BARTON Fleetwood Town’s head coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against Gillingham...

G

0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm

ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One game with Gillingham. I’d like to extend that welcome to Steve Lovell, his staff and players, as well as the visiting directors and supporters who have made the long trip up from Kent today. The team come in to today’s game on the back of a really positive February. We picked up three wins from four, keeping three clean sheets in the process. I have been talking for a while now about how I love 1-0 scorelines, and to win three games in that manor against good sides such as Charlton, Bradford and Burton has been really pleasing. We also gave league leaders Luton a really good test last time out at home, only narrowly out. We are in the process of becoming a really good side, a strong togetherness amongst the players is emerging

and it’s important that we continue to build on this run at home, in what will be a tough game against a good Gillingham side. Since I last wrote my programme notes, we’ve been able to tie down Nathan Sheron to a new, long-term contract, which is great news for the football club. He’s a real team player, who is prepared to play anywhere for the team, and we’ve seen him progress this season into an important member of our squad. I was also really pleased for Ashley Nadesan to get his first goal for the club last weekend at Burton. He’s been first class since returning from Carlisle in January, and we are hopeful he can take a goal-scorers confidence into his performances are we run into the end of the season. I know he’s enjoying playing in our frontline and we’re seeing the rewards of that out on the pitch.

Fleetwood Town v Gillingham

Finally, I’d sure you’d like to join me in welcoming back Andy Mangan to Highbury. Mangs had a great time playing here and he has now begun his journey as a coach with us. He will complement our already strong backroom staff and in the short time he’s been with us, we’re already seeing the benefits of what he brings to our culture. Enjoy today’s game, and thanks for your continued support.

SOUTTAR STURDY AT THE BACK FOR TOWN WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Defender Harry Souttar recently joined Town on loan from Championship side Stoke City, as has been a constant figure in the back line ever since.

H

arry Souttar looked battle-hardened when we met, an injury over the left eye the result of a stray Luton elbow. The Cod Army look up to Harry, in every sense. Since arriving on loan from Stoke City at the end of January, the six foot six Scot has been at the heart of four defensive performances which have seen only one goal conceded from open play. A heroic block towards the end of the Burton Albion game seven days ago helped preserve Fleetwood’s three points. The twenty-year old is aiming high but his early influences are very much rooted at local level back in Scotland. “I have always been a Brechin City supporter and watched them regularly with Dad, who played for them, and John, my older brother. I lived in a little village called Luthermuir, five or ten minutes away. I remember playing in the park with John. We were competitive! There was a pub team in the village but Brechin City was the main team locally.” Harry’s early heroes were Brechin strikers Charlie King, Chris Templeman, Iain Russell and Rory McAllister. “I just thought they were brilliant to watch. Brechin had been in League One for eight or nine years then got promoted to the Championship through the play-offs two years ago. That was a brilliant achievement for the whole town. We are a small community and the players were part-time.” With his height, Harry could have been a force on the basketball court but it has always been football that has been paramount through school. “Originally, I was thinner and gangly. I was around thirteen or fourteen when I started growing. Luthermuir Primary and Mearns Academy were both largely footballplaying schools. Luthermuir had only seventy pupils but one year we were the fifth best in

4

Scotland. I loved school. We got in a lot of football at break and lunchtimes, then it was straight out to the park to play. It was just before PS4s and Xbox came out so I’m kind of glad I was at school when I was. “I started playing Under 8’s and 9’s at Brechin City on Saturdays and Sunday mornings. We went two years unbeaten and I know that a lot of the boys went into Youth Football. I signed for Celtic around this time but there was an agreement that I could still play for Brechin as home was so far away. The connection came from a Summer School camp in Forfar. One of the Celtic scouts invited me along.

I’VE LOVED IT HERE SINCE DAY ONE. I WAS DELIGHTED TO BE ON THE PITCH AND TO KEEP A CLEAN SHEET AGAINST A QUALITY SIDE IN CHARLTON ATHLETIC ON MY DEBUT.

“Martin Miller at Celtic was a brilliant coach and a good all-round guy. I can’t thank him enough for what he did for me and my family. Ian Cathro was another. He had Cathro Academy in Dundee and I went on a Wednesday night. “My brother also went, as did Ryan Gauld who is at Hibernian and Scott Fraser who played for Burton Albion against us last week. I was always a defender, apart from my very young days. I had started at right back then went into a central role.” In July 2013, Harry joined Dundee United’s Academy. “I worked towards my scholarship, which we call ‘apprentice’ in Scotland. In February 2015, I played alongside brother John, for

the first time since an Under 10s match against Hamilton! It was an Under 20’s game and I think that he was coming back from injury. He was in the first team at the time. We won 2-0 and I scored a header that day. It was a special occasion for us and the family.” In the same month came a Scottish callup, for the Under 17s against Romania. “That was another proud moment. I played reasonably well and we got the win.” Harry began to feature in a number of match day squads for Dundee United, eventually making his first team debut on 10th May 2016, against Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership. “I will always remember that game. I was alongside Sean Dillon who had been a big influence on me. He had lost his voice that day, which wasn’t ideal, but he was a big help, nevertheless, to all of us youngsters trying to make our way in the game. “I think five or six of us made our debuts around the time that I did. I was really pleased that we all got through together. I can’t speak highly enough of what Sean did to help us.” The season ended memorably with a goal at Kilmarnock, in a 4-2 win. Having come off the bench in the 83rd minute, Harry scored just three minutes later! “As a tall centre-half I had been kind of worried that I hadn’t scored in any game that season when perhaps people might have expected me to. Dave Bowman, my Under 20’s coach, was at the Kilmarnock game and gave me a congratulatory punch on the arm afterwards. It had been a poor season for the club as we were relegated to the Championship but at least I finished on a high. “Stoke City had been interested throughout the season and a couple of bids had been rejected. When the third one came

PLAYER BIO NAME: Harry Souttar AGE: 20 BIRTHDAY: 22/10/1998 POSITION: Defender PREVIOUS CLUBS: Dundee United (15-16) Stoke City (2016-Present) Ross County (2018 L) Fleetwood Town (19-Present L) Did You Know? Harry has represented Scotland at two different levels already in his career. He has played at the under-17 and under-19 levels, making two appearances and three appearances respectively. His under-17 debut was against Romania in February 2015.

along I had a word with Ray McKinnon, the Dundee United manager at the time. Ray was very supportive. He was aware of the big chance that English football offered with such a club as Stoke and didn’t want to stand in my way. I can’t thank him enough for that.” A three year deal was delayed as FIFA approval was sought due to the situation regarding cross-border switches for players under the age of eighteen. “That was frustrating because I had to wait until January 2017. However, the quality of the training facilities and the people within the club was worth the wait. One main reason I went there was the planning that was being put in place for my development and it is all coming to fruition now.” Harry’s debut came in the following August in the EFL Cup against Rochdale. “I came on in the last half hour and we won 4-0.” Three EFL Trophy games followed before Harry temporarily headed back north of the border. “Stoke wanted to give me a little bit of security with a new deal but also wanted me to get game time and I went on loan to

Ross County in the Scottish Premiership. I got thirteen games and it was brilliant to get my first run of matches in professional football. Owen Coyle and Stuart Kettlewell were big helps. To train all week knowing you would start on Saturday was a really good feeling. Every point mattered and that was motivating.

THE MAIN DIFFERENCE THAT I’M FINDING BETWEEN HERE AND SCOTLAND IS IN THE GAP BETWEEN THE TOP AND BOTTOM SIDES. HERE, EVERY GAME IS LIKE A CUP FINAL AND ANYONE CAN BEAT ANYONE.

“I knew that Fleetwood were interested in me. After the Ross County experience I was keen for more game time. I’ve loved it here since day one. The dressing room is probably the best I’ve been in. Clint Hill has taught me a lot about body shape and how to play in a back line. I was relieved more than anything to get my debut so quickly because I knew

Fleetwood Town v Gillingham

that both Craig Morgan and Ash Eastham are great players. “Morgs had a little injury so I went straight in. I was delighted to be on the pitch and to keep a clean sheet against a quality side in Charlton Athletic. “Ash has emphasized how important it is to keep a clean sheet and provide the foundation for the attacking players to go on and win the games. He is a leader who is so solid and good on the ball. He’s a leader off the park as well and has helped me a lot. “Bradford wasn’t the prettiest game to watch but they are the type of games we need to win to make progress. We knew Luton Town were the form side. Their free kick had that bit of quality that the top sides have. “I thought we did really well, though. The main difference that I’m finding between here and Scotland is in the gap between the top and bottom sides. In Scotland it is much bigger. Here everyone can beat everyone else and each game is like a cup final. “I’m really enjoying myself. I don’t think I could do anything else so I’m going to keep my head down, work hard and not take anything for granted.”

S

teve Lovell is the man in charge at The Gills and has been in the hot seat since October 2017. Lovell’s first stint as manager came after Peter Taylor left the club in December 2014 and he was sat along side club legend Andy Hessenthaler. He played at 19 clubs in his career, including Crystal Palace, Swansea, AFC Bournemouth and variety of non-league clubs. He eventually hung up his boots in 2001 at Sittingbourne FC, and after a spell as player/ manager, and helping guide the club to Southern Division Championship, he moved to Gravesend & Northfleet. After that brief spell as caretaker manager at Gillingham, he was appointed assistant manager at National League side Bromley.

Fleetwood Town v Gillingham

ith 17 goals to his name this season, Tom Eaves is the player Fleetwood Town should be wary of this Saturday. Striker Eaves scored in his last outing at Sunderland, even though his side came away with nothing at former Premier League side, Sunderland. Eaves was a product of the famed Crewe Alexandra academy, and he began his professional career with Oldham Athletic before signing for Bolton Wanderers in 2010. However, Eaves only made four appearances at the University of Bolton Stadium, as he spent time out on loan at Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury, Rotherham, Yeovil and Bury. He signed permanently for Gillingham in the summer of 2017, and has made 75 appearances for the Gills, scoring 31 goals in the league.

ACADEMY WITH SIMON WILES UNDER 18S COACH

First of all, I would like to congratulate James Hill after he signed his first professional contract at the club. It is a great achievement for James and it just goes to show that all the work that have been going on for the years he has been at the football club, is paying off. James is someone who has impressed the management team and the first team set up in his first session as a scholar, and that is fantastic. It goes to show – and I know we touch on this a lot – that the pathway the gaffer [Joey Barton] has brought into this football club is there. It is so easy for young lads to get carried away with the limelight and the exposure that comes with being a pro. We’ve spoken about molding the right person for the football club, and it’s important we do that with all the players who are coming through this academy. They [the players] need grounding because if they train with the first team, and then come back to us, they need to know that there’s still so much work to be done and so much learning to do. It’s great our players are getting the opportunities because it spurs not just them on, but also the group when they are walking out onto the pitch on a match day.

Fleetwood really is an exciting place to be at the moment, and when you look at the facilities we have on offer at Poolfoot Farm, it’s no wonder we are attracting players of the quality we are. Players who come here are coming here to work for their job and careers and that job is to become a footballer. They need to come here, to work hard to try and make it and even for me, I love driving into the car park at Poolfoot because I love football and love being here. This feeling can spread and can be infectious around the club, and with the culture we are trying to build here, it does really show what we are trying to do from the under 9s through to out under 18s. I am proud of what we are doing here and I know there’s still a lot to do, but so far it’s been a really exciting season.

COMMUNITYTRUST LEVEL PLAYING FIELD WEEKS OF ACTION

Fleetwood Town is pleased to support the 2019 Level Playing Field (LPF) Weeks of Action. This season marks the 15th anniversary of the EFL’s initiative, Level Playing Fields. The campaign looks to shine a light on all the positive work that is being done by all 72 clubs in the Football League, along with what the fans of those clubs are doing to work towards experiencing more positive and inclusive benefits for disabled fans and the wider community. Local teenager Jamie Oakey (pictured right with Chairman Andy Pilley) and his footballing colleagues are guests of honour at Highbury this afternoon, which is part of the club’s Level Playing Field campaign. Jamie has recently been named in the England Amputee FA’s Under-23 squad – and we wish him the all the best on international duty. Jamie was born without a right foot and a short right leg – and his teammates are using the Cod Army’s state-of-the-art £9m Poolfoot Farm training base for preparations, and have been given funding by chairman Andy Pilley to assist their quest for success. All national squads are supported by the England Amputee Football Association (EAFA), a registered charity, and the annual European training camp is co-ordinated by the European Amputee Football Federation (EAFF).

There was an interesting stat I saw during the week, and that was that 50% of disabled people have never participated in leisure or sports activity. This was found by the Centre of Access to Football in Europe and it’s important that we lower than percentage in the future. The EFL has, once again, offered its support to the ‘Weeks of Action’ initiative organised by Level Playing Field, the representative body of disabled football supporters. This season’s activity will take place across the country from Saturday 2nd March until Sunday 17th March, and we are delighted to be part of this to help spread awareness to many. This annual celebration of disabled football supporters is now in its 15th year and aims to shine a positive light on the work being done by Clubs, disabled supporters’ associations, fans and other organisations towards delivering access and inclusion. In doing so, it aims to promote a better matchday experience for disabled football supporters while encouraging more disabled people to go and watch matches. Last season, 44 EFL clubs delivered activities during the two weeks of the initiative which represented the highest number to date and demonstrated the commitment of EFL Clubs to delivering outstanding matchday experience for all fans.
