string to my bow. “Over the last eighteen months I’ve become a completely different player. My game has developed in leaps and bounds and I’m grateful to all three managers for helping me to do that. I think that progress is evident in the number of games that I’ve played. It’s been good to achieve that level of performance which earns me the right to play.” Lewie’s never-say-die attitude has endeared him to the fans. It is something that he readily admits has come from his
4
family and it is clear listening to Lewie that they are a tightly-knit unit. “We are normal, hard-working people who believe that you only get out in life what you put in. Mum and Dad have supported me and my brothers from day one. There have been countless hours driving me up and down the motorway to training at Leeds and to matches. At the minute all the sacrifices made have paid off and I take huge inspiration from what my parents have done for me all the way back to childhood. It’s created a pathway for me to go on and be successful achieving my dream of being a professional footballer.
I JUMPED AT THE CHANCE OF BEING BACK WITH FLEETWOOD AND PART OF, HOPEFULLY WHAT WILL STILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON. I’VE BEEN GIVEN EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP AS A PLAYER WHILST HERE AT FLEETWOOD.
“My dad gets to games regularly, when he can. That’s unfortunate on Mum who has to then look after the stall but it was really nice to see her at the Boxing Day game. As well as Dad, there are a handful of others who support me regularly, wherever I am, and I appreciate that.” Since arriving, Lewie has forged good friendships with the likes of Alex Cairns and Ashley Eastham. All go back similar periods at Fleetwood. “They are a great set of lads here and made it very easy for me to settle in from the start. Knowing Cairnsy before coming sort of gave me a head start. Being such good pals with these guys bodes well going into fixtures because we have such a good
understanding of each other and know our characters and approaches well. I know I’ve got good lads around me.” I asked the twenty-three year old which player from the squad he would choose to save his life by winning a hole of golf, knowing that the game is popular with them. “Oh, that’s a good question! Great question! Demps is a good player and Cairnsy tries hard. No disrespect to them but I’d have to go for Bolg! I’ve been on a golfing holiday with Alex and Cian so know their games well. Yes, it would have to be Bolg.” With a brother golfing professionally, was there ever a temptation for Lewie to follow that dream? “No, never! I always enjoy golf and am steady away but there was never a time when I thought I could crack the game. I’ll leave that to Joe!” Uwe Rosler brought Lewie to the club in 2017 and has played a big part in the full back’s career. “Most definitely. I will always be grateful for the leg-up that Uwe and Rob Kelly gave me at Leeds United. “They selected me for the reserves against Manchester United at Leeds Thorp Arch training ground. Shortly after that I was stepping up to first team training with a new contract. Granted it was Steve Evans who gave me my first team debut but I will always owe Uwe a lot and hold his contribution dear in my mind. I wish him every success in the future. “With them here when I started at Fleetwood, it gave me that little bit of a help. Uwe and Rob knew what I was about and vice versa. It made perfect sense for me to join last season and its been a really good fit ever since. Even when John Sheridan came in I had massive respect for him. He helped me a lot and did an incredible job keeping us in the division.
PLAYER BIO NAME: Lewie Jacob Coyle AGE: 23 BIRTHDAY: 15/10/1995 POSITION: Defender PREVIOUS CLUBS: Leeds United (14-Present) Harrogate Town (14 L) Fleetwood Town (17-Present L) Did You Know? Since joining Fleetwood Town on loan in July 2017, he has won the Players’ Player of the Year award, as well as the Junior Cod Army Player of the Year award. Lewie has since rejoined the club on loan this season, with the club opting to extend that deal until the end of the season.
“The current regime has been second to none in the support they’ve given me. I genuinely can’t fault any of them.” Did it seem like a new start having to prove yourself to a new management team? “I’ll be brutally honest, when the situation at Leeds became clear I did wonder to myself whether I should strive to play at a higher level. I’ve tasted Championship football with Leeds and to get more chances would have been great. “Football’s a funny old game, though, and that opportunity didn’t present itself for one reason or another. Saying that, I was delighted when Fleetwood showed interest in me again. This club means a lot to me. Ultimately, I want to play at the next level and achieve my ambitions. I’m not one to stand still. I want to kick on and, hopefully, I can play a part here in a season to remember.” There have been some memorable days and evenings to remember already this season, not least the 5-0 win at Scunthorpe United on 22nd August. “Those are the sort of occasions you are in football for. I remember the week leading up to that game. We all had this feeling that
we were moments away from doing that to a side. When this team clicks we can dominate teams. Doncaster Rovers was another example. To beat a top team like that 7-0 over two games, well, not many teams are going to do that.
WHEN THE GAFFER NAMES A TEAM I WILL ALWAYS PLAY TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY WHEREVER I AM AND GIVE IT ONE HUNDRED PER CENT. IT’S GOOD TO ACHIEVE A LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE WHICH ALLOWS ME TO PLAY.
“Sunderland was special because I’d never been to the Stadium of Light with Leeds. You shouldn’t need much motivation for games like that! “That was another day when we showed our calibre as a side. Although the recent result against Portsmouth didn’t go our way, by and large we have performed well against the bigger teams.”
Fleetwood Town v Oxford United
Another match that will stay long in the memory is Town’s first win over Blackpool. “That was a great day because it’s always nice to be part of a little bit of history and after Blackpool’s late win last season I was desperate to put it right for our fans.” In Clint Hill, Lewie has the support and advice of a defender with a hugely successful career behind him. This must be a big help? “The knowledge around us is second to none. I’m always keen to learn and Hilly is teaching me a lot. “He’s had a fantastic career, the sort us lads in the back four dream of, and has been spot on with me. We spend a lot of time oneon-one and with the back line and Cairnsy. ‘Slots’ comes to mind with Hilly. It is a tactical, technical term which we all understand now! A little code word, if you like! Little things like that are making a difference to my game.” Might a goal be on the New Year resolution list?! “I was hoping you weren’t going to mention that, to be fair! I’m not a big one for making resolutions but I suppose it would be a good choice! I’ve been close on many occasions, very close at times! It’ll happen one day!”

The Gaffer
The Danger Man
arl Robinson was appointed manager of Oxford United in March 2018, and has taken charge of 48 games since arriving at the Kassam Stadium, with a 33.3% win ratio. The 38-year old started off his managerial at Milton Keynes Dons in 2010, where achieved promotion to the Championship for the first time in the club’s history in the 2013/14 season, finishing as runners-up. In the same season, Robinson masterminded MK Dons’ greatest victory, a 4-0 EFL Cup win over Manchester United in August 2014. The Liverpool-born manager then moved to Charlton Athletic in November 2016, and spent 17 months there before joining Oxford. Since joining The U’s, Robinson has faced Fleetwood twice, losing on both occasions in Oxfordshire.
ames Henry has featured in 25 league games this season, scoring eight goals for the U’s in that time, with his latest coming in a 2-0 win over Blackpool. Henry signing his first professional contract at Reading in June 2006, and was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest in 2007. He has since had spells at Bournemouth, Norwich and Millwall before signing for the Lions on a permanent deal in 2010. After featuring in over 100 games over a four year stint at the Den, Wolves came calling and this saw him reunited with manager Kenny Jackett. He won the League One title in the 2013/14 season. The 29-year-old joined Oxford in July 2017, and has made 63 appearances in 18 months, scoring 18 goals in the league.

ACADEMY WITH RYAN SHORROCK
HEAD OF ACADEMY PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
The academy have had a really good first half to the season, and for me it has been a very busy one being the Head of Academy Performances Analysis. This role means that I am in charge of all the teams from our Under 9s to our Under 23s. I have been with the first team on a number of occasions, and this has given me an insight into my next step forward in the work place. With myself and the rest of the club’s analysis department, we are always looking to support the learning of all of our players. This will give the teams, players and coaches a better understanding of the previous match – where they will look to learn from, or the upcoming match – preparation. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail comes to mind! The club have always supported the department and always make sure that we have access to the leading industry software and equipment. We currently use a platform called ‘Hudl’ to share all footage with players, who will interact remotely with their coaches about the positives and the negatives in their performance. This allows our coaches to provide comments to their players, but also vice versa with the players being able to comment and give their thoughts
This season has seen the club invest in a drone, and this really has taken our analysis to the next level. The footage that we can gain with the drone is incredible and it gives myself and the coaches a different angle that otherwise would be unavailable. One programme that I enjoy using is ‘Coach Paint’ – you might have seen this used on Match of the Day and Sky Sports. This professional touch program helps us to show players exactly what we want from them at a specific moment during a game. It will allow us to interact with the players more, allowing the players to draw over the clips to give their input into the process. As a department, we are very lucky to have a Chairman who has backed us from day one and this just shows that he believes in the system. I honestly believe that the analysis provision available to the club, the staff and the players is truly innovating, and one that is engaging for every person that uses our programme on and off the site.

COMMUNITYTRUST COMMUNITY TRUST PE AND SCHOOL SPORTS ACTIVATOR JAKE ANDERTON ON HIS WORK WITH IN FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT CENTRES...
Fleetwood Town Community Trust currently have over 450 children signed up to our Football Development pathway centres across the Fylde Coast. These sessions are aimed at boys and girls aged between 3-8 yearsold and are designed to help develop the children’s football skills, whilst also improving their social skills by meeting new friends outside of the school environment. We feel this also help build a child’s confidence, and that really is evident throughout the programme that we run. The purpose of the development centres is to allow different potential pathways for children during their football careers. We, Fleetwood Town Community Trust, have strong links to a number of grassroots football clubs as well as Fleetwood Town Football Club. Children who attend the sessions have a number of different potential opportunities available to them with the help of the development pathway, and we always look to help each individual when they come through our door. One potential route is playing for local grassroots club. This allows children the chance to be able to train and play games against other local clubs, and also play with their friends at the weekends.
Over the last two years, the Under 7s Junior football teams have really progressed and that’s great to see. This team has been created from boys and girls moving on from the development centres, and it’s estimated over 120 children have moved on to teams within grassroots clubs that include Fleetwood Town Juniors, Thornton-Cleveleys football club and many others. The development pathway can also give young footballers the chance to attend Fleetwood Town football club’s pre academy or academy set up. This allows young players the chance to be able to train and play within a professional set up at Poolfoot Farm. Over the last two years, over 20 boys have made the pathway from the development centres into the Fleetwood Town Academy and currently 15 of those are still involved to this day. Development football sessions run each week at Fleetwood Town’s training ground, Poolfoot Farm, and also at Cardinal Allen High School in Fleetwood. For more information on the times and dates, please contact Jake Anderton via email at jake.anderton@fleetwoodtownfc.com or via the phone on 07595 732214. We look forward to seeing down at one of our sessions in the near future.
