BARTON Fleetwood Town’s head coach gives his views ahead of today’s game against Bristol Rovers...
0844 5678 427 Mon-Fri, 8.30am-5.30pm
G
ood afternoon and welcome to today’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Bristol Rovers. I’d like to extend that welcome to Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan, his staff and players, as well as the supporters and directors who have made the long trip up to today’s game. We come into today’s game on the back of Monday’s derby match at Blackpool. Firstly, I’d like to praise the support that we had at Bloomfield Road. It was great to see almost 1,400 supporters make the journey down the coast and support the team in the way that they did – they were a credit to the club. We were very disappointed at not being able to send them home with a positive result of at least a draw, one we think that we deserved.
Despite the result, There were a number of positives from the game but none more so than the performance of James Hill. James became the youngest player to ever start a league game for Fleetwood Town, and I thought he handled the occasion of a derby brilliantly. He’s right at the start of his footballing journey, and we’re really looking forward to seeing him develop in the short-term – over the next few games – and also in the long-term – over the next few years. Now onto todays visitors, Bristol Rovers. Today’s game is of huge importance for them as they can secure their League One status for another season and they have our respect in that we know that we will need to be at our very best to return a good result.
Fleetwood Town v Bristol Rovers
In the reverse fixture we felt hard done by in terms of Ched Evans’ red card – which was later overturned – before then conceding an injury time goal which denied us a point. We’re keen to put things right today and finish our season strongly, both today and then on Tuesday night against Sunderland. Enjoy today’s game, and thank you for your continued support!

NICHOLSON STILL
LOVING FLEETWOOD
NAME: Barry Nicholson AGE: 40 BIRTHDAY: 24/08/1978
WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL
ROLE: First Team Coach
First team coach Barry Nicholson is enjoying his time coaching the first-team after previously spending time watching over the development squad.
PLAYING CAREER: Rangers (1995-2000) Dunfermline Athletic (00-05) Aberdeen (05-08) Preston North End (08-12) Fleetwood Town (12-13) Kilmarnock (13-14)
F
ollowing a successful career as a player, Barry Nicholson has become a muchrespected coach at Fleetwood Town. The proud Scot attributes much of what he has learned about life to time spent at Rangers in the mid-nineties. “The two apprenticeship years from sixteen shaped my adult life. It was all about winning and becoming a man. “It was really demanding. The days were long but it was the making of me. We started in the gym at eight o’clock, having arrived clean shaven and in shirt and tie. “Leaving home at half past six, I would have taken the train to Partick followed by the underground to Ibrox and then a short walk. I was an eight stone ten sixteen-year old and you very quickly had to put muscle on in the gym. “The apprentices tidied the stadium, cleaned the grout in the changing room with a toothbrush, blew up balls, put out kit. “We had to cope with a lot of aggravation and banter from the first team. It was all part of the test.” Barry grew up in Dumfries and early experiences were gained at Palmerston Park, home of Queen of the South. “Dad took me. We would sit in the stands then I was allowed to stand behind the goal. “I particularly remember Jimmy Robertson, a left-footed winger, and Stewart Cochrane who scored a lot of goals at centre forward. “Being my hometown team it was the easiest to follow till I got to my teens then I was able to travel to Glasgow to watch Rangers where I had signed schoolboy forms at thirteen.” Those were the days before academies became the accepted route to the first team. “Despite signing at Rangers I was still allowed to play for my boys club. That doesn’t happen today with the academies.

COACH BIO
I was playing with Dumfries Academy on a Saturday morning at ten o’clock then I would jump in the car after a quick shower to play for Rangers Boys Club in the afternoon. “There would be a third game back in Dumfries on the Sunday morning! There would also be training in Glasgow on a Monday evening. “Mum did the driving because Dad hadn’t passed his test then. Mum and Dad still live in Dumfries, as does my sister, and they have been a massive support through my career. “Grandad would even watch me play for Rangers reserves at Bathgate on a Tuesday afternoon. He would use the train.
THE ALLIANZ ARENA WOULD BE THE BEST I’VE PLAYED IN. WE GOT BEATEN 5-1 AFTER A DRAW AT HOME BUT IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE.
“Unbeknown to me, he compiled a list of every ground that I played at as a junior, an amateur and a pro. He gave me the list before he passed away and I’ve still got it at home. It’s absolutely brilliant.” Although Walter Smith was manager when Barry first signed it was Dick Advocaat who gave him his Rangers debut, in 1998/99. “I know how much work went into putting on the shirt for the team I supported. Over a two-year period there was a rule that there had to be two under 21s on the bench so I was involved a lot. “I never played an Old Firm game but nearly did! We were winning 4-0 at Ibrox. Barry Ferguson was injured and I was asked to get ready.
“I’m standing ready to come on when the referee blew the final whistle! Barry and I have grown up together. He was in the year ahead of me. “It got to the stage where I was not playing regularly. In 2000, there was a chance to play games for Dunfermline and Advocaat supported the move. Dunfermline had just got themselves into the Premier League. We gradually got better, ending fourth in 2004 and in the Scottish Cup Final against Celtic. “I was captain on that day. Our following was incredible but being Henrik Larsen’s last game for Celtic I think it was written in the stars that they would win.I scored some goals in the Cup run, including the semi-final winner, and it was a big part of my career.” There were four good years at Dunfermline under manager Jimmy Calderwood, so much so that Barry was keen to play under him again after Calderwood had moved to Aberdeen. It duly happened in 2005. “I learned a lot from Jimmy and also Jimmy Nichol, his assistant, who had great knowledge in the position I played.” Barry played over a hundred times for Aberdeen, up to 2008. A particular highlight was the UEFA Cup tie against Bayern Munich in February 2008. “The Allianz Arena would be the best I’ve played in. We got beaten 5-1 after a draw at home but it was unbelievable. I also loved playing at Parkhead and Ibrox but the best one in Scotland for atmosphere was Tynecastle. “It was a really compact and enclosed ground and there were some great tussles with Hearts when I played at Aberdeen. Two penalties played a part in my first and only hat-trick, against Inverness. “The Scottish Cup semi-final against Queen of South in 2008 was a key game in
Did You Know? Barry earned three full caps for Scotland during his playing career, and they were all won whilst playing for Dunfermline.
my career. Had we won we would have played Rangers in the final. “They had been in the UEFA Cup Final in Manchester and totally out of it. I honestly believe we could have won the final. “Had we done so, I think it would have made it more difficult to move down south. That semi had a big say in my decision to leave Scottish football. “It was an easy decision after I’d spoken to Preston manager, Alan Irvine, in Largs. We talked football for a couple of hours without mentioning Preston or how he wanted me to play. “I went away unsure as to whether he wanted me or not. Within an hour I got a phone call asking me to sign. The medical was the following morning and pre-season started the day after. “I loved my time at Preston. The supporters were great but didn’t see the best of me due to injury. I broke my leg at the start of the second season then injured it again in my comeback against Reading. “Mentally it was very tough. There were long days in the gym on my own. I got back
eventually but circumstances changed and I came to Fleetwood under Micky Mellon. “I wanted to play games and with signings like Jon Parkin and Damian Johnson it was obvious that the club was ambitious.” Barry was in Fleetwood’s first EFL game, at home to Torquay United in 2012. There were 30 appearances that season. “Morecambe away was a highlight. I scored and my roomie got a hat trick! Parky was a crazy guy but an unbelievable person to have in your group and as a team mate.” The midfielder’s last hurrah was a season at Kilmarnock where he will be forever remembered for a stunning volley against Hibernian in August 2013. “It was my 35th birthday and probably 35 yards! I was doing my coaching badges but wanted to play another year. I wasn’t looking to move back to Scotland. “I trained at a couple of clubs then bumped into Sandy Clark who worked with Jimmy Calderwood and Jimmy Nicholl at Dunfermline and Aberdeen. “He suggested I went to Kilmarnock who were looking for players. I signed a short-term
Fleetwood Town v Bristol Rovers
contract. We nearly got relegated and had to win the last game at Hibs to avoid it. “By then I knew it was back to Fleetwood to coach the Development Squad. Graham Alexander made it clear that I couldn’t continue to play as well. It was the right decision and taking it out of my hands made it easier. Graham got me involved from day one. I learned loads from him about detail, discipline and fitness. He was brilliant. “The Chairman and Steve Curwood have been supportive putting me through my badges. I’m on with the top one with the SFA at the moment. “I’ve done five or six years coaching and you think that’s experienced but when you speak to someone like Steve Eyre.... I’ve learned a lot from him.” “Playing for Scotland was the pinnacle. The day we played Latvia at Hampden we went out into Glasgow afterwards and I met my wife! “She played a big part in me going south, encouraging me to go for it. I’ve a lot to thank her for. She’s stuck by me in every decision and my children love coming to Fleetwood.”

The Gaffer
The Danger Man
G
raham Coughlan joined Bristol Rovers as a defensive coach last summer, but after the sacking of Darrell Clarke, and a successful spell as caretaker boss, was appointed the permanent manager of Rovers. This is Coughlan’s first job as the permanent manager of any club, but the 44-year-old from Dublin enjoyed an impressive career as a player. He played as a defender for Sheffield Wednesday, Livingston, Rotherham United and Shrewsbury, also appearing about 193 times for Plymouth Argyle, where he helped his side win the Football League Third Division and Second Division titles. Since he was appointed as the permanent boss, the Rovers have won seven games in all competitions and have now been steered well clear of the dreaded drop zone.

DANGER MAN: Clarke-Harris after scoring for Bristol
Fleetwood Town v Bristol Rovers
ince his arrival at the Memorial Stadium in January from Coventry, Jonson ClarkeHarris has been the Pirates’ main source of goals and is today’s ‘One to Watch’. Clarke-Harris is a product of the Coventry City youth academy but left for Peterborough United in 2012 - due to a lack of playing time. The 24-year-old left The Posh in 2013 to join Oldham Athletic, where he appeared 45 times and scored nine times. He then joined Rotherham United but whilst there, he spent a lot of time out on loan. Clarke-Harris then made the move back to Coventry - after a short loan spell - and was in good form that season. Since moving to Bristol in January, ClarkeHarris has impressed by scoring 11 goals in just 14 appearances.

ACADEMY THE ACADEMY ON TOUR TRIP TO LAKE GARDA, ITALY
The Academy’s Under 14s & 15s teams went on a football tour in Lake Garda over Easter for a weekend tournament in a beautiful area of Italy. The Gardaland Socca cup competition in Lake Garda was an overwhelming success for our boys. We sent 31 players to the tournament from the Under 14 and under 15 age groups and after flying to Malpensa Milan airport, we drove to our resort in Sirmione by the shores of the beautiful Lake Garda. On the day of the tournament, the opening ceremony took place and the organisers welcomed each team to the festival, with guest speakers on the day there to support the idea of how fair play was important to each team. The first day of the tournament saw the Under 14s beat German side FC Passau 3 -0, which was a fantastic result. The lads then beat Italian team ASD Sirmione 2-0, before finishing off with a draw. This saw us fight for 1st place against FC Kickers (Germany). The game against our German friends saw us take the lead, but with a late goal from Kickers, it meant the game finished level, and Kickers leading the group. With one game left against FC Castiglione, a win
would see us finish second – and well done to the lads, a 2-1 victory rounded off a fantastic trip. The under 15s managed to earn themselves a runners up medal in the tournament , and it kicked off with a 6-0 win over TSV Kosching from Germany. The lads then beat SG Archental (Dutch) 2-0 before ending the day undefeated winning 1-0 against FC Passau. On the second day the team faced FC Brixen (Germany), with the lads winning 2-0. This result saw us reach the final of the two group competition in front of a large crowd of around 400 people. The Under 15s played a great game but found themselves a goal down early on. This was cancelled out by a great individual Bobby Flitcroft, whose equalising goal to set up a penalty shoot-out. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be our day but two second place finishes is fantastic on our first trip abroad. It was thoroughly enjoyable, and both groups represented the club really well. We’ve made friends from our European neighbours, and hope to be back one day to go one step further!

It’s down to you to be an active ally.
Refugee footballers have made their mark on the beautiful game in the UK for decades. Children who fled the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s became some of the first refugees to play professional football in England. COMMUNITYTRUST OUR COMMUNITY TRUST’S WORK - ALONGSIDE WYRE SALVATION ARMY AND AMNESTY UK - WITH SYRIAN REFUGEES IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
Since the Syrian civil war officially began March 15, 2011, families have suffered under conflict with hundreds of thousands of people affected with torn the nation apart. Over the last 18 months the Salvation Army have helped families integrate into their local communities across the United Kingdom, and this matchday is our designated Amnesty Awareness day. A refugee is defined by the following: - has proven that they’d be at risk if returned to their home country. - has had their claim for asylum accepted by the government. - can now stay here either long term or indefinitely. Using the platform of sport, Fleetwood Town Community Trust, alongside Wyre Salvation Army and Amnesty UK are working in cohesion in breaking down barriers by delivering physical activity and offering them opportunities to engage in community projects across Wyre and Fylde. The initiative demonstrates how the local residents can support refugees whilst promoting the role of football and football fans in engaging with refugee communities in Fleetwood and the surrounding areas. As part of the offer we have linked in with local business partners by taking the families to different activities such as Clip & Climb in Blackpool, there they can try new sports that they wouldn’t get the opportunity to do in Fleetwood. The Trust aim to help the families by integrating them into the local communities through the power of sport. We have been delivering the programme now for seven months, which has seen an increase in confidence. It has been impressive to see the group taking part in
additional community sport provision where they are meeting new people on a weekly basis. Mousleh Aladrj, a participant at the weekly session has enjoyed taking part in activities such as football, boxing, dodgeball and feels his confidence has grown dramatically since day one, which rubs off on him, and also the group within. Alex Foden, the Refugee Resettlement Caseworker for the Wyre Salvation Army is someone who wants to promote the sessions, but also expand that in terms of the individuals health and well-being. Alex looks at how the programme can develop which then helps us with the types of session we put on. Breaking down barriers is a huge scalp to make and it’s important that we understand that refugees aren’t incompetent or unqualified, it’s about giving them an opportunity in our environment to bring them out of their shells, and open doors in the future. This programme continues to grow, and it’s great to see so many support the amazing cause.
TODAY’S MASCOTS
TEAM OF THE DAY
This weekend, as part of Amnesty International UK’s Football Welcomes campaign, clubs are organising events and activities for refugees and people seeking asylum, welcoming them into the local football community. The message is clear: the EFL is a football experience for everyone.
