BARTON Fleetwood Town’s head coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against Scunthorpe...

0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm

G

ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Scunthorpe United. We come into today’s game on the back of an excellent team performance at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night, which saw us come away with a deserved three points. We have been working hard on the training ground with a new structure, and the early signs are good. I must credit also to the 40 travelling fans who were at the match – it’s a huge effort to make the long journey on a Tuesday night, and myself, the staff and players were grateful for the support. It was nice to see the players show their appreciation by giving away their shirts at the end of the

match – although I was surprised they took them off given how cold it was! We now have two home games on the bounce, and it’s important we get back rolling at Highbury. We’re sewing some good seeds into the team at the moment, and we feel like these will stand us in good stead in the future. I’ve spoken before about being patient and to trust the hard work which is taking place, and we feel that if we keep up the way that we are going, we will continue to move forward and progress. Onto today’s opponents, Scunthorpe. I’d like to welcome Stuart McCall, his staff, as well as the players and directors to Highbury today. We were outstanding when we played them at

Fleetwood Town v Scunthorpe United

Glanford Park earlier in the season, where we ran out 5-0 winners. We’re aware that they are now a different team, with a different manager, and they are on a great run of form so they must be respected and we will need to be right on our game to get a result today. Enjoy today’s game.

madden sets his

sights again WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Paddy Madden is currently holding an EFL record for Town, having scored the most goals in all competitions in a season since the club were promoted from non-league in 2012.

H

e knows his way to goal, was Joey Barton’s succinct summary when I told him who I was waiting to chat with. The figures undeniably back this up. After making his debut a year ago, Paddy reached his fiftieth game for Fleetwood in the home draw with Oxford United. His goal in the game was the Irishman’s twenty-first for the club and, at the time of writing, he has the best goal per game ratio of any Fleetwood striker in the EFL. “I wasn’t aware of reaching the fifty games but it’s not a bad rate of games. I’ve also had a couple of niggling injuries which have kept me out of matches. Otherwise, I might have got there quicker.” With Scunthorpe United the visitors this afternoon, the 28 year-old will be meeting the club where he spent four years, the longest period of his career so far. “Every club I’ve played for will hold a special place in my heart. I had some great years at Scunthorpe and getting into their top ten all-time EFL scorers was a great achievement for me. “I will always have a good relationship with the Chairman, Peter Swann, who doesn’t get the credit he deserves for the good things he does up there. I had some great team mates around me but, towards the end, I felt that a fresh start was needed. “I was delighted with the decision to sign for Fleetwood Town. It has recharged my batteries. I’ve done exactly what I said I would do which is to score goals.” Fleetwood’s 5-0 win at Glandford Park in August was their biggest winning margin in their league history. Paddy failed to hit the net that time but played his part in a dominant attacking performance. “You won’t see many teams go to Scunthorpe and win 5-0, that’s for sure. I was there for years but never saw a scoreline like that. Yes, I was a little bit shocked but

4

we played very well that night and really put it on them. It was probably coincidental but in the week before the game we were saying that someone was going to get a good hiding from us and so it happened. We looked very sharp and it was unlucky for Scunthorpe on the night.” I put it to Paddy that some of the best performances this season have been against stronger teams.

YOU WON’T SEE MANY TEAMS GO TO SCUNTHORPE AND WIN 5-0! I WAS THERE FOR YEARS BUT NEVER SAW A SCORLINE LIKE THAT. IT WAS PROBABLY COINCIDENTAL BUT IN THE WEEK BEFORE THE GAME, WE WERE SAYING THAT SOMEONE WAS GOING TO GET A GOOD HIDING FROM US.

“Yes. Against the top sides you need that much more organization and work rate. We need to approach every game in the same way and we will start seeing the rewards. No one has any right to beat anyone else on the day and that’s the beauty of League One.” Sunderland away was another case in point. “Definitely, and we could have done better than a draw. It was my first game at the Stadium of Light and great to score but I obviously missed a penalty. Our shape off the ball was brilliant that day. We filled in the slots like the gaffer wanted us to and has been working on. It’s what you see from all the top Premier League teams. At the start of the season, we had a feel-good factor away. No one was gonna beat us. “Everyone wanted to get one over on Blackpool, particularly after last season’s disappointment, and it was great for the Chairman as well. He works wonders here

and we enjoyed giving him the bragging rights. Let’s hope he keeps them after the next game as well! “I missed Leicester last year so it was nice to tick off their stadium in the Carabao Cup this season. The result wasn’t what we wanted but it is always to be expected against a Premier League team. You try your best. If Ghezzal hadn’t scored one of the best goals you’ve seen it might have been a different game. It knocked the stuffing out of us a bit.” The goal at Rochdale last weekend now means twenty two goals in fifty-one games, a good return by any standards. “I always try to be alive in the box. My mindset is always,’ I want to score’ and if I can’t who can I help in the team to score? I’ve had a lot of assists in my time.’ The goals have been going in with more regularity this year after six in twenty games last season. “I went on a similar type of spell for Scunthorpe when I signed for them and they were in League Two. I remember scoring five times between the January and the end of the season after which I scored regularly. You have to get to know your surroundings, the people you are working for and your team mates. Once I settle in, I tend to push on.” The combination with Ched Evans has been a growing threat for opposition defences this season. “Ched is the focal point down the middle, a physical presence holding up the ball and defenders don’t like that. “He compliments me very well and I compliment him. I cover more ground but that’s how I like to play, picking up the seconds. A lot of my goals through my career have come from running off defenders and picking up balls. “I just like to be on the field and involved.

PLAYER BIO NAME: Patrick Madden AGE: 28 BIRTHDAY: 04/03/1990 POSITION: Forward PREVIOUS CLUBS: Bohemians (08-11) Shelbourne (09 L) Carlisle United (11-13) Yeovil Town (12-13 L, 13-14) Scunthorpe United (14-18) Fleetwood Town (18-Present) Did You Know? Paddy Madden is breaking records at Town as his 16 goals in all competitions this season is the most of any Fleetwood player in a single campaign since the club were promoted from non-league!

I’m at my weakest when I’m static so that’s why I’d rather not be in the Ched role. With Ash and Wes in great form we have plenty of threat going forward.” An early header in pre-season against Salford followed a drastic visit to the barbers. “Shaving the old hair seemed to help me, keeping it out of my eyes but, to be fair, I’ve always been a good header of a ball and, as a kid growing up, would score fifty or sixty goals a season and twenty to twenty five would be from headers. “The family comes over regularly and I usually score so I’m trying to get them to come permanently! It was great to see them over a week at Christmas. “It recharges the batteries mentally as well. You don’t forget all that they have done such as getting me boots, trainers, footballs and dropping me off at matches. I will always be thankful.” The ace goalscorer reached the career century against Plymouth last November. “When I scored against Guiseley in the following game they were putting that down as my hundredth but I thought I’d already reached the target.

“Hitting a hundred is just massive. Any Irish kids growing up in the game want to play in England and score professional goals. I don’t tend to follow milestones regularly but if I know I’m approaching a big one I’ll focus on it. Scoring goals is what a striker’s game is all about. It’s what you are measured by. Regular scorers are eagerly sought after.”

EVERYONE WANTED TO GET ONE OVER ON BLACKPOOL, PARTICULARLY AFTER LAST SEASON’S DISAPPOINTMENT, AND IT WAS GREAT FOR THE CHAIRMAN! HE WORKS WONDERS HERE AND WE ENJOYED GIVING HIM THE BRAGGING RIGHTS.

How many would you remember? “Give me a bit of time and I would remember them all!” What about the Plymouth goal, then? “Wes Burns put it back in the box and I hit the far corner.” There has been previous experience of

Fleetwood Town v Scunthorpe United

helping a side out of League One, at Yeovil in 2013. “Helping Yeovil into the Championship was very special. I just hit the ground running. I was an angry and frustrated man after being out of the game twice at Carlisle through bad injuries. I was away from my family but not playing and you begin to wonder whether it is all worth it. “After injury, I had no right to play as the team was doing well so took the chance to go out on loan. Yeovil were the bookies’ favourite to go down but had a team full of work horses with a never-say-die attitude. We sealed the job in the play offs.” Have you a goal target this season? “Yes, I’m looking for twenty and obviously I’m well on the way. I want to get to the target as quick as possible and then kick on.” The Cod Army will hope that the target has got closer come five o’clock today. “I still have a lot of mates at Scunthorpe and had a lot of support from the fans. It was a lovely standing ovation when I came off in the later stages of the away game. I really appreciated it. Stay humble and respect the fans and they will respect you.”

The Gaffer

The Danger Man

S

tuart McCall was appointed as Scunthorpe manager in August 2018 after the departure of former Fleetwood manager Graham Alexander. Prior to joining Scunthorpe, McCall coached Bradford City on two separate occasions, as well as Scottish giants Motherwell and Rangers. In his second stint at The Bantams, he reached the League One play-off final after knocking out the Cod Army in the semi-finals. McCall’s playing career ended in 2005 after over 20 years in the game. He started his career at Bradford, before moving on to Everton and Rangers, where he won five league titles and five domestic cups in seven years. McCall ended his career in 2005 with Sheffield United after over 750 matches, as well as representing Scotland 40 times.

Fleetwood Town v Scunthorpe United

triker Lee Novak joined Scunthorpe in 2017 after leaving Charlton Athletic on a free transfer. The 30-year-old started his career playing at Gretna, before moving to Newcastle Blue Star and then Gateshead. Novak moved into the Football League when Huddersfield signed him in 2009. His impact was immediate, getting an assist on his debut for the Terriers. He left the club in 2013 after making over 100 appearances for the club. Novak linked up with Lee Clark, when he moved to Birmingham City in 2013. He was unable to secure a consistent starting spot and because of this, he was released in 2016. He then moved to Charlton, where he scored three in 37 appearances before joining Scunthorpe. The forward currently has 16 goals in 63 games since joining The Iron in 2017.

ACADEMY WITH BEN LAVELLE

HEAD OF EDUCATION, SAFEGUARDING & WELFARE

Three members of the Fleetwood Town Academy worked with local charity Brian House in their annual Christmas tree clean-up. Earlier in the month, myself, Mike Hall (Foundation Phase Lead Coach) and Steven Jackson (Youth Academy Physiotherapist) worked with Brian House in their January initiative to help raise funds for their charity, which will ultimately go towards keeping this amazing place open. Fleetwood Town Football Club have strong links with Brian House – which saw the academy pay a visit to the site in October, as well as the first team staff and players going in December, and this initiative will go a long way in helping the children at the hospice. Brian House and Trinity Hospice requires £1 million to run each year and through the tree clean-up, we helped them raise £11,500. This saw the three of us go around Blackpool and the Fylde Coast collecting 1,400 Christmas trees on people’s door steps. Families who saw their Christmas trees collected already donated money to the charity, and we can’t say thank you enough to all those who got involved. Janet Atkins, who is the Senior Fundraiser for Trinity Hospice was over-

whelmed by the support from Fleetwood, and thanked all who have made a difference.

She wrote to me personally and said: “I want to say a huge thank you to all involved with the Christmas tree collection. Over 1,400 trees were registered on the day and the group didn’t help in their spare time, we wouldn’t have been able to make it a huge success. “It was great to see how much you all enjoyed yourself and we can’t wait to see you next January when we go again!” – This campaign will return on January 11-12th 2020.” The club would like to thank Brian House and Trinity Hospice for their help over the years, and everyone will be ready for the next initiative to raise funds for such a great cause.

COMMUNITYTRUST COMMUNITY TRUST COMMUNITY SPORTS DEVELOPMENT OFFICER JOHN HARTLEY ON HIS SPORTING MEMORIES SESSIONS...

Fleetwood Town Community Trust will host a ‘Sporting Memories’ session every Friday in the club’s Red and White bar at Highbury Stadium. These sessions will start taking place on Friday 8th February take place from 2:30pm until 4pm and are fun, friendly and exclusive to all over the age of 60-years-old. The programme is split into to parts with the first being a sporting memorabilia recap, with the second half including physical activity. For those who turn up, the first half of the ‘Sports Memories’ session consists of the group looking at a variety of sporting memorabilia, which will touch on Fleetwood Town, major sporting events across the U.K. and worldwide, which gets conversations flowing between the participants. The second half as stated consists of the attendees taking part in a physical activity, which would be a boccia session, yoga and stretches session to activities that are used in our ‘Fit for the Future’ programme. Club President and Sporting Memories Ambassador, Jim Lawrenson, spoke about the session after the recent meeting and said: “Sporting

Memories is a great opportunity to talk about lifelong experiences and share memories with others. We encourage you to socialise and meet new people, whilst at the same time have lots of fun with those around you. “This is a great way to keep your mind and body healthy and it is a programme that will continue to grow in the local area.” The Community Trust’s Sports Development Officer, John Hartley helps run the event and explained the benefits of those over the age of 60 who attend. He added: “The group is inclusive for all new members over the age of 60. The group particularly supports those with dementia and Alzheimer’s with a large part of the weekly sessions incorporating visuals of past sports performers or sporting memorabilia which encourages conversations. “Taking part in the physical activity is also so important towards the health and wellbeing, and if we can make a difference to somebodies life through Sporting Memories, that is a small reward for those who deliver.” For more information on Sporting Memories, please contact John Hartley on email at john.hartley@fleetwoodtownfc.com or via the phone on (01253) 208442. We look forward to seeing down at one of our sessions in the future.
