BARTON Fleetwood Town’s head coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against Southend...
0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm
G
ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match with Southend United. I’d like to extend that welcome to Kevin Bond, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the journey up from Southend to today’s game. Myself and Clint Hill know Bondy really well from our time at QPR, and we know that he will have his team well organised for today’s game. Other than today, we wish him and his staff all the best for the remainder of the current campaign. We have dedicated today’s fixture to support the work of Kick It Out in their 25th anniversary season and encourage our supporters to get behind everything they do. For 25 years, Kick It Out has played a vital role in ensuring that everyone, regardless
of background is welcome in our game. This season, we have seen a number of high-profile incidents that prove the sport needs to support their work now more than ever. Their message of equality is extremely important to us at Fleetwood Town and this is why we’re supporting Kick It Out today and encourage you all to report any discrimination you hear or witness at a game. We come into today’s game on the back of two straight victories against Plymouth and Accrington, and two performances I was really pleased with. Especially last Saturday at Accrington, against a team who are fighting for their lives and on a difficult surface, we answered every question defensively and were probably a little unlucky to not win by more goals.
Fleetwood Town v Southend United
I want to say a big thank you to our outstanding support that we had last Saturday at Accrington. For me, it was our best away support of the season, and the backing that the lads got definitely got the team over the line and three crucial points. The gauntlet has been thrown down for the rest of the season – both at home and away – and if we are to continue winning we need the supporters with us. Enjoy today’s game,

RYDEL PUSHING FOR
FIRST TEAM SPOT
WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL
Wing-back Ryan Rydel has recently burst into the first-team, and after four appearances in a row, he is looking for more time on the pitch.
W
hatever Ryan Rydel goes on to achieve in his football career, Saturday 16th March 2019 will prove to be a never-to-be-forgotten day. At a month or so over the age of eighteen, when many haven’t a clue what they want to do with their life, Ryan became the second youngest Fleetwood Town player to start an EFL game. “It still feels a bit surreal. After training on the Thursday before the game the gaffer told me I’d done well. I felt that I was ready to start. “He said he was thinking about putting me in against Plymouth Argyle but wasn’t absolutely sure. I had a feeling that I might get the nod. “On the Friday morning I was in the first team shape, doing all the set pieces, and was preparing myself for the announcement and the game. The gaffer’s telling me I’m going to start and I’m buzzing! “I contacted my family and made arrangements to get them tickets. All of them came up. Mum, Dad and my three brothers. It was a proud day for all of us. “I had told myself that I would go to bed early the night before to make sure I got a full night’s rest but got thinking about it all too much! “Having been on the bench a couple of times previously I have been involved in the pre-match build-up so the match day preparation was familiar. “We came into Poolfoot about half past eleven for some food and analysis. There’s half an hour or so to chill and talk to each other then we get to the stadium about half past one. “The experienced guys were telling me to be myself and not be nervous because complicating things doesn’t help. “I knew I was there for a reason and that settled me.
4
“Previously I have walked in to the dressing room and the shirt is opposite me where the bench players are. Now I was turning left to get to mine, which was in position order between Lewie Coyle and Harry Souttar. It still shocked me even though I knew I was starting. “Coyley told me that I deserved to be there so just go out and do the business. As for Soutts, his advice was to go back and give him the ball if I was in trouble. “In the warm-up there was more intense preparation than when you are on the bench. We are getting our heart rates up and doing more than just passing the ball round.
I’VE NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN A MATCH IN A STADIUM BEFORE! I WAS JUST STANDING AROUND HUGGING EVERYONE. IT WAS STRANGE BUT GOOD AT THE SAME TIME.
“It was the first time that I’d lined up in a tunnel before and I just joined it. Previously, I’ve wandered out on to the pitch and got ready to play. Walking out on to the pitch in the line was a good feeling. “I wasn’t too nervous. Mum told me afterwards that she had a tear in her eye. She has taken me to football every night since I was five years old. I was showing her that she hadn’t been wasting her time. I got more nervous as kick off approached. The time had come. I wanted to make sure that my first touch was simple, whether in attack or defence, and take it from there. “I blocked an early cross which gave me a lift. I now knew that I could defend against these first teamers. It was a bit frantic at
first. They were trying to put it on me but I thought I dealt with the situation fairly well. “I remember tackling their winger at one point and breaking out into open space going forward! That was fun! I didn’t want to do anything wrong in the first period, just give myself confidence and ease into the game. “At half time we were talking about getting the first goal. I was told that it had been a good first half for me and to make it even better in the second half. “After the break I took the view that this was just another game of football. It was something that I’ve been doing most of my life. Now was the time to show what I could do and I grew into it. “I was pleased with a first time pass that I played to Paddy Madden down the channel, knowing how much he likes to run on to the ball. Wes got a shot in at the end of it. “I was feeling fine physically but got a bit of cramp going up for a header. The gaffer didn’t want me to pull anything and finish my season so he brought me off. “He told me it had been a great home debut. There was another strange experience when I was given a coat to put on. Normally, I just go and sit down. It was all good, though. “When the game ended I didn’t know what to do! The eleven on the pitch were at the far side. I was standing near the tunnel and wasn’t sure whether to walk across and join them. “I’ve never been involved in a match in a stadium before! So I was just standing around hugging everyone. It was strange but good at the same time. All my youth team mates came over and gave me a hug, telling me how well I had done. In the future my advice would be to be yourself. You’re there for a reason, be positive.” Ryan hails from Oldham and previous experience has made him particularly keen to succeed.
PLAYER BIO NAME: Ryan Rydel AGE: 18 BIRTHDAY: 09/02/2001 POSITION: Full-back / Wing-back PREVIOUS CLUBS: Fleetwood Town (18-Present) Did You Know? Ryan made his full first-team debut for Fleetwood Town in the 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday 16th March and, in doing so, became the second youngest player to play for the club in a competitive fixture at 18 years, one month and seven days.
“I grew up a Manchester United supporter. Ronaldo was my favourite player and I filled in all the sticker books as a kid! I was scoring a lot of goals as a striker and tried several academies from a young age. “I went to Manchester United, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers. At Under 9 I had to choose one and went for Blackburn where I stayed until I was twelve. Then I moved on to Bolton. I broke my ankle and didn’t get back in their squad. “However, one thing they had done was to put me left back. I hadn’t played there before but settled in. At Under 16 I wasn’t offered anything so came to Fleetwood. “One of the Fleetwood youth team coaches had been my coach at Blackburn. Being let down elsewhere made me more determined to prove I could turn professional. “I came here half way through Under 16s and was with Simon Wiles. Youth team football was a step up for me and made me think I could become a professional. “The first time on the bench followed a development game where I played well. Shortly after, I got the call that the gaffer
wanted to take me to Southend United. I didn’t think I would get on but it was a good experience.”
I REMEMBER TACKLING THEIR WINGER AT ONE POINT AND BREAKING OUT INTO OPEN SPACE GOING FORWARD! THAT WAS FUN! I DIDN’T WANT ANYTHING TO GO WRONG.
Ryan signed professional terms in October 2018. “I was shocked because it was so early in the season. The Academy Manager, Ciaran Donnelly, and Simon had been telling me about it. “I got called to the office presumably to talk about a contract but didn’t expect to sign one there and then! “It was the day of the Rochdale game in the Checkatrade Trophy. After I signed, the
Fleetwood Town v Southend United
gaffer said that he wanted me to come on that night. We were 2-0 down. I got the last fifteen minutes and it flew by.” After five months wait came a flurry of activity starting with two trips to the Midlands in four days. “I wasn’t expecting to come on at Walsall as we were losing. The gaffer asked me to go and warm-up before shouting me to go on. “I whipped a good ball in which settled me straight away. The speed was the biggest difference to anything I had experienced before. “We were also losing at Coventry when I got the nod. I found the travelling a bit draining but it’s all part of being a footballer isn’t it?” Then came Plymouth Argyle and that first start. So much has happened in such a short time. What does Ryan do to relax? “I’m in digs at the moment. You have to be down for meals, you get time to do what you want and have to be in for ten. “I like to listen to music or go on the Xbox. Nothing different, I suppose, to anyone my age.”

evin Bond took the reins at Southend United on Tuesday morning after the sacking of former manager, Chris Powell. Bond played professional football for 20-years after starting at Bournemouth and Norwich in their respected academies, before signing his first contract at the Canaries in 1976. He featured for Manchester City 110 times, with over 100 appearances at Southampton and Bournemouth. The 61-year-old hung up his boots in 1996 and went on to coach the Reserve Team at Manchester City. Spells as coach at Wrexham and Altrincham followed before being named Assistant Manager of Portsmouth with Alan Ball. With over ten years spent with Harry Redknapp, Bond has vast experience at the top, and now steps into the hot seat at Roots Hall.

imon Cox is the ‘One to Watch’ for today’s clash, with the striker proving to be the club’s main source of goals this season. The 31-year-old was born in Tilehurt, Berkshire, and began his career in football at the Reading Academy, and was there for nine years before signing his first professional contract at the Royals. In three years at Reading, the forward was loaned out to Brentford, Northampton and Swindon, but having enjoyed his best spell at Swindon, he signed a permanent deal in 2008. Cox scored three hat-tricks for The Robins in his one season before moving to West Brom on an initial deal worth £1.5m. With spells at Nottingham Forest and a return to Reading, it is Southend where he’s enjoying his football on the coast.

ACADEMY WITH MATTHEW BLINKHORN HEAD OF ACADEMY COACHING
Last week I was given the opportunity to become the new Head of Coaching within the Academy, and it was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. I’d like to thank Ciaran Donnelly – the Academy Manager – for allowing me to step into this role as it was probably the right time for me. This is a forward thinking football club and I am really excited to hit the ground running and keep things progressing on and off the field. Previously I was the Youth Development Phase Coach, working specifically with players aged between 13 and 16. I feel that this is the next step on my coaching journey and to be here at Poolfoot Farm, it’s a place where you want to work. The Chairman has invested a lot in the last 15 years and he has seen the club gain many promotions. He has built this amazing place at Poolfoot and for me now it’s about embedding the culture and our values into that and see more players through our academy, hopefully players who are based here on the Fylde Coast, and that’s ultimately my job. On my first week in the job, I was asked to go to the Netherlands to see how the operations work at Ajax and at their Academy. I am very fortunate to have been given the chance to see how
they work and see what we can bring back to Fleetwood Town. Ajax is a massive football club that is steeped in history and tradition. They have been going for a long time and have been producing players who have gone on to have great careers. Fleetwood’s academy is only a few years old but for the academy and I, we can take certain aspects from them and implement those here. It’s important we look at other sports, and I know that seems silly, but those sports could make our players better with movement, agility, technicality and even psychologically, and these areas could be the difference in the future. The academy is always progressing and we’ve seen players come through and play for the first team, which is an unbelievable achievement. We need to keep producing better players and look at our Under 9s to our Under 23s and then those filtering into the first team. As I have said, Fleetwood is a forwarding thinking football club. We will learn but also have fun here and make dreams come a reality.

MAKE SPORT EVERYONE’S GAME. Transgender (trans) people have long been part of football. Across the leagues trans fans have been supporting their clubs for many years and on pitches up and down the country, trans people have been playing the game they love.
In 2015 the FA updated their policy on trans people in football to make it easier and fairer for trans people to participate in the game. The FA believes that ‘gender identity should not be a barrier to participation in football’. Nor do we.
18
Last summer Lucy Clark, a Non-League referee who is trans talked to the papers about her transition. She told the press “I have kept this secret hidden away most of my life. Now is the time to be ME”. We believe that football is at its best when people can bring their whole selves to the game, which is why we’ve launched the Football v Transphobia week of action from 24 - 31 March. We’re standing up for transgender people in the beautiful game. Will you?
It’s down to you to be an active ally. 7408 #FCBF00 0/27/100/0

COMMUNITYTRUST KICK IT OUT - 25 YEARS OF CAMPAIGNING FOR EQUALITY IN FOOTBALL
This week’s fixture against Southend United will see us host our dedicated fixture to the work of ‘Kick It Out’, football’s equality and inclusion organisation. For the last 25 years, the organisation has been at the heart of the drive towards equality, inclusion and cohesion for everyone who plays, watches or works in football. But the high-profile incidents that have marred football this season prove the sport needs an organisation like Kick It Out now more than ever. Throughout the current 2018/19 season, ‘Kick It Out’ is running an initiative, “Call Full Time on Hate”, which aims to utilise and engage the collective force of football to tackle discrimination and hate incidents at every level of the game. Having started as ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football’ in 1993, ‘Kick It Out’ has evolved into an organisation which works alongside its partners The FA, the Premier League, the English Football League, The Professional Footballers’ Association, the League Managers Association and the Football Supporters’ Federation, among many others. Since its inception, ‘Kick It Out’ has provided a clear, independent voice within the game to challenge discrimination and exclusion, as well as education for professional players, clubs, fans, grassroots organisations and beyond. The organisation also provides mentoring and guidance to help underrepresented groups participate in football and secure opportunities to develop a career in the game. There is also an apple and android application that users can use to report incidents of football-related discrimination to Kick It Out on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Supporters can contact ‘Kick It Out’ by calling 0800 1699414 or by emailing info@kickitout.org. We can make a difference. ‘Kick It Out’ has established an equality framework for professional clubs, supporting the development of equality practices and policies, and enabled more effective reporting and investigating of complaints of discriminatory abuse through its pioneering reporting app. However, despite 25 years of progress, hatred, prejudice, abuse and discrimination are still evident in our society and in football. In the 2018/19 season and beyond, we want everyone involved in football to continue to campaign for equality and challenge discrimination, while playing a part in shaping a fair and inclusive future for everyone who loves the game. But don’t forget to recognise how far we’ve come. Let’s kick racism and discrimination out of football – together.
