BARTON REFLECTS ON FIRST YEAR IN CHARGE WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton sat down with David Mitchell to talk about his first 12 months in charge of the Cod Army.

T

en seasons ago, Fleetwood Town ended their home campaign in the Conference North with a 2-2 draw against Stafford Rangers. This evening they welcome former Premier League side and FA Cup winners, Sunderland. It will be another landmark occasion at Highbury. Last week I sat down with manager, Joey Barton, to recall his own past encounters with The Black Cats and to reflect on his first season in football management. “The reality of it is that Sunderland will be coming to our place to either seal automatic promotion or certainly give themselves a good chance. “A lot will depend on the Portsmouth game on Saturday because that might change their emphasis going in to our game. If they lose, they could well have one eye on the play-offs and rotate a little bit. “The key is giving a good account of ourselves whatever Sunderland side turns up. If we don’t we know that they are very dangerous.” Extra intrigue comes from Barton’s days as a Newcastle United player between 2007 and 2011. His six Tyne-Wear derbies featured five different Newcastle managers. The names tripped off the tongue. Allardyce, Keegan, Kinnear, Hughton, Pardew.... I asked if that statistic said more about him than them?! “Ha! I don’t know! There was certainly a weird period when I left Manchester City. “I saw Newcastle as consistently a top seven side looking to get into the top four. They had a plethora of really good players, the likes of Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Damian Duff and Nicky Butt. “I wanted to be a part of the progress but it didn’t happen. Mike Ashley took over the club in 2007 and within six or seven months he’d sacked Sam Allardyce and was

on to the next manager. Before we knew it, within two years Newcastle were relegated. Nevertheless, it is a great footballing city and it was a privilege to represent the football club.” What kind of reception will he expect from the Sunderland fans as he emerges from the tunnel this evening? “Probably not a very good one! As a former Newcastle player you wouldn’t expect anything else and it would be nice to burst their balloon. “They have a passionate fan base and they will want to see their team riding this positive season after a number in recent

memory which have been less memorable. “I always enjoyed the Tyne-Wear derbies. There was a lot of animosity between the two cities. I didn’t fully realise how much until I went to the north-east. You get a historical sense of it all. “Much of it goes back to the mines and the docks. There’s a lot of political significance and a strange energy around the derby games because of the proximity of the two cities. A lot of the fans interact on a daily basis but the derby comes round and the hostility comes to the surface.” He experienced defeat just once, 2-1 away in October 2008. “I remember coming on with just a few minutes left and having little chance to make

Fleetwood Town v Sunderland

an impact. The biggest win was 5-1 at St James’ Park in 2010. I got about four assists in that game. “I also remember being denied a goal at the Stadium of Light in August 2011. My header struck Seb Larsson’s arm on the line. It was my last game for Newcastle United. “I didn’t score many from headers so that would have been special, as would scoring at the Stadium of Light before moving on. It wasn’t meant to be but the main thing was that we won the game with Ryan Taylor, currently at Fleetwood, converting a free kick. “I had a great lasting memory of being a Newcastle player, beating Sunderland on their own patch. “The match last September was a great occasion for Fleetwood and we were a touch unfortunate not to get maximum points. Paddy had a penalty saved by the keeper. “However, credit to Sunderland who fought their way back into the game. Cairnsy had to make a couple of good stops towards the end. It was a good point for us and the lads took a lot of belief from it.’ ‘Since then Sunderland have gone from strength to strength, as they should with the personnel they have got. They haven’t been spectacular but solid consistency has got them where they now lie. “We haven’t been able to match that and have to learn those lessons on a week by week basis to give ourselves opportunities to stay in the top eight for large parts of the season.” Which other games stand out over his first season in management? “We were scintillating for parts of the Scunthorpe game. It was everything that is good in a performance. There have been other good days such as at Doncaster. “I was particularly pleased with the win at Wimbledon in January after they had

3

beaten us twice at home. I thought we were a touch unfortunate not to win by a greater margin than 3-0. We were that good. “It’s all well and good firing on all cylinders in the notable games but then you have to take care of bread and butter fixtures such as the Southends and the Rochdales at home. “We haven’t always been able to capitalize in such games. You get promoted by grinding out such results, particularly when you are not playing well, and we have to be more savvy and streetwise. “For me, we haven’t had enough 1-0 wins. We’ve almost been in touching distance of the play-offs on a number of occasions without being able to get in that pack and ride the momentum.” The first league win over Blackpool will remain a highlight for many Cods. “I thought that 3-2 flattered Blackpool. We were much the better side for large parts of that game as I thought we were at their place on Easter Monday. “There’s only been one occasion when I’ve been disappointed with a performance, the first half at Gillingham. Apart from that the lads have fought tooth and nail. “We were down to ten men at promotionchasing Barnsley but still gave it a go, the same at Blackpool. You can’t go down to ten men at any level and improving discipline is key for me because we sit at the bottom of that table. “I don’t think we are a dirty side but we have to take those decisions out of referees’ hands.’

Three out of the five youngest players in the club’s EFL history have been used by Barton, giving hope to all the aspiring players and coaches throughout the club. “That was the aim. We will find chances for them. Look at our bench in the last four or five weeks. It’s been full of young talent like Lawrence Smith, Barry Baggley, Ged Garner and Eddie Clarke. “Others like James Hill, Ryan Rydel and Nathan Sheron have all started games. They have to be good enough and dedicated enough to progress, although you also have to legislate for them making mistakes. It’s what young people do on the road to improvement.”

YOU GET PROMOTED BY GRINDING OUT SUCH RESULTS, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU ARE NOT PLAYING WELL, AND WE HAVE TO BE MORE SAVVY AND STREETWISE.

Does the gaffer miss playing? “I wish I was still able to play! I started out wanting to be a footballer. That was my passion. Along the way I thought about going into coaching at some point and staying in the game. It’s been a different challenge. This year for me has been a huge learning curve.” What has been the hardest part? “The job has really taught me patience, something I didn’t have as a player. I was

very demanding of everyone around me. At Premier League level you only have to tell a player once. “Battling my frustration is a real challenge. You give the lads everything they need to win games but when they get tired or under pressure they might switch off for a few seconds. “The game at Blackpool was a case in point. We turned off for twenty or thirty seconds in terms of organizing our back four against a long kick and because we didn’t get the structures right and communicate with each other we allow a ball to bounce and don’t react. “You need that communication when you are at your most vulnerable, when you’re tired, otherwise players can go into their shells. “They all know how to operate but as a manager you are powerless when something like that happens. “It’s often the simple things that undo plans because the lads can do more difficult things relatively well. They are learning but just not quick enough for me at times! “Youth, injuries and suspensions can hold

4

things back. We are up against big clubs chasing promotion using young players and full backs in centre midfield. Its been a bit mix and match at times but the fans seem to appreciate that.” And what is the most pleasurable aspect of it all? “Watching the team win and the lads bouncing into work is satisfying as is watching young men develop and gain confidence on the pitch, enjoying their football. “I was speaking to Wes Burns earlier today. He was a shadow of the man he is now. Seeing him with shoulders back, loving his football is definitely a great feeling. There are many others like him but I’ll admit it hasn’t gone to plan for everybody. Fans’ favourites leave the club and, ultimately, the responsibility is mine. “It’s human nature to want to hear good feedback about what you are doing but I’ve never really courted that. “For me, it has always been about the team. However, I did appreciate the reception from the fans after the recent Peterborough game. I am more aware of what we need to

Fleetwood Town v Sunderland

challenge for top six, top eight next season than when I walked into the club last summer. “I did a lot of research before I came but didn’t know League One as a player. Nothing prepares you until you experience it. “Going straight from talking about football on the radio to management has been a big step. It perhaps would have been nice to have cut teeth as an assistant for three or four years but I am hugely grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given. “If we learn the lessons that have cost us this year we are not a million miles away being where we want to be. “We must also consolidate the gains that we have made on and off the pitch. You have to constantly be looking up and keeping your eye on the prize. Look at Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury, both play-off contenders last season but who have spent most of this avoiding relegation. “The club’s come a long way in a short time. I want to help continue its upward trajectory to the next phase, to get into the play-off picture regularly and give ourselves a chance of Championship football.”

ack Ross was appointed as the Sunderland manager in the summer of 2018 after the club faced two consecutive relegations. Ross’ first club as manager was Alloa Athletic, where he led the club to a record 10game winning streak in all competitions in the 2016/17 campaign. He joined St. Mirren after leaving Alloa and lead them to the 2017/18 Scottish Championship title and was also named the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year. As a player, Ross spent a vast majority of his career in Scotland, appearing over 150 times for Clyde. Since his arrival at the Stadium of Light, Ross has guided Sunderland into the top six for the division, giving them a chance of promotion back into the Championship. 18+ only. Begambleaware.org.

DANGER MAN: McGeady celebrating at Wembley

Fleetwood Town v Sunderland

iden McGeady - who joined Sunderland from Everton in 2017 - has been an important player for the Black Cats. McGeady started his career by rising through the youth ranks at Celtic and then earned a promotion to the senior team, where he appeared over 250 times in all competitions. He then joined Spartak Moscow, where he scored 13 times in 93 appearances. The stint in the Russian capital earned him a move to the Premier League, where he played for two seasons at Everton. Whilst there, he went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End. Last season, the 31-year-old winger scored seven times in 37 Championship games and he has bettered that this season - scoring 14 times in 36 appearances in all competitions.

ACADEMY CIARAN DONNELLY ACADEMY MANAGER

The 2018/19 season has been a fantastic success for this ever growing and evolving academy. For us to have produced a number of academy developed players, and seen them play significant time in the first team is beyond what our expectations were for this stage of an academy, which has only been running for three years. What has happened this season will only aid the development of our academy moving forward. We put this down to the fantastic opportunities which have been presented to our players by the current first team staff, which without their courage to play young players, we would still be looking at when the time might be for academy developed players to make their mark. For me personally, I also have to look at what contributes to this and I am very thankful to have such a great team of people working in the academy. We have an excellent mix of experience and youth in our ranks, and the environment in the academy amongst the staff is where I have been aspiring for it to be since I arrived two years ago. I feel we are getting there but what we have to keep doing is striving forward. We are making excellent strides in creating a culture of development amongst the academy, and the players

are thriving in what it is most certainly a positive environment. This must continue next season and we must continue to grow so that our academy builds a positive reputation and so we can attract excellent players when we look at our Youth Foundation years to our Under 18s. When I look back at the Under 18s, they have performed really well this year. They did the club proud in the FA Youth Cup competition – unfortunately losing out to Bury at Gigg Lane, but for our lads it was a learning curb and one that helpful sees them grow as people and as players. Obviously it is great to see Ryan Rydel, James Hill, Barry Baggley and Dylan Boyle make their debuts this season. As stated earlier, it’s fantastic to have the support from the first team. Simon Wiles has done an excellent job with the group of Under 18s, and has worked really well together with the support of all the academy staff. We are excited about where this group can go next season with the new intake joining them in the summer.

COMMUNITYTRUST A REVIEW OVER THE ACHIEVEMENTS WITH COMMUNITY TRUST CEO MATT HILTON.

Over the past season we have continued to grow as a Community Trust, building on a solid foundation that first started back in May 2012. Year on year we continue to surpass our targets and in 2018 and for the first four months of this calendar year, it has been another fantastic year for the charity. Fleetwood Town Community Trust has expanded at a phenomenal rate and we now work in four key themed areas: Sports Participation, Education, Health & Wellbeing and Social Inclusion. Football, and in particular Fleetwood Town Football Club, has the ability to engage people, improve community cohesion and raise the hopes and aspirations of the people across Wyre and surrounding areas where we work. As a Trust, we are committed to ensuring that we respond to local needs whilst working strategically in line with regional and national agendas. The charity have raised in excess of £700,000 in 2018, which will help to deliver around 30 projects to over 13,000 local people. This is

something we are all extremely proud of and we are excited to get into these and as I said earlier, grow what we are doing. Our thriving partnerships play a huge part in allowing us to inspire the local community through our charitable work. I would like to thank all of our partner schools, businesses and groups who engage with us every year. It really does go a long way. The Trust have made a difference to local people – which as the CEO that is definitely one of the main objectives – and it improves participation rates in sport and exercise, delivery of projects around health and inclusion – which is also a programme that has grown massively throughout the year. One event this year that stands out to me was the EFL Day of Action. As a club we got involved in a variety of activities, with one being the Beach Clean at Fleetwood. With the Sky and Premier League initiative, it got the media coverage to help grow their project. On a whole, we are delighted where we are, and we are now looking forward to another year of growth. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our staff, trustees and volunteers who work tirelessly to deliver the many projects and events that really do make a positive difference in our community.
